Eagles Bringing In FB Owen Schmitt
Earlier, we noted that the Eagles were bringing in fullback Jason Davis for a workout. Now, Jeff McLane reports that they'll also be working out former Seattle Seahawks fullback Owen Schmitt.
The Eagles are working quickly to try and find a fullback to replace Leonard Weaver, who was lost for the season with an ACL tear yesterday against the Packers. No word yet on what the Eagles may do to fill Jamaal Jackson's roster spot, Jackson went down yesterday with torn biceps which typically can be a season ending injury,
Our Seahawks blog wrote a piece on Schmitt's progress this far in his career earlier this year. He was cut by the Seahawks after preseason.

Wow
That’s crushing to hear for such an amazing person… not to mention a Pro Bowler.
The position of FB isn’t a very difficult position to fill, but the role Weaver played on the field and in the locker room was huuuge. He will be sorely missed.
Prayers to Leonard and his family.
can u atleast give a the article and not just the website?
if ur gonna post wild speculations

That is awful. I hope for the best. I had the pleasure of meeting Leonard Weaver just last yr, when I worked down at the stadiums. Right after he signed, he came to an event, he pulled up in his car w/a friend and immediately, I didn’t recognize him. He looked like a wealthy guy, dressed very sharply and driving a nice car ( I think cadillac). And he joked about getting in, and I said sorry, he needed a pass. And he said, “Man, an Eagle can’t get free parking even in his own city”. I said I’m sorry, I recognize our players, but I didn’t know who he was, and he pulled out his license, sure enough it was Leonard Weaver. And I apologized, and he laughed and said no worries, asked my name, and said it was a pleasure to meet me, and said he would come back later in the season and hook me up w/a shirt or something. I told him no worries at all, no need for all that, but it was nice to meet him. We talked for a little bit longer about how I think the eagles need a guy like him for locker room presence, and just a big back for goal line situations. I mentioned they should have signed Lamont Jordan yrs ago, and he laughed and made a joke about him being better than Jordan now, and I said I heard he was a good leader, like Cecil Martin, another friendly FB. He said that he hopes he can just help the team (very pc answer) and then he was on his way. I used to meet players for all four teams everyday, but only a few really stood out as being really great people, not just good athletes. I never had a bad encounter at all, but Leonards was a great encounter. I wish nothing but the best for Mr. Weaver and his family, and hope he has a speedy recovery, and DEF. hope to see him back on the field soon.

From Reid's presser today
On whether Weaver’s torn ACL is career threatening:
"Well, they’re going to have to get in there and see exactly [what is wrong with it]. That’s why I just labeled it as I did. I think we all saw it, it wasn’t a pretty picture. So, from ACL standpoints it was severe. They won’t know the further damage, if any, until they get in there. But obviously, just from the look of things, it was severe."

Gotta love those fullbacks that bleed from their forehead.

Jake Grove?
A friend told me he heard Jake Grove may be in the conversation as a replacement/reserve at C.
I wouldn’t mind seeing that at all.
Mean/Nasty player
I hope Schmitt or Davis is a just a mean and nasty player… I think Philly needs to just get nasty and make some mean and vicious tackles and hits. Not those pussy Asante samuals hits where players bounce off him. I mean those take your head off hits.
yes that goes for Offensive players too

i can see it now..
He follows mccoy around to pick up fumbles and run them in for 7.
2010-11 Predictions:
Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.
Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith
Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks
11-5 finish.

why fullback?
I’m on my cell so I can’t pull any stats.. but how necessary is it to even freaking have a full back any more? Weaver was gifted, sure… but reid runs the ball less than even mike martz. Why a full back? Hell, on a 4 and 1 situation, I think everyone realises a fullback is probably not coming into the game…
I can’t believe we arnt deeper at center.

you are absolutely right. They are just going to have him suit up on stand on the sidelines anyway.

Do you guys really think we don't need a FB?
I don’t think there are a whole lot of stats to tell you whether or not we need one, you would just need to know something about the game of football, which is asking a lot today apparently.
BGN is giving me fits today . . . can’t someone come in here and help me out.
wow dickhead
Thanks for being a ray of sunshine in the conversation.
First, there are stats I saw showing that the eagles success rate with weaver in actually declined our run average. We were more successful running out of single back and out of wildcat formations than with a 2 back set.
Point 2: I can think of two teams off the top of my head that do not have a full back: seattle (which is a bad example) and indy. I think indy knows a little bit about winning (though they didn’t in week 1).
Finally, andy reid doesn’t run the ball frequently anyway. Teams key on the 2 back set and look for the run. Out of the of the 1 back set we are more successful, anyway.
My final point is that when in an obvious running situation like 4 and 1, i’d like to think that we’d call a wildcat or something spread. (Anything smarter than a qb draw)
But thanks again for being a typical eagle fan. WIP is >>>> that way.

if by typical Eagles fan . . .
you mean a former player who knows the game like the back of his hand . . . than thanks. I am the typical Eagles fan.
Having a FB on the team is not something that can be measured with stats. I mean how exactly are we going to have a short yardage offense AT ALL?
Finally, andy reid doesn’t run the ball frequently anyway. Teams key on the 2 back set and look for the run. Out of the of the 1 back set we are more successful, anyway.
Football 101 lesson for you . . . its called play action. Where are the stats on play action in a two back set?
You justify all this by telling me there are two teams that don’t have a FB . . . 2 out of 32 NFL teams. Which BTW is wrong, because both teams have FB’s . . . Ganther on the Seahawks, and a variety of TE/H-Backs on the Colts that line up at FB from time to time.
And don’t give me “there are stats that show” . . . please, what a veiled attempt at making a real argument.
My final point is that when in an obvious running situation like 4 and 1, i’d like to think that we’d call a wildcat or something spread. (Anything smarter than a qb draw)
You think that we won’t be predictable if we do “wildcat or something spread” every short yardage situation? Of all the short yardage issues this team has had over the last two plus seasons, not once has anyone here recommended we get rid of our FB. I would love to see that offered up as a solution to our short yardage situations and see how BGN responds.
You don’t have to agree with me . . . but don’t insult me by saying I don’t know the game. Your logic really calls into question YOUR knowledge of the game. You sound like you learned it by playing XBOX.
I'm just going to be honest
@zoso7374 no disrespect, but you are full of shit.

in regards to what? being a former player?
Its not like I said a former Eagle. Is it so crazy to think a few people here actually played the game of football? Get lost dude . . . BGN is not for your brand of posting, we actually try to have real conversations here.
the shit you were spouting made minimal sense and really didnt make a valid point...

You won’t find many stats on a FB anyway. If you don’t think a FB is necessary, you don’t know much about football.
If you're wondering whether or not we need a FB
all you need to do is re-watch the 4th and 1 play at the end of the game.
Weaver would’ve been in that play in place of McCoy and if you go back and watch it again, you’ll see McCoy (and Celek) get blown up by Clay Matthews. I’d put money on that being converted with Weaver in there instead of McCoy.
that is a stupid thing to say. We don’t need a fullback. Not to be a jerk, but really. Reid uses his FB alot more than other coaches. How many times was Weaver in on passing situations last yr? ALOT. He is a better blocker than any RB we have on the team, so if they require the back to block out of the Shotgun, than Weaver would be that guy. Also, on short passing downs, how many times was Weaver out there running a good route? He had some clutch receptions last yrs. The fullback is a vital part of 9 out of 10 teams gameplans, not only for running situations. Most fullbacks are better blockers than there running back counter parts. And this isn’t about Weaver. Watch Tony Richardson play, or Lorenzo Neil tapes.
ARGHHHH
