I haven't had any problem with McDermott all year, but now I am thinking that maybe he is better at personnel decisions than he is at coaching the defense. So much is made of him being a Jim Johnson protege, but it doesn't matter much if you don't do the things you were mentored to do. More after the jump...
Jim Johnson was KING of the bend but don't break defense. Jim Johnson was EXCELLENT at mixing blitz and coverage and making you take 3 points in the redzone. Jim Johnson was KING of playing coverage on third and short while blitzing and tacking short of the first down on third and long. McDermott didn't coach that way at all.
Too many times I saw him do just the opposite...blitzing on third and short while playing coverage on third and long. Both plays will result in an extremely high third down percentage and keep our defense from being able to get off the field. Any team can complete a high percentage of passes for first downs when they only need 4 yards or less. Most times the team is in the shotgun, can see the blitz coming, and can even put a back in the backfield to help pick up the blitz and the blitz simply doesn't have time to get there before the route is complete. Also, especially the better passing teams, will convert a high percentage of third and medium to third and longs when you only rush four, unless you can get home consistently like the Giants or the Bears. Too many people to cover for too long a time.
And I haven't even talked about the redzone defense. i will leave that up to the people who comment on this post. I will just say that it is RIDICULOUS the percentage of redzone touchdowns we allowed this season. Execution for TDs in the redzone is supposed to be one of the hardest things offenses can do...we made it look easy for them. And that is not about the players, that is 80% about the scheme and the plays called. And that responsibility lies firmly on McDermott's shoulders.
I'm not going to call for his firing, but we have a very capable defensive coordinator waiting in the wings if we did go that route.
What say you guys?
