Positivity Post: Name your top 5 current Eagles

Alright everyone.  I am sure bye week boredom is setting in for all of us simultaneously.  Missing the anticipation of an Eagles game this weekend is really just completely throwing off my week.  With the loads of negativity we have seen on BGN this season, I thought it would be fun to get some positive vibes going.  Yeah we have problems, yeah there are a ton of questions, but what do we have that you are currently thankful for?  Who are your favorite Eagles?  This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with production, it can be whatever makes you root for a player.  I'll go first, but my goal in all of this is to try to identify BGN's favorite Eagle.  So in the comments section list your top 5 with a short explanation, and don't forget to take the poll.  Also, feel free to add in some 'honorable mentions', I know there are a lot of fringe favorites on this roster.

My top 5 after the jump.

Star-divide

  1. Jason Avant - I just love this guy.  Yeah, yeah, he had his worst game ever a few weeks ago from a non-statistical standpoint, but he gets a pass from me.  Jason Avant represents everything I look for in a football player.  Toughness, fundamentals, football intelligence, and a completely non-glamorous role on the team.  I think he is the ultimate "Philly Guy".  He is our definite clutch catch guy and let us not forget when he sacrificed his body on that Miracle at the Meadowlands 2 return only to be concussed.  It will be hard to watch this guy eventually leave the team.  I was thrilled when Joe Banner (or was it Lurie?) deemed Avant and Mike Patterson the heart of the Philadelphia Eagles.
  2. Jeremy Maclin - I will be the first to admit that I hated this pick when we drafted him.  I wanted Knowshon Moreno (believe me, I understand that this is why I am not an NFL GM, and I realize he was already gone).  But Maclin has quickly become a favorite of mine.  The guy simply produces and appears to have zero ego.  He has definitely surpassed DeSean in terms of how valuable he is to this team, although the duo is where the real value is.  I don't have much else to say but simply that I like this kid.  My kind of player . . . a Barry Sanders of WR's in an age of showboating . . . {clears throat and looks at DeSean}.  His trials this summer really helped show his high character, and I actually LIKED his outburst at the reporters a few weeks ago, nothing wrong with showing a little passion.
  3. Todd Herremans - For the first time in as long as I can remember, we have a potential MVP at OL.  This guy has done everything asked of him this year, and not only that, but he has dominated along the way.  I really don't know where we would be right now without the Toddfather saving our ass every week.
  4. Trent Cole - High motor guy indeed.  When Trent is healthy, is there anyone more dominating on the field?  Can't wait to get him back after the bye (hopefully).
  5. LeSean McCoy - I have been a huge fan since he got here, but I am just amazed at his progress and the fact that he is constantly getting better and better.  He seems to have taken on Brian Westbrook's work ethic, and worked on all aspects of his fitness and his game.  LeSean is another guy that simply gets it done out there week in and week out.  I don't even think he has reached his ceiling yet.
Honorable Mention:  Mike Vick (quickly becoming my favorite QB of all time with his game changing ability), Colt Anderson (every team needs a special teams guy like this), Nate Allen/Kurt Coleman (when they are on, I love this defense), Mike Patterson (after this summer, I have mad respect for Mike).
Alright, your turn.

he sucks .. he has not done shit since cole went down .. he is only good in wide 9 cuz the oppisite end was coming free ., he has done shit in three weeks .. and will finiish around 12 sacks .. which isnt imprssive since he had 7 in 4 games

HAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHA! Damn Jibta… thank you. I needed a good laugh.

This is why you need to not talk football with the big boys and continue being a mascot. Do you ever hear people talking stats with the Phanatic? No. There’s a reason for it.

MAYBE you can argue he hasn’t been amazing in last TWO weeks… three weeks ago he had 3, 3 sacks AND a forced fumble against the 49ers. So you’re wrong in that assumption. Also, since when did anyone “suck” if they finish the year with 12 sacks? That is why we got him. He got 12 sacks last year and is on pace to crush that. If he gets a sack every single week (which you apparently demand) then he’d have to finish the season with at least 16 sacks or else he’ll “suck”.

Ugh, why do I do this to myself? I need to get better at ignoring you.

moron

the same guy who was a first round bust and ran outta houston .. the same guy who couldnt get on the field when we had him before .. he had one good year .. he takes advantage of the wide 9 .. he cant stop the run .. hes one demisional .. and parker is a better ALL AROUND END.. and he has done NOTHING with out cole taking double teams up .. so yea .. why dont u go talk on the phantantic you fake homer fan .. you probably think jamar chaney and todd herremans should be all pro too .. what a joke you are

by JIBTA on Oct 22, 2011 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it too much to ask to get your facts right?

Is that too much? Is that hard, cupcake?

Herremans is a beast. He and Peters are the two bright spots on the o-line so there’s no question about him. Not many o-linemen can switch around like he does and stay effective. You just don’t like him because he’s white- and I’m being dead serious. Babin isn’t the problem we have with run defense- not even close. And if by “takes advantage of the wide 9” you mean it perfectly fits his style of play, then yes, I agree. He does.

Here, let me put in terms you understand-

jibta ignores facts… he sucks… he is a moron… he’s just a mascot…. his arguments are all the same… even when he’s clearly wrong…. he will never admit it… cuz his head is hollow…. so yea… YOU DON’T KNOW FOOTBALL… but…. fuk you…. you will still ignore facts AND common sense…. you probably think that Mickel Vick is fast and has a strong arm… what a walking punch line you are…

How’d I do?

ok smart ass

where are ur facts than .. why was babin run outta two organizations .. and barley played special teams when we had him before .. he had ONE good year and then cashed in .. hes nothing special .. he cant play the run .. and he cant rush the passer with out cole oppisite him taking up double teams .. so where are ur facts .. why was he a bust for a top 15 pick? yea smart ass .. where are ur stats now …

herremans has been average at best .. hes an ok guard .. hes not a good tackle .. hes been shaky .. justice is clearly a more natural tackle .. i dont want him benched .. i hate the guy .. but i would move him back to guard .. hes better than mathis ..

1. DeSean Jackson – definition of swag.
2. Nnamdi – great guy, shutdown corner, awesome haircut.
3. Shady – turns negative runs into first downs regularly.
4. Vick – 4.3 speed, cannon arm, looks badass when he wears the visor.
5. Maclin – so happy the Raiders dumb asses took Heyward-Bey so Mac fell to us.

JIBTAS top 5

Brian the monster rolle .. our best lb hands down .. if he was three inches taller he would be an all pro lb ..

jeremy maclin .. our best wr .. its not even close .. i been calling djax sananta moss for two years and he still is .. hes one diminesional .. and eagles fans will never admit it

Peters .. our best olineman .. its not even close again .. he is soo much better than herremans its a joke that ppl worship such an average player when u have an all pro book end

Shady .. ok i admit hes really fucking good .. way better than i thought he would be .. he learned how to run between the tackles .. i was wrong .. he is a legit all pro rb .. he is the best back ive seen here since ricky waters .. yes he is better than westbrook.. westbrook who had one good year yet was worshiped like a god

Riley cooper .. my man .. he would be a beast if the eagles let the man loose .. size speed .. and hes milk chocolate .. he may be white but he dont play like it .. hes tall fast and should supplant avant soon

Mine

1. LeSean Mccoy- It’s just so much fun to watch this guy play. Quickly becoming a top running back
2. Kurt Coleman- Weird choice, but I love how he plays with so much emotion. Being a late round pick with little expectations, he has secured a starting position. I definitely see him being a future leader on defense.
3. DeSean Jackson- Can really get on my nerve sometimes with a lack of effort, contract disputes, and drops, but at times he’s the most fun player to watch on the team. Seeing him burn by Laron Landry and stare him down might have been my most favorite play last year.
4. Michael Vick- Dude takes such a pounding week in and week out. It seems like the past four weeks he’s been limping around and plays through it. I’d say the most talented player of the past decade.
5. Nnamdi Asomugha- He seems like such an awesome/good guy. Took less money than he could have and came to Philly. Has been misused, but is still doing really good and is one of the best at his positions.
Because I couldn’t stop at 5…
6. Jeremy Maclin- Great player, good attitude
7. Trent Cole- An absolute beast on the line. Not to mention his celebration is my favorite celebration
8. Jason babin- Also a beast, insane hustle and he plays with so much emotional.

1. Vick – Dude changes games
2. Shady – Easily becoming one of the best backs
3. Maclin – Best receiver we got
4. Cole – Love me some big time sacks
5. Jackson – Every time he touches the ball in space….it can go for 6 easy

It's not going to happen.

Herremans is playing well at RT, better than Justice played there Sunday… And Evan Mathis has been playing as well as Herremans was at LG anyway.

he's been good!

and he’s still adjusting! cut the guy some slack he’s been shifted all over the line this season, the fact that he hasn’t been a liability at all says a lot!

by smeagle on Oct 21, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say my top 5, not completely based upon production would have to be: (Not in any particular order actually)

1. Todd Herremans- He’s had ups and downs, but anybody who can go from LG to RT and produce on an above average level is a very good football player, then add to the fact he went from RT to LT last week and had a tremendous game and you see Herremans is a very gifted Football player and one we’re very lucky to have. (Saying this saddens me because I realize the Real JIBTA’s gone)

2. LeSean McCoy- The man might be the best RB in the NFL. AP is very good, MJD is good, Turners good, but McCoy has surpassed all but Peterson and that might even happen soon.

3. Evan Mathis- 2nd ranked LG in the NFL. While some people don’t think it means much because he doesn’t have the pretty blocks etc, I do watch the offensive line and he’s played as well (probably better) than Herremans was last season at LG, which is a huge boost moving forward.

4. Nate Allen- While everybody will look to Kurts 3 INT’s against the Redskins as the defining moment for our Secondaries turnaround, the real moment was actually the game against the Bill where Nate was absolutely all over the place and making great play after great play… I think Nate actually spurred some kinda crazy turnaround for this entire defense with the way he played during that game.

5. Juan Castillo- I’m about to make some enemies here, but please hear me out… First 4 games were horrible, the first half of the Bills game was mostly bad, but since that halftime Castillo’s had a stout defense in both aspects of the game, he’s somehow figured out how to make this wide 9 work and how to cover for the LB’s inabilities at the same time… And while he was shooting himself in the foot with all the fancy-ass Nnamdi in zoneness and having crazy zone coverage plays, he realized rather quickly that that wasn’t going to work and that he needs to use his players to their strengths and since then he’s been doing so and with great effect.

(Castillo cont’d) Now I’m not saying the man is a great DC, I’m not even saying he’s good. But I have to admit that there’s potential solely because he’s willing to swallow his pride and admit he’s wrong then fix the problem.. Now in order to keep his job he needs his D to play at and average to above average level while showing signs of improving every single week, but I honestly think the guy has it in him to succeed.

Not really I’m just saying if we had decent LBs or 1 really good LB we’d have the potential to be very good.

My current top players have to be:

(1) Shady McCoy – not only is he a great runner. You can count on him to ice the game at the end if you give him the ball. (ANDY CAN YOU HEAR ME?)
(2) Todd Herremans – come on. who wouldn’t love a plug and play offensive lineman who can neutralize a defender from virtually every offensive line position?
(3) Cullen Jenkins – this guy is a leader: both in the way he plays and in speaking up when the lockerroom is full of unwarranted attaboys.
(4) Jeremy Maclin – I think this guy is the real deal receiver.
(5) Michael Vick – so much talent. I keep waiting for that “flawless game” that I know he has inside of him … where our guys seem to have velcro hands and he doesn’t make a single mistake. So far in 2011, mr michael perfect hasn’t shown up yet.

And honorable mentions go out to:

(6) Jason Babin – gotta love the ‘tude, the sacks, and the love of the game
(7) Trent Cole – Mr. Dependable
(8) Asante Samuel – always dangerous to pick off a pass.
(9) Nnamdi Asomugha – playing a great game, now that we’ve figured out what that game is.
(10) Nate Allen – without strong safety play, this defense is listless.
(11) Kurt Coleman (see Nate Allen comments)

Most already new what his game was. We had to wait for Jaun to figure it out though.

1. LeSean McCoy – Because who doesn’t like the long lost son of Barry Sanders?
2. Evan Mathis – Please stay next year. Please, please stay.
3. Colt Anderson – Are we sure his shoes don’t have wings? Dude can fly upfield on special teams. Love watching him play there.
4. Jeremy Maclin – Who doesn’t live a feisty player who also happens to be one of the most productive receivers ever?
5. Owen Schmitt – When your nickname is “The Runaway Beer Truck”, you’re top 5 by default.
-
53. Vince Young – I hate you.

Completely agree, the dude’s playing lights out right now.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

ur nuts

hes been average at best .. herremans sucked at right tackle .. i think they should keep justice in there .. and go justice watkins jackson herremans peters .. i even started ur boy herremans .. but this post is a joke .. mvp hahahahaha he hasnt even been the best olineman on eagles .. that would be jason peters and its not even close .. saying herremans is better than peters is like saying jason avant is better than maclin .. or babin is better than cole ..

1 Shady – Im from pittsburgh and loved him ever since i got to see him as a panther, was seriously so excited when the eagles took him and has since turned into the best RB in the nfl
2 Desean Jackson – Swag, cocky, arrogant, showboats.. but backs it up, potential 6 points anytime the ball touches his hands
3 Owen Schmitt – like i said pitt football fan, so i got to see this guy play at wvu… dude is completely nuts, the definition of fullback. doesnt care about stats, he just wants to hit someone. fell in love with him when i saw him at wvu make a mistake and when he came off the feild straight up headbutted his helmet like 4 times in a row as hard as he could, hes got heart.
4 Vick – argueably the most exciting player in nfl history. he is must see tv
5 Asante – i dont really know what it is, but ive always been a huge fan of him. between the clutch picks, the pick 6’s, the pick celebration, the dreads, the smile, and the #22.. and he just looks sick in midnight green

Top 5?

5. Namdi – dude is very bright, a great person and a phenomenal corner. I’ve always enjoyed watching him play football and am thoroughly impressed with how well rounded he is at the position. Excellent tackler, can make the big hit and can press WR’s into miserable games.

4. Jason Babin – Babin, although I was 100% against signing him in the offseason, has quickly become one of my favorite Eagles. I was on the “one-year wonder” boat but Babin can easily finish his career as an elite defensive end. His personality at that position is also cool as shit. A kicking ass and taking names kind of thing and he’s got that fight in him. Also, one play in particular where he was at LDE, beat the tackle outside, the pass was completed to the opposite side of the field and he was the one who made the tackle.

3. Kurt Coleman – Yeah he shit the bed in the Giants game but this is someone who could write a book on how to tackle. He’s excellent and a gem in the what, 7th round? I hope he continues this kind of performance. Obviously, I doubt he has a 3 pick game again but I hope he’s always in the position to make plays. Very happy with how he turned out for us.

2. Evan Mathis – dude is a mauler. He’s cool as shit as well. I was very surprised when he replied to my email and even gave me tips and advice on training and dieting for football and whatnot. Very intelligent, funny and an excellent football player and I’m stoked he’s an Eagle.

1. Shady – do I need a reason? Best offensive weapon I’ve ever seen and has the ability to break the big play every time he touches the ball. Little guy, huge heart and not afraid of anything. Definitely my favorite Eagle right now.

the third wr

who catches less than 40 balls a year?

Joe Banner is Evil Banners father. Kinda like Luke and Darth Vader.

Juan Castillo switching from the offensive line coach to Defensive coordinator is soooo dumb it might just work.

Our defense will not be a top 10 defense this year.

by MightyJoeBanner on Oct 21, 2011 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Where are you getting that number?

51 catches last year
41 the year before that
Hasn’t had under 40 since 2008.

He already has 26 this year, on pace for about 60+. That pretty productive for a WR3.

1. Trent Cole B-E-A-S-T. One of Reid’s actual successful defensive draft picks. I’ll never forget that game 2 years ago where he rushed Jay Culter from the MLB spot in a night game against the Bears. Cutler looked so scared.

2. Maclin / Jackson – Check the name

3. LeSean McCoy- Currently 569 reasons to like him and more reasons to come.

4. Asante Samuel – All he has done has been the one steady part of our secondary these last 4 seasons. Not a tackler. But how can you hate a guy that has numerously been brought up and trade rumors yet acts unfazed and wants more than anything to stay here through all that?

5. Nnamdi Asomugha- NO MORE ZONE!!!!

Unsung hero edition:

1 – Jason Avant – A man of great character. It’s remarkable how he has been able to turn his life around from being a troubled kid to an honorable and successful NFL player.

2 – Colt Anderson – Guy plays his heart out on STs.

3 – Trent Cole – Very underrated outside of Eagle-dom, IMO. Seems like a great character guy as well. Maximum effort every play.

4 – Jon Dorenbos – Best LS in the league. Very ambitious man. Not only is he a great LS, but he’s also an accomplished magician and even motivational speaker. Seems like a great guy for the locker room to have.

5 – Evan Mathis – The guy has been very interactive with the fans (via Twitter and such) since he’s been here. Seems like a good guy, and he’s been playing well for us too.

Top 5

1-Shadynasty- I mean, when your nickname is the Closer and you still kick as while being underutilized, it just has to be him.

2-Trent Cole- Dude is an unsung hero and always overlooked by everybody outside of Philly fandom. Dude is a monster always and for a long time a monster all by hisself.

3-Jeremy Maclin- He is getting better every year and an even more complete receiver with time. Finally solid receivers on this effin team.

4-Michael Vick- The guy can literally change games and has a newfound love and discipline for the game. I love seeing people learn and become better from mistakes. Also, his fire as a leader FOR the team is something we havent seen from our QB in a long, long time.

5-Nnamdi Asomugha- Ive liked this guy when we was in Oakland for being all around class act. His game is nothing but phenomenal when used right. I think even if asked to play zone and once he masters that he will destroy the CB position. When you have your DC working/asking for defense help you know you are the epitome of an intelligent football player.

1) Nnamdi — Once he is used the way he should, he will be the Eagles only TRUE shutdown corner since…maybe ever. Asante is an INT machine but he is not shutdown.
Best part is hes a better person than he is a player. Pure class.

2) McCoy IMO-top 3 back in the league. Already better than westbrook as a runner, skys the limit.

3) Maclin-classy and tough.

4) Cole—endless motor. The key to our line.

5) Vick—-did his time. Survived adversity. Gives it everything hes got, every play, hes the Eagles version of Allen Iverson, except he likes to practice too :) You will never see a picture of Vick laughing or joking around after a tough loss. I love that.

Well Interesting

1. Shady McCoy – Hands down biggest threat on our team right now. Loved him in college and he has not disappointed

2. J. Maclin – Best receiver on this team and he does it quietly. Let’s everyone else take the spotlight with the media and then he takes over in the game. fantastic

3. Peters/Herrman – These guys I match very equally on keeping our O-line together to close for me to call.

4. Vick – Dude can flat out play and he alone changes people’s attitude during the game. Can be one if not the greatest we have seen on our team and will do it in a much shorter period of time. (imagine drafting him in "01, where would he be)

5. Trent Cole – This guy is the anchor of our D and when he gets back next Sunday see how much better our D-line gets. (Babin specifically) Changes the other team’s O-line outlook all together – As most people call it – GAME CHANGER

But cant that just be said for almost all of our guys?

Vick is his own category. So other than him:

1. Shady McCoy
2. Trent Cole
3. Herremans
4. Jason Peters
5. Nnamdi Asamugha
6. Jeremy Maclin
7. Mike Patterson
8. DeSean Jackson
9. Asante Samuel
10. Evan Mathis

The first Drauschak.

1) Jarrad Page – WHAT A PRESEASON. Also, he gives me hope, in that he honestly makes me think I could be a professional football player.
2) Ronnie Brown – Heads up play throwing the ball at the goal line vs. SF, and he saved a dude’s life by being traded.
3) Casey Matthews – On pedigree alone, he’s top five for me.
4) Alex Henery – He was the most accurate kicker in the HISTORY of the NFL for a part of this year.
5) Steve Smith – Best pickup ever. Period. And definitely not a Giants double agent.

Nope.

by bigmeanie08 on Oct 21, 2011 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

But seriously though

Everyone’s top 5 is gonna be five out of the same seven dudes, or Riley Cooper. It is interesting, though, to see how few lists have Vick on them.

McCoy is the best player on the team
Maclin is just an awesome football player and dude
Cole works harder than anybody
Nnamdi is phenomenal
(I’ll throw in a wild-card like everyone else)
Nate Allen is going to be really, really good IF he stays healthy, and has looked really good in every game he’s played in that counted.

Nope.

by bigmeanie08 on Oct 21, 2011 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Shady – he’s just that good! I didn’t think I would see us give a RB 28 carries in a game, but he got that because he is that good!
Trent Cole – Obvious choice is obvious.. I love the DL and this guy is top 5 DE easily
Jason Peters – I’ll agree with JIBTA here, Peters is our best blocker, he’ll shut down everybody
Owen Schmitt – I like FB’s as well and this guy just has a certain attitude about him both on and off the field that I like
Asante – He’s letting me down a bit this year it seems, but I’ve been defending this guy as a top 3 corner for two years now and so far I haven’t met a soul in Denmark that agrees
Honourable Mention:
Mike Patterson – Always liked him, don’t know why

by T-rade on Oct 21, 2011 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

1) Shady McAwesome – Badass
2) Nnamdi Asomugha – Best corner in the league (when not stuck in fucking zone, Castillo…)
3) Trent Cole – Beast and one of the most underrated player in the NFL
4) Mike Vick – You know, he’s Vick.
5) Anquan Boldin – So glad Eagles traded for this guy
