Congratulations to David Akers

I've never posted a FanPost, or FanShot or anything, so I apologize if there's any etiquette that I'm breaking.

I know he won't see this, but I still feel it necessary to give credit where credit is due. So...

CONTRAGULATIONS TO DAVID AKERS for setting an NFL season record with 42 field goals.

Akers was the Eagles kicker for most of what I can remember as an Eagles fan. I was actually quite disappointed that he was let go after last season, especially after taking into consideration that his mind wasn't 100% on the game when he missed that field go (due to his daughter's health). I wish Akers was still here, honestly.

Anyway, Congrats to Akers, one of the best place kickers in NFL history.

I may actually watch this years playoffs

Just to cheer for Akers and the 49ers. He’ll always be one of my favourite Eagles and it’s nice to see him just as reliable as ever.

Akers is awesome

Hes the most consistent player on my fantasy team

Indeed, he was 7-9 from 50+, what a year.

It’s an odd record, because it’s really all about opportunities. If the 49er offense could get into the end zone, he’d never have the chances.

Just wanted to say thanks

for coming over to BBV and talking shit last night.

It started a nice little run of Eagle and Joe D bashing and the thread needed that.

You went away so abruptly after that, what happened?

Eh...

They did some good things, but overall it was two mediocre teams and the Giants were better because of three key things, I would say.

1. Play calling by Jets OC. Sanchez threw it 59 times, all short stuff, even though they were running it very well. So the Giants D was able to rush the passer and they got to Sanchez enough.
2. Big plays by the Giants including getting three TO’s, and a 99 yard TD by Cruz.
3. Jets suck :-)

I got to tell you,

I will be ready to kill someone (just joking) if the Giants win a playoff game or 2, or the SB.
The way I see it they are a mediocre team, at best. Can’t run the ball (Bradshaw is tough, Jacobs is a slob, OL blows). QB too often under pressure. WRs dropping passes all game, running bad/wrong routes. DL rarely getting good pressure. Slow, non-tackling LBs. DBs who are no good at covering or tackling.

It is mind boggling to me that they are 8-7 and alive.
Can you point to one win that was a very good performance by both offense and defense against a team that played well?
I’m thinking the 8 wins were against 8 weak-ass, shitty opponents, on that day.

Good luck, but I wish yoiur team a grisly, painful death in the playoffs.

Those are all views to the extreme side of the analysis.

But they are not so far off as to call them ridiculous. Certain games, or portions of games you can describe any of the units as you state.

On the positive side, in three of our last four games we have run for over 100 yards, so there is a positive trend. Not surprisingly it coincides with 44 back in the mix. Run and pass blocking is inconsistent. At times good, great, or terrible.

Eli and the receivers are good enough to overcome the stupid mistakes, plus Gilbride gives them plenty of opportunities to succeed.

Run stopping is bad, pass rush good enough, back end is affected by injury and a terrible scheme.

Best game played I would say was @ NE. Hard to say because they haven’t put it together in all phases for 60 mins. And that’s because they are mediocre, as we are saying. They just have a great QB and passing attack that makes big plays and that is the difference between us being 6-10ish as opposed to 8-8 or 9-7

I didn’t mean to short change the LBs. Boley is pretty good vs the pass.

Yeah he's good

Are you of the mind that we are now seeing the Eagles that we were “supposed” to be seeing all year?

No

The same as I’m asking you about the Giants, the Eagles would have to beat a good team to meet my expectations.
I love it when they win, but who can’t beat the Jets right now?
Miami actually stoned the Eagles O for 3 out of 4 Quarters. Just like they did once in a while early in the season, the Eagles had a nice flurry in the 2nd Q. That and domination of Miami’s crippled, weak OL was enough.
The Cowboys flat out did not show up as a team in either game, on either side of the ball.

He is a great guy, and a great placekicker. He has suffered more than most, and endured.

I don’t get your point in detracting from his record. What good does it do you?
Do you have a financial interest in Akers not being given his due respect for his accomplishments this year? In his career?
I think those who follow BGN would like to know.

Detracting?

Facts are facts. He’s attempted 10 more FGs than any other kicker in the NFL. If he attempts one more FG, he’ll set the record for field goal attempts.

Point is, this is record is all about opportunity.

And accuracy.

But I was out of line.
He’s one of my favorite Eagles of all time. I feel awful about what he had to go through last year and I’m glad he came back from it. He’s one of the very best PK ever.

by waterfield on Dec 27, 2011 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

It is way more about opportunities than accuracy. Just sayin

He is a great kicker

but we have a guy who is really developing into a good kicker. Since his early season struggles he has really come on and been consistent.

Cowboys suck.

I wish he was still here too

But let’s not forget Akers chose not sign the transition tag. So atleast we tried to keep him.

Yeah, but...

with all the heat in the press after he missed the field goal (I remember seeing tons of articles saying he wouldn’t be back), do you think he may have felt like he wasn’t really wanted back? It’s quite possible that he may have felt it was just a courtesy gesture, not that he was really wanted to stay. And if I felt that way (not really wanted) about my situation, I probably wouldn’t have stayed either.

I remember one year Akers had like 6 tackles cause our kickoff coverage was awful. Ive respected him ever since

Akers vs. the Giants

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjaTQ0EPyRM

Also, a brief mention of Aker’s martial arts training: http://www.mmafacts.com/main.cfm?actionId=globalShowStaticContent&screenKey=cmpNews&htmlID=8879&s=mma

I don’t know how you quote (newb to posting here), but the line from the above article:

“…even kicker David Akers trains in various martial arts regiments during the offseason.”

Here’s a better one, an actual interview with Akers:

http://www.terrybender.com/terry_bender_david_akers.html

“During the offseason, Akers trains in Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu and Shaolin Kempo under the guidance of Allan Manganello at the Shaolin Kempo Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Louisville and at Maxercise in Philadelphia. Said Akers: “The martial arts influence is the part where you don’t think about [the kick]. You’ve trained yourself so much to where you go and just do it. Same thing in a fight. You prepare for that one instance where someone is coming at you, and you’re not trying to think.”
