The Ages of Every Player in the NFC East to the Exact Day
The charts below can basically be summed up in less than 20 words: The Eagles are really young, the Redskins are really old, and the Cowboys and Giants are somewhere in between.
The following is a breakdown of how old each team in the NFC East will be on opening day, September 12, 2010. The rosters are current as of September 7, 2010, with the updated 53-man cutdowns for each team. It's broken down into the following 15 categories:
(1) Entire Team, minus kickers, punters, and long snappers, (2) Entire Offense, (3) Entire Defense, (4) Offensive Starters, (5) Defensive Starers, (6) Offensive Skill Position Players, (7) Skill Position Starters, (8) Offensive Lines, (9) Offensive Line Starters, (10) Defensive Front Seven (Note - Because the Giants and Eagles run a 4-3 and the Cowboys and Redskins run a 3-4, I decided to compare front sevens rather than break it up by defensive linemen and linebackers, (11) Defensive Front Seven Starters, (12) Secondary, (13) Secondary Starters, (14) Players Over 30 Years of Age, and (15) List of Every Player in the NFC in Order from Oldest to Youngest.
If you'll notice, the Eagles are the youngest team in every category, with exception of the secondary. If I analyzed this entire thing, we'd be looking at something like a 5,000-word post, so feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding my findings as I compiled this data, and I'll be happy to answer them.

Wow
Props for the effort man. I know how hard it is to compile all this stuff. And because I’m a snarky Cowboys fan, I’d like to point out that – for what it’s worth – the Eagles have the oldest crew of specialists (K,P,LS) in the NFC East.
Also, while I’m happy too admit that the Cowboys O-line is getting up there in age, it does look like the O-line is the oldest unit across all four teams. It would seem to me like many other positions (WR, RB etc.) are ‘plug-and-play’ positions for rookies, however the likelihood of an O-lineman starting as a rookie are rather low. It may be one of the few positions where experience can outweigh talent.
Now I’ve got to hunker down and dig through those stats …
by One.Cool.Customer on Sep 7, 2010 5:39 AM EDT reply actions
You’re right about the OL ages, although the Giants and Redskins are also among the top 5 oldest lines in the NFL. Even the Eagles, for that mater, have an OL that’s in the top half of the NFL for age. The NFC East, by far and away have the oldest O Lines in the NFL, and it’s not even close. And yes, you’re correct about the kickers.

We are the only division where every team is having injury issues on the o-line

Dont agree
For the most part, I’d say wr is the least “plug and play” position of those you mentioned. RBs generally play very quickly, but I think o-line generally does as well.

Then let me clarify what I meant with plug-and-play
in 2009 there were 40 O-linemen drafted. 13 (33%) played for 10 or more games in the 2009 season. 23 (58%) played at least one game. The numbers for WR and RB:
Drafted…10 Games…1 Game
WR 34 – 20 (59%) – 29 (85%)
RB 23 – 12 (52%) – 22 (96%)
By plug-and-play I meant that WRs and RBs stood a higher chance seeing the playing field out of college than O-linemen do. At least for 2009 the numbers seem to support that.
by One.Cool.Customer on Sep 7, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions
That doesn’t really work considering a lineman is basically an all or nothing position. You basically play the whole game or you don’t. A WR could see the field in certain spread sets every week but have little to no impact on a game.

some serious dedication and hard work unertaken here.
When you look at say OL starters, skill starters etc which involves a small number of players one vet can distort the average.
I assume you have projected starters based on last season/preseason or your view?
For the Giants do you have Seubert starting as he may be replaced by Andrews. O’Hara may not start the season and Koets would take his place. What is the starting OL for the Eagles?
Is there anyway to show the depth chart you have based the numbers on?
by G Fan in England on Sep 7, 2010 5:56 AM EDT reply actions
For the caregories with some gray area, I based the starters on feedback from people that follow each team more closely.
The Eagles starters are Peters, Herremans, Jackson, Cole, and Justice.
The Giants were a lot more difficult, as you might imagine, since it’s still a bit of a mystery. From the feedback I received, I used Diehl, Seubert, O’Hara, Snee, and McKenzie. I understand Beatty is in the mix as well, and he would significantly bring down the average if he starts. I’m sure there will be disagreements with the players I used, which is to be expected. And God help you all if Andrews is your starter.
by JimmyK on Sep 7, 2010 6:34 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Thanks
I thought you were projecting Wells to be a starter for your OL.
You are likely right on the starting OL for the Giants – but O’Hara may be out and Andrews is the wild card here. I can tell you are very negative towards him but there is a chance you could be wrong – only time will tell.

Lots of G-fans in my neighborhood and they all have this irrational optimism that Shawn is somehow going to put down the bong, stop wasting half of every day on Twitter, and somehow trade his hunger for Olive Garden for the hunger for success that would carry through the pain of the 2-a-days for a few months that would be required to get him back in football shape. The fans living on the island have some excuse for being uninformed about his history – but those within the radius of the Philly media must be just plain delusional.

That is a serious age analysis right there, very good job.
Yeah, is there any chance you could break down who you put down for each position (ie for Eagles skill position starters: McCoy, Jackson, Maclin, etc..)
Regardless of that, job well done. I love seeing those Eagles as the youngest in pretty much all of the categories, makes me think the birds have a very bright future.
child please
by worldphuckinchamps on Sep 7, 2010 6:04 AM EDT reply actions
I agree
that the Eagles appear youngest – but like any excellent pieces of work like this it represents a snapshot on a day.
Your skill players got younger with the trade of McNabb which made the Redskins older as he replaced Campbell. The Giants and Cowboys are happy with their QB’s who are either side of 30 and have several years left in them.
Next yeat the Giants could start JPP and Joseph on the DL and this will lower the average age of the unit by a few years.
These things have a habit of going in cycles so that in four years time the Eagles may well be the oldest team in the division.
What is says to me is that the current Eagles have a window where the other three teams will be replacing vets at key positions. When that window is and how long it will be open for I do not know.

Happy Birthday Eagles, looks like you'll collectively turn 26 on Thursday
One other interesting tidbit is to look at the standard deviation. Standard deviation shows how much variation there is from the "average". The lower the figure for STDDEV, the closer the player ages are to the average age. The higher, the larger the spread from the average.
STDEV for the entire teams (minus K,P,LS): Eagles: 2.5 years, Giants 3.0 years, Cowboys 3.6 years, Redskins 4.1.
What these numbers show is that the Eagles have about 2/3rd of their players (starters and backups, I’m not separating the two) in a tightly defined age bracket 2.5 years to either side of the average age, which would therefore be between 23.5 years and 28.5 years.
At the other extreme, the Redskins have a much higher dispersal of player ages, and about 2/3rd of their players are between 24.2 and 32.3 years old. The wider dispersal is due to the outliers of 30+ year old players, and with 14, the Redskins have more players over 30 than any other team in the NFC.

And the point we can take from this:
There’s a pretty good chance that Dallas and Washington will have a few injuries to key starters this year. Mind you, there’s a good chance of that for every team, but given their ages, they are particularly likely.
Why does this matter? FO showed that last year, Dallas benefitted from exceptionally good luck when it comes to injuries (one could argue that paved the way for their remarkable second half surge last year). What will happen if these same aging starters start to go down with season ending injuries, or with smaller nagging injuries which limit their abilities? The same thing which generally happens to teams, they will falter and fade.
If Dallas stays healthy, they’ll likely make the playoffs pretty easily. But that’s a pretty big if.

Good luck?
But good luck doesn’t have to do anything to do with injuries!
Nonsense!
(Sarcasm detection should be ON).
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
NICE WORK BUT
this means nothing if anything we have less experience than any other team in the nfc east big deal . when was it good to be young and dumb no young team has ever won a super bowl so . we got a jump on other teams rebuilding im not excited
Keep in mind that of the 22 starters on the Eagles, there were only 4 (Kolb, Hobbs, Graham, and Allen) that didn’t start the majority of the games last year. Of those 4, Kolb started 2, and Hobbs was 4-year starter in New England before he came to Philly. And we can probably both agree that Graham and Allen are upgrades over the players that manned their positions last year, right?
There’s youth, no question… but there’s also more experience than the collective age of this team might suggest.
And that's the point
over which I get giddy. If Kolb is good, even just average NFL starter good (which is pretty darn good, mind you), then this team has a huuuuuuge upside and a pretty big window. Here’s hoping!

First of all,
I give you major kudos on all the work you do on these posts, JimmyK. They always make for a great read in the morning.
Second of all, I feel like I remember one of your posts about age and the offensive line saying that there seems to be a huge drop-off for offensive lineman right about the 30 years old mark. Seeing that the average age of the Cowboys O-Line starts is basically 32 years old makes me think (hope?) that they’ll experience the same kind of injury problems we had last year. Also, I don’t think they have very good depth on the O-Line (I may be completely wrong, but that’s my general impression), so I think it could cause them problems not only dealing with injuries, but in the next few years when their linemen get too old to play.
If the Eagles can stay healthy on the O Line, I think they have a great shot at winning the division.
R.I.P. JJ (7/28/09)
Thanks...
Here it is… http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2010/5/2/1454582/age-and-the-ol-why-the-2010
I don’t necessarily think there’s a big dropoff at 30, but if you’ll notice on that post, I listed all the projected starters (back in May, so it’s somewhat dated now) in the NFL, and at the time there wasn’t a single one that was even 35 years old. (Jeff Saturday of Indy has since turned 35). My thinking is that the 4 Cowboys starters that will be 32 by the end of the season may be right in that prime area where you start to see some decline in their play. Combine that with their lack of depth along the OL, and you’re taking about a potential season killer if they don’t play well or sustain an injury or two.
Yeah, that's the one I meant.
And that’s about the way I look at it, too. I’m not too sure why so many people take it as a given that the Cowboys are going to take the NFC East. The way I look at it, this is one of the more open divisions. You can make a pretty good case for the Cowboys, Eagles, or Giants winning it.

Funny that with all that youth...
How much depends on the health of two of our thirty year olds. If Jackson isn’t right I feel sorry for Kolb. As much as I like Coleman if Mikell goes down we could be in serious touble.

There are a few philisophical questions here. Shouldn’t ‘days on earth’ start from conception? And what about after death? Then you’re technically still on earth, right? But judging by the amount of effort Jimmy puts in, its probably been taken into account through a newly discovered formula. Thanks man, great stuff.

I’d be very curious to know how age correlates with success.
Having said that… excellent post, Jimmy. The future looks bright for this team. But the bottom line is Kevin Kolb holds the keys to the ship. If he’s anything worse than above average, then we’re in trouble.

I was wondering if you could correlate weight, height and shoe size to the previous 10 years of superbowl winners as well.

Source of the raw data?
Ever since your original O-Line post, I have been having a debate with a good friend who is a die-hard Patriots fan. He had 2 counter arguments that I found unconvincing:
1) There is a difference between good-old and bad-old (i.e., youth and vigor vs experience and feel for the game)
2) It made no sense to look at averages for off-season rosters given the propensity of many teams to dump their over-the-hill gang members only after giving them a spring/summer of recuperation and a shot at one more season in training camp
Question 1 we probably won’t settle unless we did a weighted probability function of where the vigor/experience crossover point is by position, and then do a negative-weighted deviation score on either side of that line. Clearly not compatible with anyone who is also holding down a job.
Question 2, though, I’d love to settle (how much did age stats shift between the original article(s) and the cut-down rosters) – can you point me at a source of player birthdays, or do you have to look them up one by one in player bios?
You could just count backwards and use the “days on earth” column. Don’t forget leap years.

I assume you’re referring to the OL piece? If so, I only did the OL starters for the that one, and I believe the only change was that I had William Beatty starting at RT for the Giants over Kareem McKenzie. That shifted the average age of the Giants’ OL starters dramatically.
And no. There aren’t any sources of player birthdays that I’m aware of. I looked them all up individually.
Player birthdays
For last year’s roster, profootballreference has the roster lists with birthdays. Here’s an example. This year’s roster will be available come after week one is in the books.
