Eagles Vs Dolphins Takeaways: Jason Babin In Historic Company
The Eagles recorded a season high nine sacks this afternoon. Casey Matthews, Brian Rolle & Phillip Hunt all recorded their first career sacks while Trent Cole and Jason Babin had three a piece. That puts Babin at 15 sacks, which tied him for the NFL lead briefly. However, Jared Allen had three of his own today to reclaim the lead.
Babin's 15 sacks this season are the 7th most ever for the Eagles and the most for the franchise since 2000, when Hugh Douglas also had 15. Only three Eagles have ever posted more than 15 sacks in a season (Reggie White 3X, Clyde Simmons 2X, and Greg Brown).
Kurt Coleman got his team leading 4th interception today. Like his others, it was an overthrown that pass that came pretty much right to him. But that's certainly not a knock. You have to make plays when they are there to be made and Coleman has done that when errant passes have come his way.
Andy Reid has suddenly turned into a master of the challenge flag this year. He won yet another challenge today and has now been successful on 8 of his last 10.

Yet you still have some people who want Babin gone because all he does is sack the QB. What’s wrong with that?

Its a problem when teams run right at him and he can’t stop the run

Well.....when he is lined up in the Wide 9
isn’t it the responsibility of the linebackers to stop the run? Even still, the whole team this year seems unable to stop the run so why stick it to just Babin?

No
It’s still his responsibility to recognize the run and adjust accordingly.

I can understand that
but if you are in the Wide 9 you are being forced away from the holes you leave in the line by the tackles. so in obvious run downs, the D line shouldnt even be in the Wide 9.

Babin doesn't necessarily have to make the tackle on those runs
But it IS his responsibility to “squeeze” or “pinch” down the line of scrimmage to either force the runner to cut upfield earlier and sharper, or bounce him outside. In both cases the linebackers then have a good angle on the ballcarrier.
In the SEA game Babin was just awful on those two Lynch runs, but he’s been doing that all year. He flies waaay upfield, Lynch can bounce it outside right up the alley and when that happens, not many LBs are going to be able to make it to edge in time to make a play.
Our linebackers haven’t played well, but Babin shares equal responsibility with them when it comes to this team’s woes stopping the run. If you notice, 80% of opposing rushing plays off tackle are to Babin’s side, and that’s by design.
But it is hard for Babin to pinch the hole if the tackle steps up in the hole and keeps the end to his outside shoulder. And decent back is going to those wide open holes if the defensive ends cant pinch in on the tackles.

He had a very good game today and for the most part this season has been very effective at rushing the QB.
I just found it very frustrating that he basically quit at times during the Seahawks game and then after the game chastised reporters when asked Lynch’s success pointing to his sack and the 3 sacks the Eagles generated.
Frankly, I’d make him a situational pass rusher and I bet he’d still have double digit sacks.

My thoughts exactly. Turn him into the Vinny Johnson of football.

Ok but who is the left end on running downs?

GRAHAM. Honestly, I’ve seen decent things out of him considering injuries.

Joe Banner is Evil Banners father. Kinda like Luke and Darth Vader.
Juan Castillo switching from the offensive line coach to Defensive coordinator is soooo dumb it might just work.
Our defense will not be a top 10 defense this year.

I was at the game today and some of the hits that weren't even sacks,
were some of the hardest hits I’ve seen in a while. Two of the three personal fouls agains the QB were complete BS btw.
Trevor Laws: "Thank Giants for kicking to (Desean)."
Mike Vick: "Why would they kick to Desean?"
Matt Dodge: "Snap too high!"
NJ Eagle: "Fly Eagles Fly!!!"
Like the sack Cole got robbed of by going low on Moore

yeah, he actually should have had 5.5 sacks today.
Casey Matthews hit gave the entire stadium an “OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH” reaction

He has to be the worst QB to have multiple 4th quarter comebacks.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Can we talk about how utterly disappointing Nnamdi is?
In 5 years, I want De'Anthony Thomas on this football team.
He has been disappointing but I really feel DRC is legit if we can put him in the right position. DRC and nnamdi next year would be a sick combo, gotta trade asante

Not one CB could have covered that first TD
it was a perfect pass/catch. As for all the other times he has gotten beat, I’m pretty sure every one he has been in zone. It’s not his fault that he’s been severely misused and that doesn’t make him disappointing.
It was perfectly placed
Sometimes the camera angles are misleading on the spacing between players. If Nnamdi had been able to, I think he could have jumped and tipped it but he was a step too far behind. If you are too close, you run the risk of a PI penalty. The Eagles went against their formula about 30+ year old free agents with Nnamdi. If his body starts breaking down, this was not a good signing.

I don't know about the coaching, but..
The player-related problems with this team could be fixed with a really top-notch draft.
Babin
Should be just a third down pass rusher or teach him to actually read the lineman in front of him. And for everyone saying it’s the wide 9 that causes him to be horrible against the run, you only have to look at Trent Cole. BTW, what happened to Brandon Graham?
