Nate Allen
Theres been a ton of awfulness with the Eagles defense this year dont get me wrong. But nobody to me has been so, so consistently bad as Nate Allen. Every time I look up hes either: forgetting who to cover, knowing who to cover and just plain getting burnt, or missing tackles all over the field. Tonight he actually combined all 3 in one play. Coleman isnt Ed Reid either I know, but atleast he seems to fly around and make tackles (albeit usually after a 10-15 yard gain). I feel like we've gotten some value with Coleman because we drafted him later. Nate Allen was a 2nd round pick.
Heres what really gets me about Nate Allen. I wanted Earl Thomas and when we traded up to 12th I thought that was our guy. But I remember watching him before he got hurt last year and thinking "Alright this guys a pretty solid player, definetly gonna be our starter for awhile". I even thought when our defense really started to suck that his injury was part of the reason why. It seems to me we have a situation like Stewart Bradley: Guy shows promise as a rookie, gets hurt, then apparently recovers but doesn't really seem to be close to the pre-injury version. Mabye just too mentally hesitant.
I guess I want to put the question out there: Am I right that he seems to have transformed from promising to one of the worst safeties in the league? Did he always suck dick and I was just being optimistic when I thought he was good? Or am I being too hard on him this year?

yeah we botched the 2nd rd pick with Nate but at least we made up for that by taking Brandon Graham………..this is fuckin horrible
that's easy to say
now that we’ve seen how they’ve panned out
And the Trail Blazers should have drafted Jordan.

He was overrated
I have always felt and continue to believe that he was overrated by our fan base. People had him penciled in as the Brian Dawkins replacement and he played decently last year. But, he was hardly an Eric Berry last year.
I don’t believe his performance is due to the injury, he’s just making bad plays, bad angles, bad reads, etc.
And he never had elite athleticism. The biggest question mark out of college was that he played in a weak conference, and I’m just not sure he’s actually the player that his draft position suggests.
He can’t tackle, and he can’t cover. There are plenty of tackling safeties with comparable coverage skills. Until we find a suitable replacement, I feel Jaiquan Jarrett should start over Nate Allen.
Kurt Coleman might be poor in coverage, but he at least prevents the big TD plays by tackling a runaway player (what a “safety” is named after, to be there to be the last line of defense). He occasionally makes good plays in the run game.
IMO his biggest flaw is speed, I just don’t think he has the kind of speed needed to cover WRs, we need someone with a 4.4.
Mostly agreed
I just made a post also about Nate Allen titled “Stay or Go?” a couple hours ago and you were reading my mind on this guy. I wouldn’t say that he was over hyped because when you put on the tape of him in college, he made plays and consistently brought it to guys all over. He didn’t really play in a “weak conference”, Pierre Paul played at USF and is a stud, so you can’t really say his conference was weak on that one. Also look at Assante Samuel and his conference at UCF…you want to talk about WEAK? That conference is straight up weak. Also Jarrett’s conference at Temple isn’t any better. But yes I do think that Jarrett should be given a shot to get out there and showcase his talent…even if he sucks the big one, we can’t get any worse.
Agreed
Yea watching him play you dont say “this guys still hobbled by the injury” you say “this guys slow, cant tackle, and doesnt really know what hes doing”…pretty disconcerning…At the same time has Jarrett really been popping out to you as a playmaker? The way I feel right now is we drafted two safeties early and both were huge reaches. Ive lived in Philly on and off the past couple years and nobody was ever talking about Jarrett. Usually if a Temple player is worth drafting that early people will be talking about him or well see him in the Inquirer (ie Wilkerson on the Jets)..I agree with you though it cant hurt to see what Jarrett can do, since were now that were officially out of the playoffs
Agreed
I think Nate was great as a deep cover safety last season, he showed alot of promise, it seems like he’s been playing alot closer to the line of scrimmage this season and has been caught out of position alot. I’m not giving up on him as he is coming off an injury and this is only his 2nd year so he can improve, but definately not liking what I saw this season
Scheme is to blame
I personally know Nate so I am a little partial but IMHO, scheme and the lack of linebackers, coupled with Nate still recovering from the knee are the real problems. Our safeties are being asked to really fill the void of having any decent linebackers by dropping into the box. Both Nate and Curt are biting hard on the play-action. That said, Nate has been burned a few times. It takes a year to get a knee back to 100% and players usually don’t feel good again until year 2 after an injury like that. The knee is making slower bothnin speed and reaction.
Nate will bounce back to his true self by next year. We can’t give up on him already. Hell, if we base it all on this year, we need to bail on just bout everyone with the exception of Lesean McCoy, Trent Cole, Jason Babin, and Jason Peters.
This season is a wash. What we have left should serve really just to help the team gel for next year.
Eagles for life.

Ok if Allen’s knee is whats bothering him then why doesn’t he come out and say something and take himself out of the game? Why would he selfishly stay in there knowing that his knee isn’t 100%? He isn’t that good of a player for us to have risked him playing, on some Ellis Hobbs shit, early on in the season. We could have just put in Jarrett. Sure you can blame the scheme but look at Kurt Coleman, he is making tackles….most of the time….but Nate has just looked lost. I really hope Allen will come back and beast next season because he was flat out bad this season.
Coleman looks better in this system because he is more of a physical in the box safety,so he is being asked to do what he is best at. Allen is more of a coverage safety, and i agree with Leksensei poor Linebacker play in coverage does make Nate look so much worse, I’m not letting him off the hook, but I do believe he is alot better than what we have seen this season
Not a “bothering him” thing. Just not back to 100%. That said, he is still better than anything else we have and that is why he is out there.
As for Coleman making tackles…..let’s qualify hat. He is a HITTER but still can’t use his arms to tackle. As almost no one on this team can do right now.

It seems like Reid is always trying to make something out of nothing
We don’t draft high for LB’s, we pass up a “sure” pick in Thomas and get an undersized End. I think Reid is always trying to show the league he knows what he’s doing. I didn’t want Allen either, but Jarrett seems like a good candidate to replace Dawk, but isn’t given a chance for some reason.
Seventh round starters aren’t going to cut it.
Brian Dawkins for President
I'm not prepared to give up on Allen just yet.
This defense is such a mess that I’m willing to give Allen more time considering that he did look pretty good last year. Other than our defensive line our entire defense is being asked to play out of position and it’s hard to know who really is bad and who just needs to be put in a better position.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
Id say last season that about .01% of the BGN population thought Nate Allen sucked
ive been saying it forever, now everyone finnaly see’s it, he fucking sucks, zero leadership, zero promise, zero awareness, zero ability

Got bad knees and a high motor? Well cmon on over to PHILLY, we'll do our best to put you in the right position and do a better job!
bah
Nate Allen has looked bad but I dont put that all on him. In this POS scheme that Castillo runs Nnamdi looks bad, Asante looks bad, everyone in the secondary looks bad. Its the scheme, not him. Castillo’s a nice guy but he doesnt know WTF he is doing.
He has looked bad this year
but he is a second year player playing under his second DC (and the 2nd bad one at that) I think he deserves a pass.
Cowboys suck.
Nate is better than
Eric Berry and Earl Thomas
Joe Banner is Evil Banners father. Kinda like Luke and Darth Vader.
Juan Castillo switching from the offensive line coach to Defensive coordinator is soooo dumb it might just work.
Our defense will not be a top 10 defense this year.
