Eagles Release First Depth Chart
With the preseason opener just 5 days away, the Eagles have released their first unofficial depth chart. There's not a whole lot of surprises, but I thought there were a few things of note.
Hank Baskett is ahead of rookie Riley Cooper for the 4th WR spot. One former Na Brown award winner vs a strong contender for this year's award. Speaking of guys we thought could win the Na this year, Chad Hall is way down the chart behind even Jordan Norwood.
Nick Cole is your starting center with Mike McGlynn & A.Q. Shipley behind him in that order. Austin Howard, who has drawn a lot of praise at camp, is the backup LT while King Dunlap is the backup on the right side.
Charles Scott is listed as the backup fullback, a position that most likely won't exist on the 53 man roster. Not a great sign for him and given that he hasn't impressed at camp, he has to be considered a long shot to make the roster.
Juqua Parker is still listed as the starting LDE with Brandon Graham backup him up.
Ellis Hobbs is your starting RCB. Nate Allen starts at FS with Quintin Demps as his backup. Today at camp Andy Reid was asked whether Demps was pushing Allen for the starting job.
"That's very accurate. He has been making plays and he's doing well and that sure is a plus. That's why we brought him here and drafted him. We put him in a position last year where he's a young player trying to step in and fill in and he had a few mistakes and it didn't work out for him there. But, he had a great offseason and he's come back, I thought, very strong in this camp."

Charles Scott
This is as depressing and irritating as the Tony Hunt situation. Our bugaboo for, oh, the better part of a decade has been inability to convert on 3rd and really short. Of course, all the big backs we get don’t have hands like Roger Craig and funny enough, running up the middle with out of the singleback set with 3 wide and a TE with a smaller RB really… just doesn’t work.
I understand that if Charles Scott were in the game, it would scream running play, but c’mon. Leonard Weaver can’t block for himself. It’s also fairly gratifying to let the defense know that hey, we’re going to do something, and you still won’t be able to stop us.
I don’t know why I bother to get my hopes up, anymore.
Er, instead of “with out,” just “out.”

couldnt agree more
if andy doesnt plan on keeping them because they cant catch, then why on earth does he bother drafting them at all? if there is one thing that big red always drives me crazy on, its this lack of giving bigger backs a shot. hopefully bell will stay healthy and be productive as the short yardage back
It's like Hank, the rightfielder, is passing the ball on to the next rightfielder, and saying, 'Here it is, kid. Catch it.'"
It's not just catching
Scott didn’t look very impressive running the ball when I was at camp.

In that case.
Mike Bell had better work out for the short yardarge stuff. And be used appropriately!
But it does beg the question, why bother drafting Charles Scott in the first place?
by Eagle Fly Free on Aug 9, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Same Reason
you go get Westbrook, Staley , Eldra andanyone else that you can eye out and might be able to make into something. Scott was gonna be your long term change of pace back if he showed he can be ready for it. But he’s having a really bad camp. Plus it made Eldra play a lot better for that 3rd RB spot and for a 2nd year guy, I would be putting pressure on him too.
by Bono Hit My Car on Aug 9, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Bell is better.
Scott was given a chance. They kicked his tires and he doesn’t fit. You draft the kid because just because LSU didn’t throw him the ball doesn’t mean he can’t catch. I like the draft and release. They knew they had Bell and went for younger and maybe upside. Bell runs low to the ground and is a one cut and ram type guy. He is more than enough for our short yardage.

ah ok
i had seen good things at the beginning of camp. shows that hype and high hopes dont get you very far. from one jason to another, thanks for the update!
It's like Hank, the rightfielder, is passing the ball on to the next rightfielder, and saying, 'Here it is, kid. Catch it.'"
I was afraid of that with him.
He was known as a power back. But I looked at his youtube video. And I noticed he ran really high, and on a lot of his big runs, he got little contact. He never really bowled over anyone. At least not on the videos.
I would have liked Blount better, but he is a knuckle head.
In Kolb we trust
Buckley has had a much better camp. Keep in mind, there are 4 preseason games, and I expect Scott to get his share of looks carrying the football.
Formerly Bye, Dawk :(
I just remember Buckley having his problems last year, but he got the chance to play his way out of them. Now, he had the luxury of “battling” Lorenzo Booker. But he and Booker were basically the same player
Kind of unfortunate that Scott has to battle a motivated Buckley, but they’re two different players. Scott gives a dimension that Buckley simply cannot provide, so it’d be a shame not to allow him to develop too
What dimension?
Eldra hits the hole a lot harder than Scott has shown, plus he can play special teams and catch the ball. Scott looks more one dimensional than Eldra to me.
by Bono Hit My Car on Aug 9, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions
he means to say that Scott is physically larger
which for some reason is a direct causative correlation to “talented rb capable of gaining important yards” in many people’s minds.
I’ll disagree that Buckley and Booker are the same player. Around the same size? OK. But they’re very different. Buckley runs hard. Booker would go down if you breathed on him.
Now, I can understand the appeal of Scott, since he’s a bigger back that (in theory) could pick up a yard or 2 when they need a first down. But I just haven’t seen it. I’ll come up with a totally unrealistic scenario… A guy comes up to me, puts a gun to my head, and says, “It’s 3rd and 1. You have your choice of Scott or Buckley to pick up the first down. If they don’t get it, you’re dead. Who’s it gonna be?” There’s be no hesitation whatsoever on my part – From what I’ve seen in camp, I’d take Buckley.
Scott looked good to me the very first day I was there (July 31st), but as camp has progressed, he hasn’t shown anything. And furthermore, he absolutely no threat whatsoever in the passing game. Still 4 preseason games to go, but right now, my feeling is that he’s on the outside looking in.
Formerly Bye, Dawk :(
My point is that Buckley was tentative last year and had trouble catching the ball…and blocking. But he was given a year in the offense to work out the kinks. So yeah, now he’s hitting the hole and doing work.
At the end of the year, what will we have? McCoy and Buckley, probably. Bell may well not make it through the season, but even if, we most likely will not resign him. So, we’ll have to draft another RB. This could well be after another year of missing short yardage conversions. I’d rather keep Scott around to have him grow into the offense than start over again with another guy we’ll probably give a shot for 6 weeks then cut.
suup jimmyk .... waves......
woman !, dont try to understand em, dont try to make them understand you, for they are a breed apart ! lol
Cut them both Buckley will never see the field
and if he does all is lost. He isn’t horrible but he isn’t and shouldn’t ever start.

Not one person mentioned the practice squad
If Scott can’t contribute right away, I’d rather he continue to look crappy so no one will want to snag him off our P-Squad.
It’s funny how some people get all bent out of shape. God forbid a 6th round pick doesn’t pan out!!!

Lets pray..........
im not a big church person but im praying that nothing happens 2 Winston because just seeing Queen Dunlap in the #2 rt slot sends shivers down my spine. How in the hell could we not have found a sensible backup by now and why is he even still on the team, i understand Andy wants 2 give him a chance but hes had a few by now and as good as Juan is hes not gonna turn chicken shit into chicken salad.
we thought the same thing about justice
and he made a few believers out of us. while i agree our offensive line (starters and depth) is a weakness, give king dunlap some burn before you write him off completely.
Andrews is worlds better than Dunlap, yes, and the key is that Dunlap appears to no longer hold the backup left tackle position. You can get by with moving a decent guard over to RT, but LT is a different matter altogether. You want a solid performer over there to protect the blind side if anything happens to Jason Peters. Is Austin Howard good enough, especially as a rookie? I don’t know, but he might be, and that’s more than we can say for Dunlap.
Also, much like Justice, or Robert Gallery in Oakland, Dunlap could end up doing better when moved to RT or guard. Left tackle is a much harder position, and a bad left tackle can often turn out to be a great guard or right tackle.
offensive line
Am I the only person concerned about our offensive line. Kolb could be the second coming but no matter how good he is if we have a weak offensive line he’s going to look like shit.. no matter how good our weapons are….
Concerned with our offensive line? What is this glaring problem that you speak of??

For those who have been at TC...
Regarding backup CB, I keep reading things about Linley but Macho is ahead of him. I’m assuming its because maybe Lindley is a rookie, but who as looked more impressive at CB between the 2?

My thought
I know we have a ton of money tied up in Hanson, and the coaches may really like him, but if it came down to keeping Hanson or Harris, I think we’d go with Harris. I’d much rather have Lindley and Harris
Don’t know if this is accurate, but it sounded like Harris was doing really well until he pulled his hammy.
I would rather harris

I predicted: we would trade mcnabb, draft a DE in the first round (95% of this board wanted Earl Thomas or Berry and thought we would get him). I also predicted we would trade up to get one.
I also predicted we would resign Cole, Avant, and Weaver.

You made a couple nice calls, and JimmyK actually called Brandon Graham. You guys did way better than me. There were definitely some offseason things, like Tapp and Sims, that nobody really saw coming. And at that point the depth at which they were going to gut and quickly recraft the team was not yet clear, so you’re forgiven for some of your misses.
But are you really giving yourself credit for “predicting” they’d resign Avant and Weaver? lol

… It looks like Coleman, Chaney and Owens, the three 7th rounders, all have shots.
I think there’s a chance all of them are either on the roster, come down with a phantom season-ending injury or join our practice squad.
But I’m also not going to predict the end of the Eagles’ run of success if we cut a 6th or 7th rounder. Most teams draft a Rashad Barksdale or two each year (and I actually just saw that guy on another team’s cut list a few days ago), it’s nothing to worry about.

few suprises here
thanks for the link jimmyk, but some things stood out here. Todd not on the depth chart yet really worries me. If MJG is our starting LG im guessing our runs will be going to the right side. Martell Mallet behind Buckley and JJ says he isn’t making the team. Kelly Washington behind Dobson Collins says the same thing. I know Trevard Lindley is a 3rd string cb on the right side but I see him moving up very quickly. Finally, let’s not get too carried away with this depth chart before our first pre-season game starts. If Charles Scott is running over defenders or Brandon Graham is racking up sacks these guys will move up. It’s important to do well in practice but it’s essential to do well in games.

Mike Bell
is wayyyy better than you think bro. He was stuck in Denver for a few years and played in a RB carousel. Same with NO. Bush is too athletic not to have on the field and Pierre is a solid solid back. But Bell still found ways into the game and carried as much as many as second depth chart backs from the 3rd spot. You’ll see you will see!

Its not the size of the running back
that gets you short yardage conversions, its the ability of the line, especially the guards, to move the D-Line back to convert. The problem for us is if Todd isn’t healthy or if Stacy either isn’t healthy or isn’t as good as he was 2 years ago we will be passing it on every 3rd down no matter if its 3rd and an inch. Love that we traded down to get Brandon Graham but we will be wishing we didn’t go after Mike Iupati if Stacy isnt up to par this season.

Jason Avant as #3 Holder
Brillaint. He has the best hands on the team, so why not use him as the contingency plan? That’s excellent.

i don’t know why, but i find it rather funny. you would think joselio and maclin are easy names to say.
How embarrassing
I’ve been pronouncing his name “Make-lean” the whole time.

Offensive line depth?- Nein!
Howard, Tupou, McGlynn, Reynolds, Dunlap?
Please get well Herremans because the interior of his line isn’t even an average unit the ‘depth’ listed on this chart is as bad as anyone in the NFL at OL.
Macho Harris Fan Club
President DSmith215 issued a statement earlier today to the members of the ‘Macho Harris Fan Club’ that contrary to some speculation that Harris might be in danger of not making this roster that he is listed as 2nd on the depth chart on the RCB even though Patterson/Lindlay have supposedly played well so far.
Vice-President WildEagle went on to assert that Harris is a ‘stud’ who will be an important contributor to the Eagles this year.
He definitely is one of the most decisive players on here. DSmith215 and WildEagle are two of his biggest supporters but there were plenty of others.
I am another one.
He got an unfair shake last year. He’s gonna be a really good CB for us.

I'll join
cause I kinda thought both him and Justice got bad raps from most people I know. Both of those players were playing out of their natural positions which made them look worse than they are.

I'm pissed.
I think they’re really misusing him.
Macho’s strengths are his tackling, his comparative strength, and his aggressiveness.
They need to stick him behind Mikell and let him learn how to be a Strong Safety. He’s well suited for that position and poorly suited to play CB on this defense. Macho would be a great Cover 2 corner, but if he’s gonna play for the Eagles, I think he needs to be at SS.

I can't understand why
he has a fan club????? HE HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING.
Take the name off the back of the jersey's and reinvent football as a team sport.
Pay these guys 3,000,000 a year tops and match them dollar for dollar in a global indexed pension. Eliminate the irresponsibility by being responsible for making young kids over night millionaires.

You and me both. He only got the job by default at FS because Demps was performed poorly in training camp/preseason games & had a crappy attitude to boot.
Harris wound up losing his job quit quickly to Jones and only got it back down the stretch but Jones was one of the worst FS in the league. Even then, Harris didn’t show much especially in coverage & ability to read opposing offenses.
He was also largely a zero on special teams play. Laughably bad as a KR in his short stint and make little/no impact on special teams coverage.
Macho's fan club
I can’t understand why
he has a fan club?
You, sir, have never met a Virginia Tech fan. They’re a little, um, how you say … insane.
Also, Macho was a stud at Highland Springs and at VT, so he’s had plenty of time and good games to build up said fan club. He certainly came into the NFL with more fanfare than most 5th round picks, and him being thrust into the role last year probably made him look bad — I’ve been critical — but at the same time, he’s got some fans on the coaching staff, so he must not suck that bad.

I have heard and/or seen literally everyone else on the team except for that guy…
