Around SBN: The Most Dangerous Division in Sports

Did anyone learn anything from past history?

Fans are SO quick to over react instead of sitting down and looking at a situation with sound objectionable analysis. How many times does the FO have to make a crazy or what fans and so-called experts aka sports jouranlists think are crazy moves that are surely going to drown the franchise... Only to be proven wrong again and again and again.

Phil Sheridan thinks this is a crazy move that puts Andy Reids career in jeopardy. Oh wait, wasn't it when we decided to get rid of McNabb that Andy put his neck out there because it meant we were "rebuilding."

Oh, and starting that QB who no one (including myself) thought he was capable enough to run a complex offense... What as his name again? Michael Vick. How many claimed the season was lost after that surprising week 3 move? I think more than half of BGN made that claim.

Let's not forget these "irrational" crazy free agency moves too. You know, how could we survive without Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent? That 2004 pro bowl secondary was made up of 2 new starters and was supposed to be the weakness because this FO is so crazy (and cheap too) and didn't want to pay Bobby and Troy. Dawkins, Trotter, Douglas, Duce, man the list goes on...  How does a team who keeps evolving their roster keep winning? So irrational!

Hell, the Kolb draft had people flailing. Why would we draft a QB, we already had a pro bowl QB (although had some serious injury history at the time). Hell that whole draft was pregraded at a D. It's a shame Celek and Bradley had to prove everyone wrong, once again.

 Sit back, and relax.

Overstating it a bit, perhaps. It is a wise move. Unlike, say, making Castillo the defensive coordinator.

This is a no-brainer...

I totally agree with you, Joe. It seems like the crazier the move, the more likely it has been successful for Reid. Personally, I think Reid is a much better personnel guy than game time coach. He seems to do pretty well in drafting and with roster moves.

Although it’s been a while since we’ve seen this type of turnover with the coaching staff, I think Reid deserves some leeway.

Like most Eagles fans, I was puzzled by the move. But unlike Eagles fans, I’m willing to take a wait-and-see approach.

After all, like you said Joe, history has shown us that this will probably work out.

Releasing McNabb was almost a complete disaster. Reid was lucky he had Vick behind Kolb to save our asses. Kolb was obviously the wrong choice and the way we were using Vick was a joke. We lucked into that choice. Unless we luck into this one, I don’t see it working.

Luck or not

Reid knew he had the option. We weren’t watching the development of the two nearly as closely as they were. He may have known that should the season not go well for Kolb, he would have had Vick to throw in who was coming along fine. Things just worked out naturally to force his hand, and it was all well and good.

Trading McNabb was fine considering we had a #2 and #3 QB better than any other team’s #2. It isn’t every day that you have that type of advantage, and they took it. Besides, we’re still taking picks off the Skins and McNabb would almost certainly be walking for nothing right now (or as soon as the CBA gets worked out).

Currently searching for a better signature.

The dude has studied defenses for years and has game planned against every defensive scheme imaginable. It’s a lot easier to break things down when you know how they work. He doesn’t need to be an expert in the secondary, that’s easy because there are only so many coverages. Get a good secondary coach and we’ll be fine.

The thing is

There was at least SOME precedent for those moves. Where is this coming from? A career offensive line coach becoming COORDINATOR.
Sadly, the only move I can think of that even comes close is switching Segrest from ST coach to D-Line coach, and that went horribly.

No what I mean is

If some other team had had success with a similar move (moving a guy from a position coach on one side to the coordinator gig on the other) then there would be precedent.
But nobody has every done anything like this, and I think that’s because it’s just plain crazy.

I don’t want to insult Castillo, because he’s a terrific O-Line coach.
But Mike Singletary is a great LB coach. Does that mean he’d be a good offensive coordinator?
Would Mike Martz be a great DC?
Would Jim Johnson have been a great OC?
All those guys knew X’s and O’s very well, but those kind of moves are out of left field.

This team is LOADED with offensive talent and both of the past two years it has padded the scoring stats with big games against bad teams but has underperformed in the big games.

I give Marty credit for Vick’s renaissance and for exploiting matchups with Desean against weaker secondaries, but I (and again, I see the argument against it) don’t see this as a truly elite offense until it can consistently put pressure on teams like the Packers, Bears, and Giants (in both games, I felt the offense was too sporadic even though we won).

How much of that blame should be on Marty? I don’t know. But I’m not overly impressed with him (though I’m certainly not calling for his head)

Bit of revisionism at work here

McNabb had to go at one point or another. The really dramatic move would have been after the ‘08 NFC championship game which a fair amount of people called for. Instead the Eagles tried to retool a bit & load up on offense in ’09 and ended up 1 and done in the playoffs. Most Eagles’ fans I know were ready to see McNabb go last year and realized change was needed.

As for Bobby Taylor, please. He was done and it was clear as day. Only the yahoos wanted to see him resigned. Troy Vincent was a different story though. He still played at a fairly high level his last year here. There were also the advocates who wanted to resign him and possibly move him to SS. Ultimately what the Bills did with Vincent but he injured his knee & was plagued by injury problems much of ’04 and ’06. Vincent had a nice season at S for the Bills in ’05.

Castillo played LB in college and USFL

I dont know how anyone can be upset by this move. At this point, we should all be in the middle…and take the wait and see approach.

Upset?

Of course not. Not unless it fails.

But worried? Concerned? We all have a right to be that.

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

Nice read!

Phillies in the World Series, Flyers in the Stanley Cup, now all we need is the Philadelphia Eagles in the Superbowl. Arlington, Texas 2011...

What do we have in common with the Readskins and the Bengels?

Well, if you didn’t know its that we don’t have any Superbowl rings either. (Skins have like 3 or something, but none since 91.)

If you don’t want to be pessimistic, then don’t. I certainly understand where you coming from there. It gets old, real fast.

But come on, you can’t be serious. Are you really hyped that our offensive line coach, who hasn’t coach defense in 20 years, is now running our defense. You could be, but I feel that you are probably lying to yourself, or your a Reid nuthugger.

We talked about this before, Juan isn’t one of the “best in the business,” at least from where I am sitting. Did you not see our abysmal pass/run blocking this year? No where near the best. Wasn’t that one of the reasons, if not thee reason Vick is now our man? Kolb couldn’t last, or at least we couldn’t run the same offense that Reid loves with him and that terrible line of ours.

Have you not seen the last five seasons? Maybe we have “one of the top offenses,” or whatever, but I know that I saw us struggle for five years getting a push in the red zone. WTF? You think all of that midnight oil burnt would help the guy figure that one out. He didn’t.

I heard that Peters was a beast in the run game when we picked him up. I have only seen glimpses of this. Well, I can tell you that some days I am awesome at math, but that doesn’t make me a good math problem solver over the long term.

I am not going to belabor this point, but I am not happy at all with this move. Could it work? Sure. Is it probable that most offensive coordinators with a lot of experience are going to be enjoying a huge advantage in some situations? Yeah, I think so.

Finally, this is Andy Reidtards’ fault. Dude cannot for the life of him understand clock management. This problem has been going on for years. He hasn’t won my heart over with his resume, which is riddled with weak ass conference wins during the early years. This guy is a fraud. And unlike Charlie Manual who hired himself a lot of smart baseball coaches and put them around him, Reidtard just keeps stockpiling Yesmen, and he continues with the same old. Which hasn’t been all that because when we did go to the SB, he got outcoached, and our QB looked lost in the 4th quarter. Not something I like to see in the guy everyone loves here.

PS. Don’t get this confused with the Steelers and their consistency. Dick LaBeau is the man down there, and as far as I am concerned he is the one intangible that has kept the Steelers going strong. And they draft better too.
