NFL Roster Cuts: Predicting Which Eagles Won't Make The Cut

The Eagles have completed their preseason and now have until Saturday to trim their roster to 53. Here's who I think doesn't make the cut. Some are because I think they don't deserve to make the roster and other are just gut feelings as to what I think the Eagles will do.

A.Q. Shipley, Jeraill McCuller, Fenuki Tupou, Cornelius Ingram, Nate Lawrie, Chad Hall, Jordan Norwood, Hank Baskett, J.J. Arrington, Martell Mallett, Boo Robinson, Jeff Owens, Eric Moncur, Pannel Egboh, Jamar Chaney, Geoffrey Pope, David Pender, Jorrick Calvin, Anthony Scirrotto, Quintin Demps, King Dunlap, Dobson Collins.

Also, Victor Abiamiri is currently on the PUP list. As I understand it, players on the PUP list do count against the roster in preseason but don't count against the 53 man roster in the regular season. So I Abiamiri is left on the pup list, the Eagles have one less cut to make and one of the guys on my list could be saved. Of course, Abiamiri could just be cut outright and any of these guys could magically come down with a "season ending injury" and be stashed on IR for the season.

Demps over Macho?

Hmm, dunno if I agree with that one. Admittedly, both looked inferior to Kurt Coleman and Macho never stood out at corner, but Demps, I presume, provides more for special teams, no? Do you think Macho stays because he’s a S/CB hybrid or because they won’t give up on a 2nd-year player?

I can’t argue any of your picks and they are all reasonable.

I wish we had longer looks at Calvin and Egboh.

So who makes the practice squad?

by 999 on Sep 3, 2010 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

Based on the list

I’m thinking they’d want to keep Owens, Calvin, Chaney, Moncur, McCuller or Tupou, Mallet, Ship, and Pender or WR TBA.

I’d put Ingram on this list, but (a) I’m holding out hope he makes the 53, and (b) he won’t make it through waivers

by DLawrence55 on Sep 3, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

After last night, I think I'm with you on Demps...

He was running with the 3’s in the second half (with Macho working with the 2’s), and he wasn’t returning kicks. Bad, bad sign for Demps. Throw in the fact that McDermott started a 5th round rookie that had never played safety his entire life over Demps last year, and I just don’t think McDermott trusts Demps.

And it has nothing to do with how Demps played in camp or the preseason – I actually thought Demps was good. I assume this is one of your “gut feeling” cuts, and I think I agree.

by JimmyK on Sep 3, 2010 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah that was a gut feeling. Honestly I could easily see either guy going, but i think macho is the higher character and harder working guy. So that’s why I’m guessing he might have the edge.

I just don’t think Demps has been very savvy or smart since he’s come into the league.
I honestly thought he was done after that super late hit to Warner in the playoffs, among other dumb penalties. oh. and getting beat by Larry Fitzgerald badly.

Then he acts like a baby last year saying he was irritated that he wasn’t declared the starter in the preseason. Not the guy I want playing safety because he just doesn’t get it.
Nice TD return his first year, but his safety play was bad enough he was demoted behind Macho.

by JGCarraway on Sep 3, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t put the Fitz reception on Demps at all. For one, that play took like 3 minutes. How long can you cover the best WR in the Universe (at the time)? He slipped, Fitz made the catch, and that was that. I mean, if he were burned by freaking Joe Jurevicius like Blaine Bishop back in the day, it’s a different story. But I can forgive Demps there.

But you’re absolutely right about the Warner hit, which was among the dumbest plays I’ve ever seen in a professional football game. Demps just seems like a selfish player to me. There had to have been that slight thought in the back of his head that said “This is going to hurt the team” before the Warner cheap-shot, and he did it anyway. Unacceptable.

by JimmyK on Sep 3, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Well

not in his defense, but if Warner had actually gotten hurt, we might’ve been looking at a Super Bowl.

by JGCarraway on Sep 3, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

It been two years

so I don’t remember that well, but did that cheap shot against Warner have an effect on the game? Didn’t the Cardinals score a touchdown on that play?

Also I didn’t mind giving up the TD to Fitz, but I hated the fact that he got run over by Hightower on the game winning TD.

I am kind of hoping Baskett and Washington make the team. That said if I had to pick one it would most definitely be Washington, Baskett’s value is not what it used to be because Cooper can be the jump ball in the red zone guy.

I wish we had Calvin for our whole preseason. He seemed to be the return man that we all hoped Hall would be. I would have liked to have seen him in coverage over several games.

by captain nodar on Sep 3, 2010 9:56 AM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure Tracy white makes the team

Over Chaney. Granted Chaney hasn’t been great this preseason but I haven’t heard a single thing about white.

Let's get it Birds.

by homestar2281 on Sep 3, 2010 10:15 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed...

From what I’ve read they like Chaney and they probably couldn’t get him on the PS. If a injury were to happen you could just re-sign White most likely.

by The Legend on Sep 3, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s a good point, and one I hadn’t thought of. The Eagles signed White on July 31st, when camp had already started. It’s not like teams are beating down his door to come play for them. I think White’s 2 options are probably “Eagles,” or “Wait for a call from the Eagles.”

by JimmyK on Sep 3, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Demps and Macho are both disgracefully bad.

But Hanson may be even worse. I wasn’t joking when I said this could be the worst secondary in football.

But am I the only one with reservations this year about Q? And I have visions of wide receivers blowing by Hobbs all day.

by EvilBanner on Sep 3, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Mikell is as solid a player as we have on this defense. He’s a notch below Cole and Bradley as far as guys the Eagles absolutely must have out on the field.

Disclaimer – Mikell is my favorite player, so take that for what it’s worth.

by JimmyK on Sep 3, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Quintin Mikell is one of the best strong safeties in the league(with a half decent FS), EB.

by Route36 on Sep 3, 2010 11:45 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't disagree with this.

But he wasn’t so hot last season. Now, there is the caveat about the half-decent FS. I think Nate Allen will be a stud, so that will solve that problem. But I really don’t have any confidence in any of the backup or nickel guys. They all suck.

You have to remember...

that last year, Mikell was basically trying to play both SS and FS because all the other options next to him sucked dick.

by DickMuffin on Sep 3, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Trevard Lindley is looking to be starting material. Hanson is serviceable in the nickel. Coleman is also very promising.

by Route36 on Sep 3, 2010 1:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

As much as I swear by Lawlor

I remember him ripping the Lindley pick soundly. The pick that basically dropped the draft a grade in his opinion. I’d love to hear what he says about him now.

by DLawrence55 on Sep 3, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanson really doesn’t look like a nickel back any more, IMO. Patterson may be okay there, but I think Lindley could be the guy by midseason.

I agree with you on Hanson….but to say the Eagles one or the worst secondary in football is just plain idiotic. Im all for people having opinions but sometimes your bitterness is senseless and just plain ignorant….I hope you were joking….

First of all....

I never put any specific praise on either of those guys. As a group the Eagles have a very good secondary. Ellis Hobbs STARTED with Samuel (AKA BallHawk; AKA Pro Bowler) on a team that won 18 straight games 3 seasons ago. What makes you say that he cant do the same in this defense? Wouldnt you think that if he was that bad then, that teams would have thrown to his side every down? For someone who thinks he sounds smart just by the way he writes, you almost never have any logic to your arguments….Your just plain bitter man….and if you apply the same bitterness to your life that you do on this site, you must live in a sad world.

He turns 30 in September, but he’s only been a starter in the NFL for 3 full seasons. Plenty left in the tank. I suspect he isn’t going anywhere for a while.

Alll of a sudden our safeties situation looks a lot better....

It may have taken a combination of 2/3 players to fill a void ( #20), but it’s starting to look like they’re on the right path…..

I bet they offer him either IR or his release.

I wonder what will actually happen.

They may try to trade him....

Although teams may just wait and see what happens with him.

He still has so much potential, I doubt he will want to return to IR. Its a shame the Eagles cant really keep him (barring some miracle)

I’m not so sure he’ll even be plucked off the practice squad if the Eagles tried to go that route.

Did they even call his number?

What surprised me was that we didn’t see more of Ingram or Harbor in the 2nd half last night. They gave Lawrie a couple of shots, and his fumble was unlucky for him – a good catch and then into a situation where you had 2 guys holding him up, and because he had just pivoted on his left hand to get some YAC, he had only 1 arm on the ball against a third guy who could pull and strip with both arms. Bummer of a way to lose your job, but that probably killed his chances.

Still – he seemed to get a better shot at making the team than Ingram, who didn’t seem to even get a look at the ball. From where I was in the stands last night it wasn’t always clear when he was in the game, and I don’t know how often he stayed in to block — was his route-running so bad that they never threw to him? Or had the coaches already decided that he was headed to IR with the knee swelling and they wanted the reps to compare Harbor and Lawrie?

On the other hand – is it possible that the decision on who to keep will be based more on blocking performance last night than on receiving? Would have to go back to some non-network isolation video to take a view on that…

by PrincetonGreen on Sep 3, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Am I the only one

that believes that players that got a lot of playing time last night are the ones in the hot seat? I think Hank is making this team, and Washington and Cooper (moreso Washington) were out there to try to build their stock up a little bit more. Same goes with Demps. Macho sucks and he proved he couldn’t play CB this offseason. They had him running with the 2’s to see if he was still garbage at safety. And he was. Demps makes it over him for sure.

by Team Serbia on Sep 3, 2010 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

I certainly hope so

He looked great last night – besides the big reception, saw him jack up a couple of people on KRs. I think he was in the game on the same rationale as Vick – can use a few reps, but didn’t need to play all that much because he is on the team. I couldn’t believe they left Dobson Collins in there so long, after he removed all doubt about his ability to play CB. Maybe that was just to test Demps on the rotation? So agree completely with Serbia that some guys who played alot are the ones who the FO felt needed to give them a reason to change their minds – but not the same reasoning for everyone who was out there – and unsure what it means for those who didn’t seem to be out there much (see Ingram question above)

Basket to the Skins

I can see a Basket/MacNabb reunion in the near future. With all the WR issues they have down there. I think that’s where he ends up. He’ll be on some team’s squad this year if not here, so why not with Donny?

by ErickW on Sep 3, 2010 1:23 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Who do you think the Eagles will sign from the other teams?

Possibilities:

Brandon Gibson
Chase Coffman
Patrick Crayton
Travis Beckum
Jay Alford
Rocky Bernard
Bryan Kehl

Beckum is a candidate to get cut? Really? I think the Giants will want to keep him. But he did have a serious knee injury, so if he hits the streets we’ll be all over that. Coffman had season ending surgery last year on his foot, so I could see us grabbing him, too.

Gibson? Why would the Rams let him go, especially with Avery out for the year. Is he doing shitty in the preseason?
