Injuries Pile Up As Antonio Dixon, Trent Cole & Jason Peters All Out Indefinitely

As if the way the Eagles have played wasn't bad enough, here's some bad news to heap on the pile. Andy Reid announced today that DT Antonio Dixon, the teams best inside run stopper, is done for the year a torn triceps. He also said that Trent Cole has a "fairly significantly" strained calf and is out "indefinitely."

Jason Peters suffered what Andy again termed a 'significant" hamstring injury on the Eagles last offensive play and there is also no timetable for his return.

So, just like it's two Pro Bowlers gone for how knows how long and a key piece on the defensive line lost for the year. Trent Cole's loss may be mitigated somewhat by the likely return of Darryl Tapp, but obviously that's a pretty significant tradeoff as Cole is likely the Eagles best defensive player. As for Dixon, the Eagles are going to have to sign someone. Cedric Thornton is on the practice squad and Derek Landri, who played well in preseason is still out there as well.

As for left tackle, it appears as though it could be King Dunlap time. The only other option would probably be to slide Herremans over to the left and out either Dunlap or Winston Justice in at RT. Although with Vick being a lefty, you'd want your best guy on the right side and among those options, that guy would certainly be Todd Herremans.

Correction...

the best D-Coordinator in football today outside of Dick Lebeau, who is one of the greatest defensive minds of all time. They also have a coach for every position on the field. They have like a 1:1 coordinator to player ratio. I’m pretty sure Kevin Greene is Clay Matthews’ position coach.

You guys aren't the only ones who don't value LB's

We got two rookie 6th rounders playing Mike right now. All I am saying is the Eagles always start out slow. Yeah they need to fix some things but I am not dancing on their grave yet, I think you guys over estimated how long it would take for a team with that many FA’s to jell. A win against the Bill’s is all you guys need at this point, because the Eagles are still a very dangerous team.

you are right about those guys

but they don’t call the plays on Sunday. I had as much faith as much faith as anyone that Castillo would turn out to be a good coordinator but so far it’s not working. I mean look at the Packers who brought in Dom Capers as their coordinator and then look at us who promoted an OFFENSIVE LINE COACH to the run our DEFENSE. I’m just saying that the experiment hasn’t worked and either it starts working soon or some changes need to be made. I’m a glass is half full kinda guy but this is getting embarrasing and I’m not cool with it.

also while we are on that subject

they did bring in Jim Washburn to coach the d-line but did not invest in good lb’s that are required to help suport the wide-9 technique. They brought in Mudd who turned our o-line into a bunch of trim athletic lineman who can’t push a pile to get one yard needed to score from the freaking one yard line 3 times in a row!!! Now we have gotten away from what has worked for us for so long and trying this new shit and we are worse than ever. Great moves indeed

of course you'd trade past winning seasons...

you already had them. Would you trade 13 future seasons for 1 SB. If I told you that you could win the SB this year but the eagles would be 5-11 for the following 13 seasons afterwords… does that change anything?

by Matt dubs on Oct 3, 2011 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

yes i would being 5-11 or 16-0 doesnt matter to me unless we win the super bowl. You play the game to win the super bowl. If you had a crystal ball that told me we weren’t going to win the super bowl this year then i’d rather go 0-16 so we at least get the number one pick. Sorry about the injury news fellas

Just out of curiosity, sice Vick is left handed wouldnt it be better to leave Herreman’s at RT to protect his blindside?

by Giants56 on Oct 3, 2011 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

I brought that up in the off season, and most people seemed to think it wasn’t a valid idea.

by philiafan14364 on Oct 3, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

there is a couple things to consider

1) the skill set is a little different… in a typical offense the RT is more of a mauler, run blocking guy, and not as quick of the line. Not sure what Peter’s skill set is and how this fits.

2) Even though the right side is vick’s blind side, teams tend to blitz him from the left to make him roll right, where he can’t throw the ball. The left side of this line probably sees more pressure than the right… although a clean rush allowed to the qb from the right will result in a fumble.

by Matt dubs on Oct 3, 2011 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too. Still can't understand that thinking.

If he had only played LT i’d understand, but the guy has played all over. TE in college. ST his rookie year then RT, why not put your best OL asset protecting Vick’s blind side? Andy knows best, eh?

I’m saying we get rid of him and play man with DRC and NA! We still have J Hanson who is very serviceable in the slot . We need to sure up the LBs so why not trade Asante for one and a pick ? O and might I add…. cut Juan Castillo!

Why trade Asante this season?

One linebacker isn’t going to turn our season around. Asante will be worth way more in the offseason, when he’s less of a desperation trade.

Keep him for value, build for the future, roll with the guys we’ve got. “All-in” worked SO WELL this offseason, I don’t think I want any more “all in” moves.

You don’t fire Reid after 4 weeks. That would be crazy, self-defeating, and self-fulfilling to a sh$t season.

Don’t understand why people think that Reid will be here if the team goes say 7-9 or 8-8 and they miss the playoffs. Even if they make the playoffs as a wildcard, if they don’t win at least a game or two I think he is gone. 3 straight years the Eagles will have been 1 and done in the playoffs.

Depends but the Eagles invested too much this year not to at least 1-2 playoff games. If they miss the playoffs, Reid is definitely gone. Even if they make the playoffs, if they don’t win a game I also think he is gone. It would jut be a disappointing year given how much the Eagles invested.

I know you are a Giants’ fan but you really think the Giants are good enough to win 11-12 games this year?

Have a nice schedule over the next month but the 2nd half is tough.

@ NE, @ NO, GB, @ NYJ – Looks like a 1-3 to me for the Giants.

2 vs. DAL, @ PHL, WSH, – Looks like a 2-2 split there.

That’s 6 losses. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants won 9 games this year. Question is that enough to get into the playoffs.

Boys are 2-2, Skin are 3-1. You think either of those teams will finish more than 10-6?

by MG77 on Oct 3, 2011 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Well – Dallas should be 1-3 (Harbaugh gave them that game)
Giants should be 2-2 (Should have lost to ARI but the retarded rule/interpretation gave them the game)
Redskins are the Redskins and Grossman isn’t going to take a team through any type of playoff run
Eagles should be 3-1 but can’t hold a lead in the 4th quarter b/c they have 0 run defense and the LB core sucks dick, plus the coordinator’s schemes are awful

Really guys did you think we were going to win a bowl with Reid????

I am a diehard Eagles fan and have been for ever..After we lost to Dallas in the playoffs badly 2yrs ago the same way we lost to them the week before I was totally done with Reid !!! That told me what I thought all along…..Reid can not out coach a better team or even a decent coach !!! He was a QB coach in GB and that’s all he is good at after 12yrs plus!!! Horrible drafting starting with FedEx over Chad Johnson whom we all thght we would get to B.Graham over E.Thomas or Pouncey or JJP ..to last yrs draft…He is killing us that’s why we had to get all these FA because of horrible constant drafting…Tired of midget Mr.Softy D players this clown drafts…Remember his smug a@@ said “JJP who?” when a reporter asked him about him after the draft !!!! Once again the Gmen proved the are way better at drafting and now Washington n Dallas have finally gotten better too while we are getting sickly bad !!! Who u guys rather have been 10-6 or 11-5or what ever n get out coached AGAIN in the playoffs against good teams n coaches? Then set us bad more with another Wizard of Oz Munchkin draft ? Im happy because if Reid dosn’t go now we would never win a bowl…We have a way better chance with a new stud coord or anyone with a clue on how to draft (size) and score from 6inches out !!! Also letting BDawk with out paying him for his years of greatness n dedication crushed me n the Defense obviously !!!! SHOULD HAVE PAID HIM !!!!!! How do u let Q.Mikell go for this garbage at safety ????

Reid will NOT win a SB with the Eagles. Fact. No more looking @ the game through green lenses. We’ll make a run after the bye, but no championship. And its a shame; as bad as we play, teams are barely beating us. The most dangerous roster in the NFL, and we are 1-3.

Don't know about that run after the bye either....

Yes we usually do but that was with BDawk n Q.Mikell and a few other leaders still here..Vick is the only leader and he’s n offense..The wide 9 combined with our LBs n safeties plus Juan smdh makes me think 7-9…..so be it !!!! Sometimes u have to take a step back to take a step forward !!!

NOW is when this team is pushed to the brink. This is when the Philly toughness comes to light. Now we get to see which direction this team goes. Are they going to wilt and let it all go? Or they going to come together and fight? Now things get really interesting. Can’t stop believing.

I saw two months ago the majority of the fan base came to the aid of giants fans when they were getting hit with injuries and trying to be good sportsmans about it. We had they dream team and they didn’t rub it in the giants face, they just stayed civil. Now to see the Giants fans come over here and act like this and the way they treated Steve Smith when he left New York, im kind of shocked how classy eagles fans have been and how classless the giants are being right now…

on a side note, im not one of the classy eagles fans however the majority of eagles posters on this site treated you giants fans pretty damn good this offseason when the giants were on their back
