Even though we are getting back into the race with playoff hopes, I feel that it doesn't hurt to look ahead especially since there have been quite a few posts about the off-season moves the Eagles will make. I decided to make a post about which players should stay and which players should go, obviously only talking about the controversial players. So this post will be about Jamar Chaney, do you think he should stay or go? I'm not necessarily talking about whether or not he should be cut, rather if he should stay in the starting line up or be removed.
Personally I think Chaney is a good player with room to grow. He had a breakout performance last year where everyone expected him to come in and be the next Ray Lewis this year but clearly that hasn't happened, but he has played well. Last year you saw Chaney perform well towards the tail end of the season as the starter at the MLB position and there were of course high expectations this year. Let's not forget that Juan Castillo wanted to have his own Matthews in at the MLB position so he took that role away from Chaney in high hopes that Matthews would be just like his brother. So Chaney didn't get to be that force in the middle for the first 3 games of the season. Not saying that made a HUGE difference but he had to pull out of the leadership role that he had submerged himself into and hand it over to Matthews until he did get that spot back.
Overall I think he should stay as the MLB and give him another season to show what he's got. The starters on D have a lot of respect for him calling the plays, getting guys under control in the huddle and going out and making plays. I think the Eagles should draft a stud outside LB or two for good measure and let them compete for a starting role in the line up next year. I think, YES I'M SERIOUS, that Casey Matthews will challenge Chaney for the starting role and if not will challenge for another position somewhere. I think they tried to give the kid too much to handle for his rookie season....If it matters Ray Lewis only has 68 tackles this season (in part because he missed 1 game so far but Chaney is only 2 tackles off from being tied with Lewis. What do you think?
