***First and foremost, before reading this I want all you to know that I love Michael Vick and would take him any day over Kevin Kolb. A lot of you might jump on me for this post thinking I don't support Vick but I do and hope he can lead us to a Super Bowl victory. This is just something I thought of for this off-season and I wouldn't be terribly upset if the Eagles did this.***
Yes I know, we‘re rumored to be placing the franchise tag on Michael Vick in the next month or so but everyone just think, what if we trade Vick and keep Kolb as our starting QB. Playing for the Eagles in limited action (19 games played, 7 games starting) he has looked spectacular at times, like against Atlanta this year and New Orleans and Kansas City last year, and a dud at others, including the season opener against Green Bay and the last game against Dallas. He is inconsistent but with more games and game time experiences he can only get better and more comfortable being a starting QB in the NFL.
One of my main points of bringing this up is our right tackle, Winston Justice, who had a disappointing year after having a solid 2009 season. Which is why we signed him to a pretty big 4-year deal. We all know that left tackles need to be more athletic and more dominant because they face the better pass rushers so they can attack the QB from the blindside. Since Michael Vick is a left handed QB it forces Winston Justice to face more blitzes and better players he has to block which he is obviously unable to do so or he would have been a left tackle. With a right handed QB he would be a very good right tackle but is getting a bad rap this off-season because he is not used to blocking the blind side of a QB.
This would change the way we approach free agency and the draft dramatically. We could trade Vick and for sure get an early first rounder for him. Also it would take a great deal of money off the books since Kolb is only expected to be paid 1.4 mil next year so instead of paying Vick the 20+ mil we would be able to pay more to the Nnamdis and the Haynesworths or be able to get more high impact free agents. If we don’t happen to sign Nnamdi in the off-season we could use the Vick 1st rounder pick to draft Prince Amukamara from Nebraska and be set at RCB for a number of years seeing how he can be a guy who can come in and make an impact right away. And assuming the new CBA makes a rookie wage scale we wont have to overpay for him either. Then with our no. 23 pick we can draft either Gabe Carimi or Michael Pouncey (who are my favorite offensive lineman in the draft) to take over the RG position. Jamaal Jackson hopefully comes back healthy and better than ever and with the right side of the line would be solidified with Carimi/Pouncey and Justice. It would be a much easier transition for Kevin Kolb being a very good offensive line.
If we do happen to sign Nnamdi then we could trade down from our high draft pick instead of drafting Prince and get some quality defensive lineman or linebackers like JJ Watts or Akeem Ayers in the middle of the first round. And we can focus are other later picks adding depth and a game changing return man for PR/KR. With a potential great defense (especially if we can add Fat Albert) and a good offensive line and playmakers on the offensive side of the ball Kevin would be able to ease into the position easier and eventually become the QB for years to come like he was drafted to be.
I know this is all just hypothetically speaking and I highly doubt we would trade Vick because then this past year would have been kind of a waste because we could have been developing Kolb but its just an interesting scenario to think about. And I think Andy knows the clock is ticking for him to at least get to a Super Bowl so hopefully he’s not messing around and actually brings in some great players.
