Ok so this may be a bit early to start discussing this, but with how the season has gone so far I couldn't help myself. The eagles biggest problems are pretty apparent, the offensive line, the linebackers and the safeties. everyone knows this. including andy reid. the question is how will the problems be addressed?
in my opinion the biggest problem right now is the linebackers. though he was benched i do like casey matthews, just not for right now. i think he has a bright future however i think he needs to mature a little bit before being put back in the starting lineup, and when that time comes i think hes better suited as an OLB. Chaney i think is good in the middle and i like fokou also. however the problem with these guys and especially Rolle is that they are undersized, and from just watching them, none seem to be a ferocious type of linebacker like you see with Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis. i understand those guys are two of the top linebackers in the league, but to be a linebacker in the NFL you need to have some sort of nasty in you. i just dont see that in tthe linebackers this year. to fix the linebacker problem i think a veteran needs to come in to give leadership and mentor our young linebackers. a good option may be Lance Briggs as he basically has his foot out the door in Chicago. or they can do something they havent done since 79 and draft a linebacker in the first round. two good options may be vontaze burfict of ASU or manti te'o out of Notre Dame.
the safeties are disappointing. i thought when drafting Nate Allen we had found our new Wolverine to replace Dawkins. no one can replace him however and Allen is no exception. i understand he has been hurt but im still a little let down by him. Coleman i believe is our best safety but he has some moments of great play and then some of bad play. Page is just terrible. im sorry its no wonder this guy has been cut by so many teams. i know he got 11 tackles against Buffalo but still, this guy gets beat SO much. in my opinion its time we give second round pick Jaiqwuan Jarrett some play time and see what hes capable of. Reid said he reminded him of Dawkins, so lets see if he plays like him. the thing weve been lacking for a few years now which i mentioned earlier was the absence of an emotional leader on defense. can Jarrett fill that role? as a rookie no and nor do i believe any of the current safeties can be that either. maybe down the road Jarrett will be, but in the next draft maybe taking a shot at another safety wouldnt be a bad idea like aplayer suchh as Robert Lester out of Alabama.
the offensive line has a lot of holes and if Vick wasnt so mobile i thnk it would look even worse. i think it was a stretch to go for Watkins last year. a 26 yr old rookie is not a good situation. for all of our sakes i hope he does better once he starts playing. Justice has always been shaky. Peters is our best lineman, if only he could stay healthy. the spot on the line i think were really missing is a solid center. blitzes need to be picked up better, and thats not totally on the center, Vick needs to do a better job of recognizing them also. but the O line is definitely a need for next year, whether we draft another young lineman or get one in free agency.
in the end i think our best course of action in terms of the linebackers is let matthews grow, have Chaney in the middle for the rest of the season, and for next year try to get Briggs and if that falls through draft high, preferably first round with Burfict or Te'o. the safeties just need to get better at tackling. Jarrett is a solid hard hitting tackler and i think would do well this year. Play him and Coleman and bring Allen in when a sub is needed. O line i think needs to be addressed in the draft. use the two second round picks to draft good solid smart offensive linemen.
i know im not the only one out there thinking these things. what other thoughts or opinions does every have?
