NFL Week 16: Eagles Vs. Cowboys Preview - SB Nation Philly
Philadelphia was all but eliminated from playoff contention just a few weeks ago, sitting at 4-8 in the cellar of the NFC East division, but heading into Week 16 of the 2011 season, the Eagles could have a chance to put themselves in a grand position vs. the rival Cowboys.

Henery happy with Philadelphia
Henery, easily one of the all-time Husker heroes, capped off a record-setting college career at Nebraska and was the fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles. Although the much-mocked "Dream Team" Eagles have not performed to expectations, Henery has lived up to his prospects. The rookie from Nebraska by way of Omaha Burke is 11th in the NFL in accuracy (20 of 23) and he's hit all 40 of his extra point kicks.

say what you want about henery

I wish the eagles never got rid of Akers. does anyone remember that 49ers game. could of won that if henry didn’t miss those 30yd field goals. I don’t think he can drill a 50yarder either. meanwhile Akers is setting records in San Fran (mostly because the 9ers have the worst red zone offense in the league, but still).

Akers missed two field goals that game two…

He’s a kicker, they’re replaceable.

I'm great like Gatsby.

henery misses two field goals → he’s terrible
akers misses two field goals IN THE SAME GAME → he’s the best kicker everzzz

by RogerPodacter on Dec 23, 2011 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

but the 49ers won the game

there is a difference. I never said henery was terrible I just think Akers’ kicks had more power and accuracy.

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

The 49ers won the game because of what the rest of the team did (scoring TDs instead of FGs). The result of the game is irrelevant when evaluating the individual performances of the kickers. The fact that Henery was 3/5 in that game is ridiculous. You get close enough to score, you should not try 5 FGs. You need to punch it in.

Akers refused to sign the transition tag when it was offered to him, so we moved on and got a great kicking prospect who is 20/23 on the year, which is pretty damn good. In fact, he’s ahead of Akers in FG % this year, so go figure.

Also, Henery hit a 47 yard FG this year, showing he does have power. What else shows he has power? Hmmm….

In November 2008, he set a record for Nebraska, kicking a 57 yard field goal to give Nebraska a 33-31 lead over Colorado

You know who is to blame for that game? Ronnie Brown for fumbling on the 3 yard line. The coaching staff for calling the play. The defense for collapsing. The offense for not scoring TDs and instead settling for FGs. And yah, Henery is also to blame, too, but the loss is not all his fault, and Akers didn’t win that game for the 49ers.

by eagleyosh on Dec 23, 2011 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

a field goal could have won the game (period).

San Fran has a good defense when your offense drives down the field and is in a position to put up points your kicker should be able to step up and do so. And I wasn’t sure as to why the eagles got rid of Akers so thank you for rehashing that. either way it is history. I for one am just not going to praise henery… yet.

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

You say the "kicker should step up and do so."

in making a FG. you’re bashing Henery for missing two FG that game, Akers missed two FG as well. Henery has a better % at FG this season, yet your slobbering over Akers still?

The Eagles tried to resign him, Akers LEFT the Eagles not the other way around!

by slandog on Dec 23, 2011 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

It’s not Henery’s fault he hasn’t had 44 attempts. And it’s not like 23 is a super small sample size, either.

by eagleyosh on Dec 23, 2011 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

right, it’s not his fault he wasn’t giving the opportunity for more attempts. all I’m saying is your cannot just base everything off percentages. like a blocked kick still counts as a missed FG. it lowers their percentage even though it might not entirely be the kickers fault.

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

a field goal could have won the game (period).

It changes the entire way the game is played. You can’t just tack on points like nothing would have changed.

Nobody is saying we should praise Henery, but you’re seriously harping on the rookie kicker given the way things have gone this year?

Formerly... "You don't have to be sweet, to be good"

by Ed Van Chimp on Dec 23, 2011 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not really harping

for the most part he had one bad game. but I dont really think he should have earned this much respect. he missed two kicks from a range that is pretty much a give me. we aren’t even sure how far he can kick. I’m just not really a believer yet.

I felt more comfortable with FG when the Akers was on the team. look at the year he is having in San Fran. he is one of the tops.

how can you be so confident in a rookie? this isn’t me hating I just believe that henery isnt the complete success that the article above says he is.

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

He kicked a 57 yard FG in college, outdoors….

That “rookie” is 20-23, he had one bad game in September. Why wouldn’t I be confident in him. David Akers once had a season where he made 75 percent of his kicks and was completely healthy. In 2 of those games the FG’s he missed directly impacted the outcome……

We went 8-8 and missed the playoffs that year. Sound familiar?

Formerly... "You don't have to be sweet, to be good"

by Ed Van Chimp on Dec 23, 2011 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

I know it's beating a dead horse

but Akers also missed 2 in the 21-16 loss to the Packers in last year’s playoffs. If he had made even 1 of those we would have been able to try a game winner instead of throw the killer int at the end.

by waterfield on Dec 23, 2011 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

Akers did miss critical kicks

but I seriously doubt henery can make anything 50yds + and that sucks.

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

Oh I'm glad that you "seriously doubt"

because I’m sure you have a history of being right about all of this stuff.

Waterfield just called you out on Akers missing two FG against the Packers. And you’re still hating on Henery. You need some help kid!

Every kicker misses FG’s now and then. And unless you’re the Cowboys (until this season) you can always find one at your local hardware store.

by slandog on Dec 23, 2011 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

He already has you idiot. He’s made a 57 yard FG.

College. Unless you are arguing that his leg underwent some sort of magical atrophy when he got drafted and now he can’t kick a ball that far anymore.

I guess we really don’t know yet, do we?

by philly green on Dec 24, 2011 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

It is funny

Henery (hitting 60%) was actually twice as accurate in that game than Akers (33%)

by Sparki on Dec 23, 2011 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

hilarious.

your percentages fail to point out that henery lost that game for the eagles. but I’m glad you know how to do math.

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Both kickers missed two field goals. If we switched kickers for that game guess what, we still would have lost the game.

I'm great like Gatsby.

by Clint Eastwood on Dec 23, 2011 10:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

NuhUh

If we had Akers, the defense would have stepped up in the 4th qtr.

by Sparki on Dec 23, 2011 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

But then Henery could have made 1-2 of those that Akers missed

and we’d be in the same place… I like this game of “lets imagine”, but reality is probably where we should live.

by Sparki on Dec 23, 2011 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

Who gives a shit?

There isn’t just one thing that lost that game. They all had a part. Sure, if Henery makes one kick they would’ve won. Or if Ronnie Brown doesn’t fumble, they would’ve won. Or if Maclin doesn’t fumble, they would’ve won. Or if the defense could make a single stop, they would’ve won.

Well, you’re entire post was pointless. He’s hit 87 percent of his FG this year which is very respectable. Your hating on him is beyond retarded.

You're an idiot Philly Green

Why can’t you understand. So many people on here have pointed out how Akers missed two FG that game as well. Switch up the kickers and we still would have lost.

Akers also missed two FG vs. the Packers last season, yet you’re not bashing on him. And it was Akers that left the Eagles cause he wouldn’t sign the tag.

Does Akers have pictures of you? Is that why you’re washing his balls so much here?

by slandog on Dec 23, 2011 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

No I'm not mad

It’s that your ignorant and you don’t even realize it. You’re making yourself look like the idiot here.

I’m fine if you want to do that to yourself. It’s that a few people on here have pointed out situations where Akers has done the exact same thing, yet your still jumping all over Henery who is a rookie. If I recall Akers jumped to a few teams early on because he couldn’t make it anywhere.

Henery is doing fine for a rookie, give the guy a chance and he could be the next Akers or even better….who knows.

by slandog on Dec 23, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

and what the hell do you mean, does Akers have pictures of you? are you saying that he is some kinda head hunter or something?

by philly green on Dec 23, 2011 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Akers missed one field goal and had the other blocked, that doesn’t count.

Good story, feel the team should do something to honor the guy.. the story isn’t going away, just embrace it. Maybe let him in some kind of honor circle club thing in 7 years (50th anniversary of incident).

Did anyone else read the Phi-Dal game preview by Cody Benjamin at SB Nation Philly?

I forced myself to read all 8 paragraphs, knowing, after 3, that nothing good was forthcoming. I wanted to give an Associate Editor of SB Nation the benefit of the doubt.

“Lame” doesn’t begin to describe this writing. If it were a meal it would be without taste and without nutritional value. It would have the texture of bird shit.

An average 8 year old who is interested in pro football could write a more insightful, more clearly expressed article.

Awesome mental picture. It reminds me of how all food tasted to me using after Crest Pro Health mouthwasht…..had no taste for two weeks, had a swollen tongue and gums for 1, and chemical burns (ulcers).
