My BGN Brothers, I know this is a dark hour for us and for the Philadelphia Eagles. We're all trying to absorb a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of a damn good Packers team, and we're all thinking about this upcoming offseason. But as I look around Eagles Nation, I see people pointing the finger at David Akers, and even calling for his release. My thoughts on that after the jump...
Nobody has played more games in an Eagles uniform than David Akers. Nobody has played in more Eagles playoff games than David Akers, and I guarantee you no one feels worse about this loss than David Akers. Did his two missed field goals cost the Eagles a win? Most likely. But to be calling for his head after this game is beyond ridiculous.
For one: it was windy. With a wind gust between 13-20 miles an hour and a wind chill of 20, kicking field goals isn't easy...for anyone. I think you have to credit the wind for his first miss.
Secondly, Akers is a very valuable asset to this team. Without him and his perfect onside kick, I guarantee you we wouldn't have beaten the Giants. It was his foot that won us the Denver game last season, and his foot that won us the wild card game against the Giants in 2006. It's not very often that you see David Akers miss a field goal.
And here's the big picture: he's still one of the best in the game. Let's play 'Take-Your-Pick'.
Who would you rather have? David Akers, or David Buehler?
David Akers or Graham Gano?
David Akers or Ndamukong Suh? (Don't answer that)
So please, guys. It wasn't Akers' best game by a long shot...but come on. It will be a sad day when he retires and we actually have to worry about kicking.
