With Vick locked in as the Eagles starter, could Reid and Co. be looking for a trade partner for Kolb?
Remember a couple months ago when Tom Heckert, Browns GM, said he would offer two first rounders for him. Maybe the Eagles will pull the trigger if the offer is right?

Note by JimmyK - Here's what Tom Heckert said about what he would have given up for Kolb earlier this summer.

What about this pisses you off? It doesnt say Eagles looking to trade Kolb, it says other teams are interested in him. Nothing wrong with that.

by Mr. Laker on Sep 22, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

With the way everything so far this year with this team has been handled, just seeing something like this makes you have to think it’s highly possible they are listening to the offers and would be willing.

I smell front office pulling the strings with all of this.

They are not “Pulling strings” and they are insane not to lissen to offers. If they are going to start Vick than having Kolb should be as good as gone.

Not completely sure on that

They may be listening, but I don’t think anyone feels Kafka is ready to be back up just yet. So unless they either sign a solid backup FA or can get one in that trade… real conversation bout this might have to wait. That being said, 2 high picks or one and a kick ass LB / DB.. maybe they have a plan for those extra roster spots they made?

Might as well get some value for the wasted draft pick.

He’s a free agent after next year. He’ll have sat on the bench his whole career, and even if they go back to him as the starter next year, I wonder if he’d sign an extension after being jerked around like this.

by BrianS on Sep 22, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He did, but because of the lack of the new CBA, they were limited with what they could give him, so it was only a one year extension.

Let's just say it's true...

I’m not ready to say this is all part of some mastermind plan, but if we trade Kolb for a 1 or a couple 2’s:

We get rid of McNabb for a 2nd (Nate Allen) and a 3rd or 4th TBD
We get rid of Kolb for… Maybe a pick that turns out to be a better long term QB option, and/or a stud O-lineman?
We keep a much improved and mature Vick for a couple years.

Phone lines are now open…

It's "Kolb"ering time!

It's actually a great job by the FO

If they can turn Kolb in to two 1s or a 1 and a 2..

Vick starts for the next 3 or 4 years while we groom another backup for 3 years..

Where’s the downside except if Kolb turns out to be the next Brady/P Manning/Brees?

And that only matters if Vick DOESN’T win us a SB. If he wins a SB in the next 3 or 4 seasons, he becomes a God and the signing of Vick after his jailtime is the smartest move in the history of the NFL.

Let me first say I’m not a fan of moving Kolb, I feel the FO should have given Kolb at least 4 or 5 games to prove himself before even thinking of naming Vick starter. However, it is sadly, a business first, I wouldn’t blame Kolb one bit for feeling he was given a raw deal. That being said I think this team can be competitive with Vick, however the ONLY way I feel comfortable at all moving Kolb hypothetically would be if A – obviously a ridiculous offer of draft picks from another team ie. Heckert type deal and B – we sign a very solid backup aka a Jeff Garcia type.

On drafting Ryan Mallett, I don’t know about this. Then again, it doesn’t say they are entertaining the offers. But honestly, they would have to be stupid to not at least listen to offers for him.

by macjack09 on Sep 22, 2010 3:45 PM EDT reply actions

wow

Of course teams are interested in kolb.

I had heard, and like usual I’m on my phone so I cannot cite, that kolb is still reids guy, and the decision all along was to start kolb, but it came down from owners saying to start vick.

I had heard from a post on the igglesblog months ago that reid stuck by mcnabb even now. That his benching at halftime last year without warning was because reid was on the phone with laurie who was telling him to play kolb.

I believe the reid/halftime story, and I’m certainly not counting out that reid still wants kolb and the FO is demanding vick start.

So, my point is that just because reid says something, doesn’t mean he’s lying. He just may not know.

And they’d be nuts to not consider a blockbuster trade offer for kolb. If vick is the real deal, I can see kolb being shipped.

2010-11 Predictions:

Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.

I’m not sure who has who’s back but someone was overruled. It’s the only way to explain the 180 done between Monday and Tuesday. Either Andy wanted Kolb and Lurie told him no or Lurie wanted Kolb and Andy finally found a way to convince him. No way this was a mutual decision, it would have been handled better.

If Kolb gets traded

Could a blunder this big by Reid be ignored? He would at least be on the hot seat, and I wouldn’t be surprised (nor sad, at this point) if his job was on the line. He convinced the world Kolb was the way to go, and took a risk trading the franchises best QB (a risk I agreed with, for the record). But pulling the plug this early and if a trade does happen, or if Kolb demands/leaves next offseason, maybe it would be time for Reid to leave.

I wonder if it’s the opposite situation — Reid kept saying Kolb was the starter, because he basically had to ask for Lurie’s permission to make Vick the guy. Remember, Lurie was the man who had to be convinced about Vick to begin with.

That was a possibility, I think I mentioned it wayyy up this thread. One way or another I think there was overruling/convincing that had to occur, this doesn’t appear to have been unanimous decision.

What is Kolb gets traded for as much, or more value than they used to pick him with in the first place, and Vick plays well? If that were to happen how in the world could it be seen as a blunder?

by AZ Eagle on Sep 22, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I’m in the camp that Michael Vick by no means is the future of this team. He’s playing well now, but I need to see more than a game against Detroit to be fully confident with Vick. I will support him obviously and I have nothing against him, but I don’t see him being here next season.

That being said, after everything that has transpired, I can’t see Kolb happy in this situation. I think Reid destroyed him in Philly, and even if he gets back on the field he’ll have to constantly look over his shoulder. That’s not what you want to do to a young QB. I simply can’t see Kolb excelling here.

So if you take those two situations, it is a huge blunder. What is the future of this team? People have been saying that they only care about right now, but that’s not how you run an successful business anywhere. You plan for now, and you plan for the future. Reid scouted and groomed Kolb for 3 years, traded Mcnabb to get Kolb into the starting role, and then half a game into the season you scrap the entire plan? This team is strong now, but it’s built to be a juggernaut in 1-2 years when our young core goes into its prime and we fix the offensive line a little bit. You’re not going to do that with Vick and I can’t see it happening with Kolb anymore, especially by holding him back another year. Vick is potential short term success, and that’s it. If Kolb gets traded, then Reid feels like 3 years worth of groom can be thrown out after one half. That is a blunder.

Note, some of these points are obviously opinions so if you don’t agree with some of them then my reasoning might sound odd, but that’s the way I see it.

But you were FULLY confident in Kolb after the same amount of time????

Theres a difference

We have no idea what Kolb’s ceiling is. Vick has been a career 50% passer who has never thrown more than 3000 yards and has only had 1 season with 20 TD’s.

by Team Serbia on Sep 22, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Vick is a known quantity, he’s never been a great passer and is inconsistent. Kolb is ???, he could be someone we could be very confident in but he wasn’t given that shot. In term of starting time, 2/3 of his starts have been damn impressive though.

Vick is a known quantity

So you both new that Vick would come in and effect the running game against Detroit as he did? You both knew that after 6 Quarters he would have NO INT’S? I guess you both also knew he would come in and play lights out then too?

Here let me tell you this I live in Houston. And Kolb is a known commodity to me.

I can't wait for McNabb and Kolb to win back-to-back Super Bowls on teams that aren't the Eagles.

Maybe they’ll even play each other in the Super Bowl. That would be fun for us.

Watch it happen. Deep down, as an Eagles fan, you know it will.

It has nothing to do with me thinking Kolb is some kind of god.

It has everything to do with the luck and history of the Eagles. It will be just our luck that this happens.

I have already explained multiple times that my opinion is not that Kolb is destined for greatness. My position is that I have not, and you have not btw, seen enough of Kolb to know what he can be or what he is. He could be Bobby Hoying, but he could also be Drew Brees. Both are possibilities, but no one can claim to actually know what is true because Kolb has not been given the real-time experience to show us. He has the following: One bad half (Baltimore), one decent game (Saints), one great game (Chiefs) and 10 bad pass attempts (Green bay). That’s it. That’s jack shit. I can’t glean anything from that and neither can you. So you can go around disingenuously accusing everybody of praising Kolb, but your comments seem to indicate that you are fully confident in Kolb being shitty. That’s bullshit because you haven’t seen enough of him to know that. You can’t have it both ways.

by NOLACuse on Sep 23, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

you have not btw, seen enough of Kolb to

I have seen more of Kolb over the past 6 years than you have of Vick. I got to see Kolb play in college without going to games while sitting on my coach on Saturday.

I never said I have seen enough of Kolb.

That is basically my entire point. Nobody (which includes me) has seen enough of Kolb as a starting NFL QB to truly be able to judge him or know what he can become.

Seeing him play in college is great. That gives you some insight. But there are a lot of players that do one thing in college, but another in the NFL. Some players look good in college, but great in the NFL. Some are the opposite. Some have problems that can be fixed by NFL coaches. So watching him in college is good, but it doesn’t really tell us what he is fully capable of as an NFL QB right now and going forward. Only him playing in the NFL can tell us that at this point.

Im sorry

but if we could trade Kolb for two first round picks or a first and second; and extend Vick, then I am all for this!!!!!!

by SpursEaglesFanSanAntonio on Sep 22, 2010 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

If we trade Kolb I'd hope we find a way to get both a solid offensive lineman and a QB for the future.

Hell, maybe package some picks to move up to grab the top lineman and then take a flier on an injured Case Keenum and see if he can become Vick’s replacement down the road. That could be interesting.

Seriously, if we can get two firsts for Kolb, you gotta take that. But we can’t and we won’t, so let’s what actually happens here.

by NOLACuse on Sep 22, 2010 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

If Heckert does give the Eagles 2 1st round draft picks for Kolb, I have no problem saying “adios Kevin, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” I would do that deal in no time, especially seeing as Cleveland is not going anywhere fast in the NFL.

We are not getting (2) 1st rounders for Kolb. Heckert said that before he was even the GM over there. Doubt we even get (1) 1st rounder with the way Reid allowed things to play out.

by Team Serbia on Sep 22, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Teams in desperation now would pay that much (ie at least 1 1st rounder)

Its only week 3. Enough time for Kolb to go somewhere else, get a good 10+ starts and figure out a new offense.

I don’t think so. Reid doesn’t have very much leverage. He can say what he wants about this move being all due to Vick’s performance, but if a guy is worth a 1st rounder, let alone 2, he wouldn’t be benched. Not to mention the last action Kolb received wasn’t turning heads. Kolb can also walk after this season and sign wherever.

by Team Serbia on Sep 22, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand the point youre making. However, if a team is really desperate at this point in the season, holding on to a #1 pick for a potential QB to build your team around (what are the chances of actually getting one; see Colt McCoy experiment, I know hes not a #1 but still….) may not be the best option. They too want to win sooner rather than later. Kolb is the only QB out there right now that (may other than Leinart) has a few years in an organization, thats still showing potential and that has SOME good game tape to support it. Its not unrealistic to think so.

FLY #7 FLY !!!

by BWestFactor on Sep 22, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Cassel received a 2nd round pick after putting up 4000 yards. Kolb struggled for 2 quarters and Reid demonstrated a complete lack of faith in him by benching him. Cleveland and these types of teams aren’t ready to win now. They can wait until the offseason to offer Kolb a contract which also guarantees the team that he won’t just go elsewhere after this season. In turn, they also have a high first round pick to continue building their team. Either way, my basic point was that if Kolb gets traded, we should start thinking about exporting Reid along with him.

by Team Serbia on Sep 22, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Point taken...but...

Kolb’s contract only expires at the end of 2011, so he’s still with the Eagles next year. Reid’s contract is up in two season (ie his last 2-3 chances at a superbowl). So its hit or miss for him.

Oops, I had Kolb’s contract going till the end of this season. Either way, I don’t think the Eagles will receive any 1st round offers for Kolb but that’s a different debate. Reid sold us a future of success with Kolb. He placed all his eggs into Kolb’s basket, and to pull the rug so prematurely cannot be simply excused.

anyways, reid is playing it smart. im glad there is a market out there for kolb. if the price is right, watch kolb get traded. its not just the fact that mike vick is playing well, but the fact that he has got the support of so many players in the locker room and the FO notices that.

This is not what I want...

But we might as well trade Kolb at this point. If I am him I would never trust Andy again. Fool me once. I’d want out. I’m sorry, but it was two quarters. Two quarters. If it was a few games and I suck then I keep my mouth shut. But two quarters? Sorry.

Andy should trade him now. He made his bed. Time to lay in it.

Go Eagles!

Trust me when i say this

Kolb is not hurt by any means. As a matter of fact I doubt he really wants to go somewhere and start right now any way. Remember how he looked at the feild while Vick pulled his cape out? He looked like DAMN I can’t do that. WTF did I let Andy put me in this mess for?

He wants the hell out of here and soon I bet.

He signed that extension expecting to play, to give the world a shot to see what he was able to do so he could cash in on his next contract. Now he’s on the bench and that next contract is a distant memory. What’s best for him is to leave here and go somewhere we he can start without looking over his shoulder and get that next contract he thinks he deserves.

It’s a business and he wants his, he isn’t getting that shot here.
