Moving Forward

As is the case with most fans, I’ve been wrestling with where to go with this team. If Andy stays, I and think he will (and should) be given another year, he’s going to need to make some changes. I don’t think you can just bring this unit back and expect big things. You have to break ties with the bad attitudes and empower the strong leaders. It would appear that Castillo’s fate is likely sealed. I like the guy but this defense is awful. I'd love to see Spags come back to the promised land and lead the D for us if things don't work-out in St. Louis. From a personnel standpoint we clearly need to see some improvement at linebacker and safety. I believe the defensive front is really pretty solid from a talent and attitude perspective. I don’t like where we are with DRC or Asante. If given my choice, I’d cut DCR and commit to Asante. DRC has shown nothing and seems to be an attitude problem. On offense, I think we suffer from a major lack of leadership. This is an indictment of Vick. He has poor leadership skills and, frankly, rarely comes through in the clutch. Having just signed him to a long-term, big dollar deal, this is disappointing. I’ve pondered this one extensively and think there may be a solution but it would require a major move and a willing partner. In Vick you have a purported MVP caliber player. Where could you get that sort of value in return in tandem with a willing partner and endup with the leadership we are currently lacking? San Diego. Norv is gonna be gone at the end of this season. They are going to be looking at change and, it seems to me, Rivers could benefit from a change of scenery. The presence of Vick may also be an interesting lure for a good coaching candidate. So… big move there but you get leadership and, in my opinion a MVP caliber QB. I think you also need to cut ties with DeSean – tag and trade. He is a major attitude problem and we must fix the locker room. We all saw what this O looks like without a deep threat against AZ. Interestingly, Vincent Jackson is a free agent. This would give Rivers a familiar face and give us a deep threat. I think at the end of this we are certainly no worse from a talent standpoint, have found a leader, and are ready to move forward. I may be lost in the fog but I just don’t see a way forward with the leadership on this roster. I realize that we need to make sure that River’s shoulder is healthy before we make a major move like this but, if healthy, I would love to see him in the Andy/Marty system.
