Top 10 Eagles NFL Draft Busts - #3 Bryan Smith
The player at #3 on our top ten busts of the Andy Reid era is another example of the really bad job the Eagles have done taking linebackers in the first couple of rounds over the past decade.
Bryan Smith - 2008 - 3rd round 80th overall pick
Whether or not the Eagles meant to have the guys from McNeese State play defensive end or linebacker or both is hard to say since he never played a real game here... but coming out school he was the poster boy for the "undersized tweener" label. He lasted only one season with the Eagles and did not play in a single game.
The next year he was picked up by the Jaguars, played in a couple of games and recorded three tackles. He spent last season on injured reserve.

Just so you know, on twitter this says “Top 10 Eagles NFL Draft Busts – #3 Tony Hunt”. Kind of got confused since I think we had Tony as #4.
But yeah, Bryan Smith was awful. I remember him being decent on Madden, though, I think. So, at least there was at.

When I think "tweener" DE
I’m thinking someone who goes 240 lbs. This guy was undersized for a LB. There were reports of him playing at like 217-225 at DE! He reminded me a lot of Cory Moore from VT
That's why I hated this pick when they made it, he was way too light

I wasn't angry when they made this pick.
I was just confused. Maybe Andy has a problem picking LBs because he so rarely picks actual LINEBACKERS. He might have more success if he stopped picking DEs, or if he just can’t break the habit of picking small school pass-rushers, at least he should let them rush the passer.
I still wonder how much of this stuff was Andy and how much was JJ. Was it him who was so in love with these type of guys but never seemed to find a way to use them. Smith is one of those guys that maybe in Washburn’s system might (still really questionable) have done something but with what the Eagles wanted him to do he had no chance.
Thing is, I dont even really know what the Eagles wanted him to do…

I’m still confused on that myself. Who knows?

Remember all the stories about him not being to afford food and that was why he was lighter?

still dont know if you can call a 3rd rounder a "bust"
but yeah he sucked!!!!!

You can in this case
Never sniffing the field! First three rounds you want players that start or at least can play in packages. This guy was neither.
Not all his fault in my opinion. I think the Eagles are at fault for even bothering with him. If I remember right when he was drafting I thought I heard the guys on TV say something like, this is a 6th round guy or something along those lines. I blame only th Eagles for even making this pick. I wonder who was on the board that we could have picked.
heres a name that would have helped

Next 10 or so included:
Early Doucet, WR
DeJuan Morgan, S
Harry Douglas, WR
Tom Zbikowski, S
Andre Fluellen, DT
Bruce Davis, OLB
Steve Slaton, RB
Marcus Harrison, DT
Jermichael Finely, TE (that one hurt)
Clint Avril, DE
Mario Manningham, WR
3rd round is high enough that I think you expect to get a contribution out of a guy.
