Which Cowboys RB Will The Eagles Face?

TAMPA, FL - DECEMBER 17: Running back Felix Jones #28 of the Dallas Cowboys runs the ball against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the game at Raymond James Stadium on December 17, 2011 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)

One thing is for sure, the Eagles will not be facing DeMarco Murray, who is out for the year with a broken ankle. First round bust Felix Jones has been filling in for Murray, but he missed practice yesterday with a hamstring injury. It's not known yet whether he's just getting a day off or whether his availability is in doubt. He did not finish last week's game against the Bucs.

Jamar Chaney says that if they do face Jones this weekend, they won't take him lightly

"He's a first round pick so he has a lot of talent. I saw Felix in college a bunch of times at Arkansas and he's a great back. I mean, the thing that's surprising about him is how fast and quick he is. I mean, he has pretty good acceleration and can get to top speed pretty fast. I guess he has a chip on his shoulder because he's not starting anymore, but he's starting now because Murray went down and I guess he has a chip on his shoulder now and wants to prove people wrong."

If Jones can't go, 12 year vet Sammy Morris will likely carry the load for Dallas. He had 53 yards on 12 carries against the Bucs last week after Jones went down. Morris hasn't started a game since 2009 and hasn't really seen significant action since the 2008 season in New England when he rushed for a career high 727 yards.

[Update by JasonB, 12/21/11 1:15 PM EST ] From Imp in the comments. Felix Jones missed practice again today, but the Cowboys say he'll play.

Felix jones sits out practice again. Vice president stephen jones says team is just being cautious and he will play against eagles

Felix Jones.......

Does it seem like majority of the time he plays pretty good against us?

The last thing I want to hear when I'm using a public urinal is someone telling me I have a nice watch.....

When he plays, he’s actually very good in general. He doesn’t have the insane YPC he did his first couple of years, when he was more of a change-of-pace guy, but even now he’s still dangerous.

Wow.

If Jones and Murray are out, the cowboys will have no running game at all. I mean, we’re going win anyway, but without a running game the cowboys are going to get blown out.

I don’t agree with Jason-E. I’d love to see the Eagles blow out Dallas again, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if we see the return of Bad Juan this week and things fall apart.

You guys seem to forget

that the Eagles running D has been gashed by unknown RB’s before.

Also I find it quite amusing how cocky some are after a 2-game winning streak…lol

Not here, man

I’ve accepted the fact that Reid will be back, unfortunately. I don’t see any way he gets fired, unless they bomb these last two games. Hey, it’s certainly been known to happen with this team. If they keep Castillo at D coordinator, however, I will piss blood in an apoplectic fit.

Sammy Morris is not unknown

A journeyman, yes, but not unknown. Most of his career success has come from stepping in for the starter, such as Ricky Williams in MIA and Laurence Maroney in NE. He was effective in NE, but not a star. He has never been a 1000 yard rusher. And he is 34 years old.

Sure, he could go off, but I would rather the Eagles face a 34 year old RB over Felix Jones any day. Yes, the Eagles held Murray to an okay game, but Felix just gives the Eagles fits. I will always be happy facing the less talented player.

man wtf

Did u watch the first fame Murray good game 4 carries for 52 yards and the only reason he stopped at 52 is because we started to blow them out and they started throwing the ball.

That's not how it went

Murray got a bunch of yards running draws later when the defense was playing more prevent. He was a non factor.

I'll take that

Jones has been playing well since regaining the starting job ao he worries me a little bit. It seems like he usually does well against us. If it’s Morris that would be great but I still wouldn’t get too confident. This is a passing team so it won’t affect them as much. I still think we will pull this one out but I think it will he close. Go Birds!!

i didn’t know these overconfident people making overconfident comments were playing on saturday. man they better get humble if they’re gonna do well on the field.

if mccoy and lewis and brown were hurt, and we only had morris practicing, i think btb would ask which eagles rb will the cowboys face.

So what should I post about?

I really don’t think I’m in the being naive here.

When this weekend’s opponent has their top RB miss practice, it’s news. I’m going to write about it. How people choose to take the news is completely their business.

Sick of being cautious and pessimistic

Fuck it, if we go out, I’m going out happy and celebrating, not on the edge of my seat waiting for the Birds to blow it. I’m going to take the confident route for once. No more Negadelphian for me for the rest of the season.

Come Saturday, we’re gonna fuck the Cowboys up. We’re gonna beat em down like we did Game I. And it doesn’t matter if they have Felix Jones are not, cause the Birds are fuckin slobbering at the mouth, they’re hungry, and they can’t wait to go to Texas and punch Tony Romo in the mouth. I can feel it.

Keep Andy!

Yeah, why mope around? If you really think the Birds will blow it, then you’ve got an entire offseason of moping and whining about them. We might as well try to have some fun with the games we’ve got left.

This is freaking Dallas week. This should be fun!

Thank you!

We’re not losing this game. A Ryan defense can’t stop the Eagles. They’ve proven it twice (three times if we count Miami). With no running game, we’ll be able to concentrate fully on Witten and Bryant and get after Romo.

Zombies are real! Jerry Jones and Al Davis are proof! Arm yourselves!

by Jason-E on Dec 21, 2011 1:12 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think the way to approach it...

Is to hope for the best, be positive, understand that we might lose against an at-times very tough opponent, and just sit back and hope the Eagles play well. Even if the Giants win beforehand, which I hope doesn’t happen, so long as the Eagles put forth a good effort, win or lose, I’m going to enjoy this game.

I'm not sure I would call Felix

“a first round bust.”

He might not have lived up to his first round billing yet. But the guy certainly has talent. I will definitely be happy if he can’t go this week. But Morris is no slouch. He showed some burst in his limited time last week.

by Smitty2K3 on Dec 21, 2011 11:53 AM EST reply actions

i would

career highs of 800 rushing yards and 3 TDs….and plenty of injuries. this is his third year and he has not distinguished himself. and in all likelyhood, come next September, he’ll be number 2 on the depth chart. that’s a bust bio if i’ve ever heard one.

A bust to me

is a guy drafted high who is basically out of the league a few years later (see: Jerome McDougle). A 1st round pick who has starting ability is not a bust. Felix had some injuries and also had to deal with splitting reps with Marion Barber. Now in his first year of having that chance to carry the load he didn’t quite get off to the start people expected and then he got injured and Murray out-played him. He’s certainly not some superstar Pro Bowler, but he’s capable of starting on a handful of teams in the league at the very least.

Not trying to hype up a hated rival. I still think he’s overrated by a lot of Cowboys fans. But it’s too early to be calling him a bust imo.

by Smitty2K3 on Dec 21, 2011 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

we have different definitions of bust then

by no means am i saying he has no talent. his YPC certainly shows that he has good field vision, and ability to make people miss. and he seems stronger this year then previous ones. add to that his natural speed, and he has all the makings of a good back. but he hasn’t lived up to his draft status. and they say 3 years is enough to judge a draft pick. this would be his third year.

by wilddre22 on Dec 21, 2011 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

Well I guess our definition of bust is different

Jerome McDougle is a spectacular bust. But you don’t have to be out of the league to be a bust. When you’re a RB taken in the first round and you’re a backup… you’re a bust.

Just like Reggie Bush was a bust in New Orleans. It didn’t mean he wasn’t a useful player in certain roles, but he didn’t come close to the value that was expected of a top pick.

Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook.

by JasonB on Dec 21, 2011 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

We’re basically on the same page with judging his talent level. Just disagree on the bust part of it.

Just curious though, would you consider Broderick Bunkley a bust? Because he was taken high in the first round and was a key starter for the Eagles for 4 or 5 years. He might not have lived up to his draft spot, but he was still a very effective starter. I know you can’t lump Bunk in with Felix because Felix has yet to be “the” starter. But they were (or are) effective in their roles.

by Smitty2K3 on Dec 21, 2011 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

No I wouldn’t call him a bust. He started nearly every game for five years. Agreed that he never lived up to potential, but they got a lot of use out of him as a starter. I guess you count him as an average pick.

Jones couldn’t win a starting job and when he was handed it, he lost it. For a RB taken in the first round, that’s a bust no matter how you slice it. Now maybe he turns it around ala Reggie Bush, but for the Cowboys right now, he hasn’t nearly lived up to expectations.

Positions do matter. You expect production from a RB.

Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook.

by JasonB on Dec 21, 2011 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I see your point

I guess I’m still going off the “flashes” I’ve seen from him. Rather than pure, season-long production. Which is probably a mistake.

Well let’s hope he keeps this lack of production going for a couple more weeks!

by Smitty2K3 on Dec 22, 2011 8:18 AM EST up reply actions

Kinda hard to call him a bust

Even though he was taken in the first round and I know that’s what people look at. The team drafted him to be a second back a change of pace back not a lead back. If the team unwisely used a first round pick doesn’t mean the player is a bust. He is exactly what he was drafted for and has excelled at that position. Definitely not a bust and definitely not a good idea for another teams fan base to call him one without knowledge of why he is where he is or why he was taken where he was.

by Sado44 on Dec 22, 2011 12:11 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

basically your first sentence wraps up why he's a bust

you have to live up to your draft status. plain and simple. and there are plenty of change of pace backs in rounds 2-5 if thats why they drafted him. and y’all also drafted Choice later in that draft, so that sounds to me like your FO was trying to find a starter b/t those two picks. seems like a swing and a miss, and a swing and a foul tip so far.

But

He was drafted to be second on the team not lead back. If you can say he hasn’t proved to be the change of pace back he was drafted for then you might be able to say he is a bust.
