A look back at the college prospects the Eagles held private workouts with last year

This past Saturday, Pro Football Talk reported that the Eagles and Browns each had scheduled a private workout with the combine's fastest man, cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke.  With that in mind, I thought it might be fun to look back at who the Eagles had private workouts with last offseason leading up to the draft:

PlayerPosSchoolPlayerPosSchool
Javier Arenas CB Alabama Robert McClain CB Connecticut
Eric Berry FS Tennessee Zoltan Mesko P Michigan
Dezmon Briscoe WR Kansas Earl Mitchell DT Arizona
Selvish Capers OT WVU Arthur Moats DE James Madison
Jamar Chaney ILB Mississippi St. Tony Moeaki TE Iowa
Anthony Davis OT Rutgers Edward Morton-Green WR Morgan st.
Dexter Davis DE Arizona St. Eric Moncur DE Miami
Jonathan Dwyer RB GT Mike Newton S Buffalo
Marcus Easley WR Connecticut Brian Price DT UCLA
A.J. Edds LB Iowa Vincent Rey LB Duke
Jeffrey Fitzgerald DL KSU Zac Robinson QB OK St.
Toby Gerhart RB Stanford Charles Scott RB LSU
Brandyn Harvey WR Villanova John Skelton QB Fordham
Joe Hawley OL UNLV Daniel Te'o-Nesheim DE Washington
Jerry Hughes DE TCU Jason Worilds DE Virginia Tech
Mike Iupati G Idaho Roger Saffold OT Indiana
Deji Karim RB S. Illinois Chris McCoy DE/LB Middle Tennessee St.
Sergio Kindle OLB Texas Ricky Sapp DE/LB Clemson
Steve Maneri TE Temple

Of the 37 players they brought to the Novacare Complex, they drafted 4 - Jamar Chaney, Ricky Sapp, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, and Charles Scott.

[Note by JasonB, 03/07/11 1:13 PM EST ] They also signed DE Eric Moncur as an undrafted free agent. He didn't make the team, but had two short stints with them in camp last year. Thanks to @PFF_John for that one.

It’ll be interesting to see if we have the same results next time. Or after we work out some more maybe come back and ask which 10% do we think the Eagles will take.

Yea it's very interesting how few they took out of the poeple they had workout for them

I wonder what this would be like for most NFL teams, whether the Eagles are the few who don’t draft many they had workout or if that is a common strategy for teams to use.

I think 4 out of 37 is actually a pretty high number. Keep in mind there are 31 other teams drafting players as well.

Yes it’s very hard to really determine if it was alot or a little because you really need to know the situation for each. If for alot of these guys they could have drafted but they chose not to, than it is likely they use these workouts almost as decoys. However, its possible they simply would have drafted some of these guys if they could but they were unable to. In that case, the list of who they have workout could indeed tell who they’ll go after. If I did alot of research I could find out how many of them they could have drafted if they wanted. I think that’s a more tell-tale sign of the relevance of these sort of lists than just who they did draft.

I meant to put just “could have” in bold to emphasize it. My bad

by flyeaglesfly1020 on Mar 7, 2011 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

I was thinking it to be high myself

4/37 when you factor in that there are 32 teams, and its a draft (first come first serve)… getting 10% seems like a high number.

by Sparki on Mar 7, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

forgot to mention

That you’d also need to factor in: The amount of that 37 who were scratched as prospects due to a bad work out…

by Sparki on Mar 7, 2011 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Didn’t Eric Moncur play for the Eagles once upon a time?

Good call. Missed that. He was an undrafted free agent, and a camp cut.

Interesting.

I wonder if anyone but Chaney will be a contributor in the future. Or if he will be a contributor in the future.

Wonder how many of those turned into something decent in the NFL?

Essentially, how many were Jamar Chaney’s and how many were Charles Scott’s, of the ones they worked out

Oof.

I'm kind of upset that we worked out

Scott and still drafted him lol

Let's get it Birds.

Man, everytime I think of that pick it hurts. Here is a list of players that were still on the boards at that time:

-Navarro Bowman
-Tony Moeacki
-Everson Griffen
-Bruce Cambell
-Aaron Hernandez
-AJ Edds

Hell, even with Rocca’s pretty good year, I would’ve taken Mesko in the 3rd.

At least Mesko might’ve seen the field more than 4 times in an entire season.

I don’t think I’d be pining for Griffen, Bowman, or Edds anytime soon.

Though Hernandez would’ve been nice.

Griffen led all rookies in sacks IIRC, Edds got IR’ed, and okay, I can agree on Bowman.

WOW, I was WRONG, I was confusing Griffen for Carlos Dunlap. My mistake.

I do grab him in Madden

and stash him for 2 years. by year 3, he’s like an 80 and not too bad for a rotational.

by corn on the kolb on Mar 7, 2011 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah Griffen did next to nothing this year and to boot got arrested twice in three days after the season was over.

DTO is going to do some damage this year under Washburn. Dude started all 49 games of his career and recorded 194 tackles, 30 sacks, 50.5 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Named 2nd team All Pac-10 as well. He’s got talent. He did pick up a sack week 17 against to ’Boys to end the regular season!

ha! that sack was BS… like going out to check the mail.

Another Reason

When they do these workouosts they get to have the coaches spend more one on one time with a player and get a better “feel” for their football smarts and personality. Both of those attributes are perhaps undervalued in the combines desire for quantifiable measurables.

I wish we had drafted the kid from GT

Dwyer is exactly the change of pace back that we need. I think he was drafted late too.

by Saidrick on Mar 7, 2011 1:36 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He only played in one more NFL game than I did.

it’d be interesting to know how many of these players were taken by another team that brought them in for private workouts… in other words, does having private workouts for a team make it more likely that they’ll draft you, and by how much?
