It's Time For The Eagles Festivus Airing Of Grievances

Today I held my Philly sports Festivus airing of grievances over at SBNation Philly, but I wanted to have our own Festivus here at BGN. In case you don't know what Festivus is, I'll let the great Frank Costanza explain it to you.

"At the Festivus dinner, you gather your family around, and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the past year!"

My grievance is with my Michael Vick.

Look, we know you're a tough guy. We know you want to want to fight for every yard, but you're a six foot tall, 215 quarterback. Act like it! Sliding is not an incredibly complicated skill. These fat slobs who play baseball do it every day. Certainly a finely tuned athlete such as yourself can figure it out!

Air your grievances in the comments and we'll add the best to this post after the jump.

Beating a dead horse ...but...

1) Andy Reid – You hired an OL coach to be your DC in an “All-In” year. Everyone knows that when you go “All-In” and you lose. You’re gone!

2) Juan Castillo – You should climb the ladder just like everyone else in the business.

3) Howie Roseman – You had money…you didnt spend it wisely enough…

I don’t see this as an all in year, we have 3 picks in the top 50 a young set of weapons, and our defense is really young(which showed) so even if they struggle it isn’t like they’ll get any worse.

THIS is for all

the haters out there. We by no means have earned the right to be in the playoffs this year. But for you stupid, arrogant, over-hyping NFC east fans (giants, cowboys, redskins) You all started strong, pulled away from us and left us for dead like everyone else. You my friends are now choking on your own pride. None of you deserve to be there either in these playoffs coming. At least we haev a team that when we are on can beat anyone in this league. So if we do, for any reason, make the playoffs it is your teams fault. Let it go, call for your coaches head(all teams), your QB’s head(dallas & washington), your WR’s (gaints gotta be hating this), your FO to be wiped out, whatever it may be. Just remember this whole off-season & most of you will (pending the next 2 weeks) your teams let us in as they once again choked on their own we are better then everyone attitude. So please for the love of god, christmas, and the whole world, let it go. Your team as ours has sucked this year. Because you started better again does not make you better.

You watch Romo on Saturday.

You’re just repeating an old story that is short on truth and long on being a tired useless comment. Repeated by those who do not watch the games and just spout off what some TV hack just said. Or perhaps it’s simple fear? That might be closer to the truth. You so desperately need him to mess up so you can win.

by smeagle on Dec 23, 2011 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

right,

I have watched many cowboy games and Romo likes to choke on the big hard ones. Until he can prove other wise I will continue to say so. And redskins just cant for some reason figure out they are just missing a QB and Eli, I will admit has hands down been the best in this division this year but when his WR’s continue to drop TD passes he puts in their hands he will suffer. Hell he has been the best in our division the last 4 or 5 years but the giants always find a way to break down in the season. So you should go get a warm wash cloth (for the headache you will have and keep the swelling from the crying) and a depends for when you shit yourself cause Romo chokes again.

You want a flashy new contract. But you want to be overpaid by a mile. You’re as good as Larry Fitzgerald and should get his type of money? Fitzgerald doesn’t quit on plays he isn’t involve. Fitzgerald doesn’t lead the league in drops. Fitzgerald doesn’t half-ass on his route running. Fitzgerald doesn’t alligator arm passes. Fitzgerald doesn’t act like an all around prima donna. You are not Larry Fitzgerald.

You are a quitter. You are not a receiver, you are (at best) a play maker that has not been making plays this season. You are not as good as you think you are and do not deserve the type of money you want. You have thoroughly worn out your welcome with your attitude.

Screw you and hope you have fun on another team next season.

My grievance is with our special teams.

It’s almost as if the only thing they are told to do is to “not fuck up”. It almost surprising that a team with some much speed and talent on offense and defense can be so dull on special teams. Sure the coverage has been great, but we’re 29th in both returning punts and returning kickoffs (averages, mind you). But at least they are getting off the field fast enough so that I see Shady tear it up.

You should of known better than to take your OLINE coach and make him a D-Co without hiring him a consultant up front. Take away just two of those huge 4qtr break downs and we are driving into this week in control of our fate.

by NJEagle on Dec 23, 2011 3:09 PM EST via mobile reply actions

My complaints

Why has it taken 98% of the season to put together a solid defensive effort? I don’t care if Juan is the DC, this guy was always going about how he’s in the film room thinking up shit to do, gameplanning and “working around the clock”. If thats the case, this defense should be the first ranked defense in the league but this brings me to my next complaint.

Why can’t anyone tackle? It’s simple. Get low, head up, wrap up. Not dive at the feet with your head down and one arm out. Enough with the “I can arm tackle everything” mentality. No, you can’t. Go back to pee-wee football and let little kids teach you how to tackle because they are better at it than 9 out of our 11 starters on defense.

by WarGeist on Dec 23, 2011 3:24 PM EST reply actions

Tackling definitely an Achilles heel. I feel like it has been that way many years under Reid—perhaps a lack of attention to detail and fundamentals. Draft/bring-in guys who are already sound in the fundamentals of the game and you should not need to teach them.

festivus for the restofus!

My festivus airing of grievences has already included holiday drivers, forcing people to say “happy holidays” when “merry christmas” has already lost all meaning, and douchebags who knock on peoples doors at 8am when they know my shift sends me to bed at 4am.

But, my specific Eagles grievance: the systematic ignoring of positions and the inability to resign key players.

Reid deserves praise for his offensive growth and players, but he has completely botched this defense. First, its with a heavy reliance on Jim Johnson without managing to keep any of the future coaching talent JJ had brought in. Since its been a comedy of mistakes. Even during the JJ era, the switch to a 2 gap DT system hamstrung the defense because Reid simply refused to bring in the right players.

Since, he has not brought in a stand-alone defensive coordinator. Instead of admitting that he knows nothing about that side of the ball, he has placed puppets in its place and has consistantly ignored key positions.

He grew and developed Dawkins and Mikell into pro-bowl safeties, and allowed both to walk without a reasonable backup plan. Rookie safeties make very little impact, and when given opportunities to take one to groom, he went elsewhere.

Instead, he chose Allen in round 2, knowing it would take him years to get to where he needed to be. He had the chance to get difference makers, and instead he chose someone who plays a rotational position.

Instead of improving a weak linebacker corp or choosing a top-flight RCB, he chose a RG to give to a line coach who is known for maximizing mid-rounders.

He then covered for this by bringing in 2 corners who play opposite styles from our pro-bowl corner already. Money went to them instead of to, again, fixing a stale linebacking corp which he knew would not be adequate for the wide-9 system he forced on his 1st Year DC.

Reid is good for some things, but has ridicious blinders for others.

I would like to thank my hands for being so great, for allowing me to type this post.

My Grievance is with me

For forty years I’ve lived and breathed Philly green. At 52 years of age, my guts are knotted so badly that my turds come out looking just like Snyder’s Pretzels. My hopes and dreams have risen and fallen on the arms of no less than 35 starting QB’s, from Mike Boryla to Mike Vick, and nearly every conceivable great hope and castoff imaginable. (Did you know Pastorini, Ken O’Brien, Joe Pisarcik, Pat Ryan, Mark Rypien and Jay-friggin-Fielder all had stints with the Birds?)

Over 600 Sundays, not to mention scattered Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, have been wasted devoted to cheering, screaming, and yes, sometimes crying over my beloved Iggles! Christ, I haven’t even lived in the area since 1977, yet I still buy, and eventually shred, hats, jerseys…even fucking Snuggies by the armful!

I’ve tried every ritual imaginable- hat on backwards, hat inside out, two hats at a time, three layers of shirts, banging my wife/girlfriend/random conquest while’s she’s wearing a Cowboy/Giants/Redskins jersey, you name it. Now I just sit isolated and muttering to myself on the coach, while my family leaves for the day, only coming home if the Eagles win, or I give them the “all clear”. They were gone for nearly three weeks after we lost the Fog Bowl.

Like an alcoholic who can’t lick the bottle, or degenerate gambler who can’t pass the OTB window, I’m a hopeless cause. I always tell myself “next year”. It was cute when I was 12, admirable when I was 22, tolerable at 32, and wearing thin ten years ago. Now it’s just plain pitiful.

So as I swear like a lunatic at this here grievance pole, no longer able to muster the will for the “feats of strength”, my only hope is that I can serve as a sad but stirring example. Jump off the bandwagon my friends, before the wheels run over your soul. BTW…think we’ll pull it out tomorrow?

Honestly

no homo, that was very touching. My dad much like yourself has been through the same things you have. It is truly sad when you think about it. All the years coming up short. My mom tells stories of when they were younger living in an apartment. The neighbors on many a Sunday called the police because they thought my dad was beating my mom but in reality he was furious over the Eagles. Me being 27 and not really caring about the Eagles till my teens I only know so much pain, but the pain I feel is just as real. I have a lot of friends who cheer for the winning teams. That’s fake. My dad raised me to love the Eagles and I will love them for better, for worse, till sickness and in health, till death do us part. And yes i think we’ll pull it out tomorrow. Go Birds!!!
