Casey Matthews Actually Understands Eagles Fans Quite Well

Casey Matthews started a bit of a firestorm yesterday when told Tim McManus that he just doesn't understand Eagles fans.

"No. I don't think anyone will ever understand these fans. When we win they love you but when we lose it gets rough. That's just how it is here. It's like that in some other places, but not to this extent. Hey, just win and keep them happy."

So you're not exactly feeling warm and fuzzy towards Eagles nation...

"Some of them but not running off the field after a loss - not those fans. They think they know me," Matthews said tersely.

Actually Casey, I think you understand us quite well. "Hey, just win and keep them happy." Sounds about right to me.

But of course he continued and his remarks overall seemed to bother a lot of fans. I get why. Criticizing fans is never productive, useful, or generally worth doing at all. The fans aren't the reason the team stinks. So what's the point in involving them?

But I will defend him on one point after the jump.

Star-divide

If you buy a ticket to a game, it entitles you to boo or cheer all you like. If players don't like boos, tough. I believe that is your right. However, I really don't think you have the right to abuse guys as they run off the field. Because if they even dare to defend themselves, the NFL fines them. So it takes a real faux guy to curse at and insult players as they leave the field.

Rex Ryan was fined $75,000 for basically doing what any person would have done in the same situation.

a fan screamed at Ryan as he was

walking towards the locker room:

"Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you."

His response was "Shut the f– up."

Good for Rex I say.

As for Casey Matthews, he did take to twitter later to clarify his comments.

"Setting the record straight, I appreciate the passion and loyalty that ALL Eagle Fans have. I'm just saying it's tough to hear boos at home. And I understand why you guys are all frustrated. We've been in a slump but we will get this thing rolling and give you something to cheer 4. But we need the support from the whole #EaglesNation and finish strong."

Sorry kid. This isn't Oregon. You give us something to cheer for and we'll cheer. And believe me, this our way of supporting you. It's tough love. Just be happy that we care at all. A lot of fanbases wouldn't if a team was this bad.

Too easy...

My initial reaction was to blast the kid but at this point the entire situation and season has become so pathetic that it’s not worth it. Just goes to show you how little leadership this team has. A savvy vet would sit the young kid down and tell him to just to keep quiet. No matter what you say helps anything and in fact, most fans just think you’re poking them with a stick. Just let it go, let it go.

Leadership

Exactly good point DP. This team clearly needs a leader to get everyone together and tell them to shut the hell up. No more complaining to the media about fans booing, no more claiming that they’re gonna blow out anyone on radio or twitter. Just silence.

Also as a player there are much worse things than hearing boos. Its boos that show you that at least the fanbase still cares. When its quiet or you hear more cheers for the away team, like it usually is down in Washington, thats something to worry about.

But whatever, apathy has already started to set in. Keep losing and he won’t have to worry about hearing any boos.

Why is he talking like this is news? This is Philadelphia. The fans have a rep. A rep that is not always deserved, but a rep nonetheless. It’s not a secret. Any athlete walking into Philadelphia should know this. If you can’t handle it, then go somewhere else. Or, WIN GAMES. At the very least, look like you care. It’s not rocket science.

Rex got fined 75K for that? Weak.

Probably but Rex wasn’t the first to get fined for stuff like this & won’t be the last. Goodell doesn’t want the players & coaches to be disrespectful to the fans. Is that fair when they can be disrespectful to the players & coaches no but it’s something they have to deal with I guess

His comments don't bug me one way or the other

But they are another example against the idea of anointing a 4th round rookie as your starting MLB. The kid himself said he was overwhelmed. Bad idea for a team that is all in.

Go Eagles!

He speaks the truth.

If people get butt hurt over it then so be it. It’s not like he said people are assholes for booing. He simply stated the facts. People love you when you win. That’s everywhere, and if you lose they boo you. Yeah it’s not as rough everywhere but it happens.

Might not be seen as, as big a deal if Matthews didn’t play as poorly as he did this year.

Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

That is all.

Sorry kid. This isn’t Oregon

Yep because the Ducks will be winning the Rose Bowl while the Eagles probably won’t make the playoffs

Anyways back to Matthews, I agree with the guys that have said he was put in a tough position, yeah he didn’t play well but the coaches shouldn’t have given him the MIKE job on the first day & let Chaney stay there

by The Legend on Dec 1, 2011 9:54 AM EST reply actions

Agree 100%

The kid was set up for failure from the beginning. All the talking Juan was doing about he’s ready to go, he’s getting better, etc. Juan set up a rookie 4th rounder, with no offseason to fail. You can’t do that as a coach and Juan has to know that.

Juan go the Eagle nation excited about what Casey could do. But when the games started he wasn’t nearly as good as advertised. That is on Juan, I’m sure Casey did his best but you can only ask so much from a 4th rounder with no offseason playing one of the most important positions on defense.

maybe not when Casey was there. But plenty of booing of the Ducks

This. I never really thought of it that way. People always give shit to the Eagles fanbase for being quick to turn on their team. At least there is still passion and not apathy like, say, in Jacksonville. I saw the fan exodus as more of making a point than giving up. Just my impression though.

casey matthews

Never has a player been so hated/scrutinized for really doing nothing. He was a 4th round pick who was just given the starting position. He is a Matthews and everyone bought the hype. Blame the coaches for putting a guy in when he clearly wasn’t ready.

by VRFC8 on Dec 1, 2011 10:26 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Think about what he reads in these posts about him. I feel bad for him ... to an extent.

His bust is blamed on Juan. He put him in as the starter and never looked back, no competition, just said its now or never kid … by the way, here is your playbook. it was unfair of a coach to do that. Andy should have stepped in.
Worst of all, he has not played well at all. From basics to instints, been a poor showing. If the guy was average and could read an offense, he would have not drawn so much heat. And the fact they kept him in there as the starter as long as they did, didnt help any either.

Why are backups running their mouths? Matthews, Laws, who is next? Backup gunner on the Punt team? If you want to be cheered try going better than 1-8 in 9 home games.

I can accept the Eagles losing...

but only if they are genuinely beaten by a better team. I think the boos are loudest when you see a bunch of guys with talent – who get paid handsomely to play a game we love, mind you – not give it their all on the field. We boo stupid calls, stupid mistakes, idiotic displays of bravado that cost us downs and yardage, blown coverages, and especially lack of effort or lack of heart. If you really give it your all every game – we will love you forever. Brian Dawkins knows this firsthand.

I think Casey Matthews was put in a very difficult position at the beginning of the year. The kid just wasn’t ready to be a starting middle linebacker. I think he really tried – but with a new defense and all the other bullshit this crazy rebuilding year – he never had a chance.

by flygirl on Dec 1, 2011 11:44 AM EST reply actions

What freaking alternate universe

do the cheer when you play like garbage?

I think the problem is that guys like Matthews have been cheered his whole life – he’s always been on winning teams and always been one of the best players on that team. What does he know about what it’s like other places? Who would want to play for a team where the fans passively sit and say “chin up, old sport. You gave it your best. Gave it the old college try and all that. Cheerie-oh!”

It's a mindset in college football.

I got into many, many arguments with colleagues about this while I was at FSU working on my graduate degrees. College football is a large party. If your team wins, you cheer. If your teams loses, oh well, you’re young and stupid and drunk. Friends of mine from then didn’t understand why we Eagles fans – all pro football fans, really – boo. And I say, “We will let them know when they’re stinking it up and letting us down.” They would say, “That’s when you need to encourage them!” And that’s when I reply with, “They’re grown men. Do something well, I will cheer. Do something stupid, I will boo. They’re not children.”

It’s college football coddling.

Yeah

..when I was at PSU my friends and I would boo that moron Morelli and others when they made awful mistakes or showed poor effort. Its the Philly fan mentality: don’t praise mediocrity. Then all week in the student paper you’d see laments in the editorials section by students from Pittsburgh/New York/etc. who come form fair-weather sports fan cities and couldn’t IMAGINE that we would boo our own team! Aye yai yai…

The reason these idiots get paid millions to run into each other as fast as they can

is BECAUSE FANS CARE ABOUT WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE!!! It’s like Kim Kardashian now asking for more privacy during this “tough time”.

"...has been timed at 4.39 in the 40-yard dash, and owning a 40.5-inch vertical jump and a 440-pound max bench press, 605-pound squat and a power-clean of 374 pounds." Could you imagine what it would be like to have somone like this on your team???? Oh we do??? His name is Bruce Carter??? Hmmmm....... interesting.

Send em to get a hair cut.

His brother runs around like the barbarian he looks like on the field. Casey, you just look like a little girl and plays like one.

I don’t care if he didn’t have a full pre-season. He was a reach, a mistake, and will never be a starter in this league. Too slow and too dumb.

Aww, sorry eagles players, you don’t like boos at home, stop embarrassing yourselves.

Don't Blame Him

In a sense I don’t blame him, he is partially speaking out of pure frustration. I’m sure he gave his best on trying to learn all the plays, but he was overhwhelmed. People say that they didn’t see the instincts in him that they saw in college becasue he was too busy trying to read the defense and call adjustments than to just react. Castillo is largely at fault becasue he tried to force too much on his rookie middle linebacker with practically no off season. Should have given Chaney the responsibility of calling checks and audibles and just have let Matthews react and play instead of overwhelming him.

Just be happy that we care at all. A lot of fanbases wouldn’t if a team was this bad.

There is a ton of truth in this statement! And it’s why it’s almost impossible to get Eagles season tickets. I’m only 16,000 back in line which is actually way better than most people – but I currently have a 1000 year estimated wait time because on average on 15 seats get turned over a year.

It’d be interesting to see what would happen 1998 happened for about 3 years in a row… but i’m still not sure it would change much.

There is not a more loyal fanbase in American sports. Period.

Makes me wonder

what the original plan was with the LB’s. I sure hope something fell through with drafting someone / getting a FA. I have a hard time imagining that the coaches actually felt comfortable going into this season with those guys. We can question what they do, but they aren’t dumb. I don’t remember hearing anything, but did anyone else ever hear any talk about someone that we were targetting but didn’t get?

About another team's fan base...

I live in Cincinnati. I started cheering for the Eagles in the mid-80s (ironically, when the Bengals were Super Bowl contenders) mainly b/c of the hirng of Buddy Ryan, the play of some of the greatest defenses ever assembled and the always elusive Randall Cunningham… AND the fact the Eagles had a die-hard, working class fan base. At the time, all the Cincy locals loved the Bengals – and you could tell it was the “flash-in-a-pan” variety. It was all anyone talked about (even in a baseball city, where the Reds will always be king). But then the 90s came and apathy set in.

Today, the Bengals have a pretty good team. Damn good defense. They are competting for a playoff spot. And yet, the only home game to sell out this year was vs the Steelers. So the fans don’t even get to watch their good team on local TV. That’s a crappy fan base. Passionate fans who spend good money to watch a team lose… they deserve to boo until their hearts’ content. God bless Eagle Nation.

All Philly fans care about is hard work. Superficially it does not appear this team puts that in. The Eagles need more “grinders” (to make a hockey analogy) and less diva-attitudes.

If you bust your ass each game, we won’t have an issue—even if you lose. But on the whole this team reeks of incompetence and dysfunction, and I think that’s why most fans are so disillusioned.

Still, dp said it best, locker-room leaders would tell the players to shut their damn mouths about the fans (and everything else) and just go play games. I’m sorry Avant was the one to start it all a few weeks ago. That didn’t show great judgment.

The only reason I don't blame Casey

Is because he was put into a position he never should have been in in the first place (sounds familiar). The coaching staff gave him pseudo-hope by backing him up when he had no competition and had never even made his first tackle at practice even.

Just shows how much our defense has declined since the death of JJ because only Juan person is stupid enough to put him in that position.
