Eagles fans...have faith!!!

As a life long Birds fan I have had my share of doubts and holes punched in the wall, lol, but I also have had some reason to have hope in Reid and Co. Now bear with me because I am going to have to do some soul searching, but lets begin.

1. The Packers may have won last week, but at what cost. Now, yes they are good and will be a tough test, but these high tempo, bruising high emotionally draining games have their effect. Look at us after that win against NY. We came out flat and misfired all game. (Not to mention having the game moved, which in itself screwed us) You can easily think I am reaching here, but believe it, this things matter. I have a feeling GB will come out flat and Rodgers will be a little off.

2. As much as Andy Reid pisses me off, in the past he has shown very good playoff schemes. He WILL run the ball this Sunday. He WILL have short quick passes for Mike Vick to slow down the blitz. He WILL throw more slip screens and quicks in the flat. The big man usually does what is necessary to win. We have had success in the playoffs and I (gulp) believe he will do what is necessary. Do I think he won't stretch the field, no he will, he'll take his shots, and why not, Vick can launch it, but DJ will take some short stuff.

3. The Minnesota game. Plain and simple. That was the best thing that could have happened to us. How good is Andy off of byes and losses. Don't include yesterdays preseason game. Minnesota had nothing to lose so they threw every blitz scheme they had at us. Have faith in the playcalling and Castillo, we have made it happen most of the year.

4. Vick's "injury." Its a contusion people. I love reading all the blogs and articles, especially Peter King, and how we hope he's healthy. He doesn't have a sprain, he has a bruise. He'll play and he will play at a high level. He just needs to have quick and early reads, which Andy needs to give him.

5. Our defense. (ugh). How can we do any worse. LOL. We can build off that performance yesterday. I have NO faith in McDermott and I personally think he is awful and has no symbol to his coaching. I personally think he will scheme simlar to what people have been doing to Vick. Contain blitz.

My prediction 31 24 Birds

Why was that a good thing? I’m not sure I’m catching on.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 3, 2011 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

the logic I've heard goes like this:

If we had gone all out to beat the Vikings, and then the Cowboys there was no guarantee that the Bears were going to give up the number 2 spot anyway. So, why put in all that effort only to have it fall in your face, and now you have to play 3 games in 12 days. we needed the rest, this was the guaranteed way to get it.

on top of that

They got raped by the blitz. Now Marty, Vick and the whole offense has to plan and practice against it for the playoffs. Better then than now kinda thing. I dunno, losing is nevver really “the best thing that could happen”, but there are usually silver linings in these things…

I only have something to say

On your 1st and 5th comment.

1) Yea those high tempo games take alot out of you. But im sure they will get the tempo back knowing they just made the playoffs.

5) McDermott Sucks Balls, That is all thank you.

Alright, makes sense,

however what if our Starters come in and completely shit themselves since they got the week off?

Lay off McDermott

You try having a good defense with no rotation guys at DE, at Will LB who is a loser, have to start to 7th round rookies and Dmitiri Patterson opposite Asante Samuel. Give him credit, this the best our Run D has been in a long time. He prepared Jamar Chaney and put him in a position to succeed from the get go. If his defense blows the playoffs for us we still got Dick Jauron as our D-Backs coach as a possible replacement. (anyone who starts suggesting we hire Mike SIngletary as our D-Cord will be beaten)

Aiding in the beatings of people suggesting the D-cord change, or aiding in suggesting Singletary take over?

you know......

i was willing 2 overlook all the points we were allowing in the begininng of the year because we were almost tops in the league at takeaways, remember when our D was healthy in the first half of the year it was serviceable, but i agree this is Mcdermotts last chance maybe 2 save his job, bring on………..

by goldenbird09 on Jan 4, 2011 7:20 AM EST up reply actions

Point taken Midwest

But his ingame calling, on 3rd and longs we just sit back and let them take half the field, its ridiculous. I would rather get beat going after the QB then let him beat us.

by Sikahema on Jan 3, 2011 2:48 PM EST reply actions

This game we have to attack

Rodgers. He’ll burn us if we blitz, he’ll burn us if we stay back… But if we get to him chances are he’s not gonna have a good game (or finish it)

here's the thing on blitzing

If teams are going to max protect you have to be careful when you blitz. As long as your blitzes aren’t predictable.

by MidwesternEaglesfan on Jan 3, 2011 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Aside from the last Dallas game, majority of his blitzes are predictable.

Eagles still have McDermott? Fuck me.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
RIP Sean McDermott's job.

by Imp on Jan 3, 2011 3:32 PM EST reply actions

I really don't get

The hatred for McDermott. Is he Jim johnson? No, he isn’t, but he’s working with a lot of rookies, backups and third stringers. I mean, with the way the Run D has been playing, we’re going to get beat occasionally with the pass with a defensive backfield of Dimitri Patterson/Trevard Lindley/Joselio Hanson and Kurt Coleman on one side of the field.

by rharris0127 on Jan 3, 2011 4:28 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

not sure yet
we’re going to get beat occasionally with the pass

the problem is, this is not an occasional beating we’re taking. This is an outright weekly flogging!!!

I’m not ready to be down on McDermott, b/c I see what you’re saying. It might simply be the personnel…so I’ll give him another year to figure it out…but he spent this last offseason trying to dramatically upgrade our pass rush, and I’m not seeing the results of that effort. We rarely get to the QB without a big blitz, and it’s so frustrating b/c I feel like our opponents get to Vick on EVERY play

by jalarsen1 on Jan 3, 2011 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

But...

That may be the difference between other teams’ serviceable offensive line and our ramshackle, makeshift offensive line of candyland castoffs.

It’s true, our pass rush SHOULD be a lot better than it is, but injures have been the story of our defense this year. I think 2 scoops of Jeremiah Trotter would help fix everything.

Here's my probems

1. Teams have seemed to figure out Vick lately, and he’s reverting back to the “1st read, then run” mentality.
2. O-line is porous and very thin in talent.
3. D is beat to shit.
4. Dimitri Patterson is the second coming of Elvis (Toast) Patterson
5. We’ve looked like shit the last three games, save 7:33 of the vaGiants game.
6. Clay Matthews is a snot-blowing freak.
7. Opposing D-backs get physical w/ our WR’s and wait for Celek to drop a pass, Avant to catch the short slant and fall down, or camp out on Shady and the safety valve screen and run right thru our aforementioned sucky lineman (w/ the exception of Todd H) and kill him 3 yards short of the sticks.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think we’re one and done this year.

Two things:

1. If you don’t realize how well Jason Peters has been playing of late, you haven’t been paying attention. We have 2.5 good OLmen, Peters, Herremans, and Justice.

2. I agree. The Packers will beat us, probably by at least 10 points.

Yeah, props to Peters, and Justice has shown improvement. Interior line is horrific.

i dont think teams have figured out Vick as much as they have figured out the play calling.

It seems as if Vicks progressions start at the long ball then back in. If hes waiting for the 1st progression to develop, theres usually someone bearing down on him by the time he finds 2 or 3

As an Eagles fan in Louisiana, If we meet up with the Saints in the playoffs we better fcking win !!!

by EaglesandRavensFan on Jan 3, 2011 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldnt say that Vick is reverting

but that our o-line disintegrates before our 15 second to develop play can ACTUALLY develop. We need the play calling to adjust for hot reads and to attack the blitz.

Going Into This Season, My Expectations Were Very Low.....

Kolb, the O-Line and the Secondary were all concerns of mine.
The Kob question has been (more than) answered by Vick.
The O-Line, has had their moments (both good and bad) but continue to be sub-playoff caliber.
The defense (not just the secondary, but the whole defense) has been just awul.
All that being said…..
This team has gone a lot further than I (and many of you) expected at the start of the season (thank you Mr. Vick), but I think that the playoffs is where reality sets in.
Certainly, we have enough offensive weapons for this team to catch lightining in a bottle and win it all.
But this is the playoffs, were the pretenders get sifted out from the contenders
Our offensive stars can’t afford to play 1 bad half.
If they do, it’s all over…..

Why the Eagles will win

The packers have no running game!

If the Eagles can’t hold the one dimensional packers under 25 and score 30 points against a tired and injury riddled GB defense then they don’t deserve to win.

Their best guy in the backfield is John Kuhn, from my high school, and he’s good for 1-3 yards per carry.
