Why not Clinton Portis as an Eagle?

Yes I know the Eagles have Lesean McCoy. I love him just as all other Eagle fans do. He fought and played through injuries this year and for that he deserves a lot of credit, but I am not sold on the number two back the eagles have, and I don't think they are either.

Season Car Yds Avg TD
2010 71 330 4.6 1

Not bad and for a situational back, but isn't funny how the Browns trade him because of lack of production and all of asudden Peyton Hillis explodes onto the scene? We need a power runner and Clinton Portis is exactly that, a north type of runner. He was slowed by injuries but he and I both agree there is some power left in the tank.

Leonard Weaver tore his ACL in the first game of the season and if anybody knows about knee injuries they are a trouble for RB. In fact the only running back I remember seeing come back 7 monthes after his injury and tearing it up was the Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers. I hope he does I love Weaver and his has a nose for the end zone but what if he isnt 100%?

Clinton Portis could get it done and has said before he would of loved to play for Philly.

After being caught wearing a Phillies hat. Here i what he had to say,

"I just felt like wearing red,"

So like Bob Sanders, if the Eagles can get him for cheap and he is ok with a back up role I'd say go after him hes only going to help us.

I’ll admit that I thought about it for a second for a couple reasons:
1. He would be a pretty decent back-up with tons of experience
2. He is a fantastic blocker
3. He can catch the ball

But there is no denying that he has injury issues, he is breaking down and he is older. If the Eagles are willing to let Quintin Mikell walk because of his age I highly doubt they sign a soon-to-be 30 year old RB.

you guys are being irrational

You guys seem so content with the offense. Im not they lack the big plays in key moments yes it has gotten better 09 was horrible. And McNabb is not to blame for the Eagles failure at all. If he goes to Vikings or Cardinals dont be suprised if they are a playoff team. I also believe the eagles need a BIG wide out someone whos tall and can catch the ball. Plax or anyone for that matter would be awesome. Sidney Rice may want out of Minnesota, why not? if our offense can become truly powerful and hard to stop you can never have to many weapons. I would love to see T.O. back.

One of two things is possible here.

Either:

1. You’re trolling.

OR

2. You’re an idiot.

If you’re actually being serious, go back and watch how badly McNabb’s footwork and pocket presence has collapsed. The 09 offense wasn’t horrible. You don’t set a franchise record in points scored by being a “horrible” offense. TO back? Signing Plaxico?

I sincerely hope you’re being an ineffective troll rather than a moronic sports fan.

I love the idea, he’s an upgrade over Harrison, i’m sure he can teach shady a few things and who knows maybe he’ll show flashes of the old.
I want to know who else is on everybody else’s mind? A rookie? Harrison? WHO?
Portis is still one of the best blitz pick up rb’s in the league, put him and Shady in the back field together instead of Owen.

No he certainly the fuck isn’t. Portis’ knees are beyond fucked up and Harrison is a beast when given the ball.

C'MON DickMuffin..

You say “No he’s not” like Harrison is a bad ass and Portis is trash. Portis was banged up last year and RT outplayed him, RT outplayed a lot of RB’s in the league. With that said Portis can still pass protect and grind you out a tough yard here and there, we can leave the heavy lifting to Shady. Harrison is only 2 years younger than Portis and dosnt have the skill or potential to sniff Hawaii. Fuck it, bring him in cheap and let him beat out Harrison.

More like Portis was banged up last year, and the year before, and two years before that. The dudes always banged up. Harrison on the other hand has so much less mileage than Portis.
Portis is done, son.

harrison showed flashes of greatness

He had a strong finish 2 seasons ago rushing for like 500 yards over 2-3 games and we seen him break off a nice run against the Redskins. The man barley see’s the ball and still gets good gains almost every time he touches it. i like our 1-2 punch. if weave makes a good recovery we can use him to hammer it in or catch it out of the flat

OK, I'm not agreeing with DSmith that you're an idiot

But I am agreeing with him that you are really barking up the wrong tree if you want a Super Bowl here. Is Portis maybe worth a shot for the minimum salary? Maybe, if only for the depth. But even then, I’m not sure if he’s worth the roster spot.

But to say that you “want the offense to take us over the top to win a SB” by signing a backup RB with injury problems is probably not the best way to approach this. We need offensive line and defense. Those are our biggest holes. Could our offense improve besides offensive line? Sure, but we don’t have a glaring void like we do elsewhere on the team.

…we would want him or not, he wouldn’t come here. He’s done, but at 29, he doesn’t know that. He is going to want a chance at a competition somewhere because he is close to 10K yards. Plus, he has always been a back that needs volume to produce. He couldn’t get the carries he would need to be productive here even if he was the starter, much less the backup.

Portis has 2,230 career carries. There isn’t any way he is lasting another year, backup or not. So, no.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

That is amazing, isn't it...

…when you consider he is only 29…he has a ton of carries and yards before 30. Be interesting to see A) where he ranks in the stats of backs before 30 and B) what he would have had if he had not gotten injured so much.

I think Harrison is a good backup RB

But unfortunately I don’t think the eagles will re-sign him. He wants a chance to start which isn’t going to happen in Philly, and I don’t want Portis, so hopefully we’ll draft a back that can come in and be prepared to play.

The last time Clinton Portis, as a starting running back in the NFL, posted a higher YPC than Jerome Harrison, a role player who wasn’t even with the team for the entire season, it was 2003, and he was with Denver, with whom I could average 5 YPC. The last time he finished a season was 2008. His best days are definitely behind him.

I don’t think Harrison is the answer, but right now he gets the yards we need when we need them, and if you didn’t notice him when we got rid of Mike Bell you weren’t watching. Portis definitely isn’t the answer.

Harrison is adequate, but no star – and no Buckhalter either. There are more important needs to fill right now, but if the FO does the same kind of trades and acquisitions right before the draft that they did last year, the team’s needs will shift from the obvious OG, CB and LB that everyone is keying on right now. Sure, I’d like to see RB, FB and TE positions with more depth or strenghtened. Mabye we’ll pick up a good free agent cornerback with a ridiculous name.

Nmandi? Jumanji? Whatever..

There is more depth on the line when Jamaal & Co are healthy and some shifting can be done to improve the right side – maybe. With Stew back and some shifting done, LB won’t look as bad as it did at the end of the season. Even if we win the Nmandi/Jumanji sweepstakes, the CB position is thin and aging and the safeties are questionable. I think it will be an interesting draft season and I’m sure we will all be saying WTF by the end of it.

We always do.

I would love an upgrade at backup running back. I just happen to think that Clinton Portis at this stage of his career is the opposite of an upgrade; a downgrade, if you will. At this stage of his career, with his best performance 3 seasons ago, and with 19 games missed in the past 2 seasons, I just can’t see how anyone would ever want him right now.

I'm sorry I'm not calling it Jamaal and Co.

Jamaal’s most likely done… it’s not Herreman’s and Co.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

Resign Harrison and focus on the defense. Enough said.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

Great News is...

Harrison got 2nd round tender today, so we don’t need any veteran presence. I’d expect a late draft pick similar to Scott from last year… hopefully a better pick this time around and maybe some kickoff return potential?
