If he couldn’t make it work in our defense, he sure as hell won’t make it work in Carolina.

He's slick, he's quick, he's Michael Vick.

He’s only 36. He’s got lots of time to make things work.

That he got this DC job is proof of 2 things.

1. The Panthers are a damned franchise forsaken by God.

Shit, McD had a scheme? Who knew.. maybe we should have kept him.

by cin7 on Jan 17, 2011 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

That’s entirely possible. Keep in mind, Ron Rivera, a defensive guy, is the head coach there. McD is not going to have the same autonomy he had in Philly. McDermott might be the DC, but Ron Rivera is surely going to have a lot of input in guiding him.

I can’t even fathom how God awful their defense is going to be. It’s going to be our terrible game planning minus the talent.

I'm genuinely glad for him

Lower expectation, having more help from Rivera and other support staff. I still believe he can be a good coach

Same.

I think he can be a good coach eventually, it just wasn’t going to happen here.

Agreed

I think it’s a great landing spot for Sean, he gets to be mentored by Rivera and have a chance to build from scratch in Carolina.

Good for him.

Going to a team with low expectations should mean he has some time to get guys that work well in his system…what ever the heck that maybe.

And some slow corners. And some CFL guys on injured reserve at linebacker.

I think this is a perfect fit for him.

They’re rebuilding and he’ll have plenty of time to get guys that fit his system and work out the kinks in his own schemes, as well as work hand in hand with Riviera a guy who worked under JJ as well.

by stash600 on Jan 17, 2011 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Yup

I was thinking the exact same thing. He has a chance to make his work/bring his players/tinker over the next 2 years.

What I wonder though if he learned that vacillating too much with individual players and their roles is a tough thing to do in the NfL without a proven rep.

by MG77 on Jan 17, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

What the hell is his scheme even?!

I remember in Training camp he wanted to have a dominant front 4 and rarely blitz, kinda like the Vikings play, as in have the front four pass rush, and the back 7 coverage

but then during the season he would make the front four drop into coverage and have like a random CB blitz :S

he needs to figure shit out

That's just it.

He does not have a plan. Ever. He’s just incredibly bad at developing players, putting people in the right position, scheming against offenses and adapting to problems as they emerge. He is just terrible. One of the worst.

Bowen made some good points today

Said that McDermott moved up as fast as he did the last few years because of Harbaugh/Spagnola getting head coaching gigs & JJ’s deaths. Likely way he moves up that fast otherwise just on merit.

Also added he imagines that Dawkins leaving was a big blow to McDermott because he was the undisputed leader of this defense and Dawkins was a guy that knew McDermott very well. It has gradually come out that there were veteran guys who questioned McDermott last year especially and that they were all shipped out or removed.

by MG77 on Jan 17, 2011 5:38 PM EST reply actions

I think this is great! I couldn’t be happier for Sean. You guys might not like him for the Eagles and he had some big shoes to fill here, but there is No doubting his work ethic and I see him as becoming a great coach in the future..Good luck SEAN!

by piercit on Jan 17, 2011 5:59 PM EST reply actions

His work ethic might have been great, but he couldn’t get the player’s to work for him. I’m not quite sure how you go into a god-awful team with the worst NFL record in 2010 and gain the respect of the players. I don’t think he has a chance in hell to make it work.

good luck

Its a good opportunity for him. Rivera calls the shots, and they’ll work great together. Sean gets to tweak, refine, and time to grow. Its a natural fit.

Philadelphia is too Win-Now for him to suceed with anything less than jim johnson like preformances.

2010-11 Predictions:

Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.

Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith

Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks

11-5 finish.

McD & the 3-4 Defense

New H.C. Ron Rivera will apparently call the defensive signals for the Panthers.

In S.D. he ran a 3-4 defense, with which McD has no pro experience. Maybe because that’s what the Chargers’ personnel dictated.

Before joining the Chargers, I don’t think Rivera had any 3-4 experience. Now, just 4 years after getting fired by the Bears from his D.C. job, Rivera’s a head coach. [Being a “bad” D.C. apparently has no correlation to getting a H.C. job. Maybe it’s a talent thing. I have no idea.]

So it’ll be interesting to see what Rivera does in Carolina.

The fact he hired McD points to a 4-3 scheme.

But if Rivera is a guy who’s approach is to build around the talent he has — and I have no idea what, if any, talent the Panthers have or which scheme it favors — he may go with a 3-4. I think McD would benefit from learning some new tricks.

Well

Good for him, he’s still a young guy with, perhaps, a long career. I wish him the best, except when he’s coaching against the Eagles.

by rich p on Jan 17, 2011 6:59 PM EST reply actions

Don’t you guys remember how the D opened the season last year in Carolina. They played awsome. It was the beginning of the end for Carolina that year and set that team into rebulding mode.. Don’t think Carolina missed that point. We had just lost Stew and our D dominated that game. I along with many others thought Sean coached a great game. Injuries and lack of talent to caused the mess we had on D though. Sean did his best but, it just wasn’t good enough. He will learn from his past experience and become a great D coordinator. The guy is just too smart and too hard working not to succeed.

by piercit on Jan 17, 2011 7:07 PM EST reply actions

The beginning of the end for Carolina was that playoff game against Arizona in 2008. Those 5 interceptions and one fumble from Jake Delhomme completely ruined them, and that carried over. The game against the Eagles just made things worse.

I noticed. I don’t blame them; he’s not going to have a major role (from all implications at least), and it gives him time to rebuild his confidence. Plus, they do have a decent LB core and their line has been ok. (Remember when it was simply unstoppable a few years back? Oi).

I think Sean has a great opportunity in Carolina.

In Philly, he had no one to really help him adjust after JJ died, and he worked for an offensive coach so mentoring may not have been easy. In Carolina, he gets to work for a Defensive guy. When your coach is an offense guy they normally have strong, veteran def coordinators and Sean was not that. Now Sean also gets the number 1 pick which is almost definitely going to be on his side of the ball, so he can model and adjust. This team needs a def tackle bad though. Hey lets trade Bunkley and some silly string for a Chris Gamble and a travel thermos.

He'll be back.

And once he does he’ll do fine. We just dont have time to wait for his learning curve.

And I can back these statements up with the most indisputably accurate source of all time: my opinion.
