Illegal Forward Pass: wild_eagle edition.

If you guys missed it, Uda and I are going to be taking turns week after week breaking down some of the most memorable plays in recent Eagles history. Uda will be doing the offense, while I'll be doing the defense (mostly I think because we each understand our respected sides better than the other).

Star-divide

For my first play I really wanted to start off with a bang. I didn't want to get an INT, in fact I just wanted to get what is one of my favorite plays (I have a top 3 BTW) I have ever seen happen on the football field, that's out of any team, any level, both offense and defense. So without further hesitation I give you..... (cue drum roll)...

Sheldon Brown wrecks Reggie Bush!!!!

Ok to begin with we line up with a 5 man front. We have 5 players with their hands on the ground looking as if they're going to be blitzing. We only send four and actually get some decent pressure on the QB, I think if this play were anything but a screen pass we make a sack here. Keep in mind one of the 4 (the far man on the DL in this video) is Stewart Bradley, who rushes off the edge.

As far as the LB's go it appears we designate Trotter to the RB. Let's just say we're extremely lucky Sheldon made this play, I think this is huge for the Saints if he didn't.. The other LB pretty much goes and plays a deep third.

The DB's do a pretty good job in this one (not that there was any time to mess up) and it looks as if we were preparing for this play anyway. Sheldon literally takes 0 steps backwards on this one which leads me to believe he was playing zone with the safety picking up the loose man or that Sheldon just 100% free lanced there, to be honest there wasn't much time to allow the play to develop and see either way..

Final thoughts:

See this isn't just my favorite play because it shows that if you execute a play, watch enough film and learn another teams tendency's you can devise a way for players like Sheldon to get in there and make a big hit like that.. The DL did such a good job getting pressure that they OLman couldn't get away to block for Bush, the LB's although Trotter was a step slow had pretty good coverage and Sheldon read that screen, watched it happen and attacked when he diagnosed where it was going.. And to that I say Kudo's Mr. Brown, I miss seeing you in Eagles green.

I wasn’t so much against getting rid of Sheldon Brown as I am/was with getting rid of Sheldon Brown and failing to legitimately replace him. In any case, I miss his good days with us, and this play was a great one.

Should have had the youtube vid embedded

but good post rec. never thought of it as Sheldon free lancing

If Revis has an Island, Asomugha should have a continent.

It isn’t so much that he is free lancing, its that he is in zone coverage and sees the screen pass developing so he runs up to make the play and just happens to get there at the perfect time and lays out Reggie.

by Bleediots on Feb 19, 2011 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

I've thought about stuff like that...

Everything I do keeps going back to Military. I really want to do SERE in the Air Force, or Air Rescue diver in the Navy…

But honestly I’m going to get my AA which is basically all the general bullshit they make you do.. My parents own a business, I help out alot running it so I know what to do..

I’m actually really interested in astronomy, physics, chemistry, and much much more… I’m a smart kid, I’m going to probably have 3 majors with a minor in Astronomy and a few other things.

But yeah I have actually looked into getting a minor in business and after my 4-6 years in the military (if I choose to get out) taking the G.I. Bill and putting it towards opening my own gym, and making it more affordable for people. I can only afford it every other month at this point because of school, and I know many people can’t even do 1 month a year so I wanna give everybody a release, help everybody get healthy and hopefully make my area of the world a better place.

it's really hard to tell with broadcast videos

without the back half, but I’m pretty sure you guys are playing an under up front and combo coverage, qtrs to the open side with the X, cov 2 to the strong side.

The line is interesting, because they bring the sam up and line up under, and then bring him and drop the rush end to play that seam combo to the qtrs side, he’s definitely not dropping to a 3rd though, not from the line, and you’re two deep anyway.

the lbs, aside from the rusher, look like they’re playing the flat (so trotter runs to cut off the swing pass) and then the Will (or Mike if you count the dropping end as a LB) is playing the middle hook walling the #3 receiver, the Y.
Cool play because it’s not crazy complicated, just a matter of moving a lb and de swapping responsibilities, but it’s effective, especially underneath.

I don't get why you chose this play.

It was all flash.
By the look of it ( and my reaction ) Bush should have expired right there on the field.
But after 15 seconds he was fine; and the Eagles lost the fucking game; because the Saints ran over us.

I love your effort, but, come on, man. The fore arm shiver that Hopkins put on Ernest Givens ( I think ) back in the day was 10,000 times better because it scared the shit out of the whole Oiler receiving corps for the whole game, which the Eagles won!

I picked this play because win, lose, tie, or all out nuclear war I love that play.. It was perfect from beginning to end, top to bottom. The play call was just right so Sheldon could freelance, the blitz was more than good enough, the LB’s were all in the right place… That play right there wraps everything that was Jim Johnson’s D into one 2-5 second play.
