Trent Cole Gets Slap On The Wrist For Okung Flip
Trent Cole told reporters today that he has been fined $7,500, pretty light by NFL standards, for his MMA style takedown of Seahawks OT Russell Okung, who tore his pectoral on the play and is now out for the season. Seahawks fans were understandably outraged by what they saw as a cheap shot, while Eagles fan not surprisingly didn't think it was an excessively violent play. We've got the video below and you can judge for yourself.
The guys were both engaged in a block, the whistle was blowing literally at the moment it happened and while it wasn't necessary to flip the guy, it was mostly just bad luck that Okung was injured on the play. If you look at it, it doesn't appear to be the type of play that ends a guy's season. You see guys getting slammed to the ground every single down in the NFL and unless it's a QB, nothing ever is done about it.

Ehhh. That seemed pretty unnecessary. Especially with it being away from the ball.

If this happened to Peters we would have raised hell

I agree, but it still doesn’t look like a play that is going to end a guy’s season.

Right, this wasnt like the douche
who took a dive at our guys leg (after he sized him up) well after the whistle.

Shady is the best RB in the NFL not AP

They could be paying cole for providing great entertainment
COLE WORLD!!!
Vince been here less than a month and already done ****ed up
smh (dream team)
I think:
1) Okung should have stopped blocking at the whistle
2) Seachicken fans are a bunch of whiny bitches, so this will give them something new to cry about since nobody wants to hear them piss and moan about the Super Bowl anymore.
I have to agree
Okung was working on riding time blocking from the back. Clearly if Cole had not stopped playing he would have risked injury at being pancaked.
The video is pretty plain – illegal block begain at 0:05 and lasted until 0:10 when cole applied the hip toss.
What were cole’s options with a 300+ guy riding on his back locking his arm in a chicken wing…
If the guy wants to cry foul… he’d better turn himself in. Don’t be messing when it leads to confessing.

If the Refs stole a Super Bowl from the Eagles like that
we would be outraged. I’ve never seen a more poorly called game in my life, and the ref even came out years later and stated that he still thinks about the game and how bad he fucked up that day.
Who knows what would have happened if it was evenly called. I do think the statue of limitations is up on their whining, but the shitty part is never have I heard one Steelers fan admit that it was a lopsided game in terms of the calls. That’s the fan base that lost every ounce of respect from me over that whole thing.
Try not to take the above message too seriously.
That block didn’t look especially legal. If Okung had stayed in the rulebook, he might still be playing this week.
AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a fucking clock.

This
It looked to me like Okung was the one that locked his arm around Trent’s, and Cole was pissed there was no holding call (since it was pretty blatant).

Those are some pretty sick Youtube comments.
Cole was probably pissed at the way the game (and the season was going). The Okung kept holding Cole after the whistle probably pushed him over the edge (how a lot of altercation start it seems like). Cole was wrong but I feel him.
Sn: Isn’t the pectoral a chest muscle or something like that. How Okung hurt it from that slam? It didn’t look that bad.
"I once had a friend named Charlie, and Charlie was always late to school
He had a black eye one day, but he wouldn’t say just what happened to him
Charlie got mad in class one day, and stood up with a .22 pistol
Told everybody that he couldn’t take it anymore, he was over being the victim"
Pectoral muscle is your chest muscle (man boobs). It connects your chest to your arm, so when he was thrown down while Cole was holding his arm, it stretched out and tore. If Cole had let go of his arm sooner, maybe he wouldn’t have gotten injured.
I don't think COLE had Okungs arm locked..
looked more the other way around and the guy commiting the flagrant foul got the booboo.

Fine was appropriate
I don’t think that flipping someone is against the rules but it was a bit late.
That is a monster holding call refs missed.

If he wasn't holding Cole he might not have torn his Pec
Just a thought.
It's two minutes left in the game.. up by 3 scores
Why the hell are you blocking like that Okung?
Just push each other, bounce off and chill for the next 2 seconds.. But he goes and holds Trent Cole the entire time, for what reason?
If Cole just came out of nowhere and flipped Okung, then yeah that’s fine, fine him 20,000.. But if Okung kept holding Cole and Cole doesn’t flip him, Cole could easily get injured on that play, especially if Okung were to push him down or something
I guess 7,500 is okay, but if Okung doesn’t get injured I doubt there’s a fine.
Just wait until December..

Maybe as Eagles fans we’re just not used to seeing a team actually play a full 60 minutes, but Okung is doing his job there. He’s blocking hard because that’s what you do when you want to win games.
It seems to me like an obviously dirty play; the only reason Cole would do it is to try to hurt him. If Peters had torn a muscle because Clemons did the same thing to him, 95% of Eagles fans would be outraged.
The game was already won and the play was to the opposite side. I don’t wish any player harm but that one’s on Okung.

Okung was holding
but that was very unnecessary of Cole, Okung wasn’t holding him anymore, only reason he was still jogging with him is because Cole was getting a better grip on his arm to toss him.
Not the first season ending injury your DE’s have shelled out after the play..
Lichtensteiger
Supposedly Tapp had a dirty play away from the ball which caused Kory’s MCL and ACL to tear, it was away from the cameras since the ball had already been thrown. But that’s when Trent got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, he was pissed because he saw what happened.
Nothing was really made of it since no camera’s caught it, so there’s no telling what really happened.
Oh well
Okung really had it coming. dude was holding all game, cole was frustrated. Action meet consequence, I don’t think you will like him very much.
Shady is the man.

Seahawks fans have a right to be mad
as I wanted to punch Goodell after the 2nd Robinson hit. However, I don’t it’s as malicious as their fans are saying. I’d say its the combination of a long, terrible game, where as always he didn’t get a single holding call even though they were clear on TV, and the fact that Okung was wrapped around Cole from behind and blatantly holding him. Cole probably took out his frustration on Okung. Unnecessary and deserved a higher fine but it’s not like he was trying to kill him.

Yeah
With the Rbinson hits there was intent, this was a “get off me” type reaction to the hold. I’m pretty sure Cole wasn’t trying to end Okungs season, just unfortunate it happened. But if it were the other way around…I would be demanding blood! LOL
Good points
Intent to injure was definitely there for Dunta (they should have suspended his ass), Cole’s was frustration getting the better of him.
Now on to the real question of the day…
Is Roger going to fine Jared Allen for punching Edwards straight in the weiner?
bull!
Dude was holding after the whistle ! I would have flipped his Anus Too! League just greedy.
by pragit on Dec 7, 2011 3:49 PM EST via mobile reply actions
He sustained the "block" (i.e. blantant holding) all the way 'til the first wristle
Maybe he shouldn’t have been trying so hard when the game has already been decided and the play with a run to the other side
Come on lets be honest if it was Peters everyone here would be pissed
Sure the guy played through the whistle, but if it was Peters that was thrown everyone on here would feel the same way. Did Cole go a bit overboard, yeah probably. Was he being held, yeah probably. He deserved to be fined.
More specifically
If Peters was thrown and got injured as a result then yes, everyone would be pissed.
A guy getting thrown down in the NFL is something that happens every play.

Correct
Runyan played threw the whistle all the time, even past it many times. Everyone here loved that he did that, but if this happened to him, he got injured, everyone would be screaming bloody murder. So it’s not like this doesn’t ever happen, it’s just that Okung got hurt on this play.
Looks like he...
… missed two a letters: strength
and I added an "a"...

Look at the 4 second mark; T. Cole made a move to separate himself from Okung and was being held so he couldn’t release. I imagine this was happening to Cole the entire game, as it has been most of the season.
Sorry Okung, but shit happens. Maybe if you let the dude release from you without holding him this wouldn’t have happened, but you didn’t, so it did.
The Jruth shall be told.
