So I'm putting this out there because I haven't seen it yet. I've seen a lot of good things said about Allen, but I've also heard a lot of good things about Na Brown award finalist Kurt Coleman. Some people have even gone far enough to say that they hope Coleman beats out Allen for the starting FS job. While I believe that's a little over the top, Coleman does seem to be a quality player who should start one day in this league. His story seems to mirror Quintin Mikell's a little bit. 7th rounder/UDFA, making a big splash early, and hopefully Coleman will be a standout special teamer and fill-in DB like Mikell was. I remember one goal line stuff he had the year before he was a full time starter and asking who the hell that was.
I guess my question is, do you think Coleman could eventually prompt the Eagles to let Mikell's contract run out and promote him to the starting SS role? He's hitting thirty this year, which is also the last year of his deal (maybe second to last?). I could easily see a scenario where the Eagles give him a 3 year deal with the intent of developing Coleman. Mikell wasn't particularly strong this past year and I'm not sure if we'll see a whole lot more this year. Depending on his play this year, the Eagles could let Mikell's contract run out altogether and move Coleman up in the depth chart next year.
Is he taking snaps at SS? Where's he practicing?
(PS- Sorry for my confusion about Mikell's status. The Eagles' salary cap site said he had a 4 year extension from the 2007 offseason, so I'm slightly confused as to whether or not he hits free agency next offseason or the following. I assume its summer of 2011, but not 100%)
(PPS- I know he made the Pro Bowl, but that secondary was pretty shitty and Mikell was a part of it.)
