FB Jason Davis to work out for Eagles

Photo

According to the National Football Post via Jason Davis' twitter, Davis is on his way to Philly to try out for the Eagles.  The Eagles have to replace Leonard Weaver, who is out for the season with a gruesome looking ACL tear suffered yesterday against Green Bay.  Evidently, Davis also wears number 43.

Yup.

I hate to say it, but I think we can still recover from Weavers loss. He was a luxury, not a necessity. I think Davis should be fine. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Buckley be cut or replaced soon. He cost us that game yesterday with his stupid penalties, and fumble.

I only mention Buckley,

because w/ the loss of Weaver, Buckley becomes your big back now.

What? No,

Buckley is 208lbs and was the 3rd RB that plays special teams. Mike Bell is 226lbs and is the 2nd RB that was and still is the short yardage and occasionally Spell’s RB for McCoy.

Bell had a sweet run in the first half. Think there was a hold though…

18 games

Isn’t this game indicative of why an 18 game season is a bad idea? Injuries can happen at any time and 2 extra games only increases the chance of a player getting a career threatening injury or a concussion.

by JoshuaR on Sep 13, 2010 10:00 AM EDT reply actions

Why Do we need a fullback? We don't run the ball

McCoy had 7 rushing plays. Philly had 34 passing attempts and 8 rushing plays.
why do we need a fullback if we aren’t going to run the ball anyway.

Just call him a blocking back (for the quarterback), not for the running back (which is not really a running back)

by Eagles_DevilDawg on Sep 13, 2010 10:03 AM EDT reply actions

Let’s be fair here… Once you’re down 17 points, the running game pretty much takes a back seat, regardless of what team it is. You don’t get back in the game and put yourself in a position to tie it late in the fourth quarter by running the ball to catch up…

i was thinking the same! maybe the injury to weaver was the factor that we didn´t run the ball anymore! maybe with weaver still in the game we would have had 13-17 rush attempts!

by daveG10 on Sep 13, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

study eagles history with Reid. That guys doesn’t believe in running the ball. I’m not saying that running the ball is our savoir…. and i’m not football god, but what is the point of having a running back you don’t use.

by Eagles_DevilDawg on Sep 13, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but history is history. Given an unproven qb it could be quite possible that we plan to run more. This particular game didn’t allow it. Let’s wait a few more before we assume things won’t change.

This is going to sound like a horribly cold assessment, but it’s not supposed to be. From a football perspective, atleast it’s forcing the team to get a real fullback for the season. I love Weaver and it’s a horrible injury, but if he just had a severely sprained knee and was going to miss 4 or 6 weeks to recover, you know the team would just use the super glue and duct tape strategy of using some other player out of position instead of getting an actual fullback that can block for a month and a half. I, for one, would rather not revisit the failed conversion days of Dan Klecko and Tony Hunt. With that said, I wish Weaver a speedy recovery and can’t wait to see him back next season.

He’ll be a better fullback than Eldra was

by HankM on Sep 13, 2010 10:35 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Eldra Buckley

Had a bad game as did the rest of the offense. Although he isn’t the answer at fullback, he shouldn’t get cut. He wasn’t adequately prepared to fill in for Weaver.

by greendemon on Sep 13, 2010 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

Adequately prepared? C’mon. This is the NFL. If you’re on the team and dressed you should be prepared to play and participate. He looked terrible.

by DonnyD on Sep 13, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah. Does that include the Fair Catch blitz play? This guy isn’t smart enough to play in the NFL.

And he’s not that good. There has to be someone on waviers we can claim for his spot. Another Center for needed depth now?

....When does football season start again???

by SpursEaglesFanSanAntonio on Sep 13, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

If Buckley is cut for a mistake and a bad game, a lot of other people from yesterdays game should be cut too, including Kolb. This isn’t a fair assessment but just jumping on and saying lets cut Buckley. Everyone had a bad game yesterday… except for maybe Vick.. and you could say that even he cost us the game instead of running it in for a TD that one play instead of forcing it to Jackson or not getting stuffed on the 4th and 1 play.

Its week one, game one, against the Packers… lets see how we do next week. The lions will definitely put up a fight.

What happened to Weaver was unfortunate but Davis should be able to help out a bit. Hopefully the coaches like what the see.

He had a sense on entitlement on the show. Without any real reason to I might add. He will serviceable.

Good to hear. When Weaver went down I knew we would be calling whoever they cut since they had 3 decent FB’s.

Still it was painful to see weaver be pulled off the field.

I thought we had Jason Davis on the PS a few years ago

by DLawrence55 on Sep 13, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I know he was on the Bears, then the Jets claimed him on waviers.

Actually the cardinals claimed him on waviers like 3 weeks ago, then dropped the claim for someone else.

We signed him as an undrafted free agent in ‘06. He’s bounced around the league since then.

by DonnyD on Sep 13, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Is there a UVA grad on this blog?

I was always a big fan of Rayshawn Jackson (sp. ?). Decent runner and receiver. I think the Panthers drafted him, but I don’t know where he is now; I don’t think he made the team. Is that guy worth a look?

If Kolb has another shaky start to the wounded lions

Vick needs to come in for good. Kolb looked worse than Matt Lineart in that game, and I hate matt lineart!

Lets not be hasty. We don’t even know if Kolb will play this week. Besides, last season the Pack were the one of the best defenses in the league. If Kolb plays we will eviscerate the Lions D.

by DonnyD on Sep 13, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd rather play it safe altogether

Let’s rest rest Kolb for a few, just to be sure. We don’t need him back as soon as he can spell some words backwords and walk a straight line.

Vick seems to be doing well in his backup role, let’s see if we can ride that for a game or two. Don’t turn Kolb into Eric Lindros.

I am very surprised by the lack of knowledge of Jason Davis on BGN

we was tabbed in the offseason as our starter at FB a few years ago, and if nothing else, you should remember him from that camp. He was on our practice squad for two years after we signed him as an UFA.

Also . . . I hate to tell you guys, but Buckley is NOT getting cut. He had a tough game yes, but not enough to warrant him getting cut, especially since we lost a RB for the year.

by zoso7374 on Sep 13, 2010 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

while zoso is correct about all things Jason Davis, I don't blame you for not knowing who the guy was...

He did lose out to DT (Dan Klecko) for the FB spot two years ago. I think Eldra stays as the 3rd running back. The penalties didn’t lose us the game, but they didn’t help. I think Andy was right in saying they all shared the loss. The O was awful the first half and the D was terrible for the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Special Teams was worse then Ohio State’s. Bobby April needs to do something. Jason “Self-entitlement” Davis knows the system and looked good on Hard Knocks but ya he came off as a giant douche (think any Jay Cutler interview you’ve ever heard). I think we also sign Chip Vaughn off practice sqaud after putting Jamaal and Lenoard on IR.

by NJEagle on Sep 13, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know . . .

I didn’t think Jason Davis sounded bad at all. If I recall correctly, they segued his interview with one of the coaches talking about how guys that are fighting for roster spots need to feel like they belong in the NFL and feel like they should be starting. They used Jason Davis to make this point. There were also notable moments when coaches said that Davis could start elsewhere in the NFL.

by zoso7374 on Sep 13, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Davis didn’t come off as a bad guy to me on Hard Knocks. He had competitiveness to him that waned towards the end but who’s wouldn’t. He said it best “he was between a legend (TRich) and an upstart (JConner)”. He had no shot and wanted his touches to show what he can do.

I’d sign him to fill half of Weavers shoes and then I’d still cut Buckley. His play was reprehensible.

by andyreidswaistline on Sep 13, 2010 12:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The Eagles are also working out Owen Schmitt.

He’s the guy that smacked him self in the head and made a huge gash on his forehead wile running out during the player introductions with the Seahawks a couple of years ago.

In regards to my earlier post, I said Buckley wasn’t adequately prepared. Let me rephrase, he didn’t “game plan” accordingly.
