Eagles Sign Four Players
Now that the season is over, the Eagles are constrained by a roster limit, so they've signed a few players to start filling out their offseason roster. Today they agreed to terms with WRs Rod Harper and ex Giant Sinorice Moss as well as offensive lineman Dallas Reynolds and A.Q. Shipley.
The only guy of the four who spent any meaningful time in the league is Moss, who was a second round pick of the Giants in 2006. He was a star at the University of Miami and his brother is Redskins WR Santana Moss. His time with the Giants was marked by injury and disappointment when he was healthy enough to play. His "bust" status was confirmed when the Giants released him in November.

When does Free Agency Start?
Just wanted to mark my calendar for when we’d get Nnamdi Asomugha.

Sinorice Moss is the first guy we’ve signed all year who I had previously heard of. Its a good idea, I was less than impressed with Avant this season. Maclin also looked average sometimes, even if his numbers didn’t reflect it.
He's slick, he's quick, he's Michael Vick.

I can see him being a slot guy, he’s small and quick. I don’t really know how he was used in NY, maybe he wasn’t being used properly. Or of course, he could end up not doing anything.

you would think but,
He was horrible at both, even with his speed and size. Hey, he couldn’t even win the job this year for us. What’s that tell ya?

that he is just as bad now as when he was drafted
off-season can be delusion time for some
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
I'm with you...
He won’t make your cut unless he is a born-again receiver. We’ve been questioning why he was holding a roster spot on the Giants for so long.
sigh...
I’ve never really thought of Maclin as a great receiver. I think if you take away Desean and have him as the number 1, he looks a lot worse. He makes a lot of dumb plays and looks like he will stop going for the ball if a hit is coming. He has talent, but he doesn’t impress me as much as he impresses others. Avant is a loose cannon, he’ll either make an amazing catch or drop one right in his hands. He’s all over the place sometimes.
He's slick, he's quick, he's Michael Vick.

You're blind
sorry man Maclin is our best pure WR. Best route runner, best at finding holes in zones, can get off the line vs the jam.

Yeah I think Maclin is very solid
and the more likely of the two to have a long career with the Eagles.
but he and Jackson are both keepers so who cares? Don’t let either one walk.

You’re an idot. He is by far the best pure wideout we have.

Yeah but
DeSean houses that crossing pattern. Jeremy could have at least gave him a stiff arm or something, anything. Like Cris Carter, he only catches TD’s. Haha, THAT’S A JOKE!!!!
by ThePaceMaker on Jan 10, 2011 6:36 PM EST up reply actions
What about Maclin makes him good? He doesn’t have great speed, unless he jukes a guy out in his route, he gets caught after he catches the ball 95% of the time. His hands are good, but not great. He makes bone headed plays frequently (like many players on the team) and shys away from contact when the ball is coming to him. He has a very good build, but he doesn’t use it. His stats were deceptive in my opinion. He’s good, but he’s definatly overrated.
He's slick, he's quick, he's Michael Vick.

Well.............
With the amount of money the Birds have tied up with Samuel, not to mention the number of FA’s they have to sign, I just cant see this FO forking out the bucks the Nmandi (sp) will command.
On the same song different note however
I dont see a lot the HAVE to come back (besides DJax, Mike and Mikell). Is there a FA list posted anywhere? Also didnt Kolb Make about 11 mil this year to hold a clip board? A bit of cap space for the best #2 in the biz huh…
I hope you are not implying the FO is "cheap".
It’s cap management, and if they think 12M or whatever to Asomugha helps the team more than 12M elsewhere, they’ll do it.
I hope he wants to come here.
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
IDK
Throw in the edge that winning brings and the fact that we can say we actually need him and there you go bang boom the door is open for him to walk in. Age is a non issue to me. Great corners tend to stay pretty damn good through the years.
I know
but I cant help it.

If I had Jackson, Avant, and Maclin, I’d be wondering whether I could transition Moss into a punt coverage or something. He’s not bad, he just ain’t good.

Sounds like a good candidate for
“favorite player to hate”
Every fan base needs 1 of them.
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
FO loved him.
They must have seen something we never did because when it came time to play the game, he was always a underwhelming. We tried him on returns and he was terrible, and he couldn’t even crack the starting line up after Burress went to prison. He’s just not a good player—though there’s the chance he could still prove something.
He will either make the Eagles and be good, or he won't make it out of training camp
I doubt he is going to be able to stick around and not produce, nobody remembers he was a 2nd rounder anymore.

Not very good kick returner or punt returner
He has good straightline speed but he has no wiggle and doesn’t make the first guy miss. His hands are pretty good and if he can stay healthy could push Avant a little.

I wonder what Sinorice Moss can do in Philadelphia. In New York they run an extremely complex system where the receivers read the defense and adjust their routes accordingly. Now I’m recalling that Sinorice Moss is not the smartest guy so maybe New York was just a bad fit. I know that Andy Reid utilizes small speedsters very well so long as they work hard and know what to do. I know that Andy Reid uses DeSean Jackson in a very unique way, Andy Reid has turned DeSean Jackson into a Tampa-2 world beater by moving DeSean around and getting him matched up with linebackers and safeties. And obviously, Andy Reid loves to send his receivers deep.
Pull up an old Sinorice Moss scouting report and you’ll notice that it sounds eerily similar to what DeSean Jackson is today.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historical/417361
Positives: Shows explosiveness and a quick first step to easily gain advantage on the defender … Has above average flexibility, balance, body control and change of direction agility, to go with a fluid, natural running motion … Conscientious worker in the training room and in practices … Runs precise routes, staying at the low pad level needed to generate a burst in and out of his breaks … Shows good field alertness, doing a nice job of keeping his feet in bounds along the sidelines … His quickness out of his breaks allow him to separate from defenders and immediately uncover … Maintains concentration on the ball in flight, doing a good job of adjusting his body to look the ball in … Shows good flexibility in his turning motion and times his leaps to get to the ball at its high point.
Negatives: Shorter and lighter than ideal and his frame has no room for additional growth … Has the speed to separate in the open, but lacks the strength to defeat the press and can be jammed at the line of scrimmage … Best when given a clear lane to run, as he does not have the power or leg drive to break tackles … More of a pester type as a blocker, as he does not have the strong base needed to prevent defenders from running over him when blocking at the line of scrimmage … Hard worker, but lacks production … Gets bounced around quite a bit when trying to work in the slot or over the middle (best served out on the flank and isolated in one-on-one situations).
Sinorice Moss is a freak athlete too, he ran a 4.38 at the combine and at his pro-day he registered a 42" vertical jump, he is a very explosive athlete so Andy Reid just got himself a new toy to work with. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if Sinorice Moss was brought in to compete with Chad Hall. Sinorice is a small compact guy just like Chad Hall and one could imagine that someone with Moss’ compact frame and explosiveness would be a nice player in that Chad Hall role.
Also don’t discount Bobby April’s role in this, Sinorice Moss was a good special teams player at Miami. Moss never really caught on as a returner in New York but he was a good returner at Miami and Moss was even used often on special teams coverage units.
I think this is an under the radar sort of move and Sinorice Moss could end up on the Eagles roster if he has a nice showing this off-season. I think Moss could be a good fit for the vertical offense that Andy Reid has put together. Is he going to be great? Probably not, but don’t toss him aside because he is just the kind of player that Andy Reid could make work as a deep threat, X factor, match-up buster kind of reserve receiver. But his entire NFL career has sucked to this point and he has bad hands too so… We’ll see.

Maclin was a great returner in college too. Now, he’s skerd. Maybe Moss just can’t adjust to the pro game
Since they signed him, we might as well hope for the best,
but that would not stop me from looking at another KR prospect. We need someone to do the job.
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
thats just the point
He will make your team becuz he looks great in preseason. Its his disappearing act once the games count that will make him break your heart. Not to mention the injuries….

If Moss can get some legitimate time to play
he might be a good pick up. For whatever collection of reasons, he never got a real look with the Giants.
Everytime he got a chance he got hurt
If Moss can stay healthy he might actually suprise a few people, could challenge Avant for some playing time, good player. never really got a shot in NY

How does that happen?
Did he get injured so often that Coughlin just refused to put up with it, and just looked to other players? I can see a coach getting frustrated by that, but then why not just cut him?
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
We wondered the same
Either play him or cut him, enough of this pussy footing around.
Coughlin, loved his work ethic and from everything I've heard he is a great team guy
Every Preseason he was on the bubble and would come through with a great game and than the regular season would start and he just couldn’t make it on the field regularly. On top of that when an opportunity would come for Moss to step up, he would get hurt with a quad or hamstring injury and miss muliple games.
I like the guy, I think he needs a change, one more thing he is very fast, but he is not very elusive so he stinks returning punts and kickoffs.
by Late for Dinner on Jan 11, 2011 2:20 PM EST up reply actions
Amazing
People are willing to consider this guy a good pickup because he didn’t get enough time, or he didn’t get a fair chance, or he was in the wrong system, whatever — given his proven track record — while they’re eager to rip and give up on Kolb, who’s had much less playihg time and has produced at a much higher level.
Different people, probably.
Takes all kinds, right.
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
Call me dumb but.....
Whats the diff between these guys and the peppers, nnamdis, and other FA? How can they be singed now while we wait til April for the “big” names?
Probably because the “big names” are still property of their team until the new CBA comes out. Moss and co. were FA’s and the roster limit expanded.
Atleast that’s my guess
by BreckBirds20 on Jan 11, 2011 12:31 PM EST up reply actions
Moss was on the Eagles practice squad.
I think the roster limit goes up when you have no more games left.
Namdi is under contract with Oakland until the official date free-agency opens.
