Eagles Sloppy, but Beat Chiefs 20-17 On Late Drive Led by Mike Kafka

"With JasonB, Bob_Q And Jimmy K Injured, Scott K. Writes Eagles-Chiefs Recap"

The first quarter showed what the Eagles defense could do with its collection of up-and-coming rookies and meshing veterans.  The defensive line quickly got after Matt Cassel and forced a fumble, which the Eagles were able to recover.  Brandon Graham was a force off the bat, putting pressure on the Chiefs offensive line that he continued throughout the first half (see a write up on him below in "Impressive").  That fumble helped the Eagles to convert their first successful red zone excursion; an 18 yard run by LeSean McCoy scored the Eagles first team offense's first touchdown of the preseason.

More after the jump:

Star-divide

Two drives later - following the fumble recovery, a fumble forced (by Akeem Jordan) but not recovered and a 3-and-out - the Eagles defense went to work once again.  Dominant play from Trent Cole and Graham put the Chiefs offense on its back foot.  Rookie cornerback Trevard Lindley took advantage of the defensive line's pressure and picked off a Cassel pass, leading the Eagles to another foray into the Chiefs' half of the field.  A series of unfortunate play calls later (seems like Marty wants a book series of his own), the Eagles handed it off to David Akers, who slotted home a 39 yard field goal.  A 10-0 lead looked like a good sign for things to come.  It was not.  The defense let up a touchdown the next drive.  Blown coverage by Asante Samuel led to Dwayne Bowe catching a Cassel pass just inside the endzone.

An Eagles response was heard in the form of two 3-and-outs.  Between the two drives, the Eagles managed only 6 yards (8 one drive and -2 the other).  Luckily the defense was able to force the Chiefs to punt in between the two drives.  Unluckily, the Eagles defense was not able to prevent Thomas Jones from making his way into the endzone, putting the Chiefs ahead 14-10.

Sloppy play ensued for the Eagles, as the offense line provided little to no blocking for Kolb, who seemed to find no calm behind the line of scrimmage.  Forced to scramble more than once, Kolb racked up 19 yards of rushing in the first half, showing off the mobility that has been talked about for weeks.  His stats were poor, to say the least, by the end of the first half, with less than 50 yards of passing.  Jason Peters began his reign of terror once again, managing to be called for a penalty in yet another game.  Jeremy Maclin needs to stop dropping the ball.  Kolb put a long throw right into his hands but Maclin could not reign it in.  He also proceeded to stretch for extra yards and put the ball out in the open for a fumble.  Maclin needs to learn to keep the ball protected.

The early second half was not pretty for Kolb, who found his pocket collapsing around him and made a Brett Farve lollipop throw up to Maclin.  Kolb's throw was easily picked off by Kendrick Lewis and was promptly returned for 26 yards.  However, Kolb's play picked up during a drive that began as the third quarter was winding down and continued into the fourth quarter.  His stats prior to the drive were 5/18 for 47 yards and 1 interception.  During the drive Kolb went 6/7 for 56 yards.  Michael Vick and Mike Bell contributed with 11 yards (two runs) and 4 yards (1 rush) respectively.  The long drive of 10 plays ended in another Akers field goal from 27 yards out.

Defensively, problems began to occur after Cole was forced to leave the game because of an ankle injury.  This injury came after DeSean Jackson (upper back) and Mike McGlynn were forced out of the game.  Without Cole the Eagles looked highly susceptible to the run.  Cole's ability to shut down the left side was clearly missing as the Chiefs targeted the left side of the field.  Chiefs runners racked up yardage and, as previously mentioned, made it into the endzone.  Graham was a bright light on defense, as was Nate Allen.  Both rookies played up to their billings as a first rounder and a second rounder, respectively.  Brodrick Bunkley and Mike Patterson both had quiet games.  Stewart Bradley had a game that further cemented his return to form (see a write up on him below under "Impressive").

Bobby April, when are your guys going to wake up? Sans Quintin Demps, where was your coverage and your punt returning?  It's time for you to completely overhaul the special teams, no matter how much you'd rather just streamline the current structure that is there.  Once again, Akers and Sav Rocca were the consistent parts of the bunch.

Noticeably quiet nights were had by the likes of Brent Celek, Macho Harris (is that a good thing?) and Ricky Sapp.  Celek really only appeared on a throw that was tipped in front of him, which is disturbing considering all the talk of him being Kolb's go-to-guy.

Finally, when was the last time you saw an Eagles team run a near perfect two minute drill?  Thank Mike Kafka for this one.  The kid has ice in his veins.  Riley Cooper showed some of what he can do with the block for Demps and the slick catch for the winning touchdown.

Impressive:

*Nate Allen: PEPSI's player of the game.  Showed his ability to affect the game through his speed on blitzes and by tracking down players in pursuit.  He was probably the most impressive player on the field besides Graham.

*LeSean McCoy: After a fumble recovered by the Eagles defense, he broke off a run inside the 20 that led to the first touchdown by the Eagles first team offense this season.  He showed his Westbrook-like smoothness as he bounced off of a defender and evaded others on his way to the endzone.  His next three carries, though, led to only eight yards.  A poorly executed Wildcat gave the Eagles basically nothing.  As a receiver, McCoy caught a pass while he was "wide open, I mean WIDE open" according to Don Tollefson, for eight yards.  His only other chance at a reception resulted in an incomplete pass, as a 3rd and long screen pass ended up over his head when a defensive linemen nearly dragged him to the ground.

*Trevard Lindley: The rookie had been close to an interception a couple of times this preseason but finally got his hands around the ball in the first quarter.  His pick led to a 37 yard field goal by David Akers and increased the Eagles' lead to 10 points.  He almost nearly picked off a ball with 7 seconds left in the game.

*Brandon Graham: On a majority of defensive plays anyone watching the Eagles Television Network feed could hear Graham's name being said, by former Eagles defensive end great, Hugh Douglas in praise.  Almost constant pressure was brought by the Eagles first round draft pick and it helped to lead to the fumble that led to McCoy's touchdown run.  In the early second quarter, Graham batted a pass down, eliciting more praise from Douglas.  On a long drive by the Chiefs offense very late into the second quarter, Graham's pressure found himself with even more of Douglas' compliments.

*Quintin Demps: Big man on campus now, it seems.  A huge return around the 2:50 mark in the second quarter put the Eagles offense on the 50 yard line.  Riley Cooper's excellent block allowed Demps to continue up the field where he broke a defender's ankles with a Madden-esque spin.

*Stewart Bradley: Stewie is up to form.  He was making plays or disrupting the flow of the offense.  It'll be nice to see him in a game that matters.  Quarterbacks and running backs beware:  Bradley is back.

*Kurt Coleman: The way he has played this preseason will put him in place to make the team as a backup safety.  He showed his grit and football intelligence.  If Harris makes the team it looks like it will be as a cornerback because Coleman has cemented himself and Demps showed his value tonight.

*Mike Kafka and Riley Cooper: Kid can run a two minute offense.  Nuf' said.  I am vindicated! Sunshine wasn't half bad when catching the winning touchdown pass.

Disappointing:

*Referees: A miss on two different defensive pass interference calls (when Maclin was thrown to in the endzone) and an incredibly blatant offensive pass interference call (when Samuel went for a pick but was pulled a couple of yards away from the ball by the wide receiver).  However, they sure do like calling "71" on the Eagles for penalties.

*Jason Peters: How many penalties is Peters going to pick up before finally getting to a truly Pro Bowl performance?  Enough is enough with the lackadaisical play.  He is more frustrating than Shawn Andrews or Bobbie Williams right now because he can play, wants to play and yet makes some of the stupidest decisions an NFL player can make.

*Ernie Sims: The shark finally showed himself to be a shark.  Clamping down on his man inside the five, Sims fought him off and proceeded to nearly pick off a poor pass by Cassel.  BUT his coverage after that play was more than lacking.  Still waiting for him to make a monster tackle, as well.

*Chad Hall: Hall displayed very weak punt returning skills.  It's an unfortunate event in Hall's short career but he just is not going to bring anything to the Eagles that necessitates him taking a roster spot.  Sorry Chad.

*Charles Scott: His dropped catch in open field, out of the back field, solidifies in my mind that Scott has no chance of making this team.

*Joselio Hanson: Demitri Patterson has played well enough this preseason to cut Hanson if Reid believes that Harris can play as the 5th cornerback.  Didn't even realize he was playing during the game.

*The special teams: Do we really have Bobby April as our ST coach?  At least Rocca is having a resurgence.

Jason and Jimmy were taken off on stretchers early into the game. A rookie was thrust into the spotlight and had to step up. (It’s getting late and that game really tired me out. Ignore me right now :P).

I’d hope they’d cut macho before hanson I’ve seen nothing out of macho this preseason and he’s slowly played worse since he started game 1 last year, I say keep lindley, Patterson and hanson cut macho and keep Coleman and demps at safety, demps is a decent returner and has size and speed to play safety just need to see him healthy.

considering how obvious he was the previous two games, maybe not realizing hanson was in tonight is good news… Lol

That would be true if Lindley didn’t step up, if Paterson didn’t make some plays and if Harris wasn’t also quiet.

Like I said after the bengals game jason

Celek was absent except for one play. So he now has 6 quarters with 4 catches. Not what we expected to say the least.

I’ve always thougt Celek was a little overrated. He’s good, but nowhere near as good as Witten or TEs at that level. He had a decent 2009, but I always got the feeling that he had a Pete Incavigilia-circa-1993 type season

He got significant playing time the entire game. His time with the first team defense versus the Chief’s first team offense resulted in an interception for Lindley. With 7 seconds left in the game he nearly picked another one off.

Could you please go on??

I’m a big Lindley fan since I’m a big Kentucky fan, why did he get so much time? Did he play physically? and just other tid bits…

I’m more curious as to why he got so much time with the ones while Hanson and Harris were dressed. And with Patterson still playing well.

Harris seemed to fluctuate between safety and corner. I think Andy is still trying to figure out whether or not he should move him solely to corner.

Hanson… I honestly don’t know what happened with him. Lindley must have really impressed Reid over the past week.

Patterson was good again but he’s fighting for the 4th/5th spot right now, not the 3rd. I can tell you that Lindley may be our nickel corner now.

Yeah well when were facing big WR's and physical WR's

it may be better to have Patterson or Lindley at RCB considering their bigger and a bit better at being physical…

I can really see Lindley being a starter by the end of the year, I was worried about the CB position until the 4th round last april lol.

I have been impressed with Patterson & Lindley as well but for right now they are not the nickel corners. Right now that is still Hanson’s job. I know people are down on him because of the first two pre-season games but playing inside & outside are two different things and Hanson is clearly better playing inside. Plus besides that bomb to T.O. I thought he did better then people give him credit for in that game.

by The Legend on Aug 28, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Um I'd like to say that last year and the year prior

when hanson came in as the “nickel CB” he played outside while Sheldon slid in alot… So techniquely he still sucks dick at playing on the outside…

But Reid always keeps some stragglers for shits and gigs.

There are a bunch of Eagles castoffs floating around the league though, usually a sign we’ve drafted better than we give ourselved credit for. Saw Matt Ware in the Cardinals game again the other night.

Good write up. The play of the regulars show promise in individual cases. As

a whole, I don’t see enough consistent line play from the offense (Mainly the line). Maclin dropped too many passes. He may be hurting a bit from last week. Kolb is more Brett Farve than he is Rodgers. He throws into coverage and is not used to the speed of NFL safeties. I like that he can make the throw off his back foot though. Most QB’s get into trouble doing that, but he seems to have that Favre throw too. Andy has to teach him to look that safety off to freeze him. Or we are going to see a lot more safety INTS. You all know I have been saying that about him before we traded Don. I think we have some growing pains. But I think we have the talent to be a good team in 2011. Did you see Green Bay? 59 points?? OMG! I suspect the bevy of good QB’s on the schedule will be undefeated against us as we learn by torch.

Last night’s game wasn’t that bad, but he still is tentative for some reason

Yeah

He was amazing at this in college, but for some reason hasn’t been able to carry it over to the pro level.

And on a side note… did Maclin appear to not have his head in the game last night on offense? He had a number of drops and appeared apathetic at times. Hopefully it was just a one-game thing.

May I add a disappointment?

Along with Jason Peter’s, I would like to add the Eagles other “penalty machine”, Moises Fokou, to the “Disappointment” pile. Is it really necessary in this game to blatantly trip in front of the entire officiating crew? He was an undisciplined rookie last year, but as a second-year pro, he should have learned something between last year and this year. Instead he’s running with the 2’s and 3’s and making the same lame-brained mistakes. I liked his energy last year, but his penalties continue to be costly.

Thanks for the detailed write-up, Scott K.

I agree with all but one

Sims was certainly not a disappointment. That one coverage was blown in the endzone by he and Asante, but other than that he looked great. The guy is just blowing up lead blockers and letting our other guys get in there. He was in one 5 tackles in the first half. I just don’t get where you are coming in with this. Was he outstanding? No. But he also was not a disappointment by any means. Please don’t put him in a category with Maclin, Peters, or the test of the O-Line on this one.

WTF!!! No Kolb Comments???

Last night was a preview of the future folks. Kolb running for his life and making bad throws; and this was against a sorry Chiefs team. McNabb’s ability to avoid and shake off pass rushers and still make throws is going to be sorely missed this year. Kolb is showing the old happy feet in the face of a passrush and making all kinds of stupid, off balanced throws. The Eagle’s O-line is the weak spot of this team and Kolb is going to have little if any time to sit back in the pocket and find receivers. He’ll be more Jay Cutler than Aaron Rodgers.

by enrique s on Aug 28, 2010 7:48 AM EDT reply actions

Umm...

Kolb does have the ability to escape pressure, I’m really not sure how else he can prove it to you, the guy has been under fire every time he has played in the past 2 years and he has done reasonably well. If anything he is saving the offensive line from looking worse.

And I’d just like to point out that Kolb learned from the king of happy feet himself, Donovan McNabb.

The early second half was not pretty for Kolb, who found his pocket collapsing around him and made a Brett Farve lollipop throw up to Maclin.

Also, the long drive he led put him back into “neutral” for me. He was otherwise unimpressive.

hard to say

he’s been relatively impressive this preseason as a whole.

He certainly did not look sharp last night, and he made some poor decisions.

With that said, I thought he scrambled and escaped pressure pretty well. He throws off of his back foot better than most QBs I’ve seen…

And the offensive line didn’t help matters. I don’t want to blame them, but once we get a center that can recognize a blitz and call a blocking scheme up front, we’ll look a heckuva lot better. We did a pretty good job giving Kolb time when the Chiefs only rushed four, but we had a terrible time picking up their blitz (and they blitzed a lot!)…that gets ironed out when you have a decent center.

Incomplete

McCoy played well? Cut Hanson over Harris? Sims had 5 tackles and saved a TD and didn’t play that poorly.

What about the poor games by Kolb, Celek, Maclin, Fokou, and anybody on the line including Justice?

by MG77 on Aug 28, 2010 8:08 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

How is McCoy anywhere but on the “Impress” list after he scored the first team’s first TD this preseason?

McCoy actually pretty good blocking in front of him on that 20-yard TD run. It was one of the few running plays the Eagles’ lineman did do a good job. Otherwise, he had 4 carries for 8 yds, didn’t break a tackle all night long, and was generally so-so on blitz pickup. One play does not make for impressive night overall.

Sims did struggle in coverage but he didn’t play an overall poor game. It was mixed where he showed some ability to make nice plays including chasing Charles down on that play to prevent a TD. Just struggled in coverage a few times as you noted. I would say he was mixed overall.

by MG77 on Aug 28, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

It is hard though to judge McCoy given how few touches he had. Hell 6 touches is tough to judge any starting RB effectiveness on.

by MG77 on Aug 28, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Again, if you score the only TD so far into the preseason for the first team, you pretty much automatically make it onto the impressive list.

Another is if a player does that every game, you hit 162 HRs in a season but only bat .250 with a .250 OBP and a .000 BA w/ RISP.

Considering this team has lacked any red zone offense and had failed to score a single touch down as a first team unit, anyone who is able to score for the first time should be impress. Unless that player then has an “epic fail” he is going to make the impressive list.

Like I said, your list, your criteria ...

… I personally would feel better if McCoy had 10 carries for 80 yards, with three runs longer than 10 yards and he just happened not to score, than if he had 5 carries for 28 yards with an 18-yard TD run.

But yes, getting the TD monkey off the first-team offense’s back is a good thing.

Then it slowly developed as the game went on but a majority of the Impress/Disappointed people had done their stuff by the end of the first half. I just feel that if someone impacts the outlook of a preseason then be should be on the Impressive list. We hadn’t scored in the red zone or as a first team unit so McCoy’s goal was vital.

I rewound that play a bunch of times
McCoy actually pretty good blocking in front of him on that 20-yard TD run. It was one of the few running plays the Eagles’ lineman did do a good job.

Herremans mauled his guy and moved him out toward the D-end, McGlynn and Andrews got a body on a body and Weaver ran up in the hole and mashed. McCoy didn’t really get touched.

Otherwise, my major takeaway from the first half is that offense might not be as good as I thought it would be, but the defense seems to be coming along quickly. I realize it was the Chiefs, but to have Graham and Allen and Sims and Bradley all looking like best-case scenarios for Week 1 is pretty comforting.

Cole and Jackson are the best players on both sides and the offensive and defensive units are going to struggle respectively if they are out.

Again, for a team that had a ton of draft picks this team’s depth us really limited in a couple of areas including OL, S, CB, RB, and possibly DT and OLB. Keep hearing how deep and talented this roster is and it just had been the case this preseason more often than not.

by MG77 on Aug 28, 2010 8:20 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Is it safe to say?

We have too many good players for our defense, and the D in general just needs a little fine tuning.

Our Offense STILL looks really suspect – OL looked better at times (with the exception of Peters – WTF is with this guy? He made a pro bowl?) but there was a couple of throw aways Kolb took that really were too close to a defender to be throw aways. He can be a playmaker but he’s got to learn not to force it (I’m thinking particularly of the red zone play where he broke out of the pocket with no one open, to the left and then grounded it inbounds in the end zone about a foot away from a defender). Kolb, if its not there, Favre it right out the back of the end zone.

to get Peters. And instead of crappy old false-start Peters, they would have had a much younger, up-and-coming elite LT, and for far less money.

he hasn't been too bad

other than some penalties…

and I’m not faulting him for the ‘illegal formation’ ones that the refs decided to clamp down on in one preseason game in the guy’s entire career.

"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)

by jalarsen1 on Aug 28, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t fault him for those either. They can easily be fixed in one practice.

But the false starts and the laziness at times is starting to get real old.

I trust that he’s going to get his stuff straight and be dependable for us this year. But I’ve officially dropped the thinking of “he’s Jason Peters, perennial Pro Bowler; he’ll get it right the next time.” I’m past that. He needs to get over the mental lapses and be consistent on every snap. I definitely haven’t given up on him, but he needs to “re-prove” himself to me. That’s all.

by Smitty2K3 on Aug 28, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, for those watching closely ...

… Peters is a run game mauler being forced to pass block 60 percent of the time. He’s never been the kind of tackle who gives up 0 sacks in a whole season, and clearly the false starts are part of his game as well.

But the potential to shut down — or even limit — a rusher like Ware is what makes him so highly respected among his peers.

Peters kinda is who he is … like Asante. To get all those INTs you get a couple missed kill-shots where he fails to wrap up. I think Peters is a similar deal, his good outweighs the bad.

Thoughts?

There is no line great enough for the season opener against Green Bay featuring Aaron Rodgers and Kevin Kolb.

If you are a betting man, put money on Green Bay to win by at least two touchdowns and win a nice chunk of change.

At least we have a top 10 (possibly top 5) pick in the 2011 draft to look forward, though!

Why the Peters hate?

Yeah Peters had another penalty last night but he still played better than Justice did. I really wonder if Justice can duplicate his performance from last season because he has looked very average so far in preseason. Peters may not be a ‘Pro-Bowler’ but he is still probably the best lineman the Eagles have.

If you really want to direct your venom at someone it should be Stacy Andrews who stole money last year and looks like he might do the same again this year. Problem is that the Eagles don’t have anyone at RG who can push him right now because Cole is still out and MJG has shown very little.

That boated sailed a while. He would have to have been signed this offseason, worked out in the OTAs, and come into camp with the veterans to hit the ground running.

Eagles only will sign a C at this point if they reach absolute desperation which they might be nearing depending upon the health of McGlynn/Cole and Jackson’s ability to actually start in Week 1 or 2.

McGlynn was named the backup to Nick Cole after Jackson’s week 16 injury. I think he’s been told since then that he would be playing center, not guard. Either way I’m disappointed in his play.

Cole has shown very littleat C and I wonder about his health status. Haven’t heard anything on it.

C is going to be the single biggest issue going into Week 1. It will either be McGlynn or Jackson starting and I would be surprised if Jackson is really able to start Week 1.

Reid has said that he wants to take it easy on him but Cole wants to get back out there. It will either be Cole or Jackson at C and if Jackson is back I have a feeling Cole will be the RG.

He was so-so but expected him to have some notable rust. This line desperately needs him to be healthy and effective. Probably their best overall lineman.

Agree - Herremans led the few good runs we had

Borderline hold on one, but there were at least 3 runs to the left side (including Shady’s TD) where Herremans simply pancaked the DT on his side. On the TD, this allowed Weaver to pummel the Mike and Shady was off to the races.

Line Calls vs Line Play

Aside from the very stupid penalties, I was less disappointed with the line play than most posts so far. Almost all the heavy pressure situations that Kolb faced were due to stunting linebackers coming untouched through the B-gap and C-gap. So I put those failures down to poor line calls that didn’t pick up the stunts, and/or poor TE/FB play to not get a decent angle on the guy coming untouched (Weaver had at least one very noticeable miss in this regard). Add to that a few plays where Kolb had a decent pocket but didn’t step up into it – instead ran around it and let the DE come after him outside – also not the o-line’s fault. So I for one hold out some optimism that this is fixable – we were doing the wrong things – not getting beat unable to succeed in trying to do the right things. Kolb had a terrible game all around – not calling audibles, not accurate, not seeing the pocket, not looking away safeties. I am very worried that he is putting so much pressure on himself that it is making him play worse than his ability. So we better hold some TE’s in protection for awhile until he gets his head on straight, even if that means a few more 3 and outs – sure beats the chaos we saw last night.

by PrincetonGreen on Aug 28, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed on the TE/RB blocking being poor. Nobody in the backup really did a good job of picking up the blitz last night and in Reid’s scheme that is pretty important.

You said this is the “same” offensive line. It is not. Look at the personnel. You’re missing your starting center and now Stacey Andrews is completely failing. Along with that “Pro Bowler” Jason Peters is playing like he doesn’t know what football is and Todd Herremans just returned from an injury. How is this line at all like any of McNabb’s? Right now this is the worst offensive line the Eagles have ever started under Reid.

The fact is, people who have soured on McNabb blame him in a biased way. Its clear…most of these folks have watched in enough football to know that no QB can perform well without a decent (doesn’t have to be great O-line). I think it is unfair to expect Kolb to perform better that what he has been with the level of play of the players around him. I know it’s preseason but this current offense sucks…. from the line to the receivers……When McNabb said this was a young team last year, everybody said it’s another example of how he throws people under the bus….. I felt it was an honest assessment of the team…. people that don’t like 5 don’t like him and always seems to hang unto everything he says….. This team is young and will show their youth this year…..All the so called experts, comparing Kolb to Aaron Rodgers will find out on opening day that they are putting too much expectations on the kid.

We don't have any big names on our line last season

So my adoration for a player comes from what I see, and while Herremans was acceptable, he was hardly great. We made due last season and still had success, I feel we can do so again, but it will come down to Kolb being able to feel the pocket around him, something I’m sure he’s working on but hasn’t mastered yet. Since Kolb is our starter, I want him to succeed, but just because he’s an Eagle, I’m not going to give him a glowing review, but his pocket presence is still a work in progress.

Kolb has the stuff to win with the Eagles. He has to do better throwing down the middle of the field. He is kind of like Farve, not Rodgers. We can win with him. Someone in the live thread

said Kafka would be the starter in 2012.

I fear he might be right, not because I don’t have faith in Kolb, but because the offensive line is likely to get him killed by then. In fact, Kafka might not be the starter, because he, like Kolb and Vick before him, could suffer the same fate.

by bigmeanie08 on Aug 28, 2010 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Kafka is a very smart player, short on physical talent. Joe Montana comes to mind.

My point is it could work. If Kolb fails, Kafka is the only true option at QB left. Vick could work with a strong running emphasis and a short play progression that allows him to improvise after 1 or 2 steps in the progression. But I think long term QB’s can kind of emerge as NFL solid when others were considered the heirs. I just think Kolb is not going to be given a long rope to prove he can take the Eagles to the playoffs if he plays bad. As a McNabb supporter, I don’t think this is fair to Kolb. He only has a 2 year extension. The writing is on the wall.

And McNabb did not have his safety blanket Westbrook.

In years past, McNabb would get in rhythm by the dump off or swing pass to Brian. Shady frustrated Donovan last year not being able to get into the correct place. Jackson’s performance over shadowed this glaring missing piece. But when the Cowboys took away the deep ball, there was no swing pass, dump off, misdirection game with Shady to replace Brian and you saw a very confused McNabb. When the Vikings took away Romo’s tight end safety net, Romo panicked and crumbled.

I have yet to see Kolb do ANYTHING that would lock him in as the "future" of this franchise.

What QB can establish himself as the future of a franchise in two regular season and a handful of preseason starts?

It’s way too early to be pronouncing anyone anything definitively. What those of us who like Kolb (and I also advocated for one more McNabb go-round) have noticed is some moxie, the ability to make all the throws, to decide quickly and to throw on the move. Also, when you hear people independent of the Eagles or our fans talk about his game, it’s generally positive.

But as my HS running backs coach used to say, potential means you ain’t done shit yet.

Give the kid some time before you decide. Even Lombardi and Broad agrees with me on that.

If you’re expecting him to play 4 excellent quarters for all 16 or 17 games, you’re setting yourself up to be disappointed in Kolb. And certain McNabb lovers definitely want him to fail. Me, I want the Eagles to succeed, but do you …

Played poor overall last night and there is really no debating. Still, it was just a preseason game and really 2 quarters. Hard to take away much of anything away from it. It is like proclaiming he was a bust after the half in the Baltimore game or the same people proclaiming as a future Pro-Bowler after the KC game last year.

My bet is that Kolb has an up and down year this year and probably has 3-4 games where he plays pretty poorly. It is going to happen especially to any new starting QB. Let’s see how he looks after 6-7 games before getting too wound up either way.

Same old Andy Reid offense

OK…the guy can put together decent teams. I mean the Eagle’s have the most wins for an NFC team over the past 10 years. That being said, Reid’s offenses always look the same to me. Never really establish the run game and rely on passing. This is all good when the offensive line can block. This year it can’t. So much has been written about Kolb and he talks a good game. I’ve yet to see him do much on the field. Same stupid
O-line penalties as usual. Hopefuly we don’t have another year of the “wildcat” with Vick, that was a disaster last year. I just never liked the way Marty or Andy call games offensively. Last night it was 3rd and 1 and they throw a 40 yard pass to Maclin which he dropped. Just run the ball with Bell..get the 1st down and then throw that ball. I’m tired of trick plays, poor red zone calls and penalties. You can switch the players year in and year out but the results are always the same. Must be the coaches. Eagles have some talent on both sides of the ball but between Andy, Marty and ST coach Bobby it could add up to a long season of groaning.

Andy Reid Needs to Retire

I am saying this with a caveat, If the eagles should have a loosing season this year. I will take a .500 team but no less. A coach’s primary strength is the ability to get the best out of his players. Using the issue with the O-line as an example, why isn’t Andy getting Peter’s best? When he signed him to that ultra-expensive deal, Jason Peters went to the Pro-bowl 3 consecutive years preceding the signing and now he plays average? Not to mention Andrews and the rest of them. It’s not enough to sign pro bowlers you have to inspire them to play, to buy into your program and Andy has failed in that regard.

This isn’t an attempt to bash AR, all the recent SB winners did two things, they filled the holes in their team (Giants getting their running game together and Saints getting Brees and others). The second thing they did was get those players to buy into the system and Andy has failed in one of those areas. It isn’t very obvious where, is he getting the wrong talent or has he failed in coaching the right talents? Either way, the Eagles will be better off getting rid of AR at the end of the season, “IF” we have a loosing season.

Do you mean goal???

Juan is the one that is directly over the line.

It’s not enough to sign pro bowlers you have to inspire them to play, to buy into your program and Andy has failed in that regard.

Do you have inside information into the locker room?? There is zero way for you to know this.

is he getting the wrong talent or has he failed in coaching the right talents?

You do realize that the Eagles have the most wins for an NFC team over the last decade right? Obviously he is doing something right.

Either way, the Eagles will be better off getting rid of AR at the end of the season, "IF" we have a loosing season.

Ok hypothetically lets say we let Reid go. Who do we hire to replace him? Do we fire Mornigwhig too? It will be Kolb’s second starting season and he will have another scheme to learn. We all saw how that affected Campbell down in DC, he switched OCs more then anybody.

The only reason why Tampa beat Oakland that year was because Oakland was still running Gruden’s packages. He never was able to repeat his success.

Gruden took one team to the Super Bowl and won. He won one conference championship game, in 2002 when the Bucs won the Super Bowl.

Andy currently has more years as a head coach and spent more years as an assistant/positional coach.

Andy was not coordinator. Gruden was the Eagles Coordinator in his early 30's.

Gruden has more leadership experience. Andy was only a QB coach when the Eagles tapped him as head coach. Coordinator/Head Coach Experience, Super Bowl appearances/victories and game day management go to Gruden. Talent evaluation is a toss up. Andy wins on consistently putting a winning team on the field but Gruden does it very well. ADVANTAGE GRUDEN if you want to win a Super Bowl.

Super Bowl appearances is a draw, Super Bowl wins goes to Gruden, conference championship appearances goes to Reid, CCwins is a draw, overall record goes to Reid, seasonal record averages goes to Reid, drafting record goes to Reid, not being fired goes to Reid, the ability to enjoy coaching after all this years goes to read.

You missed the part where I said “assistant/positional coach”. If you look at it, Reid has been in football management since 1982 and made his foray into the NFL in 1995. Gruden started in 1986 and made it into the NFL in 1990. If you put coordinator and head coaching together, then Gruden has 14 years, while Andy is currently in his 11th. That’s not much of a difference.

When did he take the Raiders to the Super Bowl? Let’s look at the facts:

The Raiders won ONE conference championship after 1983. When? 2002.
The Bucs won ONE conference championship ever. When? 2002.

It’s kind of hard to coach both teams in the same Super Bowl, no matter how little the Raiders changed after Gruden left the team the previous offseason.

Ok, bad wording. You won't debate me that the Raiders in the

Andy has not guided nor prepared 2 teams for the Super Bowl. AND Gruden had as much to do with the Ray Rhoads Eagles MAKING THE PLAYOFFS AS RAY DID. So Gruden has a track record of getting teams ready for post season play, I prefer over Andy’s. Andy’s teams get there. Jon’s teams go for the trophy.

If this team has a loosing season this year, then I honestly don’t see any drastic improvement in the horizon. If they barely make the playoffs then I can continue to by into what Andy’s doing.

Look at Shula, Parcels, Landry, Gibbs and Johnson and compare them to Gruden, then to Reid. They pretty much all went to multiple Super Bowls along with their wins or multiple conference championship games. They surely went to a lot of playoff games. The fact is that Reid is closer to them than Gruden. He shares more similarities with those coaches than Gruden does. He has the same kind of sustained success, same continuous movement into the playoffs and same multiple long playoff runs. The only thing he lacks, and the only thing Gruden has in common with those coaches, is that he won a Super Bowl. Nothing more.

I like the winner Andy is. But he is not a champion. Gruden is. So is Shanahan. I doubt Andy ever will win the big one. He does not have that champion quality that causes the team to collectively will itself, impose it’s will. The Eagles in 2004 had everything they needed except the will to win. That comes from the coach. And give me Donovan puking. He stood tall after that and threw a strike Greg Lewis for a TD. The defense lost the Super Bowl. Andy is not a champion. I do expect that this team at the end of the year shows that it can knock out teams trying to make the playoffs.

Fat chance. Didn’t do it with the Raiders, nor ever again with the Bucs. He was one and done as a SB winner.

Whatever.

Super Bowls

Jon – 1 for 1 and 1 for 1 to get to the dance.
Andy – 0 for 1 and 1-4 to get to the dance.

I’m a Six Sigma black belt. Statistical efficiency is with Gruden. You cannot debate. It was not luck because like Vermeil he prepared more than one team for a Super Bowl appearance.

You prove my point. Dilfer didn't lose it. He could

have screwed it up even if the defense was the offense and the defense! lol.

Ask Tampa fans if they would give up their Super Bowl ring for Andy’s “winners”. Checkmate!

No, but they'd give Dilfer for McNabb no questions asked

No your point is that the label Champion

makes you better than a proven winner. Trent Dilfer is a champion. I wouldnt trade Dilfer for McNabb.

Or how about this. there are always those guys on College basketball teams that dont play a single minute of the game but are still labeled as champions if your team wins. So fuck Lebron. I want that random white guy from Duke.

Im convinced your just trolling now thought
