Please excuse the misspellings. My laptop is getting fixed and I am writing this on my iPad and it sucks. I just wanted to review some of the offensive woes and successes from last night. Though there are few. But I am going to do it individually. So here goes.
Kolb- plus- he did not have a great night passing the ball but he did show leadership and confidence in the pocket. If you watched the game, without dj,the wr were not getting open nor did kolb have much time to get rid of the ball. When he did have time however, he seemed calm, even when rolling out and getting out of the pocket. I was impressed with his throws on go routes, especially one that maclin decided to drop. More on him later. Minus- quite possibly we are going to have a dreadful year if he keeps his head focused on one side of the field. Three of those four sacks on him were his fault in my opinion. He tends to stare down one half of the field and not have the peripheral vision necessary to feel pressure or scan through his reads. Now I know this is preseason and the play calling is very fundamental, but I was bothered to see another week of his pre snap demeanor and reads. He needs to get better at reading the blitz and the overall defenses. This will come I am sure especially when game planning on a weekly basis. Just my thoughts. Maclin-plus- he seemed in control. He ran crisp comebacks, a few slants and really showed his ability to be a top receiver in this west coast offense. He had decent hands all game and got separation. Kolb threw to him much more with dj out. I believe this was a good game for him all in all and I am pleased with his maturity. He caught the ball, celebrated and walked back to the huddle. Minus- in this offense maclin is going to get his touches, especially on go routes opposite dj. With Jackson claiming a lot of double teams, maclin needs to come down with those perfect kolb over the shoulder passes. And don,t believe the commentaries during the game, the db barely touched it. Maclin did not look the ball into his hands and it hit his forearm. Ugly fundamentals. The good thing is it was really his only mistake, but it was a big one that could have kept them moving with confidence and drawing the d back on their heels. Celek - plus - his run and pass blocking were superb and he caught and easy pass. -minus- not really a threat or go to target for kolb last night. That bothered me. Herremans -plus- he looked great. He blocked well and looked decently quick on trap plays. He really ran well laterally. It was good to see. McCoy- plus - my biggest concern for him this year was his between tackle running and his effort when defenders were draped over him. He looked good. Hit the whole hard and made defenders miss. Minus - he got knocked off of a few routes last night, especially a screen that was WIDE open for a long scamper. He needs to get tougher. And that's all I can write on this stupid thing. Let's hope we can shore up these issues quickly.Acme Packing Company
