Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Surprises so far?

Trevor Laws is my biggest surprise so far. This is a guy who lost time to a journeyman free agent Antonio Dixon. I hope he can actually play when the regular season starts too. (We should have two separate preseason awards one for offense (na brown award) and the justin babin award for defense.)

Sims - I think a lot of us thought he was going to come in here and be a huge upgrade over anyone else we had. Unfortunately I think the Lions fans were right. He plays very undisciplined football, over pursing and out of place. That can be deadly when we play teams with a lot of offensive fire power. Anyone want to wager that Jordan will have his starting job back?

Graham - OK did anyone really think he was going to be this far along in his development?

Hobbs/Patterson - I'm getting a little less nervous about our CB situation. We're pretty thin but it looks like we got some guys who can at least play the position at an adequate level.

Rocca - He's playing awesome and consistent! Nice!

Fokou - Someone must've spiked my Fokou kool aid. I thought he was going to make at least some progression from last year

Cooper - Maybe he will edge out Baskett as the 4th guy, but I still don't think he's going to beat out Avant or Maclin like some are believing.

MJG - I thought he was better than that. He's not

Stacy Andrews - I thought he was going to step it up, doesn't look like he's going to.

Who is officially off the Charles Scott and Cornelius Ingram band wagon? So much hype I don't think the two even have a shot to make the team. Scott is listed as FB, we know who the FB here is. How about Chad Hall and Michael Vick being anything more than a backup? Hall won't make this team, I'll be surprised if someone signs him off the PS,

and Michael Vick was NEVER a good passer, I've been saying it for the past 7 years now. I think he makes a great wild cat QB  and here's why.. It looks to me like all Vick has to do is make two decisions 1) Look for the safeties or line backers to bite and throw down field 2) if they didn't bite, take off. That's pretty easy, minimal check downs, and should make little room to have a turn over.

Oh and how poorly our S/T coverage has been. Definitely a big surprise.

RB Martell Mallett

Him and Buckley are seriously going all out for that 3rd RB spot. And here I thought Charles Scott would be our 3rd RB…

You know I figured Buckley would be in the mix

He can play S/T and OBVIOUSLY thats a big plus right now giving the state of our coverage teams. I bet that’s what it’s going to come down to

Ingram will make the team

There’s no way they kept him around this long just to prep him for another team.

by DLawrence55 on Aug 21, 2010 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

I really doubt we keep him

Unless its on the IR. I haven’t heard one good thing about him.

yea he is definitely a surprise, unless they are bringing him along slowly trying to take it easy on him. I doubt that’s the case because everyone has been silent about him. Still I doubt they cut him as a 3rd TE he’s still pretty good and Clay Harbor seems to be a legit backup for Celek.

My surprises

The lack of any major injuries from training camp.

Our starters not having a single TD through 3 quarters of play.

Special teams looking so Bad other than the kickers.

Foko going from starter to being on the roster bubble.

How good our starting secondary looks(other then Hanson getting burned a couple times and Allen getting trucked one time) and for that matter even the LBs in coverage, they have been right there on many coverages, they just need to make more plays.

I try not to get too hyped over rookies no matter what round they are picked in, but the fact that Scott got put on the Tony Hunt plan so early is some what surprising.

Is Fennuki not playing or something? I haven’t noticed him at all and we were all hyping him as out back up o-line savior….

Let's get it Birds.

I’m not entirely surprised by this, there are really vanilla plays being called. I’ll be a little surprised if it doesn’t change the next game.

It is preseason

The jury is still out on Ernie Sims and Stacy Andrews. I’ll wait till the regular season to judge how they are performing. Both are capable of much better than they have been showing. Let’s hope it clicks when the regular season starts.

by PhilsForever on Aug 21, 2010 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

The thing is

Sims DID do all of that in regular season and Andrews WAS pretty bad in regular season also

Sims was a 100+ tackler you don’t get those numbers being a bad LB.

That one Vikings fan was right about Austin Howard. He’s been surprisingly good except for that Carlos Dunlap sack.

by Route36 on Aug 21, 2010 1:52 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I never thought Laws was good.

Sims really did overpursue. You’re right on there. But I think he’ll get it together. He has a lot of physical talent. Brandon Graham is going to be very good, but I wish there were some more beef up front on the D-Line to absorb some of the pounding. I still don’t know if Graham can be an instant every-down guy.

Norma Jean Gillis and the remaining Andrews sister are really terrible. I’m talking possible worst in the NFL at their respective position terrible. I mentioned in another post how a large recycling bin would be a better guard than Stacy Andrews. I really wish Roseman would stop down to the home center and sign one.

I also agree with you about Ingram. He’s way overrated. The chickens have come home to roost for him this year in a big way.

Was anyone ever on the Charles Scott bandwagon?

LOL, I had MJG as one of my “breakout” players. I was way off on that one. Looks like he got worse after the weight loss. I think the O-line will be fine with Herremans back at LG, Jackson at C and putting Nick Cole back at RG if Andrews/MJG doesn’t get it together.

Breakout players?

The only thing about Norma Jean that’s going to “break out” is his lap band and stomach staple.

I was on the Scott bandwagon.

I thought he was a great get in the draft. There were definitely a bunch of others on that bandwagon too.

A few more

Clayton, Coleman, Owens, and Martell Mallet – expected them all to be camp bodies.
Tapp – expected to hear more from him.
Celek – hasn’t been used much as a receiving target.

Antonio Dixon was a rookie last year so he wasn’t a journeyman

by The Legend on Aug 21, 2010 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

I’m surprised with Kolb. I was really worried about him, not so much anymore. None of the interceptions I was worried about and I’m not gonna be too quick to judge on the red zone stuff. He gets an A from me. Not an A+ yet, but he has really surprised me with just how good he has been.

Lindley and especially Patterson have been excellent, and right now I’d like to see Samuel, Hobbs, Patterson, with Lindley spelling the first two and Macho backing up Patterson in the nickel. I’m done with Hanson at this point. For his salary he’s been awful. Trade him for a 5th-6th rounder to a team in desperate need of secondary help. Also extremely pleased with Coleman, Allen, and the LB Clayton.

I haven’t heard much from Chaney, Sapp, or Tapp in preseason games, and Boo has disappointed.

I'm hoping that

we Keep McGlynn at Center, then put Nick Cole at RG where he played most of last year then once herremans suits up he’ll play LG… That should do wonders for our OL..

Only 3 Lineman I dont see get blown up consistantly are Peters, McGlynn and Justice… Stacy and MJG get rocked 90% of the time.

I just can never figure out special teams in the preseason. There’s like 50 different guys rotating in and out. It’s hard to tell what the first, second, and third units are. There’s UDFAs and rookies everywhere. I don’t know how anyone can tell how good or bad they are.

OK...

But how come the other teams are so much better than us on ST? Is it only the Eagles that are putting UDFA’s and rookies out there?

by IggleGreen on Aug 22, 2010 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d figure that April already knows which veterans can paly ST, he’s just seeing which of the rookies can shine there too.

This is a good point … I have always expected our ST to struggle because of the coaches we’ve had. This year I’ve spent extra time watching them because I expected big things from Bobby April and I think that is why I’m disappointed. Right or wrong I expected a vast improvement.

Off the Ingram bandwagon...

…I have to admit that I am too. I agree with that completely. Do you think it is more about Harbor stepping up or Ingram falling down?

I disagree with the Sims evaluation though. His strong point is going to be displayed in our blitz schemes, of which we haven’t done much because we traditionally don’t show them in the preseason. I think you will see a great performance from him this season as he becomes someone the opposition has to account for in the blitz game. I can imagine Trent and Brandon getting pressure around the end, Bunk and Patt taking up defenders in the middle, while Sims comes darting up the middle untouched.

by Qwest on Aug 22, 2010 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

I thought Scott was going to be the 3rd RB

He was really good at LSU. He seemed faster than Beenie Wells and was just as tough.

I guess I will never stop hoping for a Duce Staley replacement. Big and shifty, I guess it will not happen again this year. Anyone miss Buck? I do.

by topcat6 on Aug 22, 2010 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

Buck and Staley could put pressure on a defense. Shady is showing signs he can be

kind of like a Ricky Watters type between the tackles type guy since he put a little weight on. I would slam Buckley’s face into the line a couple times a game too. He’s tough and willing. Not sure what Bell has left.

I'm on board with the Eagles rebuilding plan.
I don't expect a winning season.
I don't expect a playoff appearance.
I do expect to see the best players emerge and improve week by week.
I do expect that this team at the end of the year shows that it can knock out teams trying to make the playoffs.

Pretty fair assessment Joe! Kolb is better than I thought. But I still don't see

Aaron Rodgers. I see more Brett Farvre in Kolb. This guy throws effectively off his back foot. Farve is the only one I saw do that consistently. And Kolb was doing it running for his life! Get Stacy Andrews out of there!
