Breaking: Andy Reid Names Michael Vick As Eagles Starter
This is breaking news... Andy Reid has announced that Michael Vick is the Eagles starting quarterback. The Eagles will be holding a full press conference in about a half hour, so it appears that this isn't due to an injury to Kevin Kolb.
It looks like Michael Vick is the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles for the rest of the year.
More details to come.
[Update by JasonB, 09/21/10 6:24 PM EDT ] Andy Reid will be holding a conference call at 6:30. I'll update this story as he speaks.
Has nothing to do with Kevin Kolb or his injury, his future is "not slighted one bit." Still says he can be a franchise quarterback.
Says it's all about Vick's "accelerated play." Calls Vick "the hottest quarterback in the NFL." Says Vick deserves to play, Kolb will be allowed to continue his maturation process.
Says it's his responsibility to continue evaluating and Vick's accelerated play prompted the decision to make a change.
Was asked whether one half of play was enough to evaluate Kolb. Andy says it wasn't about judging Kolb, he'll still be a Superbowl level QB. However, when you have a guy playing at the level that Vick is you have to let him play.
Reid says that this will help Kevin Kolb's maturation process and he will get to continue to learn.
Reid says he didn't expect the accelerated play of Vick when he made the decision to go with Kolb in preseason.
Says he's been meeting with Kolb over the past two days and that he wants to be the starter, but has accepted the decision. He says Kolb is unfortunately stuck behind an "Ex superstar that has now regained his abilities."
Reid says the team has seen the great play from Vick over the past two weeks and that has factored into the decision.

KOLB is a natural born leader - something the Eagles haven't had on offense in a long long time. Prediction, we win a SB in the next 3 years.

more than leinert got.. a lot of similarities there in lack of ability to make multiple reads on open receivers, dumping it off to short passes too much, almost killed DJax in preseason, etc.
Leinart threw four times as many passes in his career than Kolb. There’s really no comparison between the two of them.

And that was way to long to figure out that Leinert wasnt going to cut it. How much is enough to determine what is best for teh team? Shouldnt we let the coach determine that?

Completely theoretical, but I imagine with the offensive line in such a shitty shape, it’s better to keep Kolb as a backup and bring him in next year, than to let the sharks eat him alive

Seems reasonable
He can always switch back if the line tightens up. Although that would be problematic in its own right
Maybe
But the Oline is really not as bad as it seems. I watched the game tape, and they were okay to me.

I think Andy’s been watching too much Always Sunny. He’s decided to turn into a Charlie-esque Wild Card.
Looks like he cut the brakes on the rape van that is the Eagles’ plan for the future. WILD CARD!

Totally unexpected. The mind has to wonder whether this is being done for football reasons or health concerns. If this is the choice, I can’t see it being a one week thing. Looking forward, the environment for Week 4 with McNabb in the house would be such an uninviting spot to throw Kolb in.

Why would anyone trade for Vick when he is a FA after this year? Even if they trade for him at the dead line it’s going to take a week or two for him to get acclimated to the team and their offense, by then, the team is what? 10 games into the season?
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Sign, extend. What was the purpose of bringing back Michael Vick if he was to be a back up for his 2 years here? That was the intent, so I must think that because he is a highly paid back up that the Eagles front office was and is still hellbent on trading him

This has WTF written all over it. It is a complete 180 from what Andy has been saying all along. This is a win now move. I don’t know, I think that we are a year or two away, even with Vick. This sets us back a year or two IMHO.
This sucks.

This may be just for game 3
Everyone should relax before all the info is released.
You can muff a punt but can't punt a muff
how about this...
If Kolb were to get another concussion, (likely with this line) the NFL and the press would be ALL over them. A PR nightmare the organization doesnt need. Vicks here one year…Kolb sat this long, let him sit some more. He has 10 million reasons to be content with that.
Is VICK that much better now????
the guy was NEVER a good passer. I dont care if he diced up the Lions — everyone does
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
He took six sacks against the Lions
Do we really want to send Kolb out there right after a concussion like that? If there is ANY doubt about his health, they need to take their time. If he played against Detroit he would have taken a lot of hits (not a knock on his mobility our o-line just sucks right now)
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
I don’t care if he diced up the Chiefs- everybody does.
McNabb- 1
Kolb- benched after 10 passes!
Vick- 1
Not really a fair comparison. They’ve got a much bigger running game and their defense was ridonkulous in the first half.

Both teams put up 22 points
And Kolb arguably had better receivers (Vernon Davis is better than Celek, but Maclin and Jackson are far superior to Morgan and Crabtree).
Not a knock on Kolb, all I’m saying is that NO’s defense isn’t exactly the Baltimore Ravens
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
They’re still really solid, though. Not like some pushover. That’s the point that Joe was making, I assume, and one that I would make. bdawk4ever was trying to downplay Kolb because all he did was put up big points against a pushover D, and the Saints had and still have a solid defense.

True
But my point is you can’t use one game, or half’s, for either. I’m not opposed to the move, but really it doesn’t make too much sense.
McNabb- 1
Kolb- benched after 10 passes!
Vick- 1
The score at the half was well out of reach, because Kevin Kolb did his best to make sure we were out of the game by the half
So the Saints sat back, played prevent defense, and let Kevin throw for 300.
Nobody cares. Actually watch the film of games once in a while.
His first half stats from that game
Were very good.
tut tut
For for those of you that have argued that most of Kolb’s yardage came against the Saints’ prevent defense in the second half, here are his first half numbers…
14/22, 196 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT. Halftime score – 17-13, Saints. I guess we can put that nonsense to bed.
That's great Bobby, but we don't have Dance Dance Revolution, so... you're dumb.

All I’m saying is you were knocking on Kolb for playing pretty poorly in preseason, then saying Vick is amazing. So it’s not really a fair thing to knock on Kolb for if Vick was worse. I’ll agree with you that Kolb didn’t look good in Game 1, but it was for 7 non-concussed passes on a positional rotation with Vick. Not really anything meaningful to draw huge conclusions on.

Initial thoughts
- This isn’t to ‘protect Kolb’ because of the offensive line or to let him sit.
- I really wonder how much of this was Reid’s call.
- Eagles’ ownership isn’t content to potentially go through a painful 4 or 5 win season so they are putting in Vick.

Wow...
I never expected that. It seemed like Kolb was Reid’s guy and it seemed like this would never happen unless Kolb was spectacularly awful. This kind of reminds me of how everything went with Leinart here in Arizona.
I’m not an Eagles fan, but I do think Vick is the best QB on your roster. It’ll be interesting to see what he can do if he is the starter for the entire year.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].
I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.
But Leinart got so many chances!
Remember that Devin Hester game when Arizona got staked to a 23-3 lead and blew it? Kolb has never had ANYTHING like that happen

Well fuck. I’m glad 7 non-concussed pass attempts is all we need to know. If we don’t win the SB with Vick this year, this is a mistake. This is now going to be McNabb-Kolb all over again assuming they extend Vick. And if they don’t extend Vick, and we don’t win the SB, what was the point?

Lol at Kolb demanding a trade
I don’t think any other NFL team would wanna pay Kolb that much money. Especially being as though he never showed anything. Why would a guy who is being paid 12 million demand a trade. Kolb will probablyt never make 12 million again in his life. And he’s making 12 million all while wearing a headset on the sideline with no helmet on chewing gum with his hand on his hip.

Why demand a trade?
So that he can play.
Maybe you like doing jack-shit all day at your job, but I’m guessing he prefers to actually play football while he makes that money. If he got traded he would make that much money from the other team, so I don’t see what your point is about him not making that much again.
And you don’t think the Bills would want him? Or the Browns? Or the Cardinals? They all have shit for QBs already and Kolb at least has potential, something none of those teams’ QBs have in any form.
Eagles' FO offseason moves
Makes them look like rubes especially with all of the inflation of Kolb and handing him that huge paycheck.

Did Reid just sign his death warrant? Without a SB win this year I don't see how he didn't.
Not sure how he gets out of this one if Vick ends up sucking and Kolb demands a trade for getting bitch-slapped. Vick will regress. The question is how much, and can the Eagles withstand it?
Until this past off season it was always believed that Reid was the management.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Then Reid is as good as done already.
He never let management (or fans) decide for him before. Why start now?
He let actual results dictate his decision for once?
He has to go. That’s too much common sense for a head coach to be using!
Blast him and his ability to know good quarterbacking when he sees it!
No, read what I was replying to.
If Reid is only making this decision because he was leaned on by management, his position is tenuous.
I was making no comment on whether or not he based his decision on results. Perhaps he did. That’s not what I was responding to though.
Remember that this is only the 2nd qb/coach relation ship reid has had since in philly. Mcnabb and reid had a special relationship and in I was I think it hurt the eagles in some situations, it shouldn’t be that shocking that he handles this a little differently

How can people damn this move already?
yeah it makes them look foolish on a couple of accounts at the onset but you have no idea on how Vick plays.
This offensive line isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. My bet is that Wells replaces Cole (who has bene terrible and doing his best MJG impersonation of late) this week or next and the offensive line starts to look a little better once they have Cole out and a bit more continuity.
Because this is an all-in, bet the farm move.
This is a Vikings going after Favre move. If they don’t win the SB, they could have just fucked over an incredibly talented young team. If Vick plays well, but ultimately plays like Vick (aka mediocre and unaccomplished) what was the point? If they just let Vick go after the year, they just wasted a year when Kolb could have been learning and getting acclimated. Now that happens next year instead. Or if they extend Vick, Kolb has every reason to demand a trade. Then we are really screwed if Vick turns out to be overrated.
For a team that prides itself on having a long term plan...
this move stinks of desperation. How do you give a guy a 12 mil extension, trade the franchises best QB all under the belief that Kolb is the future of this team and then 7 passes into his reign you are now sure he isn’t that guy anymore?
Reid has always been a joke as a coach but been a great talent evaluator and manager of the team, now? I don’t even think he can manage that.

I’m going to be eating my words for the rest of the season now. I never expected Reid to do this after how he stood behind Donovan for all those years.
A marked difference between Kevin Kolb and Donovan McNabb
McNabb was a fantastic quarterback for many years IN SPITE of his weapons. Kolb has some of the best skill position players available in the NFL, and still can’t crack subpar. After 10 throws, which I feel is a downright fair sample size.

it just doesn’t make sense to give your “future” QB 10 snaps then take the reigns from him because Vick had a good game and a half.

He had Norwood for a year, Roddy White when he was still learning the system, Price when he was washed up. I do agree that he had two weapons in Dunn and Norwood but when you consider the fact that his number one receiver was Michael Jenkins – well, that’s not optimal, to put it lightly. He’s not accurate, obviously, but I see definite improvement, probably thanks to the Eagles staff. In Atlanta he was young and immature and ran around a lot hoping to bust the big one. This Vick is different, he’s willing to get hit, take the tackle, get those precious few yards, and looks much more accurate.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.

Screw this crap
Yes, Vick gives us the best shot right now in this year, maybe. This is the best he’s ever looked I agree, but we have far more evidence to suggest that he isn’t able to sustain this level of success.
If I’m Kolb I demand a trade right now, if its all a business I want to prove myself and get paid, can’t do that behind Vick.

While he's still with us yes
But what about his next contract? If he can go prove himself on another team he’ll be in line for more years and more money. On our bench? Maybe a one year deal to prove himself, this is a tough league, make money when you’re young, ever year you lose on the bench is a lot of money left on the table.

I’m sure Andy Reid still wants Kolb as the starter, but I bet ownership wants Vick cuz it seems that he’ll give them a better shot at winning now.

I’m willing to bet it’s because of the shit offensive line. They would’ve gotten Kolb killed. Weren’t all of us calling the O-line a weakness before the draft? Boom.
Couldn’t agree more! This line is atrocious right now.
"i know talent .. the eagles do not " – JIBTA
Actually its not
The tape last week showed me they are improving. They will be decent pretty quick.
McNabb- 1
Kolb- benched after 10 passes!
Vick- 1
The Eagles lead the NFL in sacks given up the first two weeks. Our tight ends and running backs stink at blocking too.
But of those 6 sacks last week, maybe 2 were on the line. Watch the tape.
McNabb- 1
Kolb- benched after 10 passes!
Vick- 1
Then they were on Vick?
What’s your point? And this line has a long way to go. Kolb’s concussion is proof
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
I highly doubt that. Vick escaped from 3-4 sacks by himself. Did you see the Green Bay game? Kolb was getting murdered.
Not at run blocking
They were pretty decent at that.

I know you're not talking about the eagles.
If Vick’s the new starting QB, does this mean the eagles just became a run first team?
by KornontheKobb on Sep 21, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I wholeheartedly admit the o-line did well run blocking on Sunday. LeSean had some great holes to run through at times. In my previous criticisms I guess I should have been more specific and a little less critical. It’s the pass protection that I take umbrage with.
"i know talent .. the eagles do not " – JIBTA
It’s my opinion that the o-line has played poorly going back to the preseason. What I saw on Sunday was an offensive line that missed many line calls and blocking schemes up front. They did well at times and they did really poorly at times. That will happen when your o-line “qb” (Jackson) is lost to injury. The appropriate calls weren’t always made which lead to many unnecessary double teams (leaving other d-lineman abated to the backfield) and missed blitz pick-ups.
I also agree with Route36 that the TE and RB’s need to block better. You can’t blame the sacks in game one solely on Kolb’s happy feet. If there were a pocket to step up in then there would be no need for him to get happy feet and look to run or escape.
With LeSean running for 100+ yards against Detroit the O-line obviously did some things right. But there is also waaaay more room for improvement. This was Detroit, not the Steel Curtain defense. Detroit had 6 sacks against Vick. That is 6 sacks against arguably the most athletic guy on the team. That tells me that the Detroit defense was in the backfield a lot, whether it was blitz packages or not.
"i know talent .. the eagles do not " – JIBTA
Kolb
He should’ve gotten the opportunity to start the year he was drafted just like Flacco and Ryan. Hindsight is a killer, though.
Yea, that didn't work out for Vince Young or Leinart
History shows sitting a season or more increases success greatly.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Uh-huh.
Well then!
Please don’t be a fluke, Mr. Vick.
That's great Bobby, but we don't have Dance Dance Revolution, so... you're dumb.
Personally
I like Vick because he’s an excitable player and he is very mobile. Our offensive line was terrible and putting Kolb out there would give him no chance. We did put him out there and Clay Matthews absolutely mauled him, on multiple plays. I like Kolb but I’m not very high on him, and I wouldn’t mind extending Vick and trading Kolb. It’s all personal bias, but that’s just how I feel. Vick’s working as of right now. Personally, while his throws weren’t always accurate and reminded me of Donovan McNabb, he does put the balls in good places where only his receivers can get it. He does offer a double threat as a runner and a thrower. He does run his option routes well.
Honestly, if we keep Vick as a starter, he pretty much has to choose us when signing at the end of the year. We’re a winning team with talent and nothing at quarterback (assuming Kolb is unhappy and is traded) we can sign him to a multi-year deal and he has plenty left in the tank if he can run this fast at age 30. I wouldn’t even throw out the chance of him becoming a pocket passer that occasionally runs later in his career, again, like Donovan McNabb. By the time Vick is done, we can take a 1st round pick quarterback. And then we either rise or fall.
Vick gives us the best chance now, and I don’t think it mortgages our future. While Kolb would have been a great quarterback, and I hope he does become one, I’d rather win now and then go through the cycle of a new quarterback again.
I like the Eagles approach with Kolb, but I think they may have jumped the gun on McNabb’s future, and not predicted that he would still be good at this age. Because of this they were forced into a decision and all of this happened. I’m not advocating keeping McNabb, but I just found it interesting.
Disagreement is fine, these are my personal views, and they’re open to debate. I wouldn’t be unhappy if you commented on it negatively. :)
Best Chance To Win........
Thank you Andy glad you admit your Mistiake and dont stick to a broken script. Kolb Just looked lost. Somewhere McNabb is Laughing His ass off.

Vick probably won't.
The Redskins look pretty good and so does McNabb. And their defense is fast. The antidote to Vick has always been a fast defense.
I've been a big supporter of the Eagles FO for a long time
But this move has Dan Snyder written all over it. I’ve lost a lot of respect today … if what I am hearing is true,

What happens when
Vick goes back to preseason game 2 form? Not only will Kolb’s confidence be shot, but they just basically spit in his face.
Right.
Cause a win over Detriot is all the proof he needs.
To be fair
He also had a good half against Green Bay. That is a solid defense.

True
but the gameplan for Kolb is the polar opposite of what the gameplan for Vick would be.

I kind of buy into the whole Morhinweg and Reid made Vick a better QB, though
Because previously Vick was working under such astute QB minds such as Dan Reeves (who hated John Elway) and Jim Mora Jr. who yeah.
Maybe they did.
I’d believe it even. That doesn’t mean he won’t regress towards his old percentage, even if he stays above it. I have a hard time believing he will prove to be a more competent passer than McNabb for example, even with the new coaching. That should be our barometer since it’s who we gave up for what is now Vick (as opposed to Kolb).
Vick’s career best for passing is 337 yards. He has one other 300+ yard passing game that I can see. McNabb has had 31. He threw for over 400 on Sunday. (And oh yea, Kolb has two 300+ yard games already in his short career).
People cite Vick’s running ability as necessary to consider when looking at his low passing numbers. That’s all well and good, but he depended on the run in the past and got stuffed when it counted. The Eagles did it to him. All you need is a fast and disciplined defense. He will undoubtedly run into a couple of those if we make the playoffs. If he can’t get the job done through the air, he can’t get the job done.
Honestly, Vick could get away with a 56% completion rate in a Pro Bowl worthy yearas long as he continues to keep the turnovers down
His mobility makes that much of a difference
Not when he faces a fast, disciplined defense.
His mobility has been contained before and can be contained again. It is not yet clear that he has learned to adjust to that because he hasn’t faced it yet. But he will eventually and it will be telling how he reacts to being contained. I hope he steps up and takes advantage of a defense that keeps him in the pocket, but a 56% completion rate won’t be the answer in that situation.
He Started Before
He’s 1 and 1 he’s not a rookie. Vick hasn’t started in yrs and came out and balled. Why does he get a pass? He won 1 game in his career.
My question
is does Kolb go home tonight and kill a rattlesnake or a wild boar?

Personally, I’m not as sure this is a condemnation of Kolb as this is a condemnation of our OL.
If Kolb is still feeling residual concussion effects that may last for weeks (and they feel it would hinder his development too much), then it’s a minimally passable explanation for giving Vick the job.
But it’s clear the line needs a kick in the pants. Peters is the highest-paid LT in the game, Herremans is supposed to be a solid guard, Justice is less than a year removed from a big payday, and McGlynn and Cole are supposed to be serviceable fill-ins and we can barely block for shit.
If anything, Castillo’s job is on the line here.

But...we're not giving up on Vick...

"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
Donovan 'started somewhere' with Doug Pederson
He then assumed the reigns and immediately made the team 11-5 from a previous 5-11 campaign. Do not compare Kevin Kolb to early Donovan McNabb, please. There is no comparison.
Kolb was slated to take over an 11-5 team, and he would have likely made it 5-11. Progress!
Oh, wait a second…
A prevent defense and the Chiefs aren't exactly two games you write home to mommy about telling her how great you were
Again, Kolb was the reason we lost the Saints game early, and then the defense stopped caring. And the Chiefs were horrible last year and Wilma could’ve put up 150 on that defense.
I also think
that there is no way Kolb takes this quietly. Trade demand or he just won’t resign after the year. And honestly, I’ll be on his side if he requests a trade.

I'm wondering about this from an "offense" standpoint
Is there any connection between signing Bell (more running options and he’s supposed to be a good receiver) and promoting Vick? Note that McCoy got more carries in the Lions game.
Maybe the idea behind this is to give Vick more offensive options so opposing defenses don’t know what’s coming, in the sense of not only pass or run, but what kind of pass or run.

that bothers me

bottom line
he’s got a tough job to do… he most definitely is getting pressured (after trading mcnabb) to win now. the “master plan”.
how do you say no to a guy like vick who was top 3 qb last week?
most of you bash mcnabb supporters for loving mcnabb
you would bash mcnabb and call yourselves eagles fans and say “if you love mcnabb go be a redskins fan. we like kolb cuz hes an eagle.” now you hate the decision?

We better win the Super Bowl this year
‘cause that’s the only reason you’d make this move. I will still root for the Eagles but unless we win the Super Bowl this is a stupid, stupid, move. If we are doing this then why the hell did we trade McNabb?
Go Eagles!
stuck with an old qb and no successor?
"Bills everywhere, trill everything, and Drake just stand for Do Right And Kill Everything..."
Wrong
The Vikings knew a bit more of what they had with Jackson and it wasn’t much. They also knew that their team was really a QB away from making a legit SB run. This team isn’t close enough to making a legit SB run with or withouth Vick at QB.
Well just them taking basically a "one-time" shot at the SB
instead of getting a promising QB and developing and insane team. I was really surprised how far the Vikings went last year, but it looks like they aren’t even gunna come close this year. But I just think this is a step back. Kolb is our future, he should be playing with our young team
This is so retarded
I had a feeling the WR were gunna start rallying around Mike after last week. I bet that has a lot to do with it too
really?
DeSean had 250yds and 2 TDs with Kolb last year.
Celek had 16 catches, 208yds, and a TD with Kolb last year
There’s no reason to think that they won’t get their’s with Kolb under center
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
that’s what this makes no sense. Winning the SB seems so far-fetched that not sticking with “the future of the franchise” is inexplicable.
That's my point
I was hoping for a good year but really figured that there would be growing pains with Kolb and we were a couple of years away. We are very young and it makes so much sense to let Kolb grow with these guys. This move just smells of desperation, and it does not make sense. I really thought that we were a forward thinking organization, until now. The time to do something like this was a couple of years ago, when we had guys on there last few years of productivity, Runyon, Thomas, Dawkins, etc, etc. This does not make sense now.
Stupid.

I'm guessing...
Kolb won’t be brought in to run the wild cat?
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Andy Reid either just gained a ton of credibility, or lost ALL of it.
Some may say that going back on his word so quickly might sow seeds of doubt in his team. He’s known for his loyalty, and the players, I’m sure, have come to trust that about him. Maybe know they feel like Reid’s feeling the pressure to win now and making some rash decisions – losing that trust with his players and his credibility along with it. Many fans will feel that way too.
On the other hand, many will commend Reid and standing up and making the tough decision. It’s not easy, after making such a declarative statement to the contrary, the suddenly reverse your field and go the other way. You know you’re gonna get flak for it – but in the end, you make the decision that needs to be made, and you gain a lot of credibility in the eyes of many.
Personally, I really do feel sorry for Kolb, but I can’t say I don’t see the logic in starting Vick. It was only one game, against a bad defense, yes, but he made a lot of good decisions out there, decisions he wouldn’t have made before he finally grew a pair.
Whether Reid ends up the hero or the goat… only time will tell.

I will say this for Reid
He’s put his job on the line for this. If this doesn’t work out (and I don’t think it will), he shouldn’t still be the coach at noon the day after the last game of the season.
Am I reading to much into his comments about “I felt I needed to make the decision” and “they’ve seen how Michael played” as indication that the locker room was significantly pro-Vick?
Probably, but just as baseless as everything said about it tonight
an educated guess, yes the lockeroom spoke to reid
and he listens. he knows how to manage the lockeroom.

Yep.
There’s no going back from this. I can’t imagine there’s a financial apology big enough to make Kolb stay?
How would you sell that to the locker room and fans if you try to go back to Kolb either this year or next?
Andy Reid has completely tied himself to Vick. If Vick fails, Reid must go.
Agree
I don’t see how Reid could ever go back to Kolb now, how would Kolb control the locker room, and be a leader after this? I think Vick will be extended in the next couple weeks, and Kolb will be traded in the offseason.

I am a huge Kolb fan, was never a McNabb fan, and not a Vick fan. I am not mad that this team has done a 180 and decided to go to Vick. Yes he did play out of his mind, and he did deserve this promotion no doubt about it. But Kolb did not deserve to be demoted. Kolb has been billed as the future, and now all of the sudden he isn’t? Now if this in part due the bad Oline...like most of us think
why can’t he call quick routes for Kolb. Pick defense apart bit by bit. Sustain long drives to eat up the clock. Is he that obsessed with the DEEP flashy plays. Or is he or “they” so impatient that he/they want to see Kolb play like Rodgers or Brees right out the gate. They want results NOW. Then why trade Dmac. Dmac gave us results right away. This is not cut and dry.

I am
still in shock. Quite frankly I don’t know how to react to the move. Yes Kevin Kolb may be the future but Vick is playing out of his mind. On the other hand, Vick won’t be here after this year unless he gets extended which would be just stupid as it would be stunting Kevin Kolb’s growth…don’t know what to say.
If I'm goin' to hell, you're coming with me...
I don't think Kolb is that great...
Not every QB that gets drafted in the first two rounds becomes a good starting QB…
Future?
I understand that Vick gives the Eagles the best chance to win now but I was looking forward to see Kolb and the rest of the young skill players progress and hopefully build something good for the long term.
I was looking forward to see Kolb and the rest of the young skill players progress and hopefully build something good for the long term
I’ve been indifferent when it came to Kolb, but this is what I have been looking forward to all off-season. Now the teams two starting QB’s are both set to have contracts expire at the end of this season. The team will essentially be forced to sign one of these two guys to big money or trade for a starter while drafting the future QB all over again. I really thought this would be a year where the young guys worked through the up’s and down’s of being somewhat inexperienced and work towards being a solid, cohesive group that grows together.
"i know talent .. the eagles do not " – JIBTA
I am just a fucking Idiot but can someone explain why Kolb is better than Vick. Does everybody forget the Eagles had to beat him to go to the only the second superbowl they have been to. He was a awsome QB he had bad games but so had McNabb, Cunningham, and Jaws. Com on Kolb is a CAREER BACK-UP. They management knows it and I bet money the team feels the same way. OH and to FlyEagles 15 now you can take Kolbs balls off your chin and his dick out your mouth or are you going to wait til the swelling goes down …… Stupid FAGGOT. Vick has won more games yes it was a while ago but some were playoff games so I think that has something to do with it the only game I have ever seen Kolb look good was to a lions like Chiefs team I won’t by that game as him being ready. Sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree.
The FO definitely did not change their mind because of the Detroit game. The Packers game played a role too, and I’m sure that in practice Vick looked good. Reid just said the stuff he said about Vick being better than in practice/preseason to save as much face as he can for keeping Kolb as a starter. That’s my take.
I do think it’s stupid to start Kolb because you’ve been grooming him. If he doesn’t give you the best chance, and your only reason is because you’ve been grooming him, then you need to rethink the reasons for why Kolb should be a starter.
I have to say though, Vick’s proven. Kolb isn’t.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
If Andy would come out and blame the O-line as the reason why Vick starts
I would have the upmost respect for him
He would also be hanged probably...
if he said that. He won’t just come outright and say that because that would mean that he f***ed up in the offseason by not making any changes to the O-Line other than Reggie Wells. He knew that was a weakness and yet he didn’t target anyone in the draft. It’s more like he won’t be able to say it.
If I'm goin' to hell, you're coming with me...
Bye Kevin.
I am actually sorry to say this because of my extreme hatred for Vick.
"Up yours, asshole!"--EvilBanner to effeminate yachtsman Boston Jeff Lurie
I know.
On the one hand, I was right about Kolb. But that victory is ringing real fucking hollow right about now.
"Up yours, asshole!"--EvilBanner to effeminate yachtsman Boston Jeff Lurie
This is a joke
Vick was garbage when he started in the preseason. They were so impressed by Vick playing well against the Packers (who gameplanned against Kolb), and the Lions (who just plain suck)? They potentially ruined Kolb’s career. You let young players work through struggles (especially more than 10 passes). What’s going to go through Kolb’s head when Vick goes back to how he actually plays and Kolb has to start? Even next year. It’ll feel like a million eyes are on every snap he takes.
Potentially ruined his career?
They fucking “Bad Newz Kenneled” his career. They raped his career and then electrocuted it with this move.
"Up yours, asshole!"--EvilBanner to effeminate yachtsman Boston Jeff Lurie
I Didn't
I mean, we all make mistakes. He made his mistakes too. You definitely wouldn’t like it if some really embarassing mistakes of yours were paraded and you were always known for that. For example, what if you wet the bed when you were a kid and you were always known as bedwetter? Just because you have hatred for Vick doesn’t mean that you should insult him in such a way. No one calls Kolb a monster for hunting, they just say it lightly.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
sure, but they’re mistakes nonetheless. i’m just saying that because you’re not a public person, your mistakes aren’t broadcasted across the whole world, but imagine if you were vick and people walked up to you and called you dog killer and ron mexico? How would you explain that you changed.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
I was wondering why Reid was sticking with Kolb.
For the Eagles, I honestly think this is the move that gets them the most wins this year, especially after the promise he showed against the Packers and Lions.
I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Plus it would make much more sense for Reid to at least let Kolb start against Jacksonville, just to get more basis for this type of move. Not like Kolb is so shitty that he’d make us lose against Jax. And if he is, Vick could come in and save the day once it’s apparent that Kolb is a human wasteland.

You would rather put a potential franchise QB behind that POS o-line?
Reid is watching out for Kolb…and potentially trying to get a better trade value out of him.

eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
If that's the reason
Then just say it. Maybe it lights a fire under the OL. But don’t pretend you’re doing it because of 6 quarters of football against (a) a defense that hadn’t prepared for Vick and (b) the Lions.
i actually thought that as soon as i posted.
so i retract my previous statement
The only way to find out if he’s a potential franchise QB is to PLAY HIM.
And they better extend Vick quick because why would Kolb resign here if he thinks he can start somewhere?
Instead, Reid caved.
My sentiments exactly.

If everything I said about Vick/Kolb is wrong, I’ll be the happiest Eagles fan ever.
The best thing about Tim Tebow is his former roommate.
Agreed.
Look, if Andy’s right, and we win the Super Bowl? Then go Vick.
What I fear is that we’re sacrificing our future so that instead of going 7-9 or 8-8, we go 9-7 or 10-6 and either miss or lose early in the playoffs.
Honestly, and maybe I am the only one, I would be fine with a 5-11, 6-10 year where Kolb gets experience and then we land a top 15 pick, or better, we move up since as always we stockpiled picks, rather than playing Vick and going 9-7, or 10-6 and lose early in the playoffs.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Isn't that what I said? :)
The only reason I can think of right now: Reid thinks his job is on the line this year. He’s willing to sacrifice this team’s future so we’ll have a good enough record so he can stick around another year.
I can't understand that reasoning
There’s no way his job was on the line the first year after trading McNabb. That’s what makes this decision so confusing. There’s no reason to start Vick.
I’m with EREX on this one.
Andy Reid actually used his noggin to make a decision
Who knew?
Very good for Eagles fans (myself very thoroughly included in the mix) – whether you want to believe it or not, Kevin Kolb is not, and will never be, the answer for this franchise. Sorry, wishful thinkers, but that’s all you are.
And even Andy sees through you.
What’s that say for Reid, then?

Will this team do well with Vick? Sure, a lot of quarterbacks would. Vick may be a hybrid Quarterback that isn’t fit for, say, a shotgun formation team, but Andy’s West Coast-inspired offense is a good fit. Same goes for Kolb. I don’t really think that starting Vick in itself is a terrible idea, and I still expect us to win games. I support both QB’s.
With that said, I personally believe that there’s some misconception with this whole decision. Kolb is angry, sure, but this decision reminds me a lot about high school football: the coach chooses the player that is currently making progress or is simply the best player available. It’s a job to win, and Vick has shown that he has the tools to win currently and/or is the better QB in this situation. A lot of people may think this is an insult to Kolb, but I think this is more of a compliment to Vick. Kolb is Andy Reid’s guaranteed franchise quarterback of the future, who many scouts predict will have a great career. At this point, Reid believes that Vick is better than a future franchise quarterback. Whether you hate Kolb or not, Reid and the FO doesn’t. They think highly of him, even still. Think of what this means for Vick.

As much as I hated the McNabb trade...

Can you please stop commenting about all of Michael Vick’s wrongs? They have nothing to do with anything in this debate and are just an example of how angry you are. I know you’re respected here and I’m not, but it’s making the debate stupid and you look immature, which I find hard to believe. I’m requesting you.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
I am angry.
Why wouldn’t I be? I think he’s a bad person. And this influences how I see this decision. I think Kevin Kolb is a good person (a bad QB, but a good person). He’s the kind of guy that, if he were to become successful (and surmount almost historic odds), I could root for. Not so with Vick.
"Up yours, asshole!"--EvilBanner to effeminate yachtsman Boston Jeff Lurie
Like, it’s fine to be angry, but if the reason you’re angry about this trade is that you can’t root for Vick, shouldn’t the rest of the players outweigh one player?
And just out of curiosity, if you know about Tony Washington, what exactly do you think about him. If he came to the Eagles would you still be able to root for them?
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
I know you were asking EB, but as wrong as what Washington did, it was allegedly consensual.
And I know this is irrational, but a QB is the face of the team. Having a QB I don’t like vs. 1 guy on the OL I don’t like, that’s a pretty big difference to me.
Well, I don’t think QBs should be the face of the team. I guess it’s gonna be like that anyways, though. Oh well.
For example, I don’t like Matt Cassel. Though my reasons are different from EB’s hatred of Vick, I still like the Chiefs. Team should outweigh; you’re an Eagles fan, not an Eagles Quarterback fan.
It’s fine to hate Vick; you can’t convince the world. But alluding to his previous mistakes would be the same as if I had known secrets or bad things about you and spouted them all over.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
Another problem.
How can Kevin ever control the locker room after this?
He’s been totally shat on now. What makes you think he’d ever really play his heart out for us now?
Veritas Liberabit Te
Part of my reaction to this is that I think it is really shortsighted that they deviate from something they planned and set up over the course of three years on the base of one half of football.
If Kolb had started against the Jaguars and sucked, it would at least make a bit more sense, but that game was tailor-made for him.
And Reid had already said Kolb was the starter and Vick, to his credit, had said all the right things.
Secondly, though, and at the risk of starting a flame war, I still have trouble rooting for Michael Vick. I know he’s paid his debt to society and all…but I still have trouble “liking” him.

I’m sure this has been mentioned before, but this can’t be based off of Kolb’s one half of play and Vick playing well in 1 1/2 games. This has to be the culmination of an entire training camp of Kolb not being able to make the throws in practice and preseason. Reid probably tried to overlook the fact that Kolb couldn’t do it for as long as possible, but eventually he couldn’t deny the fact that Kolb isn’t a Franchise Caliber quarterback and Vick still has 3-5 years left of top-level football left.
Fastest Offense Ever Assembled..... Vick, DJax, Maclin, McCoy....Greatest Show on Turf Part II
But we've seen Kevin excel in practice and Vick sucking in practice

I’ll second that. Vick did not look good in practice. But then again, the way their practices are run, they’re not very conducive to Vick’s skill sets.

The Eagles’ head of PR told me at camp that BGN is his favorite site that covers the Eagles. Not sure how many other people he said that to, but still…
Should have asked him if he knew what BGN stood for, that would let you know for sure, lol

I had written a recap of the morning session, and in between practices, he came up to me to make small talk, asked who I wrote for, and I told him Bleeding Green Nation. He goes, “No way… Are you Jimmy K?” So I says yes, surprised. And he told me that PE.com had just linked to my recap literally 10 minutes ago. He knows BGN.
I was only making a joke, but that’s pretty cool that he knew all that

Actually,on another day, I was standing with Bob_Q, and some Eagles blogger from PE.com came up to Bob with a microphone and they interviewed him about BGN.

My two cents:
With this move, Andy Reid strikes me as reactionary and pretty weak-willed. This strikes me as really weird, considering he stuck with McNabb through all the years of really emotional fans booing McNabb. This just seems completely uncharacteristic of him.
I’m honestly still not quite sure what’s going on at this point, though. Anyone else agree with this assessment?

I agree (kind of)
It seems strange to me for Andy to change his mind like this. However, nothing really suprises me with him anymore.

What do you base that on, though? 7 non-concussed passes in a half of the game where Vick played just as much as he did and didn’t get anything going, either? I would expect a reaction of at least letting him start against Jacksonville. That way, you get a full game to evaluate him. If he proves that he’s the human wasteland that so many of you think he is, now you have proof to it and you have good reason to start Vick. And guess what? It’s fucking Jacksonville. We still win. If he turns out to be the franchise QB that Reid thought he was, good. Stick to the plan, he wins. Everybody wins!

Take a look at the schedule, and take a look at the NFC East competitors
As weird as it may sound, we can’t afford to give one game. This is a brutal, brutal year, and we already have the only real patsy to be found out of the way.
The Kolb experiment is better suited for a year where we aren’t getting jammed up by the NFC North and, especially, the AFC South.
So we trade the best QB in franchise history to a division rival so we can make Michael Vick the starter? fucking stupid.
much of the rationale behind the McNabb trade was that we werent going to win a superbowl this year so lets get some value for him, allow Kolb an opportunity to grow and lets see if he can be the guy. But now Vick is the starter because he gives us the better chance to win? If the Eagles were that worried about winning this year they should have just kept McNabb, whos far better than Vick.
Now We have to wait another year or two to find out if Kolb is ‘the guy’. By then our offensive core may already be on the downside of their careers/playing in other cities. Nevermind what this does for Kolb’s confidence And I dont buy the whole O-line argument. This is the NFL, theres no way your offensive line is that bad that you can’t even start your ‘franchise’ quarterback.
I’ve always had Reids back, but this is the dumbest move i could have ever imagined.
Letsd go Phillies.
Disagree
I don’t see how they can keep Kolb after this season.

Although
I fully support Vick and him starting, you do have a fully valid point in that our rationale has changed dramatically. My only possible explanation is that maybe the FO didn’t know he could get this good so fast, if ever.
I Love Vick, and I Like Kolb.
this good this fast? He played a half against a team that wasn’t prepared for him and he played a game against the Detroit fucking lions.
I’ve had the discussion of run first QB’s with people countless times…they can make an average team look good and they can win you some games…but your never going to win a superbowl with a quarterback who makes his best plays when things go wrong. Eventually your going to run into a defense that knows exactly how to stop it. Just like the Eagles did against Vick and the Falcons in the playoffs…twice.
and if this is concussion related then why cant Reid just say so? regardless of what hes told Kolb in private this is just fueling a media storm that will only mess with Kolb’s head.
This move makes Ruben Amaro’s decision to trade Cliff Lee for slop and Paul Holmgren’s decision to sign Jody Shelley and trade Simon Gagne for garbage look like strokes of genius
I've always been a Reid supporter but...
Fuck you, Andy. After Vick has two-three horrible games and you’re starting Kafka, you should be fired. Jesus. What a bitch move by the staff and a horrible thing to do to Kolb. 10 fucking passes? I know they were horrible. I know the O-line is bad, but sorry, I don’t see Kolb recovering from this.
Wow
Kolb named the starter and most of you were goingto be happy with a HIGH DRAFT pick next year. Name Vick the starter and the damned sky is falling. How many ropes are in your houses.
The reason why Vick is now the starter and will be the starter next year is that HE IS THE BETTER MAN..PERIOD.

michael vick is the future
I think many people here are forgetting how kolb looked in the preseason.-(like crap) The coaches may have realized that he truly doesn’t have what it takes to be in the nfl. we would have been forced to keep him as an average quarteback after the mcnabb trade, however due to vicks incredible play, we take the better quarterback. Don’t tell me vick isn’t the future. He’s only 30- and currently is the leagues most atheltic quarterback. He has the ability to throw the deep ball and considering age and ability he’ll give us at least a good 4 years- Plenty of time for our young core to win a superbowl..
Stupid assumption. Maybe you missed how Vick played the last 2 games that mattered in the REGULAR SEASON. You probably did.

This is a desperate decision….I have lost all respect for Andy Reid, he needs to go. I vehemently disagree with turning over to Kevin Kolb but once Andy made that decision, he should at least give the kid a chance to prove himself. This shows Andy is on a very short leash and he’s simply trying to save his job. As great as Micheal Vick as played, he’s no McNabb, plus he has the same deficiencies that some claim McNabb has (although I beg to differ from those claims). Andy has probably lost this team already…..You pay Kolb 12Million for pre-season and 2 qrts? I smell DESPERATION in the air. I had much respect for Andy Reid than this.
he had his chance
forgetting 4 preseason games, buddy..- and andy reid just got a 3 year extentions- his job is not in jepordy. * “As great as Micheal Vick as played, he’s no McNabb, plus he has the same deficiencies that some claim McNabb has” – umm, before vick spent some time in prision, he was the most dangerous football player in the nfl and one of the highest paid- not to mention, vick is 4 years younger than mcnabb

I just don’t get this. Unless Lurie completely pressured Reid into this, it seems like this puts Reid more on the hot seat, because I don’t see how this doesn’t put us back in “superbowl or bust” mode.
Vick would win more games this year than Kolb, I won’t argue with that. But I still don’t think they should abandon their rebuilding plan without giving Kolb more of a chance.
Kolb is done in Philly.

I don’t see Reid as having much of a choice. I like Kolb, but Vick was Superman the last two weeks. Not that I would compare football to war, but if you had two platoon leaders and one was handpicked by the brass, but the other just single-handedly took out a sniper’s nest and dragged three wounded men back to safety, who would you follow into battle?
That’s what Andy faced in the locker room. I give him credit for having the balls to make the move. If it fails, he’s done.
It's "Kolb"ering time!
I think people are starting to blow his performances out of proportion. It’s gone from “excellent play” to “looking like he did in 04” to saying he put on the best performance of any QB, ever. Superman just seems a bit much to me. Sure, he was really good. He also got a lot of help from receivers catching balls that were low or behind them and from McCoy setting franchise records. He also got a lot of help from C.C. Brown being C.C. Brown.
Not saying the dude hasn’t played well, he definitely has. I just think it’s getting blown way out of proportion at this point.

Was shocked to hear this, but consider: last season, the Eagles arguably had 3 QB’s who could have been starters for another team (2 with years of experience, 1 groomed in the same system for a few years after a very productive college career and two pretty good starts). In the offseason, the Eagles jettison the oldest and most expensive QB. Now he’s got two pretty good (albeit still works in progress) options at QB. OL has some problems due to injuries…..one QB gets hurt. Other QB looks better than expected, has experience as a starter. Long term plan is probably not to sign both to lengthy contracts. FO and HC start to wonder if there is trade value for one of them, decide to use this season to figure out which one to keep and which one to trade. Eagles might flip flop QB’s all year long to see which is the best fit long-term.

Some people just can't accept the truth.
When DeSean was told by Comcast Sportsnet, you could see his face explode with joy. Nobody is hating on Kevin Kolb. In fact, I think everyone knows Kolb is going to be a decent, QB – STARTING one day. But the insiders were extremely happy that offense was finally consistently moving. What Vick has done did not happen all preseason with Kolb. It wasn’t just the first half of Green Bay.

But what about all those inside stories that the young players wanted Kolb to start?
They were happy to see McNabb get traded and see Kolb get his shot. That sounds like winning over the locker room to me. How did he lose it already? He was never even given a chance to prove himself.
Ask Shady
Who, according to ESPN, got a big smile whenever he talked about Vick after the past two games. As for the young players all being with Kolb, I think that was just Jackson, who doesn’t speak for all the players let alone the young players. As for Kolb proving himself, he has been on that team for over three seasons, he should at least have the respect of the #2’s by now. His teammates have watched him for years, if he hasn’t shown something to them yet, it will be hard to change opinions.
I like Kolb, I like his skill set, and hope he gets the chance to play again, but I don’t think he ever proved to his teammates, or us, that he deserved to be the unquestioned starter.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

Well that was not the argument being made around these parts several months ago.
The argument was just the opposite. The argument was never that Vick was the one all the players loved, it was that Kolb had not only the trust of the #2s, but most of the #1s as well.
Maybe, I don't know what the players said then
But as of now, they seem excited about Vick. Reid, as well as myself, hopes Kolb will get better and become who we think he can become, but at this point, it’s unfair to tell your players that they will waste a year trying to develop a guy versus playing the guy who gives you a chance to win.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
What's the argument if Vick plays well, but the Eagles don't resign him?
If the team is ultimately Kolb’s, the Eagles won’t bring Vick back and they will start Kolb next year. Same argument one year later. Why let the good thing go to test out the unknown guy?
Hell, they already had no problem doing that. They knew they could win with McNabb but they traded him.
If we sign Jeff Garcia and we get either a stud, cover corner or a stud linebacker?
I’m good with that!

The Truth!
This helps Kolbs future out more than anything. If Kolb started the next game he would have the most pressure on him in the history of professional sports. Any bad decision or slight mistake he made, the eagles fans and probably all out football fans would have been SCREAMING FOR VICK.
Vick made amazing 3rd down plays to get long first downs after amazingly avoiding some “for sure” sacks. How was Kolb supposed to follow that up.
Kolb would have to have a perfect game while under the most pressure possible. Luckily it wouldn’t have been a home game..
The good thing for Kolb is that he still will get paid. And as soon as Vick doesn’t do GREAT, or fumbles, or throws a pick.. Kolb will be right there waiting.
I’m a vick fan more than a kolb fan and I honestly don’t believe that anyone should ever be handed a KEY TO THE TEAM. Especially with no proven record.
Lets face it. There was no guarantee that Kolb would turn into the next brett favre. In fact. There was almost NO CHANCE that kolb would be the next brett favre. I’ve never in my life saw a man ride the bench for 3 years and somehow get looked at as if he deserved the right to start no matter if he wins or loses.. I never head no BS in my life like that. ESPECIALLY for a NFL QB.. The most important position in the sport.
by phillyisback on Sep 21, 2010 11:29 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
An interesting perspective. The fact that he’d be playing against Jacksonville would pretty much alleviate that pressure, though, in my opinion. Doubt he’ll get as good a chance as that to get back the confidence of himself, his teammates, and his fans.
If you’re looking for a man who rode the bench for three years and then got the start no matter if he wins and loses, I’ve got an interesting case study: Aaron Rodgers. Precisely the same situation. First season with him, the Pack went 6-10. Now, they’re NFC favorites for the Super Bowl in most circles. Steve Young’s 49ers had a big dropoff in wins in his first year and didn’t make the playoffs, too. Not like he was a slouch in his first season, but he’s kind of along the same lines.
Just a quick point, no one really realistically expected Kolb to be ‘the next Brett Favre’, they just needed him to be a good rhythm QB that fits a West Coast Offense and can take advantage of all the playmakers around him.

The big question is? What would happen if plans went as planned and Kolb started all season and didn’t make the playoffs.. And for the next 4 years.. DIDN’T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. What would happen if Kolb turned out to be a complete BUM after wasting 3 seasons! then what?
The eagles don’t have to be a superbowl bound team. 99% of superbowl bound teams don’t win the superbowl anyway. The Giants beat the undefeated Pats.
Once you make the playoffs.. All it takes is a good game to move forward. And every team in the NFL should be trying to make the playoffs. No team completely bums a season and doesn’t care about winning games.. It’s sad that I actually read comments on this site where people were willing to have consecutive losing seasons in order to “SEE IF” Kolb could be good..
Umm.
It’s not a theory about Kolb’s ability. It’s a direct negation of a comment by you. You said the following:
I’ve never in my life saw a man ride the bench for 3 years and somehow get looked at as if he deserved the right to start no matter if he wins or loses.. I never head no BS in my life like that. ESPECIALLY for a NFL QB
This is exactly what happened with both of those quarterbacks. (In Young’s case it was longer than 3 years.) That’s why their names were brought up.
So are you saying that you are basing your theory on the fact that since Steve Young (a HOF’er) developed into a great QB that Kevin Kolb will do the same? lmao! REALLY?
Yea that makes perfect sense. Steve Young did it.. So why can’t Kevin Kolb.. ROFLMFAO!!!
In that case.. Since Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and ended up being the greatest player to ever play. We mind as well just throw random college walk on players in the NBA. Throw a season or 2 in the trash.. Just to see if the guy can develop into one of the greatest players ever because JORDAN DID IT..
What are you people smoking on? How do you all somehow already know that Kolb will be like Steve Young? How do you know?

Nobody knows that he was.
You said no one has ever rode the bench for three years and then started regardless of his wins and losses the first year.
We brought up how that has happened before.
No promises of anything, just saying that your statement was wrong.

THIS
I’m tired of people saying, “OMG u so stoopid, saying Kolb will be da next Steeve Young or aaron rogers just cause he sat for 3 years.” WE AREN’T SAYING THAT! We are saying that just because Kolb is sitting now doesn’t mean he’s done for. We are pointing out that quarterbacks HAVE become good after sitting on the bench for a few years at the start of their careers. We aren’t promising anything, we are just saying that all hope for Kolb is not lost. Extreme examples like the Jordan one phillyisback just used are not good arguments because they are one-shot examples, not repeated proof like Rodgers and Young are.
Are you dense?
I’m not saying anything about Kolb’s possible abilities!!! Read! You said something that was untrue. Two people pointed out that you were factually wrong. That’s all I said. The point is that teams have sat QBs for 3 years or more and then handed them the reigns outright. In these two specific cases, it worked out. I don’t know if it will work in our case. All I know is that I’d like to find out if it will work out well.
Whats sad is that there are teams out there that would do anything to have Vick. There are fans out there who are begging to have Vick.
Meanwhile, Vick is playing great for the eagles and half the fans would rather lose games with Kolb than win games with Vick.
I’ve never saw a QB play great and the fans demand an unproven QB to start anyway.
People wan’t Kolb to get a chance more than they wan’t the eagles to win a game.
Vick plays GREAT. but instead of hoping he continues to play great and win. People still would rather lose with Kolb.
and even worse – !!! People would rather go 2-14 with Kolb than make the playoffs with Vick
No, we'd rather see what we have in Kolb before it's too late to maximize the situation.
If Kolb isn’t great, we need to know now before we invest our future in him. If Vick starts, we can’t possibly know just what Kolb can do or how good he can be. That means it gets put off til next year. If Vick is gone and Kolb sucks next year, what then? Draft another QB to groom while the talents of our young team go wasted? All for a shot at the playoffs with a QB who has made a career out of being overrated because he can run real fast.
It’s not like Vick has ever proven himself in the playoffs either. McNabb got run out of town for failing in the post-season, but last time I checked a 9-7 playoff record with 5 NFC Championship appearances and one Super Bowl appearance is better than a 2-3 playoff record with one NFC Champ appearance and zero Super Bowl appearances. Where is all this optimism for Vick’s ability to lead us in the playoffs coming from?
No! You just don't like Vick!
((Draft another QB to groom while the talents of our young team go wasted? All for a shot at the playoffs with a QB who has made a career out of being overrated because he can run real fast. ))
-Grooming Kolb for a season or 2 will waste the talent of our young team anyway
-it’s Kolb and not the team that needs to develop
-You make it seem as though a shot at the playoffs isn’t a big deal
-Vick being overrated is your opinion.. you have a right to feel that way.. however. Kevin Kolb being the next Steve Young is absolutely boarder line retarded to even think..
If Kolb played the way Vick did.. I would be on these boards giving Kolb props. If Kafka played like Vick did.. Hell. I would be saying START KAFKA. shit.. If David Akers got in at QB and lit it up like Vick did, I would wan’t Akers to be the starting QB..
But I bet my last dollar that if Vick played as terrible as Kolb did for 2 quarters.. There is NO WAY YOU WOULDN’T BASH VICKS PERFORMANCE. because you don’t like Vick..
I figured it all out! You guys who want kolb to start are looking for the great white hope instead of the best chance to win. thats racist.. if kolb plays good.. GIVE ME KOLB. but Kolb Stunk it up.. Rodgers and Young were first round draft picks.
by phillyisback on Sep 22, 2010 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions
First of all, Kolb is already groomed.
Do you know how to read? Or do you purposefully misread so that you can make points that don’t have anything to do with the conversation at hand? I never said anything about grooming Kolb.
Kolb is already groomed. Now it’s time to see what he can do. You can’t know if Kolb is any good or not. He hasn’t had the chance to play enough to know how good he is. Unless he plays, we cannot know how good he can be. It is literally impossible. As in not possible in any way.
I have no opinion of Kolb. I don’t think he is the next Steve Young. I only think that possibility exists. Just as he could be Ryan Leaf. Neither you nor I can honestly say what Kolb will become because we haven’t seen enough of him to know. Fact.
I was saying that if we play Vick all year and then he signs on to another team, we will play Kolb next year. If Kolb is terrible, we will be stuck with him. We won’t have Vick to fall back on. We will then have to draft a new QB. That QB will then need to be groomed the way Kolb already was. That will take some time. One, two, three years. In that time we will have wasted the talents of good, young players.
A shot at the playoffs is a big deal, but so is a consistent shot at a Super Bowl. This team is built for future Super Bowl contention. I don’t want to miss the playoffs ever. Ever. But. BUT. If you give me a choice between three early round playoff exits OR missing the playoffs one year only to return to the Super Bowl within the next two, I will choose the Super Bowl one.
I do not believe Vick can get us to a Super Bowl. He made a career out of being dynamic, winning and getting to the playoffs. Then he shit the bed. I believe he will do that again.
Fuck you and your race-baiting. Read my history. I was pulling for McNabb as our QB 100%. I didn’t want to start the Kolb era yet because I thought McNabb gave us the best chance to win the Super Bowl right now. But the team went a different direction and now the situation has changed. The QB situation is unbalanced. Kolb is signed on long term. Vick will probably be gone next year. Starting Vick signals a belief in a Super Bowl victory. Otherwise, the move does not make sense. I personally do not trust Vick the way I trusted McNabb. I do not trust this defense yet. Therefore, I do not believe we will, or can, win the Super Bowl this year. That plays into the reason I do not want Vick starting.
If we win a Super Bowl with Vick I will be ecstatic. If we do not, it will have been a waste.
You didn’t figure anything out. You jumped to a race argument when it has nothing to do with anything. You know who else I think is destined to be overrated in the NFL? Tim Tebow. He’s as lilly white as they come and I wouldn’t want him anywhere near my Eagles.
NO!

No to what exactly?
Are you disagreeing with the undisputed fact that McNabb has outperformed Vick in the playoffs? Or do you disagree with maximizing Kolb’s situation?
Last time I checked McNabb still lost the only Super Bowl he's been to.
What exactly have you seen that makes you want to tough it out with Kolb? Seriously, I’m curious to know NOLA? Was it his 1 win versus Kansas City last year that gave you all this hope? I mean that was impressive and all but what was the Chiefs record again last year?
Brennan Huff: I have a belly full of white dog crap in me, and now you lay this shit on me?
I haven't seen anything yet!!
Holy fuck! That’s the point!
I want to see what Kolb is capable of. I want to know if he is the next Aaron Rodgers or the next Bobby Hoying before it’s too late. Watching him hold a clip-board isn’t seeing his potential. He needs experience. To get experience he needs to play.
Hypothetical: If Vick leaves after this year and Kolb ends up being terrible next year, what do the Eagles do at QB?
And Vick has done what exactly as compared to McNabb?
You cite Kolb’s performance against the Chiefs as being unimpressive because it was the Chiefs. Ok, fair enough. I actually made the same argument myself last year, but don’t let that interfere with your narrative.
How about Vick? You’re impressed because he beat the Lions I take it? How is that different exactly?
Or is it the fact that Vick has a history of being exciting and dynamic? What about his history of being inaccurate and under-performing when his running ability is shut down? You have to take both histories together. Until Vick proves he has truly improved (as in, does it several more times and against actually good teams), I will continue to believe he is overrated. I hope he proves me wrong.
"And Vick has done what exactly as compared to McNabb? "
Vick was in the NFC Championship game his 3rd year a s a starter. What was Kolb doing his 3rd year? That’s right sitting behind a proven winner. Oh by the way wehn Vick was drafted he beat out his competition in the off season to WIN the starting job.
I would love to blow up Texas Stadium... With team still in it
And he promptly got his ass spanked in that game.
Then he never even got close again.
And you say that Vick beat out his competition. Great. Going off preseason and training camp performances Kolb was light years ahead of Vick in terms of deserving the starting job. So I don’t see what the point is.
oh sure Kolb threw some nice spiral passes in training camp, big deal! atleast we know what Vick can do from the getgo especially now with him being back to pretty much 100%. i don’t know about you but i would definately take a guy thats carried his team and brung them 1 game away from a superbowl appearance instead of a guy who’s been rotting on the bench for years and apparently hasn’t learned anything yet.
it's not that i hate Kolb, i just think he SUCKS.
We don't know if Kolb hasn't learned anything yet.
He was never given the chance to show that. It is impossible to know how he will play. Vick can throw some nice spirals from the get go. Great. Now let’s see him consistently throw them to our receivers and not into double coverage or nowhere near anybody. We should know in a few weeks if Vick is worth the love he is getting.
By the way, I would actually prefer the guy that brought his team to the Super Bowl and gotten them close 4 other times. But that guy got traded in the spring.
i totally and 100% agree with you. i hated the idea of trading Mcnabb, still do. Maybe Kolb has learned something but so far from what we’ve seen (preseason / 1st game ) it wasn’t looking like he did. Vick on the other hand has come in and proven to us that he can WIN and he is just about back to 100%.
it's not that i hate Kolb, i just think he SUCKS.
thank god

Interesting Fact!
“Shaun Hill” the backup on the Lions put up the same kind of numbers Kolb did. Does that make him the next Troy Aikman? or Steve Young? like you asswhips somehow believe that Kolb is on his way to becoming!

I know we can make it to the playoffs with Vick.. but…..
LETS GO 2-16 TO SEE IF KOLB CAN BE LIKE JOE MONTANA IN 5 YEARS!
That makes perfect sense..
You are destroying the Vick haters, which probably are the McNabb haters also.
Just a hunch.

Nope.
I wanted McNabb over Kolb this year. But I don’t want Vick.
They are fundamentally different players, no matter their similarities. Vick used his athletic ability to create big, highlights plays. McNabb learned to use his athleticism to create bigger, smarter plays. McNabb is 10x the passer Vick historically has been. He is also more accurate and makes better decisions. Maybe Vick has truly turned into the complete package and has ceased to be overrated. But he has a lot of on-field history to overcome before I believe it. McNabb I believe can win. It’s why I wanted to stay on and why the Redskins seriously worry me this year in the division.
Sounds like a great plan, when can we get started?
Winning now is stupid, I want to wait around for 4-5 years so Kolb can develop goddammit!!

glad to see the comments trending more sensible
but remember this a site that two days ago where the thread writer was all behind the reid decision to put vick back on the bench. the kolb project has deep roots in these parts me thinks.
by andyfrombrooklyn on Sep 22, 2010 8:51 AM EDT reply actions
Yes it does have deep roots.
It is no secret. There is no “you thinks” about it. It’s a fact.
It makes the most sense for the team’s long term viability based on the offseason moves and the contract situations.
The blog commentariat has no responsibility to be bias-free. I would argue bias is what makes many blogs great because it exposes the truth to readers. You find a blog where you feel you fit in. You can’t do that without knowing the bias.
The blog was very much divided on McNabb-Kolb though. There was no clear bias then and the blog was in disarray for a while.
At the end of the day...
We will all be rooting for Vick and the Eagles.
Why you mad?
