SBNation NFL Mock Draft: Eagles Don't Take An Offensive Lineman

The guys at SBNation.com have been running mock drafts since before the season ended and for the most part the Eagles have taken an offensive lineman. Usually it's Gabe Carimi from Wisconsin. This time, that's not the case. At #23, the Eagles take a corner.

Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado. Asante Samuel has a reputation as a freelancer, and the team can do a lot better than either Ellis Hobbs, Joselio Hanson or Dimitri Patterson across from him. Smith is a big, smooth athlete that could end up being the second cornerback off the board come April.

Mel Kiper has Smith rated as his #3 corner behind Patrick Peterson and Prince Awakamura. What makes Smith intriguing is his size. At 6-2, 205 he'd easily be the biggest corner on the Eagles and could finally be a guy that could match up with bigger WRs in the NFC East. Plus, if the six foot Trevard Lindley develops into a contributor the Eagles would have some real size overall at corner. Last year the Eagles were lining up the 5-10 Asante Samuel & Dimitri Patterson along with the 5-9 Ellis Hobbs and Joselio Hanson.

I would agree with this

If FA hasnt started by draft time….Otherwise, it would be best to draft a OL(if available) early in the draft I would think…..who knows….

Drafting CB’s, we have a pretty good track-record. If he grades out and we get him, great. We just really need to upgrade the position.

Your joking right? He’s the best DB to ever get into the NFL. If he were here right now everyone would be screaming to cut samual cause Jack would look that good. He’s almost as good a DB as TO is a wideout. God I love TO I sleep with a poster of him over my bed cause I hope his greatness will dribble down on me.

I definitely think that Jimmy Smith is a ‘sexier’ pick than getting a lineman in the first. That said, with Justice getting surgery and King Dunlap being mediocre at his best, getting a lineman in the first seems likely.

But, what lost us more games? Patterson/Hobbs/Hanson getting burned every game (see red zone defense) or Justice getting burnt—or by extension, Vick getting hurt?

"Get 'Em"

by FlyEagles15 on Feb 22, 2011 1:06 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Depends highly on 2 things:

1) Free Agency/ the you know who sweepstakes

2) The news about Justice. If the scope does end up revealing a more serious issue OL become that much more important. We’d almost have to address that. Of course we do have Mudd and he’s supposed to be a miracle worker so we might get away with taking talent later on.

Best case scenario is the owners stop acting like a bunch of A-holes and we’re able to have FA before the draft plus trade Kolb for at least a first rounder so we have at least one hole already filled and an extra pick to take care of everything else with a top flight talent.

by Eric Gaskill on Feb 21, 2011 6:24 PM EST reply actions

Jimmy smith would be a good value pick were we to stay at 23. A bit like nate last year where the value was about right for the pick. Then go guard in the 2nd and use our extra 5 to trade up in the 3rd for Greg Jones to play will

by NZeagle on Feb 21, 2011 6:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Smith

He does look pretty tall in that picture……wouldnt mind those attributes at all on this team…. Curious as to what is his front/back speed.

Is there a drill for CB at the combine that clocks back speed and/or conversing from back to front?

Love Jimmy Smith

If we take a corner it should be him, but i’d rather we sign Nnamdi and draft o-line in the 1st

agreed.

i think he might end up being the best CB outta this draft, a couple years down the road.

Honestly

I would be happy to take Jimmy Smith, even if we sign Asomugha, we’d have a mean Nickel Defense, and in the future, Trevard Lindley could play RCB with Jimmy Smith our LCB

Michael Vick for MVP

by maximdim on Feb 21, 2011 7:10 PM EST reply actions

I don’t disagree with this. My only concern is the right side of the OL is massively depleted. Especially if Justice is out for good, and Nick & MJG go unsigned (as they should).

I don’t see how the OL is any more depleted than the CB position. They’re of equal need.

by JasonB on Feb 21, 2011 7:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I do

There is no current depth at OL with Justice/Cole & MJG out. RCB is one position which could be filled, in theory by the current players signed. OL has more holes to fill, starters and backups.

One would argue that one more year in the system + training camp + better position coaches=

the same players performing better.

Bottom line, I think we need to address both positions equally in the offseason via FA and the Draft.

A match—up between Jimmy Smith and Dez Bryant or between Jimmy Smith and Hakeem Nicks would be great. I can’t even begin to explain how high I am on Jimmy Smith, I really hope this happens.

Agreed

Smith is one of my favorite prospects in the whole draft and he has the potential to be really really good. Would easily be the most physical CB on the team.

I'd definately be down with drafting a top teir CB first

I think we could fill our O-line needs thru later rounds and/or FA…and if we did actually get NA, I couldn’t wait to see how good he’d be after being an understudy to the best CB tandem in the league.

Oof.

You know what I liked in those videos besides his ‘physicality’?. His demeanor. It looks like the dude just plays—doesn’t celebrate much after plays, almost a no nonsense kind of guy. Of course, this analysis is purely anecdotal as I’ve only seen a few videos on him.

I love the pick if we dont do anything to upgrade in FA. He seems very raw and relies on his physical attributes to much. Thats okay, he has all the potential in the world.

I love it!

I'd be ok with this.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

by wild_eagle on Feb 22, 2011 12:37 AM EST reply actions

I think we should aggressively target asomugha, if we sign him I say draft OL.in 1st round. and look for more OL help in free agency. Keep kolb, unless there is a crazy good offer, then draft OLB, DE, S, RB

by rich p on Feb 22, 2011 12:44 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think we’ll be able to draft around the premise of banking on Asomugha or any other FA because of the stupid CBA. So Jimmy Smith seems plausible.

I like Brandon Harris as well!

by Lip-Out on Feb 22, 2011 1:21 AM EST reply actions

I don't think he'll be around at 23 ..

I think he’s going to have a sick combine and jump into the top 15-20, but since we always seem to trade up into that range anyway, we’ll probably still grab him if the FO likes him

by I3irdMan3901 on Feb 22, 2011 1:49 AM EST reply actions

I’d be pissed beyond pissed if we settled on Brandon Harris as our solution at CB. Highly touted coming into Miami, never lived up to the billing IMO.

And he’s smallish; may have helped in run-support in college. … In the NFL he’s got victim written all over him.

cba

the thing that sucks about the draft this yr, is that its before free agency so who ever doesnt address there issues in the draft is going to over pay in free agency
which scares me about some of the free agents that “might” be a avalible:
Nnamdi Asomugha
Barrett Ruud
doug free
carl nicks ext….

by eggagles on Feb 22, 2011 8:06 AM EST reply actions

I want the Eagles to draft Temple's Muhammad Wilkerson.

6-5 305 lbs. He’s going to be a monster DT that can play in a 4-3 or 3-4. That could give the Eagles flexibility if they ever decide to switch defenses and if they don’t want to resign Patterson or Bunk.
