and on the third day, he ROSE FROM THE DEAD
No not Jesus, AL DAVIS!! Just when you think the Raiders couldn't get ANY DUMBER.....
THEY TOTALLY REDEEM THEMSELVES
They trade 1, possibly TWO #1 draft picks for a 31 year old QB who has been mediocre at best ever since his major knee inury.... WOW this is truly a head scratch-er, this is worse than Jery Jones giving up the farm for Roy Williams. Heck probably worse than Atlanta giving up the farm for Julio Jones...
This isn't as bad as the Herschel Walker trade not nearly as bad, but this has to be top 10 worst trades in the past 10 years.
Per NFL.com
So much for that. By trading Palmer to the Raiders on Tuesday, Brown rewarded his franchise by securing a first-round pick in 2012 and a second-round pick in 2013 that could turn into a first-rounder if the Raiders make the AFC title game this season or next. Nice reward for the Bengals.

I was waiting for the Al Davis jokes. The Bengals fleeced the Raiders. Imagine if the Bengals were going to be dicks and said no how many picks we would have got for VY

I didn't even think about that
Wow that makes me sad, imagine getting 2 first rounders for him? Omg,

Shit. I'd be ecstatic with a 3rd or 4th for Young.

5th or 7th, please.

But we could trade that 3rd and 4th for even more 5th and 7th round picks.

We really need an 8th round. The supplemental draft doesn’t count. We could also recruit from the morgue and maybe some of Jerry’s kids. Gotta keep the creative juices flowing here…

The Bengals are fricking set. They’ve got a young franchise QB in Dalton. AJ Green has looked like a future all-pro. Jermaine Gresham at TE. Andre Smith is stepping up at RT. Their offensive line is good. They’ve got a great set of coordinators in Jay Gruden (underrated!) and Mike Zimmer. They’ve got a young and extremely talented front 7 along with a probowl caliber CB in Leon Hall.
And now they get to add to their already impressive core with likely 4 first round picks the next 2 years? Wow.
But Carson Palmer is a good fit for Oakland, they just overpaid by a TON. I can’t wait to see what Hue Jackson does with him, Hue is going to make the Raiders a winner. They’ve already got a ton of young talent all over the roster and a good core of veterans with Seymour, McFadden and now Palmer. Don’t look now but the speedsters are coming together in Oakland and their defense is the biggest/fastest/strongest in the NFL. I knew they were a sleeper team heading into the year and now they’ve got a QB who can win them games.

agreed on the first part
not so much on the second. Palmer REALLY struggle dwith his accuracy these past few years. Even with a good ground game and good WRs in Ocho and TO… Granted, they were past their prime, but more than capable WR threats…. he wasn’t even a top 15 qb last year…actually his accuracy and inconsistency REALLY reminds me of McNabb….Difference is McNabb still has a strong arm, I think Palmers elbow injury REALLY hurt his arm strength
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
Well, supposedly he’s in really good shape these days. I wouldn’t be surprised if having so much time away from an NFL camp helped him to properly rehab his injury and actually helps him be something closer to what he was back in the day. Remember, the guy was at one point becoming one of the NFL’s best QB’s.
That said, no matter how big his arm is, a pocket passer isn’t going to be that great without quality receivers. I don’t think he’ll be a disaster or anything, but I’m not expecting him to light it up this year.
They say about every season
Even McNabb would say hes in the best shape and shed a few lbs . McDougle, etc, they all do.
And I agree he was becoming a really sharp player prior to the knee injury but even after he should’ve been recovered (1 year after complete rehab) he still wasn’t very good.
Either way, let’s say you’re right about him doing decent. 2 1st rounders for a 31 year old qb, who hasn’t shown much in years, who COULD be in great shape, is way wayyyyy too much
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
Nooooo doubt about that last sentence. No argument whatsoever. One first rounder would have been too much, actually. I’m pretty sure Denver would have given away Orton for a few cold beers and a Klondike bar, and I’d lean toward Orton being the more effective QB at this point in his career.
great point
and I would ttotally take orton over palmer at this point, and for he price, absolutely
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
There is no comparison between Orton on the Raiders and Carson on the Raiders.
Speaking of Klondike Bars, I think I’ll have me some.

Bengals could be crazy scary a couple of years down the road
I was thinking this when the trade news broke
now they’ve got a QB who can win them games.
I just don’t see that though. Like Joe said, Carson just hasn’t been the same since the knee injury, and he’s been out of football for close to a year. Are we even sure that he’s that much better than Campbell?
I doubt they make the playoffs this year. Palmer WILL go through growing plains while learning the offense, and if they lose even a couple of games the next few of weeks, its going to be ground that they can’t make up. San Diego will win the division and the WCs are going to go to the Steelers/Ravens and the Bills/Bangles. That doesn’t leave a spot for the Raiders, unless the Bills and Bangles both fall apart (which, I guess, is a possibility).

Campbell is out for the season
Otherwise this deal probably doesn’t go down

I seriously don't understand how, with Al Davis gone, the Raiders can keep fucking up hardcore like this

good move on the raiders part, they lost jason cambell and their playoff bound…you rather trust vince young or kyle boller back there? this is prolly gonna turn out to be 1 first round pick for a proven starter that has another 5 years of ball left in him. the raiders are not making bad moves
"Buddy doesn't have many rules but one of them is don't lose to the Cowboys."
What
are you serious, He could possibly get hurt and not play at all, it would take 2 to 3 weeks before he is up to speed and then they are out all together and becomes the worst trade ever. Would have given VY for 2 2nd rd picks or even 1 1st. They would be much better off with VY IMO.
hes a QB
you know, the MOST important position…if the raiders win the superbowl, maybe it be a steal for them? i would say that palmer wont need that much time to adjust because of the whole hue jackson connection. i wouldnt give 2 1st rounders but i like the “just win baby” mentality.

if it was 2006, iw ould say great trade. it’s 2011 and palmer is 31 and hasnt shown any flashes of his old self. You’re basicaly banking two first rounders on the fact that Hue is going to turn him into his old form. Thats a HUGE bet….
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
Why do people think that Jackson can turn back the clock no Palmer? He WAS THE FRIGGIN WIDE RECEIVER COACH!!! He had very little to do with Carson being a good QB in Cincinnati.
by philiafan14364 on Oct 19, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe you are right.
Maybe Jackson is a lucky idiot, who just happens to have his team winning, through no effort of his own.. He wouldn’t be the first one.
On the other hand, maybe he actually paid attention to what Palmer was doing at Cin and maybe he actually cultivated a working relationship with him. And maybe he has a good idea what it would take to keep the Raiders winning in a rather weak division.
Jackson does not have to turn back the clock. He needs to see that Palmer learns the Offense and stays in good enough shape to execute it. The rest would fall on the other 52 players.

The Raiders have a legitimate shot to play in the Super Bowl. Jackson coached Palmer and obviously feels comfortable with him.
If they do that would be #31-2 this year and next year maybe #24-32. That would equal about a #9.
Would anybody here give up a #9 pick to play in the SB?

When seeing that the Bengals got at least a 1st and a 3rd for Palmer, did anyone else think, “wow, we kinda got shafted for Kolb?”. Whether or not you like Kolb, I don’t think there’s any question that he had more value than Palmer, and I would take a package of 1st and a 3rd that could become a first over DRC and a 2nd, especially with the rookie contract scale.
by philiafan14364 on Oct 19, 2011 10:34 AM EDT reply actions
YEs
BUT… up until then the “anchor” for QBs with Kolb’s resume and experience was right there. Cassel and Shaub were dealt for similar prices. So yes in comparison to those “anchors” we got great trade value for Kolb… This trade set a whole new precedence though
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
I don’t think there’s any question that he had more value than Palmer
That is where you missed the boat on clear thinking.

Everybody laughs about this.
But keep in mind the Raiders are on a big playoff drought, they have a good team and needed a QB worse than anything.. Keep in mind that Carson often time had to carry that team, their running game struggled and he had to deal with Ocho, once TO and Ocho were done last season Carson put up amazing Numbers with the 3rd and 4th string WR’s.
Now, the Bengals got at minimum a 1st and 2nd rounder (in 2013), the 2nd rounder can be a 1st if the Raiders make the playoffs this year.
Now people will laugh at this but look at the facts. The Raiders have an extremely good running game, they have a solid offensive line and a good defense. Even if they don’t make the playoffs this year they have few holes to fill moving into 2012… It makes sense to give up the 1st and 2nd for a guy like Carson who’s literally just gonna have to be slightly above average as a QB which I think he can do easily.

…and then next year they don’t have a 1st-4th round pick, and no first/second rounder the following year too. That’s the problem.

exactly
let’s be honest…..raiders are improved but im sure not convoinced they are a playoff team… and if they aren’t, they just limited themselves - A LOT th enexdt two years on help buildilng a sb team….and who did they hedge their future for? a 31 y/o qb who hasnt been good since 2007
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
No. It doesn’t make sense. Not at all. It’s a terminally stupid decision. The Raiders are not a great team in 2011. They are not Super Bowl ready, and may not even be playoff ready. And that’s particularly true when downgrading from Campbell to Palmer at QB. They’ve also mortgaged 2012 and 2013 by dealing away important draft picks.
