So seriously, how good will Kolb be?

I've been trying to write my analysis of the Eagles season for a while now, and I've given it up for one reason: I can't get a feel for Kolb.  Based on my studies, I'm confident we'll have a top 10 defense, top 10 skill players, even a better than average OL.  But all that is scrapped because I just don't know how Kolb will be.

After that I looked everywhere I could.  Football Outsiders seems to be hedging their bets.  ESPN has no answer.  The serious/comical Bill Simmons called him the first ever over/under/overrated QB in history to have never been the #1 guy.  I'm at a loss.

So now I turn to you, the BGN bloggers and posters.  What do we have with Kevin Kolb?  I see his absolute upside being very good indeed, maybe a poor man's Drew Brees or Joe Montana.  But then I remind myself that those guys don't exactly grow on trees, and the difference between a good NFL QB and a terrible one just isn't obvious until they start playing a few games.  On a downside, the NFL is littered with good college system guys who never transitioned to a successful NFL carreer.

Help me out, everyone.  On a scale of 1-10, 1 being Tim Couch, and 10 being Drew Brees, who is Kevin Kolb?

The problem is..

You can’t really answer the question right now. You can hope he’s great, cling to your love of McNabb and say he’ll be awful or fall somewhere in the middle — but it’s all a guess for anyone.

For me personally, Andy Reid has shown during his coaching career to have an eye for good quarterbacks, so I’ll take it on faith that the big guy knows what he’s doing with Kolb.

It's a hard question.

Basically, a QB needs four things to be successful:

- Adequate physical tools

- The respect of his teammates

- Good game-day decisions/good knowledge of his offense

- Testicular fortitude

Kolb for sure has the first two. We won’t actually know anything concereteabout our new QB until after this season.

I feel that he will be around an 8.

Never considered one of the two or three best QBs in the NFL, but will fall somewhere into the category below that. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is great. Having a QB in that category keeps your offense afloat or even dangerous and generally keeps you in the playoff hunt at the very least.

He’s Dan Marino with a fistful of Super Bowl rings when he retires, plus he’ll build his armstrength to the Jamarcus Russel level, and be able to throw 75 yards from his knees, only with the pinpoint accuracy and timing of Joe Montana.

He’ll be the consensus greatest of all time, within the next two seasons.

Nope.

You will find out in 9 days. If he can play well against Green Bay, he can play well against anyone. I saw some good things from him in the pre-season and I saw some bad things. It’s really hard to guess right now. I’m gonna say he will be an 82-88 QB rating type of quarterback for this year.

by Route36 on Sep 3, 2010 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

I had him between 6-7, but went with 7. He’s got the chance ot be very good, and its possible that he’s the next Manning or Brees (Brees is the hot QB now but I don’t understand how people think he’s better than Peyton. And I hate Peyton Manning), but he could also be the next Couch. We don’t know, but my guess is Rivers-esque, without the whiny nature of a little bitch.

Um, Brees over last two years have more yardage, more touchdowns and more playoff wins than Manning. Plus he just won the last Super Bowl over Manning. There’s a pretty good argument for Brees over Manning.

Yes, but at least the Saints have some sort of running game and defense to help Brees out a bit. The Colts without Peyton Manning are at best a 5-win team. The Saints without Brees are still probably a 7-8 win team. I also believe that Manning has less weapons than Brees. Talking RBs, I would take the Thomas-Bush duo over Addai-Brown any day. And maybe others disagree, but I think Peyton’s WRs are more of a product of his ability than great receivers.

I suppose I worded that wrong; I see the argument, but when you compare the players in-game (rather than on paper) it seems clear to me that Manning is the better QB. In fact I’d venture to say that he’s the best QB of all time. I like Brees much better than Manning, so this isn’t a bias thing. I just think that Peyton has separated himself from every other QB in the league.

Yes, but at least the Saints have some sort of running game and defense to help Brees out a bit.

It’s pretty obvious that Saints have better running game than Colts, but defense-wise…

2009 Colts’ Defense
Total Defense: 18th in NFL
Passing: 14th in NFL
Rushing: 24th in NFL
Scoring: 8th in NFL

2009 Saints’ Defense:
Total defense: 25th in NFL
Passing: 26th in NFL
Rushing: 21th in NFL
Scoring: 20th in NFL

The Colts without Peyton Manning are at best a 5-win team. The Saints without Brees are still probably a 7-8 win team.

Meh. Colts’ defense gets way too bad of press. Usually with a 5 win team, both offense and defense sucks. If Peyton goes down, offense would be bad, but there’s a good chance a defense that ranked 8th, 7th, and 1th in scoring defense last three years could carry the colts to 7-8 wins season.

And maybe others disagree, but I think Peyton’s WRs are more of a product of his ability than great receivers.

But Peyton had great receivers. Marvin Harrison is a future HOFer and if Reggie Wayne keep his career up, he may wind up in HOF. Brees never had good receiver like those two.

I’m pretty sure I could be wrong (I do not feel like looking up 13 years worth of Colts receivers) but Peyton Manning had a 1,000 yard receiver every year he was in the league, including three in ’04. In ’08 when Brees threw for 5,000 yards, he had zero 1,000 yard receiver.

In fact I’d venture to say that he’s the best QB of all time.

He’s top-10 best of all time, but I really hope the best QB of all time have a playoff record better than 9-9. On top of my head, I would take Bart Starr, Joe Montana, and Johnny Unitas over Manning. Maybe Tom Brady too, but I always flip-flop on who’s better between those two.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Imp on Sep 4, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I see all of your points, but I still think that a) Even Wayne and Harrison would have been good (not great) on other teams, but besides that he hasn’t had WRs; and b) He’s the best QB ever because he’s the hardest to gameplan against. he changes his game faster than opposing defensive coordinators can.

Also, Brees in the past few years of success has had Colston and Meachem, who I think are both very good WRs on their own accord. But its a bit of a wash on WRs because there’s no objective way to test it.

a) Meh, totally subjective whether you think so or not. They haven’t played with any other QBs, so it is really hard to show if Peyton “made” them or not. b) Not that hard. Throw a good 3-4 defense at them – he hates them. Out of Peyton’s 9 career playoff loses, 5 of them came when playing against a 3-4 defense (Saints played a 3-4 in Super Bowl, couple loses to the Chargers, and bunch of loses to the Patriots).

Man, I totally forgot about Colston. He is very good, I just wouldn’t call him a future HOF like Wayne or Harrison. Meachem only been in the league for three years and just over 1,000 career receiving yards, so he’s not that good.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Small correction – two loses to Patriots, one to Steelers as well.

Meachem made big strides last year, he was very good. But I agree, completely subjective. I just think that Manning, because of how good he has been for so long, is better than Brees. I love Brees, don’t get me wrong. I think Manning is a douchebag, and i’d even venture to say i’d rather have Brees than Manning for that reason. But I still think Peyton is better. Either way you can’t go wrong. Just our opinions.

Peyton

has had the better seasons over his career though

Brees had two great years and thats good for him

but Peyton is always doing his thing and because of him the colts have basically been a shoe in to get at least 10 wins a season and a playoff berth

Its about the supporting cast and the grooming

So I’m new here and this is my first comment so take it for what its worth but, I think Kolb has a great shot at being a top tier QB in the next few years for quite a few reasons. First, he has the benefit of a great supporting cast around him. With Jackson, Maclin, Avant and Celek, he the best set of pass catchers I can remember suiting up for our beloved eagles. Second, he has had the luxury of learning the offense for 3 years, which guys like Tim Couch, David Carr, and Kyle Boller never had. Think Rodgers and Young…Lastly, the guy has been successful at every level, not just on talent but because he understands the game and puts in the work. He is a coaches son and understands how to prepare for a game. Granted, none of this will matter if the O-line can’t get it together and give him some time, or Maclin doesn’t stop fumbling, or Shady doesn’t step up and give us some semblance of a running game when we do decide not to pass. That being said, this year might not be great but by next year I expect big things.

I think the better question should be...

How good will Kevin Kolb be with no running game, a shitty offensive line, and taking a lot of hits because the defense knows your passing most of the time ?
A young QB needs a running game…ANY young QB even if its Peyton Manning.

Jeff Garcia hopefully

He’s PERFECT for the WCO.. Smart, quick decisions, mobile enough to elude defenders, gets fired up.. LOVED Jeff Garcia

Here's the thing

with Kolb I think we get a few things:

- Accurate Passer
- Fiery Leader
- Guy who can get the 1st with his legs but not much more
- Somebody who can extend the play

With Kolb we lose some things:

- Mobility
- Experience

So far I take what were gaining and have it outweighing the rest.. Were also getting a QB who mirrors the city he plays for perfectly within his attitude, and demands the same things of himself that his fans demand of him.. Then add to the fact that he’s already the Leader on this team and all the Weapons he’s got and I really feel like we got a Player who’s going to do great things..

NO need to compare him to anybody really, he’s going to be one others are compared to for a long long time.

Thoughts:
“Capital letters were always the best way of dealing with things you didn’t have a good answer to.” -D. Adams

Really, I tend to think if Kolb should be compared to any quarterback… his demeanor, skill set, and supporting cast makes him, in my mind, most akin to Tom Brady. Football “grooming” and coaching aside. And I fuckin’ hate the Pats, don’t get me wrong, but I’m consistently impressed with his work. But yeah… that’s how I’ve always felt about the “what kind of QB will Kolb be” situation.

The upshot is, Kolb’s already married so he won’t have famous-girlfriend issues. Kolb’s got a coach who (we think) can coach QB’s. Also, Kolb will constantly have to defend liking the Cowboys from his childhood, though reporters should have stopped bringing it up months ago.

Mobility

Don’t think we lose all that much mobility. If you look at his college highlights, a lot of good plays came while he was on the run. He’s also looked more mobile than most NFL QBs in the preseason.

The only thing I’m worried about is how he handles adversity. You saw that pick he threw out of frustration at KC. If he can learn to control that, he’ll be above average. If not, then the jury’s still out.

No, I'm talking about the 40 yard runs McNabb would give us from time to time, the

ability to run for much much more than a 1st down, that threat that every Defense hates…

I said he’s mobile, he extends plays but in a Jeff Garcia type of way…

I'm going with none of the above

He’ll be Kevin Kolb…

and we don’t really know what that is right now.

I think the kid has potential…I like that he has a chance, cuz I believe he’ll be good. But could he suck, and could I be wrong. Yeah, I don’t think that’ll be the case, but weirder things have happened

Kolb...

To judge Kolb on this year’s performance is totally unfair to him. This year, IMO, he’s going to look really good, AND he’s gonna look really bad.

The Eagles won’t win next week, but it won’t be Kolb’s fault. In fact, I won’t blame Kolb for very many losses. Like someone said earlier, he simply needs experience.

Unfortunately, many fans will be impatient this year. They have been used to 10 wins and playoff wins. We won’t get there this year.

Bottom line: I’m sure Kolb will be a good QB at some point, but not this year. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see.

Win and win some more...
