This was never all about 2011. The failure came so early, and the anvil they have been lugging around grew to be so heavy, that the resulting furor drowned out everything. But this was always a 2-year vision, at least. Amid the disappointment, that needs to be restated. Reid should be back in 2012, for the reckoning.

At least Frank and Eskin are honest about it.

They basically say, “I am going to use my time on the air and in print to say and write press releases for Andy Reid touting his greatness so he’ll continue to give me greater degrees of access.” They are Reid’s whores.

You may be right. There has to be some kind of reason they make excuses for him. No matter how you spin it, this season has been a complete disaster. And it’s not just this year.

This season has been a complete failure with no redeeming qualities.

Yet, homerist hacks like Hofmann and Eskin continue to treat Reid like he’s Bill Walsh. There’s definitely something in it for them like extra scoops and improved access. They certainly do not count as “journalists.” More like pr guys.

You got to remember who you are dealing with here.......

EB only dwells on the negatives , and refuses to see any positives. DUH.
But I do tend to agree with his view of some of the completely sickening displays of homerism by the press.
But this is no way our worst season ever, or a firm reason to throw the grenade in the facility.

I can understand the pessimism, honest. But let me tell you about a glass that is half full of water ...

If I were to show you a glass half full of water, you would expect my next question to be “is it half full, or half empty.” The problem is neither. My question is how much does the glass weigh. You might say about 8-10oz. I say, it depends. I can hold that glass of water for 10 mins, no problem. If I hold it for 10 hrs, you are going to have to call an ambulance. Same weight but the longer you hold it, the more pain it builds.
Ergo, no coach or player wants to leave the fans or press with a glass to hold on to. To say that we will tank this game because of a draft pick selection is not a likely scenario as it will call more attention to the coaches/players jobs as the offseason progresses.
I know its kinda corny but I got a similar explanation in an email.

Shady damn near got the rushing title. We now know what a beast we have at running back. Celek looks like he’s coming back to that 2009 form we were all excited about. Alex Henery looks like he’ll be a really good kicker for years to come.

The Legend

by KJ Brophy on Dec 29, 2011 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

"Come On" is right !

been an Eagles fan a LONG time but living outside Philly area for some 30 years now, so i don’t know Hoffman but my first reaction to this article was “self-serving”. my second was "is the Daily News one of those “Martians stole my Mule” tabloids?"
having been a novice journalist, even i know that the first rules include objectivity and to take yourself out of the story. even before he gets to quoting himself (really?! and i thought i had ego..), it’s clear there’s a self-serving agenda…there’s not a shred of balance
so let me offer a different, trust me, more objective, viewpoint – that of a business man.
if my business produced x% of market share and I spent additional budget on advertising and added high priced sales makers and made bold organizational changes designed to improve it, say, a new VP of Sales then my expectation is that next year’s share will be HIGHER, maybe not by a lot but definitely not worse. Else i’m going to look closely at my own decisions, the personnel and the spend. Can’t say, “but your business was unexpectedly closed for a few months!” the entire market was closed, for my competitors too. I don’t say “despite our competition actually getting worse i’m okay losing market share because that was actually the plan to get worse before getting better”. that is a loser’s excuse, a victim mentality and the words i hear just before i utter “really? is that so ? well, then i’m not only firing you for your results, but for poor business planning”.
i’d write Rich Hoffman an email but my guess is that the average Eagles fan has a better chance of grasping this simple applicable business logic than he does.
Rich – ask your editor if it’s okay for you to lose subscribers as part of a “two year plan” when you were arguably one year away from achieving the subscriber goal the publisher has been targetting for 50 years. and say hello to Andy at dinner….at his house….just before he ghost writes your columns….

This is a great point.

First of all, to answer your first question, yeah, the DN is quickly turning into the National Enquirer.

The second part of your statement is really intriguing and it should have Eagles fans wondering exactly what Lurie’s goals are. You’re right. If you bring in better personnel, more advanced technology, and have a more aggressive marketing plan, you should trounce your competition. ESPECIALLY if the competition underperforms and my competitors essentially try to hand me the entire market so I can sell at will and destroy them.

Is the goal of the Eagles SIMPLY to make money? If so, then Lurie is to be applauded. He has a huge line of season ticket customers clamoring for his product and he kept people intrigued this year with big ticket free agent acquisitons. And if this is the primary objective, there is no way “Stand Pat” Andy Reid should be fired. Ever. He is a cash cow (literally…he’s fucking large) and his consistent mediocrity ensures that the fan base will never become COMPLETELY disgusted (see Marion Campbell era Eagles for what that looks like).

If, however, the goal is to WIN a Super Bowl and not go 8-8, Roseman, Banner and Reid should be fired for gross incompetence.

Root for a loss this weekend

You know Reid will do his damnest to win a completely meaningless game to spin the ‘8-8 and we closed strong’ nonsense.

It would be a real shame because it would hurt the Eagles next year in a couple of capacities including costing the Eagles a 3rd place divisional schedule vs a 2nd place in the NFC East and it could easy cost the Eagles at least 5-6 places in the draft:

(Top 11)
St. Louis: 2-13
Indy: 2-13
Minn.: 3-12
Cleveland: 4-11
Tampa: 4-11
Jacksonville: 4-11
DC: 5-10
Miami: 5-10
Buffalo: 6-9
KC: 6-9
Carolina: 6-9

Philly: 7-8 (vs DC)
Chicago: 7-8 (vs. Minn.)
SD: 7-8 (vs Oakland)
Arizona: 7-8 (vs Seattle)
Seattle: 7-8 (vs Arizona)
Oakland: 8-7 (vs SD)
NY Jets: 8-7 (vs. Miami)
Denver: 8-7 (vs. KC)
Dallas: 8-7 (vs. NYG)
NYG: 8-7 (vs. Dallas)

Dallas/NYG and Oakland/Denver/SD will win their division this week and be behind the Eagles in the draft but if the Eagles’ win they could lose 5-6 slots in the 1st round. Instead of a Top 15 pick (12-13) the Eagles could closer to 20.

Root for the Seahawks too because a Cards’ victory could the Eagles a few spots with their 2nd round pick. Late season close by the Cards has pissed me off because that should have been a top 10 pick in the 2nd round.

by MG77 on Dec 29, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

for us fans looking forward to next year ... none.

What it does is, similar to preseason (more meaningless games):
1.) it showcases people and tries to solidify a possibly questionable roster spot during the offseason.
2.) people like DeSean and McCoy who will be looking for a new contract will be on their best performances… well maybe not DeSean.
3.) McCoy and Babin still have an opportunity to set records.

"Obviously, I lobbied for him to be here. But what a difference a year makes." -- Donovan McNabb

by thePurpleLion on Dec 29, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Because....

Players that win get used to the positive attention (Cheers / positive press) that winning brings.
On the other hand, players that lose get use to losing and the negative attention (boos / negative press) and after a while it effects their attitude and their play on the field could suffer more.
I don’t want to be a fan of losers’.

I grew up in Pa. but my job has taken me deep into the swamps of louisiana where all you here is "who dat, who dat" and on clear nights when the wind is gently blowing from the northwest you can hear the wimpers and sobs of jerry and his herd of cowgirls.

by eagleflownsouth on Dec 29, 2011 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

All of this

and besides players don’t give a shit if the team they play for gets the 10th or 18th pick. They will play to win, no matter what. Winning is contagious, everyone agrees with that. Why not go into next season on a high note, have that carry over.

It’s fools like you who want the Eagles to lose just to win your fantasy league as well I suppose. A true Eagles fan will want the win regardless of a few slots in the draft.

by slandog on Dec 29, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

A true Eagles fan will want the win regardless of a few slots in the draft.

I consider myself a true fan and want the players and coaches to try to win, but if they lose I won’t be upset about it. I’d really like to see some second and third stringers get some playing time. Why not see what they can do in game situations? Plus, why risk getting your star players injured just so you can win a meaningless game? Eagles are not going to the playoffs and winning won’t change that.

I’m not sure that anyone here has said that they want the Eagles to throw the game. They just won’t be upset if they lose. That doesn’t make them not fans. We didn’t make the playoffs this year so in their (and my) minds the season is over and they are thinking to 2012.

I say play it like a preseason game, play hard, and try to win. If you lose, oh well, maybe we have an easier schedule and better draft choices. The only argument against what I am saying is that there are people who paid good money to go to the game expecting to see the star players play, and I wouldn’t blame them for being pissed if that didn’t happen.

Go Eagles!

If you believe any of the BS spin about ‘winning carrying over’, you don’t read between the lines very well. More importantly, it statistically has been debunked (winning in Dec has almost no correlation to overall record the following year).

It matters for individual players and coaches. For the team, not so much.

Look at the Lions, I haven’t looked it up in a while, but I believe they won the last four games of last season, started out I think 5-0 or 6-0 this season (something like that). So it can affect a team. I heard Matthew Stafford do an interview a few weeks back say that winning out last season was huge because it gave us confidence coming into this season.

So sure it could really nothing on the overall record. But I’d rather have a confident team going into next year then just another ho-hum team.

Read between the lines or not and call it BS if you want, but it does help a team going out on a good note.

One meaningless game will do that with professionally paid athletes? Yeah right.

Well of course it doesn't have anything to do with the next seasons record

I never said that. But it does make the team feel better. Think about it would you rather look back to the previous season and see the year end on 4 wins or four losses? I’d bet 4 wins. 4 losses you’d be thinking, oh man, we have pretty much the same team as last season and we lost the last four games of the year…..what chance do we have this coming season.

They could still go 2-14, but as a player I’m sure it would feel better going out on a strong note. I’ve played athletics to the college level and it sure gave out team going out in winning style a better feeling. Wanting to get right at the offseason workouts and training.

The entire point of the regular season is to try to get a 1st round bye which notably boosts a team’s chances to get to a SB. Your reasoning makes almost no sense. Even 1-2 losses in an NFL season can be huge.

That's not the point of the season

The point of the season is to develop the team to the point that no-one else can beat them. The team gets better as it plays together and figures out its strengths and weaknesses.

This season is over. Getting better players in the draft will make them harder to beat next season.

Mr. Owl! How many picks does it take for Rex to get benched again?

Am I the only one who wants to caption this

“Rex Grossman looks on enthusiastically at the arrayed posteriors of his offensive linemen”
Or, more simply
Rex Grossman: “DAT ASS!”
