2011 BGN Community Mock Draft Pick #14: The St. Louis Rams
With the fourteenth pick in the 2011 BGN Mock Draft, MidwesternEaglesFan selects...
Jimmy Smith - CB, Colorado
The St. Louis Rams are finally headed in the right direction and came a game away from making the playoffs (thanks in part to a awful division) despite coming into the 2010 season as one of the worst teams in the league. Sam Bradford exceeded expectations as a rookie throwing for 3,512 yards and 18 touchdowns and just 15 interceptions despite his two best recievers being Eagles rejects- Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson.
The ideal pick here would be a Julio Jones, but he went to the Minnesota Vikings at #12. The Rams clearly lacked a true deep threat as they were unable to get that big play that could have gotten them into the playoffs last year. The next best options at wideout here are Jon Baldwin, Titus Young and Torrey Smith. Any of those guys would be a major stretch at #14 and probably none of them are worthy of being taken in the first round. Expect the Rams to go wideout in the second round. It just doesn't make sense to get their deep threat right here.
Nate Solder and Akeem Ayers are probably the two best players still on the board. The Rams are set at offensive tackle right now with Jason Smith at right tackle and Rodger Saffold at left tackle. The Rams do need to upgrade their offensive linebackers of David Vobora and Larry Grant (who) but Akeem Ayers reminds me too much of Ernie Sims: a very athletic linebacker with good pass rushing skills but absolutley no discipline on the field.
More after the jump...
Finally to the actual pick, Jimmy Smith. The Rams current starting corners are Ron Bartell and Bradley Fletcher. They combined for 4 int's and 0 sacks. The Rams finished 18th in pass defense, giving up 232+ passing yards a game despite playing 6 games againist horrible offenses in the NFC West. I believe Jimmy Smith will develop into the next shutdown corner. In his final two years at Colorado, he only gave up one first down in man coverage. Smith has excellent size at 6'0 200+ lbs, and ran a 4.4 40 at his pro day in Boulder. I see Smith as a Darrelle Revis clone. They both ran 4.4 40 at their pro days, both are about the same size (Revis is 5'11 198) and both are extremley cocky but confident. They both want to man up against the other team's best wideout.
The Rams may have missed in their ideal pick in Julio Jones, but I think they get a guy who has even more potential at his position, plus they can still get that deep threat in the second round.
Next on the clock will be TheRealMcCoy with the Miami Dolphins.
Previous Picks: 1 - Nick Fairley 2 - Patrick Peterson 3 - Blaine Gabbert 4 - Cam Newton 5 - Von Miller 6 - Marcell Dareus 7 - Prince Amukamara 8 - A.J. Green 9 - Da'Quan Bowers 10 - Corey Liuget 11 - Robert Quinn 12 - Julio Jones 13 - Tyron Smith

It's a good pick
But they’re going to need a safety in rd 2 seeing as how they just threw out the oj in the fridge. Before they draft any of the wr’s left-overs.

Thats a big maybe
If there’s no fa before the draft , they’re going to address their needs through the draft. Why bother waiting on a player who may or may not be available later on.

Same could be said with the Eagles and Nnamdi

I’m kind of unsure whether I like it or not. Do I like the player? Definitely. Is is value? I’m not sure. Is it an area of need? Yeah, probably not the most pressing, but it’s an area.
I’d say WR, DE, CB, LB and TE, in that order is probably what they’re looking at. You can definitely make the argument that the way this mock is going you really have no choice. In real life they may try to trade back if Quinn, Jones, Green, etc. are all gone.
Needs
Their 2 starting DE’s combined for 19 sacks last year so I think they are set at that position. CB, LB defintley, TE as well but not in the first round.

The need is there, the talent is there, but the attitude isn’t. Many teams have been refusing to draft this guy at all based on his history of drug arrests and his poor combine interview. I’m not sure if the Rams are among those teams, but word is that Smith could fall as far as the second round despite being a top-15 talent. They should try for him there.

Dan Marino
lasted til late in the first round based on reports that he had off the field problems. Smith doesn’t have to interview well to man up on the leagues best wideouts. Doesn’t stop Cromartie.

Depends on the site
I have seen multiple sites that have him at 6’0 and at 6’2. I’m guessing the 6’2 measurement comes from CU.

Offensive linebackers?
The Rams do need to upgrade their offensive linebackers
Wow
I’m pretty embarrassed because I actually profread this. True story though, my old man’s g/f thought that was what OLB stood for so I guess that was still in my head. But in case you guys could figure out what I meant OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS.

NFP says he's falling off teams' draft boards
Maybe he’ll fall to the 20’s for you guys if that’s one you’re hoping for. I actually think that’s about where he ought to be, late teens to early 20’s.
Jimmy Smith measured 6’2" at the NFL combine.
Merry Vickmas everyone! * Falls into pile of snow DeSean style *

Brandon Gibson was an Eagles reject?
Pretty sure he was highly regarded around here, and was only traded to help plug a weakness.
But this is a good pick, I do think them reaching for Baldwin in this scenario is very possible though.
Not really a reject
Tried to make a joke with that one. I liked GIbson a lot. He was a reject of ours in the sense that we traded him away. I really don’t like Baldwin at all. But I think if I would of selected Baldwin I would of gotten better perentage of approval. Acutally I think if I would of drafted a made up player I would have done better.

Got ya
I’m not too familiar with everyone’s posting style or sense of humor yet since i dont post too regularly lol
Baldwin will probably be a bust, I just think in reality he’ll go mid/late 1st because Green/Jones will both be off early and he’s got an attractive blend of size and speed that coaches and GMs get hard for.
yeah fuck you dick,
get used to everybody’s humor…
geeze… (BTW This is my humor 90% of the time.)
Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...
Wild_Eagle!
Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

I kinda figured you'd go like LB with this pick really,
Laurenitis is the only good one they got.

This is a weak interior linebacker class.

Wanted too
But who? Akeem Ayers is the next Ernie SIms as I said in the article.

Well now that 90% of the teams removed smith from their boards for character issues
I doubt he goes in the first at all now
I suck
I guess I’m the Carolina Panthers of this mock draft. I don’t think I would have gotten 40% approval no matter who I would of taken. Appreciate how everyone that said it was a bad pick had the gall to at least suggest who I should of taken.
