Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

A New Standard for the Philadelphia Eagles

I love it.

The gauntlet has been laid. Unreasonable expectations of perfection are all that matters anymore. One bad game and you're demoted. Bad half of QBing and a concussion? To the bench with you. I suspect any Olineman who allows a sack from here on out will not be starting the next week. If Maclin drops a pass, Avant moves up. If Djax screws up a route, he'll be riding the pine. McCoy fumbles? Or can't pick up a first down? Mike Bell, welcome to starting in the NFL. God forbid Nate Allen drops his next interception opportunity because we don't have another FS. We are marching towards the Super Bowl and anyone who does anything at all at any point in time to possibly hinder that is going down.

But I'm really excited knowing that the Eagles are guaranteed a Super Bowl now. Think about it: Reid wants to win now, but no one really knows what we have in Kolb. We haven't seen enough of Kolb to know what he can be. He could be Brees, Manning and Brady all rolled into one. But Mike Vick is starting. That means he is without a doubt better than any possibility Kolb could turn into.  Reid is letting us know that even though there is no way to know how good Kolb could be, Vick is better. Soooo, Super Bowl is the only possible outcome. If Kolb's ultimate potential is the best QB in the league (again, we don't really know if he is or isn't at this point) and Vick is better, then how can we not be headed for glory?

I better start planning my Super Bowl party now. It's gonna be epic.

Dude

Normally you are one of the most rational folks on BGN, but you are overreacting a tad.

Honestly, the way he did this to Kolb is not good, but Andy is not completely without reason.

My biggest fear is that our o-line dooms Kolb to become the next Joey Harrington/David Carr/insert qb with horrible o-line. He also has a first-year starter at RB picking up the blitzes.
Nobody thinks we are going to win the SB. That can’t be what this is about. Kolb may also be ready. But do we really want to throw him to the wolves, with Demarcus Ware, Brian Orakpo, and Osi in his face constantly?
Honestly, I would have played Kolb but I also have ZERO (0) faith in our o-line, an o-line that was embarassed by the 2-34 detroit lions, the only thing in this state more anemic than the auto companies. I’d rather not see him get killed

But we have to throw him to the wolves.

It has to be sink or swim because Vick is gone after this year. We can’t carry two big QB contracts, so Vick isn’t gonna resign if Kolb is still around. That means that he gets battle-tested next year. What if he blows? I doubt we are taking a QB with our first round pick and we will have no solid contingency plan in place. If Kolb is no good we limp through next year, draft a new QB and waste several years of a talented young team. If we know that ahead of time we can draft the future next year, not in two years. And we can sign Vick on as the stop-gap. If Kolb is good, great, but wouldn’t it be better to know that now?
Rodgers dealt with a worse offensive line than this his first year. He had to sink or swim. If we are so confident in Kolb that we would trade away McNabb, why can’t we let Kolb sink or swim? He doesn’t need protecting, he needs experience.

why the fuck didn’t Reid build a decent OL?

Vick forever!

Remember when Michael Vick beat the Superbowl bound Lions by 3? Kolb had his quarter and a half to show us that he was an elite QB and throw 4 TD’s against the #2 ranked defense last year he couldn’t deliver. Bench his ass!

Dude, are you serious? At least, have some substance in your argument. It was 35-17 before the defense coughed up 15 straight points in a span of 5 minutes. Kolb should have been the starter for at least one more game but don’t take anything away from Vick’s play.

fail

How come when Kolb plays poorly GB is “the #2 ranked defense” but you omit the fact that Vick had an awesome half (67% completion, 184 passing, 103 rushing) against that same defense?

I have used this same exact argument mutliple times. Prepare yourself for the “they didn’t gameplan for vick” response. Foolproof.
I think my opinion is most similar to yours from what I have read here. Dissapointed that Kolb isn’t getting the chance/didnt capitalize on what chance he had…but still very excited because vick has looked great thus far.

PS. I have also compared vicks coming in at half vs GB to kolb coming in at half vs Baltimore. Same EXACT situation, but one stood up the the challenge and the other crumbled. Pro-Kolbers don’t seem to like that argument…

I’m totally with you on this. I don’t think we’ve seen enough of Kolb, but I don’t think we’ve seen enough of Vick yet either. I want to see if he’s actually risen above his old self. Can he be even better than his old self? Maybe actually become accurate? He’s been playing amazing and I don’t think we’ve seen it all yet.

Blue pill or red pill?

No seriously. Vicks playing really well. It’s not unreasonable to want to keep him in there. (Biggest Kolb supporter)<——————————- I want Kolb to play more. Rogers and Manning got crushed their first year in sacks. It’s what helped them learn the importance of knowing the defense before you say hike, so they could make quick decisions. Short term its a good thing. Long term it’s……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

A little dramatic arent we?

Seriously dude! “We haven’t seen enough of Kolb to know what he can be.”He could be Brees, Manning and Brady all rolled into one. But Mike Vick is starting." Did you just write that? Aren’t your hopes that high set on a kid that has only started a handful of games? I seriously do not think he will be near any of those quarterbacks. What’s wrong with Vick and the fact that he did well even though our O-line is suffering and the pocket collapses almost every snap? I’m exaggerating there; but the line is a serious weak point. Kolb may be the next QB for the Eagles. But for the time being he may not be able to survive and help the team out. Andy’s looking at the perspective of “who can win right now for this team”. He isn’t thinking about Kolb getting butt hurt. So grow up and become a real Eagles fan and get off of Kolbs dick. I can’t believe that I’m watching grown men cry just because they overhyped a QB all by themselves and put him on a pedestal and now that he’s not starting it’s “THE DAY THE EAGLES DIED”? Come’on man you usually post some good stuff. Don’t post anymore of this garbage.

I was mostly being hyperbolic, but my point remains this:

We truly do not know what we have in Kolb. I do not think he will go on to be the best QB in the history of the game, but I would like to at least find out if that’s remotely the case.

If this was all about protection, why did he ever get the start? Even before Jackson went down the line looked shaky. Vick should have been starting from day one if that is really the argument.

You say win right now? Why did we trade McNabb in order to start Kolb? How is that sticking to “win right now”? Reid’s argument was that he believed Kolb to be good enough. Well what changed? Kolb never got a chance to prove himself unworthy or incapable of winning.

I’m not on Kolb’s dick. I wanted McNabb this year, but I also don’t want to venture into the next several years limp at the QB position. With Kolb’s contract it is unlikely that Vick will get resigned. What happens if Kolb sucks then? Kafka? I want to know now if Kolb can lead this team because if we wait until we don’t have Michael Vick on the roster, we will be screwed. The truth is, anything other than a Super Bowl victory this year will be a failure. Unless they trade Kolb and resign Vick. Which I suppose is a possibility, but not a very likely one.

Also, back off the “real Eagles’ fan” bullshit. Fans have opinions. They aren’t always the same opinions as some other fans. Sometimes a fan can dislike a decision by a coach, player or front office. It doesn’t make them “not a real fan”.

by NOLACuse on Sep 22, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with the last part about fans and opinions. If someone has a different opinion thats fine, they can still be a fan and want something else. What really gets me the the fan that says person A should be starting, then when they don’t they continue to say well that’s it for the season, I can’t wait to see us lose. That really is annoying.

I hope you don't think that's where I stand.

I think we will be competitive, but flawed and I do not relish any losing I think we will do. I hope we tear it up. I just have reservations as to whether or not that will actually happen. Just because I want Kolb starting doesn’t mean I want Vick to fail. Hell, I wanted McNabb to start all along and now I’m pulling for Kolb, so make sense of that one.

Not you, but......

There’ve been posts since well, around April 4th. From a number of people about how now we’re going 4-12 etc. I really can’t stand that, people that troll the boards just wanting to see the team fail, even though they’re fans. I never understood that. If you disagree, that’s fine, but at the end of the day, once it’s done, get on board and follow, if not get the hell out of the way!
