A tribute to #5

Donovan McNabb likely started his last game in the NFL on Sunday night.  I just wanted to remind everyone how much he's meant to this franchise.  I know there's a lot of haters out there but let's keep it positive.

More wins than any QB in franchise history.

More playoff wins than any QB in franchise history.

3rd best winning % in the decade behind only Manning and Brady.

Most TDs and yards in franchise history.

Numerous division titles, 5 NFC title game appearances, 1 Super Bowl appearance.

Top 5 TD:INT ratio of all time.

Threw for 4 TD passes w/ a broken leg (for those who EVER doubt his toughness/desire to win).

Arguably did more with less than any QB of the last 20 years.  Never had the chance to stink it up for 4 playoff games and win the Super Bowl like Peyton Manning or throw for less than 200 yards and win a Super Bowl like Tom Brady/Ben Roethlisberger

An all-around good guy who did a lot for the community; the type of person you'd be proud to have as the face of your franchise (sorry Vick).

It's a shame the front office didn't get it right the FIRST TIME and surround the man w/ the playmakers we have on offense now, or we'd arguably be talking about one of the best QBs of all-time w/ multiple rings on his fingers.

You remind me of Dug from "Up".

You can be going along, perfectly normal, but as soon as you see McNabb (SQUIRREL!) is brought up anywhere on BGN you can’t help but get distracted. Fittingly, Dug hated squirrels just as you hate McNabb.

I give Mcnabb a lot of credit

He did a lot for the Eagles and I appreciate him for what he did. But it was something missing from him at times. Its like you wanted more from him. I know the talent wasn’t around him alot of times, but he couldn’t embrace what it was to make it in Philly. Its hard, and you have to have that attitude. U can’t be passive, which he was. But I love #5, hopefully he would be in the Hall of Fame one day. He definitely belongs in the Eagles Hall of Fame though

Since you playing ball let me show you how I put my "D" down........ Rebound!!! Your man dropped the ball and I caught it, Im trying to Lay-up in ur body, ya Im ballin!!!

OK Buddy

Name me 3 QBs you would’ve rather had on your team the last decade and I’ll bury your 3rd choice every time.

Also, yes… w/ McNabb’s numbers he would be considered one of the best QBs of all-time if he had won 2 championships. Look at Troy Aikman, guy’s in the HOF for basically being a glorified game manager. When did McNabb ever get the chance to go out there and manage ANY game, none the less a playoff game?

You want Warner in Philly? With our weapons back then? Do you remember how he did in New York? Do you remember how much his game dropped played outdoors? Indoors he threw for 80 more TDs than INTs, outdoors less than 10, QB Rating drops nearly 20 points. Rigghttttttt.

Brett Favre? The same guy that averaged 18 INTs a year in his last 8 seasons w/ the Packers? The same guy who threw away the NFC Title game in 2007? The same guy who McNabb beat in the playoffs? Yeah, that guy! Righhttttt, it’s not 1996.

Drew Brees? The same guy who was so awesome in San Diego when McNabb was going to the playoffs every year that the Chargers drafted his replacement w/ the 1st overall pick in the draft? Obviously the Drew Brees now is better but that wasn’t the case back then. Come on.

Rivers didn’t even see the field until the 2006 and become the player he is today until 2008. Good try .

McNair is the best case you can make during that era. But McNabb has better overall numbers, better winning %, more division titles, and 4 more playoff wins. Close, but no cigar.

There are 32 teams in the National Football League. 90% of them would’ve loved to have McNabb during his prime. I’m sorry he wasn’t Brady or Manning but those guys are once in a generation players.

A lot of those losses in the CG

were HUGELY on McNabb.. how many of those losses came down to the offense not getting ANYTHING done? TB, CAR, and even the NFC CG against Arizona McNabb played a HUGE part in not winning the game. He had a chance to make the winning drive —-and he didn’t.

He only played good against ATL and I’ll admit he was very impressive in 2001 against the Rams title game..

And he was terrible in the SB…. 4 turnovers ?

4 turnovers

I can name 2 very elite QBs who have had 4 turnovers already this year. Both against the Bills.

Of course there were games that McNabb didn’t win for us, but he was never consistently LOSING us games. He was always one of the best players on our team, and was never a liability. Year in and year out, McNabb made us a contender. There are very few Quarterbacks who you can build up a franchise around while still going to the playoffs every year.

Simply put, if you’re a real Eagles fan, McNabb at least deserves your respect.

I'm with Joe_D

McNabb was my favorite player for Eagles…..then I started examining him closely and realized he was going through the motions mentally and emotionally. He became like a tenured teacher close to retirement…..doesn’t want to do any harm, but isn’t going to go out of his way to make things better, either. Stopped getting angry over losing around 2004.

Has now had 3 head coaches just give up on him. Many players lose their fire if they play long enough…..McNabb lost his pretty early on, all things considered. I don’t think Vick is as good a passer as McNabb was in his prime, but Vick shows more anger over losing one game than McNabb did over the course of a whole season.

I don't see how being angry

equates to having a desire to win. They are separate, and anyone that doesn’t agree is someone that I feel sorry for.

Until Hank Fraley or Tra Thomas or Brian Westbrook or anyone that was actually in the huddle with 5 comes out and says that he didn’t care as much about winning as everyone else, I won’t believe it.

by The Reddgie on Oct 19, 2011 3:15 AM EDT up reply actions

A stab in the dark....

I believe people feel like Vick’s anger shows that he cares about the game and the fan base. Relating to someone who you are similar to making the experience richer at least with me. When I watch a movie, I tend to like characters who are similar to me. Growing emotional during a game is something we all like see. Sometimes it can be comical like Brandon Marshall or magnanimous like Brian Dawkins. An emotional player can either a team’s cancer or team’s panacea.

My point is Mcnabb’s demeanor was cool which can appeared complacent to some people. Everyone likes confident people. Being complacent doesn’t shows confidence instead shows satisfaction of losing.

I come in peace. Neutrality is my thing.

Barry Sanders is better than Deion Sanders.

I’ll always have some love for McNabb but I can’t get over Don’s performance in the first half of the NFC CG against the Cards. Also hate how folks describe him as a leader. Look at the way the players respond to Vick.. did that ever happen with McNabb in the huddle? No.

Wow

There is a lot of Mcnabb love in this room…..I wonder what any other QB would have done with the talent Mcnabb had up until 2009? QB’s and WR’s go hand in hand if one is lousy the other will look lousy ( Cutler in Chi, Warner with Giants). If one is great the other looks great (Warner with Cards and Rams, Palmer with Bengals). To say Mcnabb was crap now is just a miscarriage of justice. Yes he killed a few worms and missed a few WR’s but, what QB doesn’t? From 2000 to 2009 there isn’s another QB I would have rather had on this team except Manning (Peyton that is).

The Redskin have garbage at WR now and had the same garbage last year. The Vikings have nothing on the outside and both teams have MORONS calling plays. To look at Mcnabb’s career using the Vikings and Redskins as the subject matter is ridiculous.

So all you ingrates need to look back and be thankful for what Mcnabb has done for this team and leave the negative somewhere else. He will retire as an Eagles and if he goes to the HOF will enter it as an Eagle. There are no other possible HOFers from this team since Reggie left and I think he went in as a Packer.

I would love to blow up Texas Stadium... With team still in it

Missed a FEW?

a FEW?

With essentially the same players on offense we didn’t beat one winning teamin 09, with Vick we beat a lot of playoff teams and nearly beat the SB champion with no offensive line.

Even when WRs are getting open in Minnesota he still missed them by a mile or couldn’t hit them in stride. He did that HIS WHOLE CAREER here and not just a FEW times, A LOT Of the times. He really only had a few good seasons with us, the rest were inconsistent at best and he heavily relied on Brian Westbrook

I agree with Joe.

08 NFC Championship game…. was the writing on the wall. A tie against the Bengals? The fuck. We lost to the Cowboys 3 times in 09. Last game of the 09 regular season against the Cowboys… how many points did the Eagles score? Zero and that’s with Jackson and Maclin. 08 and 09 were both two years that the Eagles had a chance to win a Super Bowl. I still think this year is a rebuilding year 2.0 with Juan.

Mcnabb was benched by who? Kevin Kolb…. garbage. Imagine if he was still here.

08 Championship game huhn??????

I don’t remember seeing Mcnabb playing CB, S, or LB on either of those Fitzgerald TD’s. I do remember him playing QB in the 2nd half and ALMOST winning that game had the defense been able to stop the Cardinals.

I know the hate of Mcnabb runs deep with these newfans. But, as an old fan who was here through the Detmers, Hoying, Pederson, Brister, Boryla, and Gabriel years I know special when I see it. Had the Eagles placed a premeium on WR’s during the period of 2000-2006 the Eagles would have had multiple SB titles. Calling out Mcnabb for losses against the Panthers and Buccs just kills me. I remember seeing WR in midnight green being thrown to the ground at the line of scrimmage. Passes going off of WR hands and chests. Football is a team game one cannot do it without the team.

by bigmeanie08 on Oct 20, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Regarding 08 Championship Game

The First half Defense was so terrible. Yes McNabb missed a ton of throws in that first half, but to put all the blame on him for that first half is just ignorant. Edge looked like he was still with the Colts running against us, and Warner was picking apart our secondary like they weren’t there. McNabb was not perfect, not even close, but he is the best QB this franchise has ever had, and there is no debate, he is the 3rd best QB of his era. He consistently won games. Clearly his faults became amplified in the twilight of his career. To judge that, how he always was is crap. I’m not saying McNabb didn’t make me angry, but pardon my french, your a fucking idiot if you think McNabb wasn’t a great QB.

It’s a shame the front office didn’t get it right the FIRST TIME and surround the man w/ the playmakers we have on offense now, or we’d arguably be talking about one of the best QBs of all-time w/ multiple rings on his fingers.

There is not ONE QB in the HISTORY of the NFL that had as many excuses for his poor play in crunch time than McNabb… It was NEVER his fault - according to him as well.

This is why McNabb had such a hard time with the blackc ommunity.. Bhop, the NCAAP, etc just saw McNabb as a guy who’s ego was too boig and masked it by acting like a joker off the field and in the pres conferance…dancing, making jokes, etc… he never said “Hey it was my fault, i need to do better.” it was always some one elses fault, or “hey but we did this,” blah blah. Like others said he doesn’t have the intensity Vick has or Dawkins..

For all you so called eagles fans who dont appreciate shit.

Are you kidding me that mcnabb was a bum here in philly. He was a beast!!!! and played his ass off under any situation he faced here. through all contreversy and lack of weapons to work with, yall are retarded f you dont think he was the best qb we ever had. one year when we had one solid reciever we reached the superbowl lost to a great patriots team at that time. other years we had underachieving recievers in mitchell pinkston brown baskett who didnt help out much. i agree if we had better weapons and better play calling by coach Reid we would have at least 3 rings by now. Look at the numbers originlly posted on this article. unreal how good he really was, one of the greatest all time forsure. You shit tards are so fucking retarded to realize how good he was because you want the title like all the rest of us do and like a typically sensless philly fan you wanna blame the man under center. Of course his play declined the last couple years after dealing with injuries and playing in new systems. We treated this man like shit in philly after all those winning seasons and most of you should be ashamed of yourselves for not having any loyalty and appreciation for a great player. Vick is defienetly not an upgrade over a mcnabb in his prime and if we do win a title with vick it wont be because he is a better qb but because of the weapons around him shady jackson mccoy. Fucking idiots! #20 and #5 all time greats of this game and i thank them both for bringing my team to compete week in week out.

For all the bullshit comments> with a shitty offense minus westbrook look at the numbers assholes. you must be retarded if you cant figure out he was n awesome franchise player

Never had the chance to stink it up for 4 playoff games and win the Super Bowl like Peyton Manning or throw for less than 200 yards and win a Super Bowl like Tom Brady/Ben Roethlisberger.

An all-around good guy who did a lot for the community; the type of person you’d be proud to have as the face of your franchise (sorry Vick).

It’s a shame the front office didn’t get it right the FIRST TIME and surround the man w/ the playmakers we have on offense now, or we’d arguably be talking about one of the best QBs of all-time w/ multiple rings on his fingers

Two very funny things

A) It’s funny… Right now Kevin Kolb is playing behind a TERRIBLE offensive line.. He’s not playing well… If McNabb wasn’t playing well with a bad offensive line everyone would point the fact out that the offensive line sucks and it’s not McNabb’s fault….

B) Everyone’s trying to tell me “HEY JUST APPRECIATE WHAT HE DID HERE.” OK, here we are, Andy Reid, the most winningest coach, in history of the franchise, and one of the most winningest in the league — ever. And 90% of you are saying "FIREHIM HES A FAT DUMB ASS, BLAH BLAH BLAH. "But say anything about McNabb and we’re low life losers?

While McNabb was our QB, there might have been 8 QBs who were better than him

There were at least 60 other starters in that time who were worse. That’s why people like him. For all of his flaws, we could have had so much worse. Only 9 QBs won Superbowls during McNabb’s 11 years here, including Brad Johnson, Eli and Dilfer. Do we really want those three over McNabb? That’s why the whole “he didn’t win a a Superbowl” argument is garbage to me. The only others who did while he was here was Warner, Peyton, Brees, Brady, Elway, and Roethlisberger — all are probable HOFers. McNabb made us relevant again, and kept us there his entire career. He didn’t do it alone; he had a great o-line, a good defense, and Westy, but he deserves a lot of credit.
