Andy Reid On Danny Watkins First NFL Start
The big (sort of) news this week is that the Eagles will finally debut their first round pick Danny Watkins. Kyle DeVan appears to have been benched, so after a shortened and rough preseason, Danny Watkins hopefully takes the place he'll anchor for the next six years or more at right guard. Reid was asked whether the move to Watkins was because he's bigger, stronger and more physical than DeVan.
"I wouldn't say that, no. I'd just say that we're always trying to get the best guys on the field that we possibly can. It really has nothing to do with what the other guys have done, their size or anything like that."
Raise your hand if you believe that. Anyone? I thought so. Andy was also asked what led to Watkins early struggles in the preseason?
"There were three things I mentioned to you: he moved right from college to the NFL, that's tough. He moved from tackle to guard, that's tough. He moved from the left side to the right side, and that's tough. We took a step back to hopefully take a step forward, and that was the approach. He's worked very hard for the chance to get in there, and he'll get a shot this week."
It really is hard to argue with Andy on this point. This was a guy making a position change and learning a new technigque with no offseason. The fact that he struggled in what? Three or four quarters over the course of four preseason games doesn't mean the guy can't play. He's now had an extra month of learning and work to try to make up for all that lost time.
We should remember that there was a reason that he was the highest rated guard prospect in the draft. There's no doubt he struggled with the mental aspects of the new scheme and position in preseason, but all rookies do. Physically though, there's really never been questions about Watkins. This is a big, tough kid who's not likely to get pancaked on a goal line play like Kyle DeVan was. I'm excited to see him out there.

I can only hope for the best. I was against the pick and have to say that the benching made me extremely skeptical…much more than his preseason struggles did. I just wonder why in the world they didn’t at least dress him. If the first round draft pick that you have made an investment in is not good enough to start right away, that is understandable, especially with the things noted in the story. But the fact that they didn’t even dress him cast him in a negative light…and the worst thing that you can do with fans of our team is start someone off on a bad note.
Why do people always think I'm playing the Race Card???

Can you imagine what happens if he excels?
The Eagles offense currently ranks 4th in yards per game, even though their pass protection ranks only 19th. If their pass protection improves (which involves more than just the linemen), this offense could be scary.
This offense already is scary.
Real fucking scary.

Umm, No,
I can’t imagine if he excels because he is a FIRST ROUND PICK HE WAS SELECTED WITH THE THOUGHT OF HIM EXCELLING IN MIND...But you know man, no pressure.
ok, the giants suck.
by BigBlueIntervention on Oct 4th
this is going to sound silly to some because he was projected as a 1st round pick and the best guard prospect in this draft but i cant help but think that part of the reason andy selected him was his back story of being a fireman and all that the same way we picked matthew because hes clays brother or greg Lloyd because his father was great.1/3 of the time we make picks it seems we make them because there a diamond in the rough that may be good, another third of the time we make picks because they remind us of a player we once had in some way, and the other third of the time we pick them because of their back story

Kind of an off-topic question
between Nnamdi and LeSean, who’s jersey should I get? Whatever I get would probably be kelly green, maybe white if I went with Nnamdi. I’m just afraid soon everyone will have Mccoy jerseys. What do you guys think?

As frustrating
as his routine is, I don’t really think he can should come out and do anything else.
He puts the blame on himself as opposed to throwing players under the bus, with a rare exception every now and then as we saw with him singling out the rookie kicker, as a benefit to the players (and probably out of respect for them as well), not necessarily as a way to get under the media and the fan’s skin. I know it seems like he thinks we are too stupid to know the truth, or at least very close to it, but I don’t think that is on purpose, rather a byproduct of his protecting the players.
If I were a player, and I think if you were a player, wouldn’t we much rather have a coach who had our back in press conferences and such than a guy who blasts us in the papers and on ESPN? Now, behind closed doors, I can almost guarantee that he has no problem calling guys out when they are underperforming or flat out making mistakes, but he keeps that in house.

Kind of surprised
That this happened before the bye but not surprised that DeVan got benched. He hasn’t played well and was terrible last week.
At least in this case he’s doing it to not basically embarrass DeVan. We all pretty know exactly why this is happening. I’m ok with this kind of fibbing.

He has experience starting in the NFL at G AND he has experience in Mudd’s system. Big difference.

No one is blaming the o-line for the losses. They’re just making a move to try to improve. This has nothing to do with what you’re talking about.
The Jruth shall be told.
He probably also blames Watkins’ development on the wide 9.
Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook. Did you get your copy of the 2011 Eagles Annual yet?
You’re right. Casey Matthews is actually awesome. If it wasn’t for the wide nine, he’d be just like his brother.
And the wide 9 makes it really to tackle to. You see, when the DE is lined up three feet over, running backs actually become slipperier and and when you get your hands on them, it’s harder to bring them down. Clearly, if we didn’t run the wide 9, our LBs would be bringing down these RBs that they get their hands on.
And Jason Babin? He’d be shutting down the run on every play. Because through his career, he’s been mostly a run stopper… at least until that damned wide 9 messed him up.
Clearly, the fact that trent cole was lined up wider than normal is what prevented Kurt Coleman from tackling Victor Cruz and stopped Nnamdi from knocking away that ball in the end zone. Tony Gonzalez doesn’t make that catch in the end zone in week two if it wasn’t for the DE being lined up wide. I mean, if we ran a good scheme like last year, Trent Cole probably would have been covering Gonzo instead of rushing the passer from a slightly wider position! Clearly that would have worked.
/sarcasm
It’s personnel, it’s always been personnel. I don’t even care what the scheme is, the personnel isn’t making plays. Your ability to tackle shouldn’t be affected by what scheme you’re in.
Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook. Did you get your copy of the 2011 Eagles Annual yet?

Personnel and scheme are interrelated though….If you dont have the right personel to run the scheme, then you change the personel or change the scheme. I know that some of the plays you are thinking of were bad plays because of bad tackling. But what about when your strong safety keeps hitting the run gap late, which results in him either missing a tackle or just plain missing him? What happens when your LB isnt quick enough or doesnt react quickly enough or can’t get off his block to cover a bigger than usual gap?
These things are interrelated…..

If your LB “isnt quick enough or doesnt react quickly enough or can’t get off his block” your problems start long before you’ve installed a scheme. Which is my whole point.
Get rid of the wide 9 for all I care. I don’t care if we’re running the wide 9 or not. The players aren’t good enough period. I refuse to accept the excuse being made for them that’s all the fault of the defensive end lining up a few feet over.
When “your strong safety keeps hitting the run gap late” that’s a problem with your strong safety.
Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook. Did you get your copy of the 2011 Eagles Annual yet?
I know that Jason. And im not blaming the Wide 9. But obviously we cant or wont change our players right now. So what is left to do? We need to adjust the system to cater to our shitty players. Why not close the gaps on running downs? Why not make it easier for our shitty players to make plays?

I suppose my point is, not I’m not sure how it does make it easier? If you can’t get off a block what difference does it make? If you aren’t recognizing what is happening, what does it matter?

I think its one of those things
where you know the system is a good system but the players are still learning the system. If you truly believe something will work and work very well, then you keep practicing and practicing and pracitcing it till you perfect it. Not to be the eternal optimist here, but what if struggling for the first half of the year with the wide 9 turns into 5 years of dominating defense. I know Jason’s point is its the players (which I do agree with) but it could be the players still learning a new system. I know right now, if you told me right now….ok, your defense will look like trash for the first 8 games but then the players will learn it, beleive in it and become experts in it and your defense will be top 5 for the next 5 years, that EVERYONE here would take that in a heart beat

Which they, or the LBs before them could not do without blitzing ( sometimes even then they didn't get there ).
I will take Washburn and his system, and his proven ability to teach it to these players we have right now. The other 7 have been horrible. I think it is stupid to cater anything you do in life to accommodate the weakest part. You don’t change something good to make it match something bad. That’s kindergarten bullshit.
Fuck those linebackers and safeties if they can’t play. Beat on them in practice until they either fight back or quit.

But with that said something needs to happen with the safeties. Who is our strong safety? Neither is diagnosing the run well, or tackling well. On that long Gore run Page was still 20 yards down field when a hobbled Gore shook him out of his shoes. He also made the same tackling fck up that got Coleman benched. Allen was useless in coverage and against the run. On the Morgan TD he and Asante both just froze. I tracked the game through the open thread and hoped guys were over reacting. It was worse than i thought. We’re in trouble guys…
