Kurt Coleman Does Something No Eagles Safety Has Done Since Brian Dawkins
Kurt Coleman nabbed his fourth pick of the season yesterday, which leads the team. The last time an Eagles safety had four or more picks in a season was when none other than Brian Dawkins did it in 2006.
Of course, Coleman's four picks have all come in two games. His previous three came in week 6 when Rex Grossman.... acted like Rex Grossman. Coleman is also second on the team in tackles with 74.
Coleman was not the only Eagle to equal one of the franchise greats yesterday. Jason Babin & Trent Cole each had three sacks, which was the first time a pair of Eagles had three more sacks in a game since Reggie White & Clyde Simmons did it in 1992 against the Giants.

He has to learn and build off of each week. As a 3rd yr pro next yr, he’s gotta be ready to play consistently solid defense.
If you could only keep one, Coleman or Allen?

He is a strong tackler and he just seems to make plays. I think both will just continue to get better though. At least I hope

Allen’s injury has changed him. Sucks, he had such promise. But Kurt is healthier, more physical, and getting better.
I also attribute Coleman’s early season blown coverages on Juan’s zone schemes. He had a few crucial missed tackles too, that I attribute to Kurt.

Aha. Kurt Coleman sucks balls. Marshawn Lynch was giving him piggyback rides all night. He lacks athletic ability in coverage. And he misses tackles at some of the worst times.
Kurt Coleman is back-up caliber.

He plays as hard and as well as he can. Can’t say the same for Allen.

Allen has had a major knee injury. Many knee injuries take at least one season to fully heal.

I was really excited about Jaiquawn Jarrett during draft day. Kurt Coleman has been a pleasant surprise taking into account his draft position. I really hope he shows up next year ready to be a leader and play football.
Difficulties mastered are opportunities won.
I honestly wonder if Jarret’s ever going to start a game for us barring injuries to other players.

I think Coleman is the best safety on this team right now (and no, I don’t think Jarrett is going to be as good or better) but he’s not the kind of impact player that Dawkins or even Mikell was. To me, he’s a good, versatile starting safety, and would be most effective if the guy playing next to him was a star. You’d think that with two second-rounders, there’d be hope for finding that star, but Nate Allen has looked nothing short of awful this season, and I’m still convinced Jarrett was a major reach who will always be a slightly below-average player. I certainly hope I’m wrong about one of those guys, because you would hate to see the team have to spend yet another pick on the safety position.
Seriously, how many safeties have the Eagles drafted under Reid in recent years? Allen, Coleman, Jarrett, Demps, and Macho Harris? I’m not exactly filled with confidence that the next guy will be a winner, you know?
I really don’t think Coleman’s that good. All of our safeties are back-up quality. Kurt’s gotten lucky on the picks he’s gotten and he does a decent job in run support but doesn’t do much to help pass defense.

but can you blame it all on him, or does the scheme come into play? I think it certainly does. When you have guys like Nnamdi and Asante on the outside, the middle is going to be challenged – frequently. The safeties need to be above avg.

You don't need a whetherman to know (no) which (witch) way (weigh) the wind's blowing.
"Even those invested in the idea that the journey is the destination may feel they've taken a train to nowhere." - Terry Lawson
I think he’s an average safety. Better than Sean Considine or Macho Harris, but he doesn’t wow you the way Dawk or Q would. He has some flaws, but they’re not glaring flaws, and he has some upside but he’ll probably never be in the Pro Bowl. Starting next to Q last year, I thought he was fine. That’s not to say you couldn’t do better, but I’m far more worried about replacing Nate Allen than I am about replacing Coleman. If they had a really good safety holding up one of those spots, with Allen and Jarrett pushing Coleman for the other, I think it would work out well.
It took Q about 5-6 years before he wowed anyone. Let's give these guys a little time before we relegate them to the pits of Hell.
"Even those invested in the idea that the journey is the destination may feel they've taken a train to nowhere." - Terry Lawson
Jarrett will be a very good player if he is used correctly. Man to man on Larry Fitzgerald is not correct use. He is a hitter. Use him in the box.
Let’s not waste his talent the way we did with Michael Lewis.
BTW there are very very few Safeties who play in the NFL and play well.
Did anyone watch the game last night? Not one safety showed himself to be worthy of playing Professional Football.
There might be 5 safeties in the whole league who help their team win on a weekly basis. That’s out of 64+ players.
Coleman is fucking awesome compared to most NFL Safeties. Sad but true.
"Even those invested in the idea that the journey is the destination may feel they've taken a train to nowhere." - Terry Lawson
Dude, there are plenty of good safeties in the NFL. They don’t have to be Ed Reed to be good. TJ Ward, Deshaun Goldston, Earl Thomas, Eric Berry, Daniel Manning, Jim Leonard, Antrel Rolle, LaRon Landry, OJ Atogwe, Patrick Chung, Jarius Byrd, Raheem Moore, and on, and on. If you’d take Coleman over any of those players then you’re nuts.

You listed 12 out of 64 Safeties. OK, so 5 was an exagerration.
I’d take him over Reed and Atogwe because of age, Leonard due to unfortunate injuries.
Goldston,Manning, Moore? I don’t see that much difference. If you say they’re better, they’re better. I don’t see them enough.
Rolle has a very big mouth. He may end up with a better career than Coleman, but I can’t stand him. Period. He blows coverage every single game.
I am also not impressed with Landry, but that’s probably bias. He is physically gifted, no doubt.

Philly14 has a point. When we moved up, every single person thought we were about to take Earl Thomas. Instead we took Graham. This isn’t the same as someone saying we should have taken JPP, since he was a high risk pick that paid off for the Giants. Earl Thomas wasn’t a risk. He was the sure thing that we missed out on.
by Fenton_Hardy on Dec 12, 2011 1:55 PM EST up reply actions
I left the room when the Eagles were about to pick...
thinking I already knew that Earl Thomas was going to be drafted by us, especially after Dawk just signed with Denver. Boy was I in for a surprise when I came back!!!
I get it.
Some fans were disappointed. Earl Thomas looks, at this point, like a better pick at 13 than Allen at 37.
I must point out to you that Thomas was, in fact, a risk. He may have been a lower risk than Graham, though I defy anyone to prove that they knew it at the time, but let’s not rewrite history with whatever we think we now know. There is no such thing as a sure thing in the draft.
Would it have been better to take Thomas instead of Graham? So far, 2 years in, yes.

but he needs to get better. But he is better than allen and two straight drafts drafting a safety in the second round with predictions of drafting another safety early next draft? This is pathetic man. We have nothing to show on defense with these recent drafts.
Good players on defense: T. Cole-got him years ago, Jenkins- Free agent, Babin- Free agent, Patterson-got him years ago, Dixon-Surprise undrafted, Nnamdi-Free agent, Samuel-Free agent
Not so good: Allen, Colemen, Chaney, Matthews, Rolle(questionable)
Basically no defender from the past 4 drafts are starting for the eagles besides the positions that are suspect.

I would like Coleman a lot better as the first guy off the bench. He plays with grit, but he’s not that talented. Valued role player? Yes. Permanent starter? No.
