Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

There's no excuses, but at the same time I want everyone to know we're going to right the ship. We played a couple good offenses. I don't care what anyone said, that's a Lions team that is going to beat some teams. At the end of the day, we're going to get everything together. We're going to get better and I promise you it's going to be a different defense this week.

Quintin Mikell makes "The Promise"
Let's just hope that the rest of the defense can deliver on Sunday.

I love the accountability

We have some really good leaders on this team. Being able to recognize the mistakes being made and admit them is a really awesome thing to do. Now lets just hope he holds that promise.

32nd in points allowed on defense

I’d hope that the players (and McDermott) would hold some accountability for that.

You are surely missed off the football field, Jim, but you have no idea how much we all miss seeing you on those sidelines every Sunday.

Not as bad as it sounds

Tied 1st in the league for INTs (4)
Tied 8th in the league in sacks (5)
12th in the league for defense on pass PCT (57.9)

We are by no means the 32nd defense in the NFL. We gave up 3 big plays in two weeks and that skews the numbers off big time. Whereas some defenses aren’t covering receivers, giving up big yards all the time and aren’t making interceptions or sacks. It’s much harder for those teams to improve than it is for us.

If you take away the J. Best screen and run, nobody would even be questioning our defense. We gave up 2 big plays to their rookie who was shutdown in week 1 by the Bears. We had little tape to watch, nothing to plan against for J. Best. Stuff like that happens in the 1st couple weeks of a season to any caliber defense.

For 20 yards?

His stat line was brutal. He had 2 TDs, but the Bears contained him inside the tackles.

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Sep 24, 2010 2:24 AM EDT up reply actions

yea but he didn’t run all over us either … he only had 78 rushing yards. He had 115 yards in screen passes (19, 75, and 21) plus passes in the flat for 17, 9 and 12 yards.

As far as running save for the 33 yarder he broke we held him to 2.8 yards a carry.

Thanks for clarifying the stats. I knew we did pretty good besides the 3 big plays, I just didn’t have the stats handy to post them. I think we can be pretty confident in our defense. As a young team, we’ll make mistakes but it’s much easier to fix mistakes then to find talent and players to make the plays as we found out last year.

Not a problem.

I make mistakes just as if not more easily. His 2 TDs are kinda misleading.

Best has been a FAR more effective receiver than rusher.

alright kid i give u credit ur sticking 2 ur guns from my post about being concerned about the Ds shitty play. Im starting 2 feel ur right or least pretty close, i dont see the Jags puttin up more then 10 on us now that it sounds like Mikell is challenging himself ansd the rest of the D. I would love the shutout but u know how the NFL goes, we’ll prolly be beating the hell outta the Jags and they’ll get a late garbage TD.

I just want our D

to prove that they’re good. If we weren’t giving up so many points, our D would be top 10 at least. So if we shut out the Jags, it will even out the stats. Shutting out the Jags is possible especially with MJD not 100%, but you’re right, they’ll probably get a garbage TD

Last year he wasn’t that good because he had to babysit for Macho on just about every play.

Nate Allen’s doing a good job at FS now, though, and it’s freeing up Mikell to actually do his job again.

As Joe said, though, he seems to be playing a lot better this year.

I am NOT worried about this at all

a) In the first half of week 1 our defense looked GREAT!!! I like our secondary minus Hobbs.

b)The only reason why the Lions did even remotely OK was bc of the play of Omar Gaither. I think our defense let up a little too when we built that big lead.

Let me say this. A defense can be ELITE with just a strong pass rush. Trent Cole, a fresh Juqua Parker, and a learning Brandon Graham seem to be providing a really good push. The Giants won a SB with a pass rush and are one of the worst teams in the NFL without it. Get after the QB and you will have a strong defense no matter who is back there.

One match up we must look for is Maurice JD vs our LBs..U think the Jags didnt take notice what Best did to them? They will try and get our LBs lined up with MJD — same with their TE.

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Sep 23, 2010 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed on both counts.

…except for the bit about a strong pass rush making a defense elite. Few people would characterize Indy’s defense as elite the past few years (even though they looked it on Sunday night, complements of the Giants, lol) and they’ve got Mathis and Freeney, probably the best pass-rush duo in the league. It still take some other parts to at least be competent or poor playcalling on the other side of the ball for that to make an elite defense.

Gaither just needs to go in my opinion. I’m sure he’s good as an outside backer, but I’d really like to see at least a little depth at MIKE, given Stew’s recent problems with staying healthy. Clayton looks promising, so let’s hoping he gets there soon.

by FlyEagles15 on Sep 24, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree 100% with that, then. If you can’t get pressure on a passer with a solid front four, your D really has a negligible chance of holding anyone for a low score. I remember last year when our D played the Saints and we got no pressure with the front 4. It was either send more guys and let Drew Brees carve us up on man coverage or don’t and let him carve us up with all the time in the world.

So it’s more like without a good pass rush, there is no elite defense.

R.I.P. JJ (7/28/09)

by Carolina Iggle on Sep 24, 2010 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

The problem is that they really don't have the potential for an elite pass rush.

- Trent Cole is an elite run stopper but only an above-average pass rusher.

- None of the DTs (Laws, Patterson, Bunkley) are capable of generating a pass rush.

- Graham is a rookie and is struggling like one. Shows some flashes but needs to learn ALOT about playing on the NFL level. Maybe he’ll develop into something eventually, but definitely not this year.

- Parker is surprisingly the best pass-rusher so far this season for the Eagles, but he’s limited in his effectiveness.

Parker and Cole are the only two capable of creating a consistent pass rush at this point, but they are not even close to being as good as guys like Ware, Freeney, Mathis, Harrison, etc.

by MyronBales on Sep 24, 2010 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

what

r u talking about… cole has some of the most sacks and plays behind the los out of all the defensive ends in the past few years..hes top 5

none of the DTs besides laws are asked to rush the passer. Both Graham and laws have done a good job of making some noise…the most you could ask from a rookie and a back up DT at least…

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Sep 24, 2010 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm not sure how you say Trent Cole is only an above-average pass rusher.

He gets double-teamed all the time on passing downs and STILL puts up top-5 sack numbers. The dude is an absolute monster. Sure he doesn’t get hyped up in the media, but that’s just because the dude doesn’t run his mouth (love that about him, by the way, he just gets it done without making a fool of himself). Plus they just about all have their heads up their asses anyway.

Trent Cole is an absolute baller.

DTs aren’t really a big part of pass rushing, anyway. The only DTs you really hear about in pass rushing are the Williamses, and that’s because they’re both Top 5 in the league. The fact that Graham and Laws are getting fairly good pressure from that position is really great.

One little thing I'd add...

and if Gaither stays on the sideline.

With a red-hot QB with all these weapons, a fired-up defense, and no Gaither making our LBs embarrass us? I agree, though. Could be a great year.

Lots of ifs, though, and it’s all contingent on staying absolutely healthy, just like any other season for any other team. Except the Rams and the Bills, they’re just waiting for the Draft to come around again. Lol.

D Line has looked really good thus far, as a unit.

We got good, consistent pressure on both teams thus far with our Front 4. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Those LBs really do need to step it up. I think with Gaither back on the sideline it’ll make a big difference, though.

R.I.P. JJ (7/28/09)

by Carolina Iggle on Sep 24, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Line's been fine

Cole has been good, Parker excellent and Laws and Graham have been pretty good with applying pressure from the interior when Bunkley and Patterson aren’t in there stopping the run. Mikell has returned to form, mostly because Nate Allen has picked it right up, I don’t really have any qualms with Asanti or Hobbs really besides getting burnt that one time. It’s the linebackers that need help and having Stew back should restore order and generally make everyone a little better.

Detroit was playing with their back-up QB(Shaun Hill…), rookie RB who had been held to 20 carries for 20 yards against Chicago the previous week. That Detroit team we played should NOT have scored 30 points on us.

The secondary gave up 335 yards, and 2 td’s to SHAUN HILL. Am i the only one who doesnt think that it was the opposing Ofeense being good as much as our “D” being lit up.

by Mr. Laker on Sep 24, 2010 4:26 AM EDT reply actions

exactly...........

i said the same thing in a post earlier in the week, the fact that we allowed 32 points to a Shaun Hill led offense and a Rookie RB ( a good one at that but still inexcusable) sent up some red flags 2 me. The good thing is that they got the stop when they needed it. I think the things going wrong on defense are very fixable , its not that our Defense doesnt have the talent to play good because we have a ton of talent its undisciplined and i think the screws will be tightned for the Jag game.

by goldenbird09 on Sep 24, 2010 7:14 AM EDT up reply actions

It was our D being lit up, no question.

BUT I think that’s due in a very, very large part to Gaither. He misred plays, missed tackles, and was generally a bum against the run in the first half. Once they got that established they were able to free things up over the middle for their Tight Ends. Their WRs were shut down, so our secondary is good. And if you look back to last week when we had Big Stew in, we went almost an entire half (4:44 left in the half is when he went down), Green Bay’s offense only had 3 points on the board. That’s probably the second best offense in the NFC. I’ll take three points in a half by them any day.

You cant blame ALL the struggles on one person. Its not fair, or correct.

Missed tackles, blown assignments, not hitting their gaps, not pressure, and just plain being stupid all factored in to us getting worked by The Lions.

by Mr. Laker on Sep 24, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Not all of them

just a very large amount of them. He’s a very good reason the run got established early and their TEs did well later in the game. Those were what killed us.

R.I.P. JJ (7/28/09)

by Carolina Iggle on Sep 25, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Him, Akeem, Asante, Graham all missed tackles. Our secondary had a bunch of blown coverages, and blown assignments too.

He might have had a tad bit more to do with the loss, but not as big as your making it seem.

by Mr. Laker on Sep 26, 2010 3:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Shaun isn’t really a horrible QB. He’s never really gotten much of a chance to start but he’s been pretty decent when given the opportunity. 25:14 TD:INT ratio, 185 yrds/gm, 61% completion percentage. That’s not terrible for a starter. If you want to make comparisons, Vick (running plus passing) averages 184 yards/gm owns a career 75:52 TD:INT ratio passing and completes 54% of his passes.

Just sayin’.

And Best, well we don’t know what he will be in the league, the Bears also just held the Cowboy’s trio of running backs to just 37 yards rushing combined last week so 20 yards for Best against the Bears might not be a product of who he is, rather who the Bears are. He was a 1st round draft pick this year, so it’s not like we just got run over by a slouch who barely made the team, he looked very good out there, that may have been him, or it may have been us, but he has a lot of potential to be for real.

The Lion’s offense I think it making great strides, hoarding top draft picks for the last few years certainly helps quite a bit. These aren’t the Lions of old, they’re getting better.

our whole d line has looked great

Our whole d line looks really good. Brandon Graham has gotten a lot of pressure from dt position and actually forced one of Allen’s interceptions. Maybe you aren’t watching same games I have. Parker has 2 or 3 sacks in a backup role. Our lbs have been the problem. When stew went out the d fell on its face. Green bay had 3 points before he got hurt. 24 after. Lions RB and tight end lit us up. We need stew to stay healthy. If that happens this is a very solid d.

Q, I want a better defense, not just a different one

Yes, the Lions will beat some teams. But “a good offense”? We don’t know who their #2 WR is even after watching a game against them. The fact is that an offense led by Shaun Hill and a rookie RB scored 32 points on us. Something needs to improve. Q, you are right, no excuses. Get some execution!
