Eagles Hire Johnnie Lynn As Secondary/Corners Coach
A half hour ago it was a rumor and now it's a reality. The Eagles have officially announced that they've hired Johnnie Lynn as their secondary/cornerbacks coach. For more on Lynn, check out the post just below, but the short story is that he brings a ton of experience both as a player and coach to the Eagles defensive staff.
The team also moved a number of other pieces around on the staff promoting Duce Staley to special teams quality control coach, promoting James Urban to assistant offensive coordinator, David Culley to senior offensive assistant/WR coach, Doug Pederson was hired as QB coach and Bobby April Jr. was hired as a defensive quality control coach.

Seems like...
They’re really high on Urban, I guess that whole Vick/Kolb thing paid dividends for him.
BTW, this now makes GCobb correct twice in the past…5 hours. Still, good call I suppose.

This is good....
…no gripes here. One question does arise though…why does our CB coach have more experience at DC than any other member of the coaching staff?
....and thats a Jack Fact
So then who is the Offensive Quality Control Coach?

Is Bobby April Jr
the son of our ST coach or did the Eagles change his position as well?

I did try to google it but got a lot of Bobby and J.R. Ewing references and gave up.

Really the quality control coaches blow whistles and hold clipboards at practices. Plus they help prepare film and stuff. It’s a learning kind of position although it is a stepping stone.

I read an article recently
how Dan Snyder used to let all his head coaches, minus Horny for Zorny, have their sons on as QC Coaches, or Def Assists, etc… we can all see how well that turned out.
I just don’t want to see even begin to go that route.
It’s good to know they don’t have that big of an effect on our day to day operations.
I’m okay with it as long as he’s not an utter joke.

The negativity on here amazes me sometimes
There are SO sons of coaches that have gone on to be great, or at least competent coaches!
The obvious first example is Rex Ryan, Then there’s Lane Kiffen, who isn ‘t without controversy, but he’s certainly not without value as a coach. Lets not forget Brian Shottenheimer, who’s not a HC but has been a successful OC for quite a while now. While we’re talking about OC’s we might as well mention Kyle Shanahan, who, despite his recent struggles, does appear to mostly be a competent OC as well.
Lets not jump to conclusions or go being negative for the sake of being negative.
Gotcha
Your examples are of good hires… mine were of bad.
both sides have been presented!

Just curious...
but how does a guy who was largely ineffective at playing QB then get to coach QB’s?

hrmmm
You don’t have to be good at playing QB to be good at coaching it. Case in point? Andy Fucking Reid.
Andy wasn’t even a QB; he was a not-very-good offensive lineman in college.

More often than not, the opposite it true. How many NFL head coaches are former players that were any good?

Yeah, the best coaches are usually the worst players.
Probably because they had to study, learn, and work hard to get ahead, instead of just relying on their talents.

He’s a “student of the game” and a “high motor guy.” (I just threw up in my mouth a little bit)

Precisely because
The ultra-talented stars never turn into great coaches. Gretzky/Jordan are prime examples. The best coaches always seem to be the backups, the people who got spot starts, etc. They have to learn so much just to reach even close to the “level” of talent that big name stars has.
Remember, Pederson was not necessarily here to “start,” but to mentor and teach Donovan. He was known as a great backup, a great student of the game, and someone who had basically mastered the ins and outs of the WCO. Did it produce on field? No, but his talent was…well…lacking. But, if you look at McNabb’s progression, you can’t help but applaud Andy for bringing Doug in to be his mentor.

No
but there I doubt there’s enough secondary coaches in the world to make Joselio Hanson effective at all on the outside. Plus young guys like Lindley and whoever we draft (even if we get Nnamdi we still need depth) could use a wise old coach to impart some knowledge. Maybe Lynn can coach Asante and Nnamdi on how to not look bored while standing around knowing that nobody will throw the football near them.

I want to see Lindley competing for a job in 2 seasons lol

I'm happy with all of those moves.
Would’ve liked somebody with experience for a LB coach but all in all I’m happy

Just a side thought
I read the article about Lynn and was amused by the quote of Singletary. To me it sounded like “Either you walk or you’re fired. Its your problem, deal with it!.” He then realized that this probably would ruin their friendship.

Which I don't think is a bad move, he's got some experience I mean he was the interm LB coach a few years ago for a few weeks,
but to be honest I was hoping for somebody with more experience and a proven track record to come in..
I mean guys like Fokou, Cheney, and Clayton all have a great amount of talent and ability, but guys like Bradley and Jordan are nearing the end of their time to reach their potential…
