Kurt Coleman, and a Look at The Best Seventh Rounders Ever
KURT COLEMAN, AND A LOOK AT THE BEST SEVENTH ROUNDERS EVER
Of course, I know Coleman may not pan out to be an all-pro or anything, but I wrote this as a fun look at what could be. You never know, right?
http://www.camelclutchblog.com/nfl-seventh-round-draft-picks/
But you know, there are plenty of first round draft picks who, great as they were in college, fail to spark anything in the pros (Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf…), whereas there’s some late round steals that stun the world (Tom Brady, a sixth rounder, being the prime example).
I did a little research of seventh round players going back to the 1980 Draft, just to see if any of them crashed through the ceiling, this perception that seventh rounders can’t and won’t pan out.
You may be surprised to see just who did shatter that glass.

Good list
C James went in the 7th round as he had already signed for a USFL team.
Bo had been picked in the first round by Tampa the year before and played Baseball instead. As noone knew if he wanted to play football or not was why he lasted to the 7th round in the following draft.
That said – you have covered 30 years of the draft which is nearly 900 picks of which 18 became really good players – so roughly a one in 50 chance of getting a steal late in the draft.
We got lucky with Bradshaw 3 years ago no reason why you have not got lucky with Coleman this year.

Houshmandzadeh is a good player and all, but if he’s the second-best player on the list, it’s telling. When Gus Frerotte — seriously, Gus Frerotte — is in the top 15, it’s telling. When only one player on the list has a chance to make the Hall of Fame, it’s telling. Finding elite players in the 7th round is extremely unlikely.
no love for the mighty Moise Fokou
he is the greatest lb ever

The thing about this is that there’s far more UDFAs than 7th rounders, and there’s also no good resources for finding numbers on UDFAs who don’t make teams.
I’m sure there are far more star UDFAs, but I bet their ratio of success would be even worse than that of 7th rounders if you found accurate numbers.
Just wanted to thank you guys for taking time to read my work, as well as those who read my Donovan McNabb’s jersey piece last week. As an aspiring freelance writer, I hope to improve upon my weaker writing and continue to get stronger.
So thanks again.
No problem, good luck with your goal...

Shocker
late round picks tend not to succeed as well as higher draft picks.
That's not what this was about..
It was about the success rate of 7th rounders, and what’s the arbitrary success percentage we can put on Coleman.

Well at least we know..
That no matter what. He will have a better career, and wont disappoint as much as Jamarcus Russell (or in our case Freddie Mitchell)

WOW nice list
Bo Jackson fell that far? Amazing, I didn’t realize that Colston was that late either.
Brian Dawkins for President
There was a reason for Bo’s. He went #1 in 1986, but wouldn’t give up baseball as Tampa Bay wanted him to. He went back into the draft in 1987 and so many others passed on him before Al Davis said “He can play all the goddamn baseball he wants, I want him.”
