Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Broderick Bunkley and Darryl Tapp

Bunkley:

It wasnt too long ago that this guy (along with Patterson) was considered a run stopping force. We all remember how he and patterson were largely credited with shutting down Brandon Jacobs and the giants running game in the playoffs a few years ago.  Since then...what the hell happened ? This guy looked like a beast coming out of college and we thought he would be the next Warren Sapp...or at least something close.  As it turns out its not our scheme that cant get pressure on the QB...it was HIM. Dixon has been a great player for us and has pushed the middle and been dominant against the run. AND hes gotten pressure.  Not sure if Bunkleys been injured for awhile or he just cant play anymore.

Darryl Tapp: Every time this guy is n there it seems like hes making plays. Is there any reason why HE cant be the answer opposite trent cole or does he only play on Coles side. If hes on coles side is it that hard to switch ? He seems like a really solid player who doesnt get enough reps.

BTW--Eagles 30 Pack 27

Umm

Bunkley was playing very well before he got hurt, the Dixon came in and he’s just better right now.

Tapp, he’s coming in to spell Cole or Parker, as a full-time starter I dont think he’d be as effective. However he’s perfect for the role he’s playing right now.

Well in what way?

It certainly wasn’t run defense. The first 4 weeks he was in, our run defense was one of the worst in the league. Since then, with Dixon in, we’ve been shutting great RBs down. Bunkley is definitely the difference. That doesn’t mean he’s terrible, but he wasn’t pulling his weight.

I gave Dixon credit, however when Bunkley went down we also made changes to Fokou and JP which helped out immensely cant credit 1 guy with that improvement.

Parker scares me, he can't contain anyone.

In the last two games he has not clamped down at all

by Sikahema on Jan 3, 2011 12:56 PM EST reply actions

Eh, let's be honest,

Against the Vikings the angles and containment he had was pretty good, but he was trying to contain a guy who runs a 4.5 and Webb was just able to take a deep angle and get around… Have somebody slower in there and Parker makes the play.

and the Giants game he played pretty well.

yup

I was gonna say the same thing.

He was in a really good position against Webb several times, and he would have gotten a slower QB easily.

More than several,

I saw 3-4 times where I think it would’ve been a sack had it been a slower QB…

I think Bunkley is just one of those guys who never turned out to be a great NFL player. (I disagree with wild_eagle’s assessment that he was playing really well.) He’s never been terrible — the Eagles have had far worse busts on the d-line, but any thoughts that he might be one of the rare impact players at defensive tackle have evaporated by now. He’s okay, but that’s it.

I’m not sure Tapp is a starter. I think he’s benefitted from not having to play every down, and he’s probably not going to manage a lot of sacks. Juqua has been the guy because he started off the season really well, but it seems that yet again he’s run out of gas late in the season. Really a shame that Graham got hurt, I feel like he would really be coming on right about now.

I think they should

split time between Tapp and Parker, and I disagree with what you said about him running out of gas, he looked good out there against the Giants and Vikings, Had Webb been slower he probably would’ve managed 2-3 sacks that night, you cannot expect a DE to chase down a guy who runs a 4.5.

again, I agree

Parker seems to be wearing down since Graham went out, so I don’t see why they don’t spell him more with Tapp to keep Parker fresh and give Daryll more time

Yeah Tapps

been getting meaningful contributions this entire year so why not increase his time till we find a happy medium?

We don't need Tapp to start. He's been good the way he's been used.

At this point everyone just needs to give 100% and play smart. It’s a patched up DL.
For the future, Bunkley is not much, Dixon can become a studly DT if he continues to develop, and we need a bonafide LDE. Still.

I've said this before and got creamed for it on here.

We need guys in there to close a pocket and get some push. Dixon seems to have what it takes. I hate this small ass D we play with. I dont see the point of it at all.
I know, I know small fast guys. Thats bull shit . It worked when JJ was here because he was a blitzing guru. " I miss the hell out of that guy" .
I want a real defence coordinator. and a real grown man, NFL sized, defence. You can wash 1/2 the D and it wouldnt hurt my feeling at all. I’ve been spoon fed this small high motor guy crap too long. " Besides Trent Cole He’s a Beast".
Our guys are so small it take like 1/2 the team to take guys down. How many arm tackles have you seen other teams run right through. Tons.

Sorry I know I went off topic but I got caught up in the who D thing.

Football these days...

…is more about coverage than about run stopping. How many TRUE rushing offenses are there today? The emergence of the tight end as more than just a blocker but as an Antonio Gates-type player who is athletic, runs routes, and catches the ball has taken away the 260lb linebacker’s effectiveness. He can’t stay on the field anymore because good teams have a player in the passing game to exploit him. Wonder why Brady is playing better without Moss? It is not because Moss had lost a step, but because he now focuses on getting the ball to his two pass catching tight ends (Hernandez and Gronkowski) and his undersized receivers (Welker and Edelman).

Now, to be clear, not many linebackers can cover these guys consistently. However, it is expected that when playing zone, they can be quick enough to make plays in their area of responsibility. And most linebackers that size can’t.

by Qwest on Jan 3, 2011 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yea but qwest

If that true with as fast as our D is why does it suck so bad?

by greenage on Jan 3, 2011 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

Tapp yes, Bunkley no.

You know one thing that helps coverage?

A DL that collapses the pocket. Dixon can do that, Patterson a little, too, Bunkley not much at all. Laws has the type of skills that help.

We’ve tried to find a pressure generating LDE for how long? Parker is the best we’ve had since Wm Fuller, that is a long time ago. I say keep trying. I don’t think Graham is the answer but he could be a contributor if he has a “professional” attitude.

DT

seems to be the only spot on the roster that benefits from size. Other than that, you have to have speed to cover

I just don’t understand how someone so fucking strong like Bunkley can’t get decent pressure at least. He must be a complete dumbass or something.

He used to play for the Rams, you know?

And I think it was on DLine. So if Terry Crews can dance like that, why not Bunkley?

by Qwest on Jan 3, 2011 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

He played for the Eagles too.

by greenage on Jan 3, 2011 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

You have to accept Bunkley for what he is

Hes not going to be a sack machine inside, but thats not really what hes there to do. DTs primary focus is stuffing in the run. If he can do that effectivley, I think that makes him at least pretty good. Not at all worth a first round pick, but good nonetheless.

by philiafan14364 on Jan 3, 2011 10:07 PM EST reply actions

This is why you dont spend a 1st round pick on the Dline

The only time I think you should spend your 1st round pick on a D lineman is if its DE and a player like mario williams or julius peppers who are freak athletes. A lot of great lineman have come from the later rounds.

by andyb on Jan 4, 2011 4:37 AM EST reply actions

That doesn't mean you don't spend one on DLine...

…just that you have a good chance of finding gold later too. Especially if they are Samoan! lol

You can’t discount the effect Suh and McCoy had on their teams this year.
