John Clayton Ranks Kolb 24th Among Quarterbacks
Here are some thoughts regarding Clayton's article:
First of all, Clayton has his list broken down into three categories: The Elite, The Chad Pennington Division, and The Hit-Or-Miss Division.
The Elite includes the usual suspects; Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, and Brett Favre round out the top 5. Donovan McNabb is number 9 on the list.
I assume the Pennington division got its name for talented QBs who are not as talented as the guys in the elite class or who are on the comeback trail. This includes guys like Jay Cutler, Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Matt Hasselbeck, and Kyle Orton.
I hate to admit it, but I agree with Clayton's analysis, which is as follows:
24. Kevin Kolb, Philadelphia Eagles
Analysis: Kolb is the perfect quarterback for Andy Reid's West Coast offense, which is why the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins. Kolb is a rhythm passer out of three- and five-step drops, and he should have a big statistical year.
Chance of being elite: 50 percent
He is ranked second in his category, behind second-year man Mark Sanchez, who is widely expected to lead his Jets to the Super Bowl this season. It's tough to rank him any higher because this is his first year as a starter. He is unproven and he isn't guaranteed to be a success. This is the reality of the situation. His first two starts last year gave us reason to be excited; but the growing pains will be there, make no mistake. I wish for the sake of my nerves he was ranked higher, as it's just plain rough to see him ranked with the likes of Chad Henne, Byron Leftwich, and Matt Leinart. Kolb's got a ton to prove, and I realize that his subpar preseason gave us all a few moments of pause. I was among the more vocal supporters of Kolb when we were all arguing over who should be our starter this year, and I'll stand by that decision. If I wind up being wrong, I'll accept it, admit it, and move on. We can talk all day about how he needs the offensive line to come together, but whether that happens or not, he's going to have to show that he learned something after spending three seasons riding the pines. Performances like he had against Kansas City won't fly for long...the organization really stuck their necks out for him by trading away the most successful quarterback in franchise history in order to move him up to starter. The fact that they traded McNabb to a division rival gives Kolb even less margin of error. There is much less wriggle-room for Kolb then people realize. That said, the preseason matters not; I just hope that deer-in-the-headlights dazed look in Kolb's eyes during the KC game are gone in time for the showdown against Green Bay.

It’s only rough to see him ranked that low if you take John Clayton’s word as Bible, and I don’t think anyone does that. Keep in mind, in Clayton’s “power rankings,” he has the Eagles ranked 22nd. I’ll repeat that – John Clayton things the Eagles are better than just 10 teams in the NFL.
I always thought Clayton had a hard-on for the Eagles...
but after this offseason I have come to find out his hard-on only had an “eye” for McNabb. He has stated so far this year that the Redskins are now superbowl contenders, that they will win the division, and as stated before the Eagles now are in the bottom tier of the NFL.

What does this have to do with his ability to analyze players/games or get stories. I guess we need more ex-athletes like Montana, Dickerson, Sanders or Saragusa to add their brilliance.

thank you
Tired of the clayton jokes.. he’s wrong, let’s focus on that, and not how someone looks.
2010-11 Predictions:
Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.
Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith
Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks
11-5 finish.

Yeah, right
Kolb has looked very good this preseason to me…the O-Line has not played well, but Kolb has evaded the rush and generally made good decisions. When DJax has been in the game, he’s looked like a pro-bowler. To me, Kolb’s success has more to do with whether DJax plays without injury. I was much more discouraged with the play of Celek and Maclin in the preseason than I was Kolb.

KK has had his ups and downs and he was terrible last week. It is almost impossible to get a read on 5+ quarters in 3 nearly meaningless games but he was ‘not looked very good’ as the overall numbers bare that out.
And...
And DJax missed all but the first play, being held out for precautionary reasons. Maclin just does not spread the defenses, but he is a serviceable #2, particularly if Celek is playing up to par. With DJax, Kolb is great. Without him, and with an O-Line underperforming, he’s going to look like a rookie.

What I think is weird
is stuff like this
Performances like he had against Kansas City won’t fly for long
And that’s no knock on jaws1385 for writing it, as most anyone on BGN could’ve written that sentence. But that’s what I think is so unnatural about a preseason game and trying to analyze it much.
Midseason, you can have a shitty quarter or two and rally the team to victory and even on a bad day statistically that can be a good outcome (“he showed grit”) or you can go in at halftime, sketch something up and come out and have a great second half.
I realize it’s impossible for us not to analyze what we’ve seen in the preseason, but it’s a mirage. It’s not real. Some teams are running their real playbooks and some aren’t. Some teams are using their real personnel groups and some aren’t. There are no halftime adjustments because the same people aren’t even playing both halves.
It’s like looking at the layup lines before a basketball game and trying to figure out who’s going to win. :D … Okay, not quite, but it’s just hard to make much of anything, good or bad, out of guys’ overall performances. You can see things like “wow, Brandon Graham has burst off the line” but you can’t really judge a QBs effectiveness since so many factors would be different in a real game.

'Wing it' methodology
This is almost completely arbitrary. What makes an ‘elite’ QB? Individual numbers? Team performance?
Accordings to my rankings, Kolb has:
- 0.2% chance of being “Holy Shit this should have his own video game”
- 2% chance of being “Totally awesome dude”
- 28% of being ‘Elite-like"
- 42% of being ’Solid man. Solid."
- 21% of being "Talk the talk but can’t walk the walk"

"almost completely arbitrary"
Yup. More or less filler in lieu of actual games to analyze.
Thing is, people looooove lists and get fired up by predictions. Tried and true go-to move for football writers.

HAHAHAH ..ehmm k...Classic!
….Marjuwanna’s bad for you ehm K…..Kevin Kolb is bad for the Eagles ehmmm k….. I like big penises in the bum hole ehmm k
KOLB is a natural born leader - something the Eagles haven't had on offense in a long long time. Prediction, we win a SB in the next 3 years.
I have problems with anyone that says that Rothelisberger is the 4th best QB in the league, and its got nothing to do with the off the field stuff. I would take Aaron Rodgers over him any day.
2 reasons
comebacks
superbowls
Even if im not a fan of his, thats why he’s up there

Yes he is.
I just want Dixon to take over the Steelers FOREVER. Why? Because I have no respect whatsoever for Big Ben.
For all the crap we give Wil Wheaton, he can still tackle better than Asante Samuel...
The various schools of the Big Ten should let Ohio State and Michigan know in no uncertain terms that dissent will NOT be tolerated.

NFC East QBs
Here’s what the preseason looks like:
Tony Romo: 21/36 (58%); 1TD; 2 INTs
Donovan McNabb: 16/34 (47%); 1TD; 1 INT
Eli Manning: 13/26 (50%); 0TD; 1INT
Kevin Kolb: 28/53 (53%); 0TD; 1INT
Can’t say Kolb has been outperformed by anyone here. So if you’ve been disappointed in his preseason performance, understand he’s in good company in the division
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
sure...i understand that completely
again, I’m just saying he hasn’t been so bad that I’ve lowered my expectations. He’s been as good as his competition, and so my evaluation of him remains pretty much the same as it did before the preseason
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
Right on J1
We don’t know for sure how good he’s gonna end up being, but nuttin so far has worried me nor changed my view of him thus far given the current situation (s). I already know that he will go through growing pains, and the preseason is where one can grow without the effects of losing when it counts. Those numbers above show that he isn’t far off in the division. And it’s also a reminder that this is indeed the preseason

Wow, that's one of the most level headed posts on Kolb I've ever read here
I agree Kolb has the tools and team around him to be successful, but like you and Clayton said, he has to prove it before I can rank him any higher.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Kolb is zero
in my book so far. Lets see him as a starter before we say boo.

Your QB will be good to great
you guys worry too much about outside opinions. Dude will be fine.
John Clayton Who?
Who is this joker? Looks like he never played or even looked at sports growing up. Now he’s an expert on everything football. He should be working in someones FO. I wonder why no team have offered this genius a contract. Some people are just good at putting other people and things down. That’s the basic requirement for being a critic-negativity.
