Comparing the Projected 2010 Defensive Line to the 2001 Starters
I'm just a little concerned with the lack of beef on our defensive line. The starting defensive unit as a whole looked ok against the Bengals except they showed a tendency to get pushed around (Except Bunkley). They were exceptional flying around and delivering some typical Eagle shots we all REQUIRE from Eagle defenses. But we all know the control of the game starts up front. So I went back to the line from our last 10 years that I felt (Yes, this is subjective and not statistical.) exuded the kind of kick ass that we want to see from our young defensive line. So this poll is merely about what you remember about the 2001 line and its ability to dominate. Feel free to include stats if you feel it will help your position. My hope is that we can as observers show whether we are or are not confident that this defensive front can dominate as we have seen from what I thought was the toughest defensive line in the Andy Reid era.
In 2001 we had a prime Hollis Thomas who was stout against the run as was a young Cory Simon. But Cory Simon could also sack the QB and throw the runner for a loss. We miss this kind of game changing aggression from the DT position (Bunkley is definitely threatening and Pat ain't too bad.). We need to see it again. I know our tackles use a different scheme, but we need respect and dominance from the DT position. On the end, we had a prime Hugh Douglas who was at least equal that of Trent Cole if not stronger physically. Speed I give to Cole. Production about equal. But Douglas was NASTIER than Cole and just as relentless. Brandon Whiting if you remember played some DT. He wasn't the sacker that Jacqua Parker is. But he was never pushed around on that end. He was pretty strong and stout. He was also a good 3rd down DT. I'm not giving the rookie Parker's position yet. He may be the element though that makes this line better than the best line as far as toughness, in Andy's era in my opinion. So answer the poll, but also comment on the other defensive lines under Andy. If you feel there is another that exudes that tough, stout attitude? Let us know. If you feel the 2001 line was helped because of exceptional linebackers and safeties. Comment that too. But whatever, the point, we need to see the 2010 defensive line control the line of scrimmage. The line I thought that did it best was the 2001 line.

Things have changed a bit in 10 years
the league is definitely going smaller/faster, and we never saw it more on our own team than in these last two years (especially this offseason)
I’m not sure how I feel about that trimmed down, sleek look. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Reggie Whites (6’5", 300lbs) of the game who could OWN an OT…i mean straight up make that OT his bitch, whether on a bull rush, or a quick move.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Trent Cole, and he’s obviously effective (and with the Dumervil’s, and Freeney’s of the game, you can obviously make a case that size might not matter), but he certainly had a tough time getting around Flozell last year. Ernie Sims is a great addition on our new fast defense, but if he can’t shed a block, he’s going to have a tough time here.
It’s been a while since we’ve been able to pressure the QB with just our front four. I’m willing to give our ‘small and quick’ experiment a couple more years to let Graham develop…but if the duo of Graham and Cole aren’t getting it done…then I’m ready for a big guy again.

I'm on the same page with you there j1.
I'm on board with the Eagles rebuilding plan.
I don't expect a winning season.
I don't expect a playoff appearance.
I do expect to see the best players emerge and improve week by week.
I do expect that this team at the end of the year shows that it can knock out teams trying to make the playoffs.

Reggie White, the memories
To this day I’ve never seen a defensive lineman just utterly destroy whatever blocker (or blockers) was in front of him like #92.
Yeah, maybe that's the surge that is etched in my mind.
Reggie was faster than most DE’s and had the strength to command a double team at tackle.

Here are some statistics...
Graham: 6’1" 268 lbs
Patterson: 6’1" 300 lbs
Bunkley: 6’2" 306 lbs
Cole: 6’3" 270 lbs
Avg size: 6’1.75" 286 lbs
Hugh Douglas: 6’2" 281 lbs
Hollis Thomas: 6’0" 340 lbs
Corey Simon: 6’0" 320 lbs
Brandon Whiting: 6’3" 285 lbs
Avg size: 6’1.25" 307 lbs
So yes, the defensive line is much less stout. But the game is becoming less and less ground-based, and the need for speed increases while the need for size decreases. in 2001 almost every team employed a one-back system while today’s league is almost entirely built on two- or three- back systems. I think the line being less stout is more about blitzing rather than filling holes, and I think our size is fine. Certainly Bunk and patterson are faster than Thomas and Simon, and Cole and Graham are likely faster than Douglas and Whiting.

But how about the 2 big fellas in Minnesota? Stout seems to still be relevent.
Other than the Redskins, the other teams in the NFC East are all around the 310lb size, about the same as the Eagles at DT. So you are right with the trend. But I don’t think too many teams are going to run up the gut of the Vikings nor the Redskins. If Sugarcanesworth gets his butt moving, the skins will be real thick up the middle. I need to see this quick stuff work before I let go of my need to see big, fast defensive lines rather than small and quick.

BIGGER VS. FASTER
It would be nice if you could have the best of both worlds, but in todays game, you have to give up size for speed. It would be nice to have 5 Reggie Whites, but he only happens once every blue moon. It’s not going to happen, so you just have to pick your poison and hope it works.
Considering that Hugh was awful against the run, and Thomas and Simon were simply fat I am much more inclined to take the current DL over that one.

LOL! simply fat! Those two could get it up for certain plays, but I do remember
them getting tired.

They were good players, but they are bigger than Pat and Bunk because they are fatter. Not because they are stronger or stouter.

Corey Simon in his prime was a beast. He was stout and quick as hell. He was short-lived granted but for a couple of years he was a BEAST!
At one point, he was flirting with being one of the top DT's in the league.
It’s a shame he couldn’t seize it due to personal problems.
